I brought OSX to its knees.

With the CanonScan LIDE 500F. See computer details below. I was running iTunes, iChat, Mail, Word 2004, Entourage 2004, Safari, VPN on my corporate network, OS9 running with TCP/Access for AS400 file transfer download and at the same time I had Mocha X running another TN5250 session connected on the net via Airport Base Station.
I decided to scan an image. Simple one, black and white. Open up PhotoShop CS, saved the file and all seems well, then all of a sudden the entire system was running slower than a slug on his best day. I didn't force the Mac to shut down, kept selecting each app to quit it and it took 10 minutes at a time to even switch to the running application to be able to quit it. iTunes kept playing on though. Eventually I was able to quit all and restart the computer. It didn't crash, but it sure brought OSX to its knees.

Also this thing called "CNQL2410_ButtonManager". It loads when I run the scanner and stays there. Even when I quit the Canon Toolbox, it stays up and running. When it whacks the system next time, I'll try to get to the process manager and see if that thing is hogging up CPU cycles.
85% during idle is just insane, and they think its normal is crazy in my book. I think I'll start using Image Capture for now on. Being thats its an Apple App, I hope it will play friendlier with the OS and not play naughty like the Cannon apps.

  • 5.1 or 5.1.2 has brought FCP to its knees!

Last week I received my FCP 5.1 Crossgrade. I installed the Crossgrade and then proceeded to install the 5.1.2 update from Apple's website.
After installing these updates I have experienced numerous problems. The audio in several projects is out of sync, or 'drifting', whereas they were previously fine, i.e. synced up.
I am not able to capture. FCP does not read my cameras (FW). And I know that it is not the port, because the 'System Profiler' reads the FW port, and iMovie will capture from it as well.
    Any ideas?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
(Yes, I now know that you shouldn't install updates in the middle of the project. I am more concerned with the inability to capture than I am the state of the projects. I was going to attempt to remedy the 'drifting' issue by recapturing the source file...but that can't happen...no capturing!)

    Brian,
Thanks. I followed those steps, but to no avail. I went to 'Library' / 'Receipts' / Quicktime, and then put the Quicktime files with numbers behind them in the Trash.
I then downloaded QT, and restarted the computer. I then opened FCP, and still not reading the FW port.
Do I now need to go to the 'Library/Receipts' and delete the new file w/a number behind it?
    Thanks.

  • ITunes brings my PC to its knees during song import

iTunes takes 95-100% of my CPU processing whenever it imports songs from a CD. Basically, it brings the machine to its knees. Also, the import speed is rarely above 2x. I have a Pentium (~400Mhz) with 512Mb of memory. The NEC DVD drive holding the CD is brand new. On my PC at my job, iTunes imports from a CD at 20x, and doesn't bring the machine to a standstill while doing it.
This cannot just be that my PC at work is faster, altho it is. What else can I do?

Here is an article from the apple support website that might help out.

  • WAP4410N bringing LAN to its knees

I have a two WAP4410N’s. WAP#1 is configured as an Access Point with “Allow wireless signal to be repeated by a repeater” checked. WAP#2 is configured as a Wireless WDS Repeater. Both are running firmware 2.0.4.2, with WPA2 Personal. Each gets it’s IP addresses via DHCP.
The APs run fine for weeks, and then suddenly I start getting complaints from users of the wired Ethernet LAN that everything is “frozen”. A quick check shows a massive amount of traffic on the wired LAN coming from the WAP, such that the LAN is virtually unusable. My Ethernet switch shows a large amount of Rx errors on the port for WAP#1.  As soon as I unplug the WAP from the LAN switch, the LAN goes back to normal. I plug the WAP back in, and the network slows to its knees. A simple way to see this visually is setup a ping session from one wired client to another. As soon as I plug in WAP#1, the pings start timing out.
I did some experimenting with this today. With NO wireless clients enabled, and WAP#2 powered down, I plugged in WAP#1 – no problem. However, when I powered up WAP#2, the LAN bogged down again. Unplugged WAP#2, and back to normal. Next I tried to connect to WAP#1 via a web browser, and it wouldn’t bring me to the logon page, even though WAP#1 was responding to ping. I power cycled WAP#1, now everything is working normally again.
In summary – for some inexplicable reason, the WAP4410N is going into a mode where it is sending so much traffic to the wired network that it is slowing it to a crawl. The biggest problem I have with this at the moment is that if it happens when I (the only IT guy) is out of the office, I have no way to stop it. I can’t remote in, or anything, because of the interruption to the LAN.
I would really like to get this figured out and fixed. I replaced WAP#1 with a brand new WAP4410N, and that didn’t help. I don’t have any other ideas.
    Thanks

    Robert,
WAP#2 isn't attached to anything, it gets its signal from WAP#1.
Yes, I am using one SSID.
Both WAP's are using channel 6.
Both are in Mixed B/G/N mode, as we need to support all these.

