It's good to read Antoniad's post.  It reassures me that I can use my new iPad as an international communication device which is the reason I purchased the thing.  However, I called Verizon today (my provider of cellular data) who told me that I can't just pop in a SIM card as you suggested.  He also said that he was from the "Pre-Pay" division of Verizon and he was certain that I couldn't do what I planned to do.  I was extremely disappointed as I had called Apple prior to buying the iPad and I read the algorhythm on the website for choosing an iPad before purchasing.  Those sources were quite specific and the information seemed clear.  I would be able to use my iPad to communicate through cellular connections while traveling on the road, literally, abroad.  I was told that I could pop in a data card wherever I was, just as you indicated in your message above, and voila I was good to go.  The Verizon rep definitively rained on that parade, but said that I might be able to do this if I have a "Post-Pay" account, a different area of Verizon.  I haven't had the chance to talk to this division yet, so I looked to Apple's Support for answers.  Maybe I will find out that I can use my iPad as an international communication device while traveling on the road afterall, however, it appears I may need a different type of account (Post-Pay), something I was never warned about. Can I switch to this kind of account?  I don't know.  I have to find out.  If you have any information about this issue, it would be good to share since I strongly suspect there are others who bought the iPad for the same purpose that I have.

  • Panther 10.3.9 to Tiger 10.4.7 bought from ebay

I just took delivery of two 'grey' Apple DVD Tiger 10.4.7 disks (disk 1 and disk 2) bought from a London dealer on Ebay to upgrade our emac 1 GHz PowerPC G4, 512 MB SDRAM. In the 'about this mac' under Hardware ATA it says: Pioneer DVD - RW DVR - 106D.
When install disk 1 is inserted it displays the 'install disk' folder containing the black round 'Install Mac OS X and bundled software' icon along with other language and 'read me' PDFs.
Double clicking on the actual installer brings up a a page worth of what looks like DOS codes on top of another more familiar Mac dialogue box in the background which can't be read really. And there it hangs. We have to eject the disk by holding down the mouse whilst restarting the emac.
On the sellers ad it said this version of Tiger was for DVD emac amongst loads of other models.
Don't understand what I have got really. But not a straightforward upgrade and probably not going to work either by the look of it. No instruction paperwork came with the purchase which I did expect it to. Can't get hold of the seller - even though they had hundreds of positive feedbacks.
    Any ideas? Many thanks
    JFW

    Hi Ian
Thanks for your response. That was the very first item I have bought on Ebay and I was jittery about it too. And look what's happened! My worst fears confirmed.
Apparently Tiger upgrade disks are hard to come by - that will explain the very high prices on Ebay for them. These disks didn't cost the earth, but I don't like to get 'done' if you know what I mean. I just want what was advertised (it said emac DVD 2005 suitable amongst other models). I have contacted Ebay resolutions as the seller (a dealer in South East London) can't be got hold of any which way I have tried. They say they give refunds - but that is to be found out! Either way I have lost the recorded postage.
    Anyway, thanks again....... Jacqueline

  • TS1702 I bought on Ebay Iphone Unlocked AT&T, but I need to work for Simple moble. I made mistake to purchased. What are my options.

I need to know how to make my iphone 3gs at&t to use for simplemobile. I bought on ebay unlocked but does not say GSM. My carrier told it should be GSM.
How I need to do. It has version 5.1
    Thanks,

You already asked this question 30 minutes ago and someone answered your question. You think the answer is going to change? If the phone was an AT&T device, then it is GSM. If the phone truely was unlocked, then you should be able to jusst put the SIM in the phone and activate it. In the other post you stated you have updated to iOS 6.x. If you are unable to activate the phone with a Simplemobile SIM, then it isn't unlocked.

  • I do not have the apple id for the macbook pro which i bought off ebay

I bought a macbook pro model A1278 off of ebay.  I got the dreaded flashing folder with question mark.  After trying to repair the disk after booting using command r.  I then tried to make a new startup disc with and external hd.  I got to the point where I have to enter a apple id associated with the operating system I purchased.  I used my own which of course is not the one of the original owner.  Is there a way around this?

