You can't reset it.  You will have to get the password from the previous owner or have them erase it and remove it from their account as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4515.  Otherwise you will not be able to use it.

    If you are trying to activate an iPad or iPhone and it is asking for a previous owners Apple ID and password, you have encountered the Activation Lock. This is a security feature that prevents thieves from setting up and using a stolen or lost iPad or iPhone. You have no alternative. You must contact the previous owner to get permission to use the device. If you cannot contact the previous owner return the device to where you bought it and get a refund. You will never be able to activate the device and no one can help you do it.

    I know the screen works because when it first turned on I saw the apple logo and then the screen.  If I hold the home and power button, I see the apple logo when it resets.  Then it goes blank again.
    I can hear when I get a call and pick up, and I can stop the sound and/or decline the call with the power button and side buttons.  It also still vibrates.  I'm confused - if the screen works, the buttons work, it vibrates, makes sound, and the touchscreen feature also works...  what is wrong for me to fix?  Why can't I see anything?!

    I apologize for the confusion.  This was literally the only option on Apple's "Contact Us" section that I was able to access.  I assumed that Apple's clear intent to have me go here instead of speaking with someone in live time, and the fact this is on the Apple website, meant I could get some advice...  Both over the phone and online they require information I need to see my screen to provide so those are not options.  I tried to bypass this when calling through Skype.  Some lady who didn't know what was going on, who I waited a good while to speak with, put me on hold; I gave up after 30minutes of waiting to speak to somebody again.
    I've stumbled upon a few tricks to help me get through this problem, but I'm at a loss.  I need this phone to work until late December.  I need more tricks.  So yes, it's worth understanding.  Knowing what is going on will let me Google it and work with it, if nobody here is willing to help...
    And yes, it IS a glitchy phone.  It has been a glitchy phone for a long time.  Long before this. But completely unrelated issues.  I was assuming this wasn't just a glitch but something maybe somebody could help me understand.

    Do you have the latest version of iTunes installed on your computer as you will need it? It can be downloaded from the Apple site via the iTunes menu at the top of the screen.

    I meant that I sign out, sign back in ok. Ergo, I know my password. Someone here on the support page  (you?) told me the culprit is the 2 step verification process which I had on. That makes a lot of sense as Apple mail won't get a code thereby jamming up the process. I could not even start a new account until I took that 2 step process off. Everything fine now thank you.

    Your 1st gen iPod Touch will not run iOS 4. It can only run iOS 3.1.3. This means that some apps will not run on your iPod Touch.

  • TS1702 I seem to have switched on 'Restrictions' on both my iPhone and my iPad, but I can't remember the code to switch off again.  Possibly as a result of this (although I'm not at all sure) iCloud, Faceltime, Twitter and Facebook cannot be accessed.

    A separate issue is that the Apple calendar on my iPad has stopped working. It opens but then shuts itself down after about 1 or 2 seconds. I tried to reset everything, but I come up against the same requirement for a code that I can't remember.

    Thats a seperate issue. Try closing the cal. app completely from the muti-task bar. Tap the home button twice until all the open apps appear. Hold an app untill they all start to jiggle, then you close the cal app with the red circle. Press home button again to go back to home screen.
    You can also try removing any re-ocurring evernts or all day event from march 30 and april 1, see if that helps.

    Reboot device by pressing both the home button and sleep/wake (power) buttons at the same time for 10-15 seconds until the apple logo appears on the screen, then let go.
    If that doesn't work then reset the device by going to settings/general/reset/reset all settings  (or for network connection issues 'reset network settings').
    (no media or data will be deleted from the device, this will only take a minute).

    As stated Restore is your only choice. You can Reset or Hard Reset the iPhone, reboot your computer and Restore again.
    If it does not get revived, there is a good chance that the iPhone was not only jailbroken but was bad as well when you bought it.