  • Plugin-container.exe brought my PC to its knees. How to stop this?

I had absolutely no response from my computer for several minutes. After repeatedly trying to open the task manager, I finally succeeded. I noticed that plugin-container.exe was running at over 50%. I attempted to close all the running processes, but they were hung. I finally had to shut off my PC. One of your background processes should not be hijacking my computer for minutes! Please fix this!!!!!!
Also, your submit feedback is not working.

I found the way to stop using plugin-container.exe from somewhere and it works.
    Steps to stop plugin-container.exe process:
    * Open Firefox web browser.
    * Type about:config in the address bar and press Enter key.
    * A warning will appear. Ignore it and press the "I』ll be careful, I promise!" button.
    * In the Filter field type dom.ipc. Six preferences will appear for the filter dom.ipc.
    * Ignore first and last preferences. Toggle (double-click) each of the four remaining preferences to change the value from "true" to "false".
Explanation: The crash protection feature in Firefox 3.6 is enabled for certain plugins only. The four preferences that we modified here specifies four different out-of-process plugins. They are the the NPAPI test plugin, Adobe Flash, Apple QuickTime (Windows) and Microsoft Silverlight (Windows). These plugins are specified in a separate dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.<filename> preference by default is set to true. We can disable them by changing their value to false. And thus plugin-container.exe will not run. By default the preference dom.ipc.plugins.enabled is already set to "false". So, no need to touch it. The dom.ipc.plugins.timeoutSecs is also not important here as other values are false.

  • Image processor in OSX looses its settings.

I recently switched from Windows to OSX. I use the image processor a lot (CS6). On Windows my settings were remembered. On OSX they are not and I have to save them and later load them again. Is this normal behavior or am I doing something wrong?

well, I think I at least found a work around. If I save the settings I want as new camera defaults, it keeps the conversion consistent.

  • My Bootcamp Partition has disappear from OSX and its impossible to activate

    Hello,
i`m using Bootcamp with Win XP, and now the partition has disappear from the desktop of OSX. When i use the HD-Diagnostic tool i can see the partition as unactivated. Trying to activate is not possible. But the partition seems to be working, because i can still start Win XP when i reboot and hold the "alt" Key. Then i can choose between OSX and WinXP and it goes fine. Is there a way to activate this partition in OSX? Because i want to delete WinXP from my Apple.

    Hi
To remove the WinXP partition you have to run Bootcamp Assistant (Application/Utilities) again, it should give you the option to (not sure of exact words)Remove Windows and Return to one partition.
This question should have really been asked in the Boot Camp Public Beta Forum. The first thread in that forum is called Uninstalling Boot Camp but gives the same instructions as I have.

  • Why doesn't OSX hide its files?

    Greetings!
After surfing the boards for the last couple of years I have come to the conclusing that too many folks just move files, apps, folders and the like too much. (We probably got that from OS9) Why didn't the programmers for OSX "hide" all the system files that shouldn't be moved around? I see a lot of "oh yes I did move this library to there" or I changed this or that. Looks like they would have made it more difficult for newbees to mess things up. Tom

    Hi Tom,
Darwin is the operating system and much of it is hidden. You don't see the mach_kernel or directories (folders) such as bin or sbin in the Finder. Then many files in the System directory are wrapped in bundles. Bundles are a way to present many files as one. A bundle is really a folder or directory. The permission model prevents your "carte blanche" perception on how system files can be moved or modified. Users must elevate their status to the root user to move or modify system files. Any modifications to the permissions model would make the OS more difficult to use. I guess the System directory was left visible to comfort users that some reference within the file system is running their computer.

