Sometimes the genius at the Genius at the Genius Bar of an Apple store with do that. However, almost always Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for this price since a broken screen is not covered by the warranty.

My son who is 14; has a terrrible bully who broke the entire screen on his Ipod. It now has tons of cracks. He has it password protected and because of the cracks it does not allow us to enter the numbers or even slide the bottom bar "slide to unlock".. OK its a 4th gen ipod touch.
I've got it about one year (11 months around)
And yesterday night i dropped it and the screen is extremely cracked.
The crack starts at the home button leading all the way to the camera (there are 4 cracks)
The touch screen is really unresponsive and it goes to places that i dont want.
I dont have warrenty.
Would the apple store repair it and how much would it cost?
P.S. I've read online that some people had the same problem and no warrenty and The Apple Store replaced it for free. (not sure if it was the screen or the ipod itself).

Yes, sometimes they were willing to swap out the iPod for free, but don't get your hopes up. They are under no obligation to do so, but it doesn't hurt to at least try.
There are also several third party repair centers who can replace the screen for a lot less. A simple Google search for iPod screen repair should give you a number of results to work with.

Well...you've got a couple of options. A cracked screen isn't covered by the warranty on the device, but Apple may be able to repair at the Out of Warranty cost. Price will vary depending on which device you have:
8GB - $99+tax
32GB - $149+tax
64GB - $199+tax.
Option two is to take it to a third party who may be able to replace the screen for you at a cheaper price, but be warned, if you do this, it voids any warranty you would have had with Apple and if the hardware fails, they won't fix it period.

IPod screen goes blank!

After my iPod got wet, I let it dry for a week, tried most of the five R's (the ones that would be appropriate for an iPod with a screen that wont turn on) and plugged it in to my iHome. It turned on, but (not-yay) after I unplugged it the screen went blank. I mean, I was pushed into the pool! Shouldn't that be covered in the warranty? People have dropped things like a cell phone into water and got a new one back free of charge. I would try sending mine in, but if I have to pay the idiotic diagnostic fee of $100 even if I dont get it fixed forget it!

Also, try letting it charge.
Finally, why should Apple have to pay if your friend broke your iPod by pushing you into the pool? Make him pay for a new iPod.

iOS8 broke my Ipod Touch Generation 5. I finished the whole update part, but when I try to finish setting up my iCloud with my Apple ID and Password, it sends me all the way back to the Hello screen. Can anyone help me with this? I've tried logging in to my iCloud at least 100 times with the same result. Yes I'm putting my password in correctly. I've even turned it off and on again. Nothing is working.

Try:
- Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost

- Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.

- Restore to factory settings/new iPod.

Since the screen doesn't work, it will be challenging to get it working, even thru iTunes. You will need to ask yourself if you want to invest more money in it or get a new one, especially since the contents will be lost since you don't know the passcode. Apple will gladly replace the screen for a cost that represents a significant portion of the price of a new. Once the screen is done, you may or may not be eligible for the free iPhone 5 Battery Replacement Program.
Or, if you decide to salvage it and are strong of heart and firm of hand, you can replace the screen yourself for less. See here and note they carry kits with all needed tools and parts.
