I Built A Site On iWeb, what next?

I built my website on iWeb and am now ready to make it live. What do I have to do in order to do this? Do I have to buy MobileMe? I also want to have my own domain name like www.myname.com
So I know I have to buy the domain name on somewhere like GoDaddy.com, but what else do I need to do? Thanks for helping a newbie

Wyodor posted a slick method of making an image of the photo and frame to replace the photo and frame which will be composed of many image files that make up the frame.
1 - Select the photo in iWeb.
2 - Open Preview and select File->New From Clipboard (Command+N).
3 - Go to the File menu and select Select All (Command+A)
4 - go back to iWeb and do a paste (Command+V).
This will give you an single image file of the photo and frame to replace the multiple files. Then delete the original photo. This will facilitate faster loading of your site in browsers.

  • Published site w/ iWeb but next time opening iWeb no content was there

I recently published updates to my site but the next time I opened iWeb there was no content & I was asked which templet I wanted to use - as if I was opening for the first time. Is there any way to reload the content into iWeb - if so how? Thanks in advance for any time & effort in helping me.

Guy ~ Assuming you haven't inadvertently logged in to a different User Account, try this... Via Spotlight's magnifying glass icon at upper right of your screen, search for iWeb's Domain file(s) by entering this:
    .site
...and see what shows up in the drop-down list of hits. Note that any files which may be iWeb's Domain file won't be displayed as filename.site — rather they'll be displayed simply as filename, where filename could be anything you've perhaps renamed the original Domain file to be.

If you can't find it, be aware that only iWeb's Domain file can be opened in iWeb. See this Apple doc on How to back up MobileMe data. It says:
Any websites you have published with iWeb should still be available within iWeb. iWeb stores everything in a Domain file, normally located in the ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder (although it can be moved). If you no longer have this file, you can view your currently published pages and manually recreate them within iWeb, but there is no way to import published pages back into iWeb. You can manually back up the Domain file, or use Backup to back it up.
Paragraph 2.3 of this FAQ page gives some tips on how to use published files, graphics, photos, etc., to help rebuild the site from scratch:

  • I am an artist who built my site on iWeb 08. Although I have easily been able to transfer to Godaddy, my ability to publish is limited. I must upload my entire site and it is time consuming. How do I convert to iWeb 09 and is this easy to do?

Help! I am an artist who had my site professionally designed on iWeb 08. Although I have  been able to transfer to Godaddy, my ability to publish is limited. I must upload my entire site and it is time consuming.  I was advised to update to IWeb 09 (which I could get, I think? from Amazon) because it has a built- in option to publish to any FTP. How do I convert my 08 folder to an 09 folder?  Will it convert correctly?  I know eventually I will need to rebuilt the site, but I would like to use this option for awhile to buy time. Is this feasible? I currently own a Mac Pro.

Its just a question of installing the later version of iWeb from the iLife disk and opening your website in that version. Its a good idea to have a backup of your Domain.sites2 file before doing this. See this page for its location...

  • What happens if I delete a site in iweb?  site still on the web? system?

B/c of my various issues i'm having since upgrading iweb, I created two test sites on iweb09. I was able to upload them to the web and to a folder.
I deleted both. Later, I created another test site with the same name (site 2). I noticed this one was acting weird.
I'm wondering what happens to the sites after they are deleted.
    1. Are they available on the web?
    2. Are they somewhere else on my system that I should make sure to delete?
    Thx.

Deleting sites inside iweb does not have any effect on what has been published on a server or to a folder on your local drive. It just changes what is in iWeb's domain file.

  • Created a web site in iweb, i have a domain through godaddy, what resource can I use as host?

Created a web site in iweb. I have a domain name through GoDaddy, What resource should I use to make site public?

