I burned an exercise DVD using disk utility and when I played it in my DVD player it was choppy and skipped. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Use mkisofs to create the disc image, and burn it with hdiutil or drutil. (Some of the free options mentioned above actually use mkisofs.)

Ok, all I want to do it burn a data cd using disk utility. Everything I read talks about "disk images" and "ISO's" how do I just pick a file and burn it? When I go into disk utility and click burn all of my files are transparent and I can't select any of them. How do I simply burn files?

It's normal behavior. You don't have to worry about. Most of what's listed is just a report of what the utility finds., not necessarily that there is omething wrong.

Those look alot like file names and not infection names. I don't find any reference to anything like that on Norton or VirusTotal. Since you said these were Trojans, I would expect to see "Trojan" as part of the infection name.
".jar" files are executable Java applets. The random alpha-numerics would seem to indicate a cache file, likely from a browser with Java enabled. And we all know what ".zip" means.
Worst case is that you had Java enabled in a browser and were infected by one of the late variants of the Flashback Trojan over a year ago or one of a couple of other attacks using the same vulnerability but targetted against a small number of political sympathizers. Much more probable is that thes were Windows only Trojans. Hopefully you have a fully up-to-date OS X, including Java, and have disabled Java in all your browsers by now.

You would need to have burned the disc using iDVD or a third-party application such as Toast. Is that what you did?

Getting medium write error on burning a disc image using Disk utility

Have a MacBrook Pro 15 inch, circa Summer 2007, using OX 10.4.11. up until recently (as in before February) have been able to burn DVD's using Toast (message Medium Writer Error). Started getting problems where the burn failed. Thought maybe it was Toast, so I tried creating an iDVD project and tried to burn the DVD using that, and it stopped in the middle as well and then spit the disk out with no error message.
, this time I tried creating a disc image, and used disk utility to burn. The process looked like it was going to work but then failed with a message that I have a medium write error.
I have no problems burning a regular data disk on my superdrive so I am thinking it's maybe a software glitch rather than hardware. . Any thoughts, as to what could be causing this problem all of a sudden. By the way, there are other users out there, who seems to be having DVD burning problems all of a sudden, but most people suggest other media. I am using the same stack of DVD-R's from before when I had no problem.

Well, I had assumed my media was ok, since I had a spindle of DVD-R's and had used many of them successfully (until now!, ha ha).
I went out this afternoon and bought another brand (Memorex) and it successfully recorded.
So hopefully this solves my problem, I had no idea it was the media since I had used several of them before.

Burning info CD's using Disk Utility?

Ok, I've got a combo drive (a few years old, on my iBook G3). I'm trying to burn information CDs using Disk Utility. I've got the dmg in disk utility, I select it and click burn. It then asks what speed I want to burn the disk at etc etc.
So, I select the slowest setting (4x) avaible. After its been burning for about 2 minutes, it said the burn ended because it had no burn underrun protection.
What is wrong?

1. Launch Disk Utility at /Applications/Utilities.
2. Insert CD that is not copy protected.
3. In the upper pane, click on the 1st lower level of the CD path...
4. go to...Image>New... and select "Image from [disk/volume name]
5. In the dialog window that appears..select or type.......
• Name • location (desktop)
• Encryption mode (disregard)
• Image Format.(select DVD/CD master)
6. Click "Save"
Note. depending on your choice of image format...
• Selecting DVD/CD NMaster... .cdr will be created
• Selecting read-only or read/write.... dmg will be created.
7. The image file will appear in the lower Pane.
Note.... To checkout the steps so far....double-clicking on the image file will result in a disk image.(when you double-click on this, the contents will be revealed.
Steps (1-7) creates a image file of the CD.
8. Select the Image file that appears in the lower left Pane.
9. Select Images>Burn or... "Burn" from the Toolbar.
10. The CD drawer will open,remove the CD that you just copyed, insert blank CD and close drawer.
11. Burn options:
• Speed: Select a speed less than Maximum
• Verify Burns: (yes)
• Eject disc.. or .. Mount on desktop
12. Click on "Burn" in lower part of dialog.(Burn will change to Append If the Cd was previously appended)
13. And thats it...you are finished.