The first thing to do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You—not the original owner—must do that. Changes made by Apple over the years have made this seemingly straightforward task very complex.
How you go about it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
It's unsafe, and may be unlawful, to use a computer with software installed by a previous owner.
    1. If you don't own another Mac
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller—not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine is very old and has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for a MacBook Air. You should have received those media from the original owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To start up from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then restart the computer and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should start up in Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Some models shipped with OS X 10.6 and received a firmware update after 10.7 was released, enabling them to use Internet Recovery. If you have one of those models, you may not be able to reinstall 10.6 even from the original discs, and Internet Recovery may not work either without the original owner's Apple ID. In that case, contact Apple Support, or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to have the OS installed.
    2. If you do own another Mac
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to prepare a USB device, then start up the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can start from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
    3. Partition and install OS X
    a. If you see a lock screen when trying to start up from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
    b. Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive—not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the  Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
    c. An unusual problem may arise if all the following conditions apply:
OS X 10.7 or later was installed by the previous owner
The startup volume was encrypted with FileVault
You're booted in Recovery mode (that is, not from a 10.6 installation disc)
In that case, you won't be able to unlock the volume or partition the drive without the FileVault password. Ask for guidance or see this discussion.
    d. After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. If you're installing a version of OS X acquired from the App Store, you will need the Apple ID and password that you used. When the installation is done, the system will automatically restart into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
    e. Run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the original owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed—you have to repurchase them.
    4. Other issues
    a. If the original owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're irrevocably linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
    b. If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
    c. When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a lifetime limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an iCloud account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information. The setup limit doesn't apply to Apple ID accounts used for other services, such as the iTunes and Mac App Stores, or iMessage. You can create as many of those accounts as you like.

  • Portege M200 - bought on Ebay and frustation comes

    Hello
I´m new here and I kindly ask for a warm welcome. I bought an M200 on Ebay and received it two days before. The M200 hasn t got a DVD drive and I dont have any Recovery CD or software for my Toshiba. I have a Toshiba slimline external PCMIA CD rom drive, but more of it later.
I found a lot of informations based on that topic but really nothing worked for me, that s why I ask my questions here. So far I will tell you what I have tried...
I have bought VISTA Home Premium and want it to install on my M200.
    On my M200 FreeDOS runs.
    I ve tried:
    1. Use my USB stick as a floppy disk by using an HP Tool which simulates a USB Stick as a floppy disk ( FDD ). I ve copied the whole content of the Vista DVD to my USB Stick. Then I ran BIOS on M200, select FDD as first boot option, but nothing happens, it still boots FreeDOS.
What am I doing wrong, does USB ( Floppy )Boot work on M200?
    2. Since there was an external Toshiba CD Drive included in my M200, I thought of first installing a Windows XP disk. In first times the drive seemed not to work, but after a few time it worked and I putted my Windows XP on it. It loaded the disk and the typical blue screen for start of installation came. But after a few seconds it stopped and said " couldnt read data xxxxxx.xx, Error 7. I tried it two more times and same error appeared, only that it was sometimes other file that couldnt be read and other Error number.
I ve read and I dont know if that is right:
I red somewhere that I can install only Windows XP that was used on recovery CD of Toshiba ( That CD wasnt included in my M200 ). So can I only use for OS install the recovery CD and no other normal XP CDs?
Or is there an error with my CD external drive? At this moment, it doesn t work again.....
    3.
I red the following link for installing Vista on M200 by an PXE Server:
    http://flimflan.com/blog/InstallingVistaOnYourToshibaM200.aspx
    and this one
    http://home.allegiance.tv/~joem298/
The first link says that I can start from point 13 from the second link:
Buut, and this is what annoys me. They tell me. Turn your Toshiba M200 on and press F2 to select the network. I press F2 but nothing happens, I can see the Toshiba logo but nothing happens..... If I press enter then I come again to FreeDOS....
Also on the second link, I tried to start from point 1. But at point 5 the say:
Unzip the contents of 'BFD full package v1.0.7.zip' into a temporary directory. Open a command prompt and browse to that temporary folder. Run the command 'bfd msnet' in order to create the bootable floppy.
I dont have a floppy drive. They tell me to run bfd.msnet from the command. By command is cmd.exe meant? If yes, what do I have to type in to get bfd.msnet run?
I knew that installation would be very difficult and I kindly ask for personal help. If you can speak german it would be great to answer in german.
    So far

