Just adding to what CSound has said.
Pages and Numbers will change Word and Excel documents when they open and close them.
Sometimes the change is subtle and sometimes not. With the latest versions of Pages and Numbers, more likely not.
So don't think you are going to work with MsOffice files without problems. You will always have something not right and in some cases really annoyingly not right. Like having all the text from Pages appear bold in MsWord, or page breaks in the wrong place or some objects and graphics not appearing in one or the other.
If working between different Operating Systems and MsOffice files, I also recommend LibreOffice. It opens and saves nearly all file formats. Unfortunately not .pages or numbers. Yet. The folks at LibreOffice are busy adding to it all the time, and making sure it works in all Operating systems, Mac, Windows and Linux and they are promising iOS as well soon.

  • Microsoft Office 2008 document fail to open

    Hi guys,
Sorry if I posted on the wrong board, but I couldn't find a board for Microsoft Office. Anyway, I was working on a notebook document, using Office 2008, and Office suddenly shut down with an error message. Unfortunately this hasn't been the first time that it has been shut down. However, this time it won't allow me to open that particular document anymore. I've tried opening other documents in the same notebook format and those opened fine. I have no idea what's going on, only that I need those notes, lol. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    WendyCunn

I just spent 90 minutes on the phone with an excellent Microsoft/Mac Tech Support person, to deal with a similar problem. I have been using Microsoft Office 2008 for several months, and it has been working just fine. This morning, I was working on invoices, and I could open the invoice files, but not the (separate, unlinked) summary files that listed all invoices to date. I could open them in Excel 2004, but not in Excel 2008.
We ran through a number of diagnostics. I reinstalled MS Office 2008, and I could open the files. Then I downloaded the latest update from the Mactopia website and installed it, and the files would no longer open.
It turns out that there's a change in the file-naming rules in Excel 2008. Where we were once able to use symbols (asterisks and backslashes), they are no longer recognized. Since my files were originally saved as a copy of an earlier file with an asterisk in the file name, that original file's *sheet name* still appeared (at the bottom of the document), and 2008 would not open the file.
The fix -- Open in Excel 2004, right-click (or control+click) on the sheet name and select "rename." Modify so there are no symbols other than underscore and hyphen, and save. You should be able to open the document in Excel 2008.

I am no longer able to double click on a file and have it open.  Any suggestions on how to resolve this problem?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Microsoft office 2008 and OS X 10.8.3

microsoft office 2008 worked on my i-mac until I upgraded to lion 10.8.3. any easy fix?

Without any details on the problem, it's largely impossible to offer any useful advice. If you can post back with more information, someone may be abel to offer suggestions, but since this question is about a Microsoft product, you might have more luck getting suggestions if you ask in Microsoft's own forums.
    Regards.

  • I need to run Microsoft Office 2010 and can't figure out what I need to do...

Im taking a office applications class and we're required to use Microsoft Office 2010. I have Windows for mac 2011 on my computer but that's not good enough. Can someone tell me what I need to do to get Office 2010 running on my iMac desktop. I'm really not very computer savvy when it comes to this stuff...

To run Microsoft Office 2010 on your iMac you will need to install Windows.  You can do this one of two ways.
Use BootCamp (free program on your iMac) to make a windows partition and then install Microsoft Windows (XP, Vista, or 7) then you will need to restart your computer with the windows partition then you will need to install Microsoft Office.
You can buy Parallels Desktop 7 ($79.95) or VMware Fusion 4 (49.95) these programs make what is called a virtual machine on your iMac it's like any other program, but is is designed to run Windows and other OS along side of your Mac OS no need to restart your iMac, the main advantage.  Once you install Windows then you can install Microsoft Office 2010.
Note: Both of these methods will require a full version of Microsoft Windows.

  • Ever since the last Microsoft Office update, I can't open some files

A couple days ago, I downloaded an update that said it modified some Microsoft Office code, and ever since that time I get errors when opening some Word and Excel files.  Interestingly, when "the application quite unexpectedly" message appears and I try to report it to Apple, it then tells me that the reporting process quit (this makes me very nervous)!
How do I get my old Office reliability back?

Sounds like you need to contact Microsoft Office for Mac technical support.  If it was their Office update, they'd be better able to help you.

  • I recently did an apps update and now the update is locked and I have 15 apps I can't open. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

I recently did an apps update and now the update is locked and I have 15 apps I can't open.  Any ideas on what may have caused this and to fix it?

If Ralph's suggestion doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

  • Problems with Microsoft Office 2008 and 2011

    Hiya,
I am running Mountain Lion on my Macbook Pro and I'm having ongoing problems with the Office system. I'm doing a PhD so I use footnotes all the time and in Word 2011, the autosave function makes the footnotes disappear from the bottom of the page, but I'm not comfortbale working wihtout autosave running. I deleted Office 2011 and put Office 2008 back on my machine. However, since I re-installed Office 2008, the whole OSX seems to have slowed down.
Could Office 2008 cause my whole system to get sluggish? Is there anything that I can do about it?
I am also wondering if there is there another solution to my original Office 2011 problem with footnotes that doesn;t involve disabling autosave? Has anyone else has similar problems with footnotes? I just wiped my whole system and re-installed all the programmes, so I am surprised to still be having these same problems with Office!
Thank you for any help and advice!

  • Microsoft Office 2008 and repairs

My sister lent me her copy of Office 08 to load, it worked fine for a few months, now no apps opens accept Word. I did a disk utility repair permissions. No difference, and then I discovered the disk utility was damaged and wouldn't open, so I re installed it from my Tiger disc, the D.U opened fine. But I am really puzzled as to why something used work fine and I now does not work. There is no message to say what the error is, it just attempts to open, the colour wheel wizzes and it just says in the finder 'not repsonding' in red. To which I have to force quit.
My sister has lost the original Office disc, her daughter got hold of it and lost it, and so we are using copies we made as back ups or off our external drives. My other niece had a copy and her Tiger macbook is still fine with Office 08. (but she had to have a new hard drive 7 months ago after a big crash after 9 months).
Any ideas why this might have happened? I don't want to risk reinstalling my Tiger disc. Maybe I should take it to Cancom where I bought it?

    Hi Vanessa,
Sounds like Disk Corruption, in which case you don't want to do anything with it, not even Repair Permissions until you fix it.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

  • Pdf files open in microsoft office pictures and will not open

when trying to open a pdf file of pictures or an emailed document it goesinto microsoft office pictures...a blank screen appears with a small square in the center with the office picture logo and nothing opens

If you are on Windows, the easiest would be to run a repair install on Adobe Reader:
    *Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs
*select Adobe Reader, then click on 'Change'
*click '>Next', select 'Repair', click '>Next'
This should repair your PDF file association.
