I called Apple about the 20" iMac display problem today...

I have the same display problem that I've been reading about here, it's much much brighter on the bottom of my screen than on the top and viewing the screen from an angle makes the screen look very dusty and dirty.
First I talked to technical support and because I live 75 miles from an Apple store, he said a technician would come and look at it tomorrow even though I said it was a problem that is very common and just not on my computer. It will be interesting to see what the technician says.
Then I called customer relations to put in a formal complaint against the 20" iMac screens. I told the man that even on the Apple support forums here that everyone was complaining about it. He said everyone where he worked was using 20" iMacs and as he looked at the screens next to him, he noticed that the colors were all off, looking dirty brown like mine. He said that's just how the new 20" screens were. I tried my best to tell him that it just wasn't right that the screens were so flawed and, although he kind enough and understanding, he didn't see any big problem with them.
He did submit my formal complaint at the end but I have to tell you all, it sure looks like Apple does not see any problem with these screens. He suggested that I write to Apple at their corporate office to let them know of these problems. Here is that address:
Apple
1 Infinite Loop
Cupertino, CA 95014
So that's my next step, writing to the corporate office.
I'll update this post after the technician comes tomorrow. I really don't expect this to be fixed but I shall let everyone know.
Martha

I have been watching this forum for months and have come to a conclusion that Apple
has taken the "easy road" by using cheaper components as evidenced by these discussions pertaining to cheap lcd computer screens. Also, with the Imac there is limited upgrade paths and the fact now
the imac has become more of a glorified computer with the internals of a laptop which suggests it is almost mandatory to pay extra for apple care for 3 year warranty because of uncertainty for longevity in my opinion. I am still using an apple 2002 quicksilver G-4 computer almost 6 years old that has not given me and problem. I have also been able to upgrade the hard drive, dvd rom drive myself-you cannot readily do with the current imacs. I was thinking about replacing my G-4 with an Imac, but have now come to the conclusion that Apple is losing focus with providing quality products and unless something drastic happens which I doubt, Apple will lose me as a future customer. I may be forced to go to the other side and buy a PC.

  • Question about the new IMac display 2012 and pollution

The IMac late 2010 there is the problem that the fan behind the screen and glass environment pollution such as smoke, candle soot, heating dirt etc fans were absorbed and resulted in contamination streaks on the inside of the glass cover.
A new display technology is applied to the new IMac in 2012 and thus achieved a higher density of the display. Can Apple confirm that with this new display, the old dirt from the inside of the glass are excluded and will no longer occur?
    Thank you for answer

Good question, but you're not talking to Apple here, just users like yourself, so I doubt you'll get a definitive answer.

  • Just called Apple about the signal problem

I was on the phone for about an hour, mainly on hold. The first rep was very nice, and told me she was trying to get her supervisor on the line and that they were busy due to high call volume. Her and her supervisor both asked me if I had restored my phone or hard reset it, which I have not. (Has anyone else done this? If so what were your results?)
Supervisor submitted a ticket to the engineers and said he would contact me tomorrow. He sent me an email with his contact information.
    Part of the email:
    Armand,
Here is my contact information. My direct line is listed at the bottom of this message. You may call or email me regarding this issue. I have passed this on to our engineering and will follow up with you on their response.
    Sincerely,

I reset the network settings and reception has been fine since yesterday.

  • How do you know the best iMac display size

how do you know the best iMac display size
Only on them fits in the screen window and that makes the font so tiny.  The others are too wide or too tall.  I usually view at 150 - 200% for vision issues.

You say it's better to do the Media Browser?  I'm fairly new to movie, dvd and garage band.  How would I go about using the Media Browser instead of straight to iDVD?
Select Your project - go up to Share - Share to Media Browser and as Large (Not HD)
In iDVD select a nice theme - click on Media button - click on Movie - Select Your movie.
NOW - Save as a DiskImage - and test this before burning DVDs - if this Plays OK then either burn the Image by using Disk Util tool (and set down burn-speed to x4) - or burn via iDVD (will take more time)
I want to keep as much quality as I can.
Then don't use iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 - as they all discard every second line resulting in less quality on the DVD. I use iMovie HD6 or FinalCut any version.
Also...I tried to split my project in iMovie...but couldn't find a way.  I wound up just making a copy and then deleting out a handful of scenes from the copy...I still have the original at 4:12hrs.  Is there a way in iMovie to split a project?
I would make a copy and cut away a bit from the end - calling this Part 1 and from start of the other copy Part 2.
OR - there are other programs that can squees in more to a DVD e.g. Roxio Toast™ - BUT this has two cons.
    • It costs - to me it was well spent mony as it can so much more e.g. back engineer a DVD to an editable form
    • Squeesing in more on a DVD - costs in QUALITY - and as You want as much as it can be - then 90 minuts portions encoded with Pro-Quality encoding and full quality interlasced material from a video-editor that delivers this is the way to get 100% of what DVDs can do.
DVD is as standard only SD-Video - HD not possibly. Then You need Blu-Ray. (also Roxio Toast™)