I would agree that it helps the newcomer to FTP to have a hosting service whose tech support understand the unique structure of iWeb created sites. I have lost count of the number of users who have asked me to sort out problems created by tech support employed by numerous hosting services - including the mighty GoDaddy.
A lot of tech support people don't seem to bother to look at the form and function of the iWeb index.html files and advise users that they have to rename their home page to "index". While this holds true for most websites, it certainly doesn't apply to iWeb.
Its not "simply the html and css files". How many users come unstuck when they forget about the feed.xml?
People who hand out advice in this forum about uploading files via "Cyberduck" tend to miss out the part about the importance of maintaining the site structure by uploading the whole folder created by iWeb plus the external index.html.
They also may not have been around back when I first announced that I uploaded the contents of the iWeb folder to get rid of the site name in the URL. I was shot down in flames by the iWeb "experts" and told that this was impossible - even although I was obviously doing it!
Although this method of uploading the files has become accepted practice in the iWeb community I wouldn't recommend it to those who are new to FTP unless they have help from a tech support person who actually understands the problems involved and can point out the downside. Those who claim that it is "simple" and "easy" have obviously forgotten the first time that they tried it!
A lot of the people who come to this forum for help with FTP end up in a complete mess due to the conflicting and inadequate advice they get due to the fact that the "adviser" hasn't a clue about the hosting account structure and can't view the actual files. In many cases, I have had to go into the users hosting account and sort out the mess created by bad advice and ignorance. This should really be done by the hosting service's tech support but, in many cases, they helped create the problem in the first place.
The mere fact that an iWeb user has to come to this forum for help with FTP seems to suggest that their hosting service has inferior tech support.

    Saw this on another post.
Applecare Senior Advisor Txx Bxxx (I have his contact info in an email he just sent) just confirmed with me that the problem people are having with the App Store not loading is an apple issue with there servers, ITS NOT YOUR IPAD so don't go restoring it!   It's not happening to everyone however but they are looking into it, its really hit or miss.

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
This works for some users. Not sure why.
Go to Settings>General>Date and Time> Set Automatically>Off. Set the date ahead by about a year. Then see if you can connect to the store.

Hello. I have just built a website using iWeb but cannot upload it. I curently have the 25gb account. There doesn't appear to be any facility here for the net. Am I correct in thinking I need an upgrade, or am I doing something wrong?  Thanks

iCloud does not provide website hosting. You will need to find another website hosting service - there are many to choose from - and upload your site there. How you do this depends on what version of iWeb you have.
In order to upload your existing site in iWeb '09 and above:
Click on the name of the site in the sidebar: the publishing settings pane will open. Set 'Publish to' to 'FTP'. Enter the name of the site and a contact address (if desired).
In the 'FTP Server Settings' section you will need to know the server address (your hosting service can tell you that), and your username and password for that service. Your site will be published in a folder with its name at root level of the server, with an index.html file at root level (which will overwrite any index.html file which may be there already). The 'Directory/Path' field may need to include a path such as '/webspace/' or 'ht_docs/' - this is dependent on your hosting service and they should tell you this. If you want to publish within a folder you can add that to the path.
You can then click the 'Test connection' button so that iWeb can check that it can get access to your server space. You should enter the URL of the site in the 'URL' field so that rss feeds and internal links have the correct address.
To publish using an earlier version of iWeb:
From the File menu choose 'Publish to a folder'. You should create a folder somewhere convenient specifically for this and choose it when publishing to a folder: this folder should not contain anything else.
You now need an FTP program (FTP is the 'protocol' used for uploading) to upload the contents of the folder to your server.Cyberduck is free (donation requested): Transmit is $34 but I think better. You will need the server address (your hosting service can tell you that), and your username and password for that service. You can drag the contents of your folder to your webspace, or create a folder there and drag the contents to that if you prefer.
Some facilities that iWeb provided when hosted on MobileMe will not work on other servers: comments on weblogs and photos, password-protecting your site (some hosts may provide this), searching in the weblog, and a hits counter (again, some hosts can provide code for this). Slideshows in iWeb will work on other hosts than MobileMe (they use different code when FTPing which doesn't depend on scripts hosted on MobileMe as the MobileMe version does); however there is an issue with the 'buttons' which control the slideshow which are images hosted on me.com - these depend on images which used to be hosted on MobileMe. The poster 'Old Toad' on the Apple Forums has provided a workaround, described at http://oldtoadstutorials.net/No.26.html.