The help you need is here:
    http://blog.ryantadams.com/2008/02/01/how-to-boot-from-the-network-pxe-boot-with-tftp-and-windows-pe/
You need another machine with a DVD drive that is running the network remote boot code for something called PXE and then you can load something called Windows PE - (preinstallation environment).
This is like a basic Windows system then you can then run the Vista setup program.
(We used to use a DOS disc but that usually didn't have networking or DVD drivers included. Windows PE replaces this and is more comprehensive).
It takes while for Windows PE to load - ie several minutes but it does eventually and then you can connect to the second machines DVD drive that contains the VISTA disk.
The link above tells you how to do all this and provides the PXE programs and the Win PE programs.
I know it works because I have used it myself just last week to install Windows 7 beta on my M200. (But this needs old XP drivers to get the screen and wireless working).
Don't try and load XP onto an M200 because you won't get the tablet screen functions working. You need either XP Tablet, Vista or Windows 7 which all have Tablet functions built in.
    Good luck.

  • Trying to install iwork '09 from dvd on new imac with no dvd drive.....iwork is brand new (bought off ebay) in unopened box....I have at my disposal an older imac with dvd drive and a 16GB thumb drive...what is best way to load iwork on the new imac?

bought my mom a new imac this xmas...didn't realize it has no dvd drive....just picked up a new unopened version of iwork '09 for her to use off of ebay....need to get it loaded on the new dvddriveless imac......I have an imac at my house with a drive and a thumb drive i could bring over to her house if I could somehow burn an image of the iwork dvd on the thumb drive...is this possible?  is there a better solution other than buying an external dvd drive?

First use Disk Utilty to make a disk image of the iWork disc on your iMac. Then there are two easy ways to install on your mothers new iMac. One is to copy to your USB thumb drive, visit your mother and install from the thumb drive. The other is to use a free upload and download service like www.wetransfer.com. Upload the .dmg disk image via www.wetransfer.com, then your mother downloads and installs. After installation you'll need to update iWork for Mountain Lion compatibility.

  • Can't register my macbook that I bought off ebay

I bought a Macbook Pro from someone off ebay. I have their receipt from when they purchased it, and I wanted to get applecare for it. But when I try to register the Macbook under my Apple ID, I never get a confirmation email, and it does not show up as one of my products. Is there something I am missing? I'm not even getting amessage or email stating that I cannot register it, or that the registration failed. Does anyone have any insight on this type of situation? Thank you in advance.
    Erik

The purchase date is April 13, 2011 so I beleive it should be fine. It is a refurb though from mid 2010. I think the one year starts from the purchase of the refurb, so that should still be within a year. My conern with registering it is that when I go to purchase apple care, I don't want to run into any problems if I need to use it in a year or so. I know there is a transfer policy with applecare, but I'm not sure if I need to do the same thing within the first year of purchase.

  • How  can i get a iphone  5s 16 gb unlock that i bought off ebay

how to get a preowen iphone  5s 16 gb gold unlocked that i bought off ebay

If the iPhone is locked to a wireless provider, only that wireless provider can unlock it.
If the iPhone is Activation Locked, only the person whose AppleID and passcode were
originally used can remove the Activation Lock.
Unless the iPhone was advertised as locked, start a claim with eBay to get a refund.
If the iPhone was advertised as locked to a wireless provider, you need to contact
that wireless provider to see if they offer unlocking and if you qualify - most require
you to be a current or past customer in good standing.
If the iPhone was advertised as Activation Locked, you wasted your money - there is
    no workaround for Activation Lock.

I bought a new ipod through ebay a month or so ago only to find it faulty - jamming constantly, screen sticking, skipping through songs - so I contacted the seller. He told me I needed to contact Apple, although on this forum it looks like you are meant to go back to your seller. As he has washed his hands of this what am I to do?
    Cheers, M

I have taken the ipod back to Apple, who were impressed with just how broken the thing was! Apparently the ebay seller would have been acutely aware of it being faulty. The hard drive was non-existent. So..... ebay buyers beware! Some things are too good to be true. Thankfully Apple are replacing it within the week, so it's not all bad news. Cheers!