  • IMovie is bringing Snow Leopard to its knees

Well, so far it seems that Snow Leopard is snappy as long as it's not being used much. Once you start using some heavy applications - you'll get more beachball than you've ever seen.
I've tried to import a movie from my HD camcorder today. The movie is about 10 minutes long. It took about 10 minutes to import it into the latest iMovie, but while importing it, Snow Leopard became basically impossible to use: Safari would freeze up and beachball all the time, flash movies in it wouldn't play at all (or would play like a frame every 5-10 seconds), switching between applications takes half-a-minute.
So I launched Activity Monitor (which alone took about a minute). iMovie was taking the most memory - about 245 megabytes. At the same time Memory tab would show that there are over 2 gigabytes of "Active" memory (meaning being actively used). When I summed up all used memory from Activity monitor - I got just under 1G. But Activity Monitor is showing that there's also about 1 gigabyte _in swap_ already! And that's on a 4 gigabyte MacBook Pro, with nothing running except for Safari, Mail and iMovie! Where's all the memory gone?
And that's not just while importing the movie, but also when trying to do anything with it. After awhile iMovie simply freezes completely, so that I have to basically Force-Quit it.
So far it seems like there's either some severe memory leakage going on, or Snow Leopard dedicates ALL available memory to a disk cache, giving the cache the highest priority, while reducing the amount of memory available to applications.
Besides that, there always seems to be the "mds" process always doing something - even when there's no other activity in the system. It always takes about 10-20% of CPU time, and almost always working with the hard drive.
P.S. I've force-quit iMovie about 2 minutes ago, and the icon in Dock was not showing it as a "running" application for about as long, and only now I've got a message from Snow Leopard that iMovie stopped responding... 8-O It's not been running for almost 2 minutes now, why do I get this message now, 2 minutes after it's been killed???

but now it is going like a fair and is a really good improvement from 06.
iMovie 09 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.
iMovie 06 and iDVD 09 is a "lossless" combination and my DVD's look perfect!
iMovie 09 is a wonderful program assuming that you're using it for what it was designed to do, assemble videos to share on the Internet.

  • Serious playback defect due to incorrect handling of album art

There is a serious issue with either the iPod firmware or the iTunes software that is causing erratic performance, skips in music, and, in a few rare instances, complete freezing of the iPod.
The issue either lies in how iTunes 'optimizes artwork' for the iPod, or in how the iPod reads and displays artwork from its database. Basically, the problem occurs when you select a song with album artwork and, for whatever reason, the iPod cannot handle the reading and displaying fast enough and it chokes momentarily, resulting in a very noticeable skip in the music playback.
This isn't all artwork, mind you - I see the problem more frequently with larger size and higher complexity pieces of artwork. I'm not sure why size and content are a factor, as the iTunes software supposedly 'optimizes artwork' to whatever extent is necessary so the iPod can utilize it properly, but there is definitely a correlation between the music skipping and the quality of the file.
For songs that also have lyrics, the iPod is brought completely to its knees. My 60GB 5G Video iPod consistently completely skips over songs with artwork and lyrics (if I select them, songs that are simply next in line on a playlist always play fine because there is more than enough time for them to be loaded into cache while the previous song plays).
I wasn't immediately sure what was causing these skips (both in music, and the complete skipping of songs) but on a whim I told the iPod not to display artwork - everything began to immediately work perfectly. Every song I tested loaded fine and played without a single skip, even the previous problem tracks with lyrics. Telling the iPod to display artwork again brought the problem right back full force.
I've restored the iPod numerous times, toggled display artwork on and off to force it to re-optimize near a dozen times now, and even this afternoon completely uninstalled iTunes, iPod software, and Quicktime from my computer, restarted, and reinstalled everything. I tried a friends computer the other day and same results every single time.
The problem was actually lessened by getting rid of all non-album art pictures - a lot fewer songs skipped, but some still did. Restoring the iPod and only putting ~10 tracks (10 of the really bad ones) produced unusual results - they all played fine. But then loading more tracks brought the problem back again (I have a 40 GB collection). Put pictures back on it and forget about it. So this leads me to believe that the iPod can't properly handle a large artwork database - long load times would be fine, but there must be something in the iPod's software that forces it to continue on after a certain amount of time has passed, whether it is ready or not, and that causes these skips.
This same exact problem plays out in the exact same way on a 60GB 4G Photo iPod - it's actually worse, probably because the newer 5G iPods have faster hardware that compensates a little better. I don't remember having these problems pre-iTunes 6 when I just had the 4G Photo iPod, but I never did a lot of testing. With the newest firmware and iTunes 6.0.2.23, both the 4G and 5G iPods are a mess.
Just for reference, all tracks I've been testing with are ripped directly from commercial CDs I own using Exact Audio Copy and LAME 3.97 - they all play flawlessly on the computer, in iTunes and other pieces of audio software, and they all play fine on the iPod when it is set not to display album artwork. My album artwork is normally ~500 x 500 pixels, and in JPEG format, so ~50-80 KB. So it is not insanely detailed, and iTunes is supposed to create all the proper sizes for use on the iPod so the iPod doesn't have to convert anything on the fly.