Resized partition using Disk Utility and now Windows 7 will not boot

Hopefully someone can help me!!
I had previously used Boot Camp to install Windows 7. However, I later realised I had not given myself anywhere near enough disk space as I started using Windows for things I hadn't originally planned on using it for.
Anyway, long story short, to solve the problem I uninstalled some applications on my Mac OSX and used Disk Utility to decrease the size of my Mac partition. My plan was then to reboot to Windows and use a Windows application to increase the size of the Windows partition. However - I coudln't even get that far.
Upon decreasing the size of my Mac partition (succesfully) I restarted my Mac in order to boot to Windows. However, I was greeted with a message along the lines of "unable to boot to Windows please insert boot disk and press any key" (I can't remember the exact message).
I was wondering if anyone knows of any way to restore my Windows partition, retaining all of my previously saved files on my Windows disk. It's probably a long shot, but the thought of losing everything I have been working on for the last few months is a sickening one.
What does give me a bit of hope is that, if I click Boot Camp it seems to recognise that Windows 7 is installed as the option that appears is to uninstall it.
Furthermore, if I view partitions in Disk Utility, a "DISK0S4" is listed. However, it's only at 20gb - if this WAS my BootCamp partition previously, it was originally at something around 60gb (I think - either way, definitely bigger than 20gb!).
On top of this, my current Macintosh HD parition is at 260gb and with the DISK0S4 partition at 20.21gb, there seems to be some space missing... I'm hoping this is the files I've been working on over the last few months!
Anyway, I've done some searching on the net and it *seems* that GPT fdisk *might* be my savour. I've downloaded it but have no idea how to use it and don't plan on playing about with it as I could no doubt do some real damage. If it is likely to solve my problem however, I'm certainly more than capable of being walked through what I need to do.

I also have problems with Windows rebooting after partition resize trying to reduce Mac side and increase Windows side. I do not see the BootCamp partition labelled as such while running disk utility. The Windows partition shows up when I boot up while pressing the ALT key. However, when I try to run Windows, it says " error loading operatig system".
I also followed instruction and went through to run gdisk successfully. Results towards the end.
What can be done? Windows still does not boot and It shows ? Suspicious MBR at sector 0.

I was erasing my Macbook pro using disk utility and it is frozen? Help!?

Ok So I was erasing my macbook to restore it using the disk utility. When I clicked erase it began the proccess. It has been stuck staying unmounting disk for a few hours now and the mouse wont move. Restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys so you can access OS X: About OS X Recovery
From there you can reinstall OS X, repair the startup disk, and restore from a Time Machine backup.
FYI ... wiht ML installed, the only way to repair the startup disk is OS X Recovery, not the Disk Utility app installed on your Mac. You can verify but not repair.

In otherwords, I just want to be able to back up wireleslly but still acces all my files on both computers offline.

If you're talking about TIme Machine backup, it should be dleting as it goes but I agree you need more to run that effectively.
One solution, instead of TM would be to make a bootable clone with either SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner
and use that as your backup solution until you get a disk large enough for TM.

DVD player say's it's skipping over damaged area when dvd is fine

I have a problem playing box sets from abc studios on my Macbook Pro. They play perfectly well through the trailers and set up but as soon as I select play all or select an episode, they stop and I either get the error message "skipping over damaged area" before they hang or they just hang straight away. This has happened with four different box sets so far. The DVDs are fine and undamaged.

We have had the same problem ever since we bought our machine 60 days ago... Here's where we are: DVDs, even brand new ones, skip - "skipping over damaged area" on our iMac while our MBP and MB play them flawlessly. There is no loss in the movie, only the pause in play.
Our software is up to date, we took it into Apple over three trips: 1.) had them clean our dvd drive, 2.) problem persisted so we replaced the dvd drive, 3.) problem persisted so we wiped out our entire hard drive and did a software re-install and update... and problem still persists! We are are packing it up for a fourth time and will take it into Apple to have them replace the machine or all the parts...
We're bummed, it's our 3rd Apple computer and the 'biggest' and yet it cannot do the simple things? We'll keep you posted as to what happens.

I have tried with three different blank DVDs but all got the same error message. But after I got the error message when I reinsert the DVD I can see the ISO in the DVD. So I went a head with the installation but the installation stops just after it starts. I have even tried burning the disk at 2X speed.

It sounds like your optical drive may be dirty. The lens probably needs a cleaning. You can go to somewhere like Best Buy and pick up a cleaning kit.

RAID using disk utility and unequall drives

I just recieved 2 drives I need to RAID and unfortunately the retailer sent me 2 different drives.
I ordered 2 Maxtor Diamond Max10 250GB IDE drives.
I recieved one 250GB and one 300GB accidentally.
question is: Can I RAID them together anyway? (stripe, not mirror)
Will there be any disadvantages. I am using these for video editing.

Yes. You can RAID the 2 differently sized drives. No known disadvantages except for the fact that the retailer did not screw up twice and send you 2 of the 300s!