  • Business sites with iweb

    Hi
I've a few questions about creating my new business site with iweb and whether it's worth doing it with iweb (loving the designs I can do) or stick with dreamweaver or use sandvox.
I've built one site already with iweb http://www.weddingcooperation.co.uk
I've got this entered onto google using the webmaster tools, but i'm not sure if it'll be found properly. As it's a directory I need the company names and categories to be found, but I'm not sure if that'll work as they're imbedded into images. what's the best way around this, and does it work as it is?
My main worry is doing all the work in making it look pretty in iweb and then it not being found.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    angela,
your one page looks lovely - and since you did it so nicely on iWeb, i suggest you do the other site on iWeb two! its just so much easier!
and if you want to get your site on google - you always have to do something, wether sandvox or dreamweaver.

  • Synchronizing 2 sites using iweb

    Hello everyone,
I have already created a site using iweb & now need to create another one for another business of mine.
How do i synchronize it with Mobileme as i already have a personal domain listed?
    Please Help!!!!
    Thank You.

Here's how to have multiple sites in a single MMe account with one or more sites having a domain name.
    A. All sites are in the same Domain.sites2 files
1 - only one site can use the CNAME method of domain name forwarding and it must  the top site in the left hand pane of iWeb.
2 - the other sites must use URL domain name forwarding which directs the domain name to the site's full MMe URL, http://web.me.com/MMe_Username/Site_Name,  or, if there is no domain name, just MobileMe's full URL.
    B. Each site is in its own Domain.sites2 file.
Again, only one site can use CNAME forwarding.  This presents a problem since CNAME forwarding directs the domain name to the basic MMe account URL: http://web.me.com/MMe_Username/ which uses an index.html file in the root folder of the account, iDisk/Web/Sites. Each time a new site is published or an existing site uses the File->Publish Entire Site a new index.html file is created in that root directory, iDisk/Web/Sites folder, directing the browser to that particular site.  This file is what the CNAME method uses to find the site it represents.  Therefore some steps must be taken to assure that the index.html file in the MMe Accounts root directory always points to the correct site.  This can be accomplished is three ways.
1 - don't use the CNAME method.  Just use  URL forwarding .  This, IMO, is the simplest method as it doesn't requre any additional effort on the user once the domain name has been set up.
2 - use the following method suggested by Wyodor in this topic: Is it possible to have multiple sites when using ur Domain name?
    In iWeb domainfile 1:
Create a dummy site : _dummy
    with a blank page.
Create your working site : Whatever
    Add pages
Publish both Sites to the same same location on the same server.
Your _dummy site is now the default Site.
    Check.
    In iWeb domainfile 2:
    Create/Use your CurrentSite.
Move a page to the top of the Site and back. Publish the Site.
iWeb will create a new index.html file in the root of the server and from now on CurrentSite is the default site.
    Check.
From now on, never move your Whatever Site to the top of the list in the iWeb sidebar and never change the page in the _dummy site.
Simply do not touch your _dummy ever again. And never forget that.
3 - use Ethmoid's suggested method in Using two sites - setting one up with separate domain? or republishing the entire site that uses  CNAME forwarding.  Just making a minor change and publishing the site changes does not create a new index.html file.
The entire site must be republsihing in order to get that new site.
Or keep a copy of the CNAME site's index.html file on your Mac and replace it manually in the iDisk/Web/Sites fodler when necessary.
NOTE:  the CNAME method provides a shorter URL:  http://www.Domain_Name.com/Site_Name/Page_Name.  CNAME does not have masking.
The URL forwarding displays the full MMe URL:   http://web.me.com/MMe_Username/Domain_Name/Page_Name.   With domain name masking that will be shortened to:   http://www.Domain_Name.com for every page of your site.
However, with masking visitors will only be able to bookmark and enter at the first page of the site.  If a page is refreshed the visitor is taken back to the first page.  Also search engines will only be able to index the first page of the site.
Just a thought:  since MobileMe will be discontinued next June 30, 2012, you might start looking for a new host to put your sites on. I'm familar with HostExcellence.com which has a couple of package specials which include free domain names. One for $8/mo with 3 free names and one for $4/mo with one free name.   There are others with similar offers.  HE has excellent 24/7 ear-to-ear customer support.

My Ipod mini syncs, but when I go to play, no sound.  I've tried multiple speakers and headphones. No Go.  What next?
My latest problem is that the Apple site will not recognize my equipment by it's serial number.  I know the mini is old, but I like what it did for me and don't necessarily want to "upgrade".

This is the iPad in the Enterprise forum. You'll be more likely to get help with your issue if you ask in the appropriate iPod forum.