    Good detective work....
    Thanks for the heads up.
I just got a fifth gen Video 60g iPod and loaded my first tracts from my CD collection today.
After enjoying album art from my iTunes downloads I was a bit dissappointed my CD album art did not transfer with the selected CD tracks...but after reading your post...now I'm not so sure I want to struggle trying to get album art to transfer with my CD tracks...

  • Aperture vs. iphoto library manager

I have > 37,000 photos, and am adding constantly.  This seems to have brought iphoto to its knees.  It keeps re-dating half of my photos to 2041, and runs slowly.  At the Apple store they advised switching to aperture.  Someone else suggested iphoto library manager.  I am less concerned about the cost ($70 vs. $24) than saving time-I work 80-100 hours a week, and I do not have hours and hours to "make things work."  I would greatly appreciate comments and suggestions.  Thanks.

If iPhoto is slow when browsing the iPhoto library, apertre will probably slow too. Both applications are sharing the same library format.
    I have > 37,000 photos,
That is no reason for iPhoto being slow, unless your libryr is so large, that there is not enough space left on your drive.  How much free space is on your system drive and the drive with your iPhoto library?
Keep at least 20 GB free on your internal drive and more on the drives , where you are storing your photo libraries. Libraries may need temporarily more storage, when they are being repaired or rebuild.
What is your iPhoto version and MacOS X version? And how much RAM has your Mac?
Did the slowness start, after you imported new photos? Then this may be temporary and iPhoto still be processing faces, previews, etc. Or one of the photos or videos you imported is not readable and needs to be removed.
Did you install or upgrade any new software recently?
Also, iPhoto may be slow, if the library needs repairing.
Try to repair the library as described by Old Toad  ':Rebuild iPhoto Version 11:
If repairing does not help, update the backup pf your library and try rebuilding.

  • Make 2 (4? 10?) discrete luminance levels in Aperture?

Hi. Tonight's puzzler. Is there any way, using Aperture, to create a luminance map of an image which maps every pixel to a luminance bin? At its simplest, this would take an image and reduce it to black & white (not Grayscale) -- two bins -- where every pixel above a certain luminance (user settable preferred) would be colored white (luminance = 100%) and every pixel at or below that certain luminance would be colored black (luminance = 0%).
Even at that level I could make good use of such a tool (as long as the dividing line is movable), but I really want something which maps the image to more discrete steps. The Munsell system uses ten levels, which would be good. I would be equally happy with five.
There are ways to set the Levels Brick to give four (or six) steps from a grayscale image (make a "V" or an "M" or a "W"). This is a fairly kludgy work-around, though. I've set up five different Adjustment pre-sets for different "binnings". In use it is inelegant and impractical. I have tried using multiple Levels Bricks with different Brush Ranges. Sad to report, applying this as a saved pre-set repeatedly brought Aperture to its knees.
If there are other programs which can do this with aplomb (I don't know much about Photoshop), please point me in the right direction. This is just one of several more-or-less metrical image analyses I am essaying.
    As always, thanks!

    Keith Barkley wrote:
    Continuing the PhotoShop idea:
There is a plug-in (or there used to be!) called "filter factory" which would let you create filters using expressions that would apply to every pixel in the image. The expressions look soemthing like this:
    r: if (r < 128)?0:r
    g: if (g < 128)?0:g
    b: if (b < 128)?0:b
which would set each component to 0 if it is less than a value of 128.
Of course, it is much more versatile than this, it would be pretty easy to do what you want with this tool.
    <a class="jive-link-external-small" href="http://">http://www.creativemac.com/2002/02_feb/tutorials/filterfactorycomplete2.htm
Exactly! Exactly what I am looking for. Your link is from 2002, and I can't find any up-to-date information. Do you know if Filter Factory is still available? Has the functionality (writing expressions which are applied to each pixel) been incorporated into the current version of Photoshop?
One of my frustrations with Aperture is that, although the Bricks are the equivalent of sophisticated transform functions operating on each pixel, Aperture neither specifies what the functions are, nor lets one modify them. (I would be ecstatic if something like Filter Factory were available for Aperture.)
For instance, the Vibrancy parameter is defined in the Help file this way:
+The Vibrancy parameter applies saturation to the image in a nonlinear manner. Colors that are already saturated are left alone, while saturation is added to all other colors. In addition, the Vibrancy parameter takes skin tones into account, leaving them untouched.+
That is good to know, but incomplete. It suggests, but doesn't specify, the shape of the non-linear curve (two curves, actually -- one for saturation and another for hue). I could make much use of the knowledge of the parameters' explicit definitions. And I could I dance downtown if we were provided sliders to change the definitions.
    Maybe Aperture 5.x.
