I burned one cd successfully, but then the next three didn't work.

I just bought my make about a month and a half ago, and up till now there haven't been very many problems. I don't know much about computers...or common mac problems, so I was hoping to get some insight before I call the apple support people. Previously, I have watched a lot of dvds, listened to cds and burned a couple of cds with no problems.
However, last night I started having some issues with it. I burned one cd-r (the same sony brand ones that i always use) and it worked fine. Then I tried to make a second copy and everything was fine until the end of the burning cycle, when it unexpectedly ejected ("the attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry")while it was finishing. Thinking it might just be a faulty disk in the pack, I tried another...same problem. Then I went through the apple troubleshooting guide and I inserted the installation disk that comes with the iMac at there suggestion, but then the cd didn't appear on my desktop and thus wouldn't eject. I had to restart my iMac it later appears. Then I tried one more disk and again it failed and ejected during the "finishing" of the burn. And I might be imagining things, but lately I have been noticing that my drive has gotten quite loud when I insert any type of disk into my drive.
This doesn't seem normal it is kind of a sudden problem, I tried the cd's that failed to finish in my computer later, and only like the first 1 or two tracks are on it. The other disks I used to burn on my iMac before that worked fine, were sony's too so I don't think that this a brand cd-r brand thing. Is this something that is common to iMacs, a defect experienced by others? I don't want to have to waste a bunch of cd's everytime I want to burn a new one. I am curious to know.
That was long winded, but I would really appreciate any advice. Should I just call the apple people, will they tell me to send it them? I really don't want to have to send my computer out (I have a lot of term papers for university coming up). Also is the extended warrantee advisable?

In the meantime, have you checked out Mac 101 Lesson 1: Computer Crises the "My optical drive is making funny noises" link? It's possible you may need to try another CD brand.
I've had great success using FUJI based on the users recommendations here.

When you have a warranty, always utilize it. Especially if it's free. That's what it's for. As for Apple tech support advising you to "send your computer in" it depends on the problem. Most problems are settled over the phone.

For piece of mind, yes. It is totally up to you.
You have up to one year from the date of purchase to make up your mind.

  • I have an Ipod Touch 4th generation. I try to shuffle it and all it does is shuffle through songs that's artist begins with S. I can play other songs, but then the next song is always an S artist. Can anyone help?

    The normal suggestions.
    Close the app,off fully.  Double tap the home screen then touch and hold any of the icons on the task bar until they jiggle, then close them all off by touching the - sign.
    Then reboot the pad and try the spp again.  If same issue, delete the app, then reload it.  ( no charge). You may just have a bad copy.  If continues, write to the developer, they may need to do an update.  I have an older version of the same app and it works fine.
    Since yours is the ad supported version, they are maing real sure you see the ad.  Is it as simple as you need to click thru the ad to get to the game?

    IKR! But u an order a connector that can plug nto any old speakers and then connect to your charger port and it will play music!

    Let's try a standalone Apple Application Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of the issue.
    Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe installer file to your hard drive:

    This began nearly a week ago, I had just installed a few apps and my battery died. When I tried to turn the tablet back on it showed a dark blue or even greyish screen.     I have tried to hold the power button, does not work. It will only partially work while on the charger, nothing happens unless it is plugged in.

The recovery key worked and then I was sent to a page saying that my PC started wrong, restart. When I allow it to do so the process starts all over again...
    This tablet is only about 6 months old and I just started using it regularly a few months ago. It hasn't been damaged and I am certain there is no virus because I have software that I run weekly. I am clueless as to what to do to make this work. Has anyone else experienced this problem, if so how was it resolved?

    It seems that a few months ago Toshiba started shipping devices with Bitlocker enabled (one I bought a year ago did not have, one I bought in November did. I turned it off and decrypted the drive immediately.This seems to be an industry problem and not just Toshiba. "Someone" made a firmware revision that turned it back on since other Tablets have reported the same problem.
    I have seen reports of three stages of Bitlocker:
    1) Not encrypted - no key
    2) Encrypted using a personal key (may be stored in your Microsoft account and recovered from there - is about 25 digits)
    3) Encrypted but Bitlocker turned off. Key stored on hard drive and "decrypted on the fly". I suspect this is the problem and happens if Bitlocker is turned off but the drive is not decrypted (takes several minutes). If something happens to "lose" the key then there is a problem. I suspect the key is stored in the firmware (BIOS) and an update may wipe it..
    What I would do for any tab is two things:
    1) Open diskmgmt.msc and see if any drive mentions Bitlocker
    2) Go to "Search" and enter "drive encryption". See what it says
    If either mentions Bitlocker or "drive is encrypted" then I would go to Control Panel>Security>Bitlocker and decrypt the drive (not just turn off). If you need disk encryption then make sure you keep a copy of the key offline.
    If that does not work or it is locked already then a full recovery with reformat may be needed.

    Somewhat similar problem:
    Put in the password, hit enter, the screen goes blue for half a second, then goes back to login screen and carries on logging in as usual.  Drives me mad.  It doesn't happen with a fresh Lion installation, nor if booted into safe mode.  On the machine in question it also happens to new user accounts.
    I've removed all login items, including Startup Items and Launch Demons (pun intended) and Agents, I've compared system login plists with a fresh Lion installation - can't see differences.  I've removed Little Snitch and PeerGuardian (no more third party kexts).
    @Carolyn: I've done disk maintenance with DiskUtility and fsck and even DiskWarrior, cleaned caches, etc. etc.
    Any ideas would be gratefully received.