I have created a site with iWeb. I have replaced the iWeb Nav bar with a vertical one I made myself. Problem is, my top button disables itself (and the animation doesn't work) if it overlaps into the "hidden" nav bar area (indicated by a blue rectangle). I can cmd click and drag it into this area, but then all the rest of my site is pushed down the page. Don't know what to do about this. I don't know how to bring the rest of the page up without dragging it also into the designated nav bar area. Also, by doing this, is it affecting my site in ant way? see my site here at www.steveburrowsimages.com
The home page is with it all draged into the nav bar area and the about page is with is outside the nav bar area (notice that the top button does not animate or work as a button.
Getting confused here. Anyone got any ideas?

Well, you made a good start with SEO by getting rid of the iWeb default navigation since it doesn't help the spiders and, out there in the real world, there are more people than you would think with javascript turned off in their browsers.
One of the downsides of iWeb is that it doesn't allow for the alt attribute in the img tag. Its well worth adding these to give you extra keywords even if you have captioned all your images. Use iWeb SEO Tool for this...
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/Search-Engine-Optimization/Tags.html
iWeb, just like most drag and drop software, creates a huge amount of code which causes the pages to load slowly in the browser. Running you files through an optimizer will help to reduce this problem and further reduce the size of image files even beyond the initial optimization you do before loading them into iWeb...

  • I have a password protected site in iweb, but how do I get my users to "sign out" so there not always logged in

I built a password protected site in iweb and its published through mobileme. How do I get users to "sign out" so there not always logged in

I wouldn't bother really - it would be best to concentrate your efforts now on finding another web host that you can move your site to because after the end of June this year, publishing to MobileMe won't be an option.
Have a look at GoDaddy, HostExcellence etc. and you can still password protect your website, but you just do this through your host/server rather than MMe.
Start looking now before it's too late!

    Hi,
I have published a site in iWeb but it looks different when viewed in the web browser having published a few times.
The pictures have small frames around which display perfectly i niweb but do not show in browser?
The navigation menu is all showing in iweb but again not showing in the web browser?
Not sure what I am doing wrong? I have tried to publish a few times.. checked that all the tick boxes show 'display navigation menu' etc?

I noticed on the Pricing page that I cannot click the Gallery link. Something covering it?
    Other pages have similar behaviour.
And there's no link for the home page. Perhaps you're hiding it.
And see if you can use a shorter, and different, Sitename. It is clear who you are. And just welcome is enough.

  • How do i open my pre existing iWeb created site in iWeb? (computer got wiped entirely without backup)

I have a pre exisiting website that i built with iweb about 2 years ago. Within the last month my computer got wiped entirely. I was unable to do a backup before this happened because it froze up in the middle of a software update. How do i open my site in iweb to continue editing it?? It is still online, is there a way to import it? Thank you!

Unfortunately, iWeb does not have an import feature. So, the website will need to be recreated. With, it being online you may be able to copy and paste your content from the site online to the one that you will be recreating in iWeb.

  • How do I set the default site in iWeb '09

I have several sites built in iWeb, like most people do. However I want one specific site to be the default. How do I tell iWeb which folder to pick?
In addition to this question, I have iWeb on another computer that I would like to upload a site I've been working on too. However, I don't want the second computer to override the first.
It would be easier to show you...
    my site is located here
    - http://web.me.com/wlamagdeleine/
I want my default page to be located at...
But I built a different page on a second Mac and I want to upload it as well, but not make it the default...
How do I tell iWeb all of this?

If you have more than one domain file in different folders and want to open one of them in particular when you open the application, put a copy of its domain file into Home Folder/Library/Application Support/iWeb
    When you enter the URL...
    http://web.me.com/username/
... the site whose index.html file exists in Finder/Go/iDisk/My iDisk/Web/Sites opens.
When you upload the site - iwayne - its index.html file will replace the default. You need to keep a copy of the index file for the default site and upload it to Finder/Go/iDisk/My iDisk/Web/Sites by drag and drop after you publish changes to the site - iwayne.
To see the iwayne site in the browser you will enter the URL....
    http://web.me.com/username/iwayne/PageName.html
... where iwayne is the name of the site in iWeb and PageName is the name of the Home page.