Quit the game and restart the iPad.
To quit the game - Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
If that doesn't work try this.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • Public request to Apple about the WiFi mess

As a faithful Apple user I am deeply disappointed by the lack of response by Apple about the wifi problems many users (including myself) are experiencing. What makes the whole issue worse is the lack of a public statement by the company over this mess: calling the support doesn't take us anywhere as we are treated like idiots who can't use the device - "Are you sure your router is working properly?" - "Try with another wifi" - ""Have you tried to reinstall the Os"....
It's time Apple publicly acknowledges the problem and offer some sort of solution as more and more users (including myself) are swiftly thinking about switching to a more reliable company. It's very sad to witness the downfall of a good company like Apple who is basically refusing to acknowledge this problem. Leaving things in the dark won't help the reputation of the company, quite the opposite!
If it is not a hardware issue, as it maya well be, let us downgrade to a previous version of the iOS and check if it works.
I am on the verge of loosing my patience and frustration is building up too quickly. I have strong doubts I will be buying Apple's products in the future.

WiFi problems have been around as long as there have been WiFi devices on all hardware. Go to support sites for any mobile device and you will see WiFi issues so buying other products may not solve your issue.
It may indeed be a hardware issue that became evident on your iPhone during the upgrade. Have you had your iPhone checked?
Apple rarely announces what they are doing with issues like this. With WiFi they might as well issue a blanket statement that they are constantly working on it (and they are). Go here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html and enter detailed information about your issues and have your phone checked out.

  • Windows 7 64 bit on iMac display problems and instability

I received my iMac 27" quad core with 8 gig ram & 2 x 1 TB hard drives last Friday. I'm using Boot Camp to run windows 7 64 bit on maximum 2560 x 1440 screen resolution.
I get intermittent but often display problems in windows 7. I get areas of the screen covered in little yellow dots or blue squares (never red artefacts.) This will happen at random areas of the screen, inside an open window, around borders of windows and so on. Most often the screen will go black and come back with a message in the bottom right corner of the screen saying 'Display driver has stopped responding and has recovered' with the sub message saying 'display driver ATI radeon family stopped....etc'. Sometimes I lose the screen wallpaper. Once I've had the system just shut down, once I've had Photoshop seize up and I had to do a cold reboot. Could this be an overheating problem or resolution too high problem or driver problem? Windows 7 tells me my drivers are up to date. I tried installing the drivers for the card from ATI's website which made no difference
The reason I bought a Mac is because it's the only effective way to code for the Mac family of OS's in XCode. The reason I didn't just attach a miniMac to my PC monitor was because there's rather a lot of advertising by Apple about the fact that you can use a Mac with a PC OS via Apple's own Boot Camp. Now I have a lot of Windows software (some of which is not available for the Mac or requires buying again) sitting on an unstable system. Any ideas would be much appreciated...

Sorry, that thread got moved for edit and as a user tip... which I didn't want and won't be doing....
    Here is the post:
A tip and workaround for how to get ATI mobility/laptop drivers so that Windows no longer thinks the ATI is a desktop card:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11286987
    Summary (my own edit steps):
    1. Install Boot Camp 3.0 and upgrade to 3.1
    2. Uninstall graphic drivers and run Driver Sweeper
    http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/
    instead of:
removing the crashing driver by going into windows 7 setup via its install cd and deleting the ati driver manaully
    3. Install ATI Mobility (link)
    4. Uninstall ATI (Programs control panel?) Device Manager (rollback; uninstall?)
    5. Device Nanager: update driver and BROWSE BACK to 8.681 (the original apple driver that was causing freezes and purple artifacts) - navigate to /Apple/Drivers/ATI
(Apple uses) a 4850 card in the iMac, its modified a bit for apple. Enough that desktop drivers don't work, and modded-for-laptop desktop drivers don't work either.
Now the upshot of using modified drivers is that it FORCES the catalyst control panel to be installed, meaning you get a few more options to mess around with the card.
I couldn't use the original apple drive, it locks up, the newer one had banding, the newer radeon drivers direct form ATI wouldn't work until they were modded and then they cause black screens.
SO the solution, as obscure as it was, was to download ACTUAL mobility Radeon drivers - version 10.3 still, but made for laptops.
    http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx
THESE drivers I was able to install - and here is where things changed.
THIS driver changed they way windows saw the video card in device manager.
As I mentioned before, its NOT a desktop card, its a modified laptop card, but installing mac drivers makes windows THINK its a full desktop card, and running the original 8.681 driver crashed it.
Once installed 10.3 LAPTOP driver it now appeared in device manager as a MOBILITY card.
    +These Steps "should" work:+
    delete ATI driver manually
reinstall apple driver after that and see if that works,
    otherwise try the steps above
(mod drivers, remove via windows recovery off setup disk, install laptop drivers, reinstall apple driver over it)

  • Contacted by Apple for potential MBP retina display problem

I'm using MBP retina for exactly two weeks (received 7/27).
I was unable to get a call, but recieved a voice message from Apple regarding possible MPB retina display problem.
Is there anyone who got this call from Apple?
I dont' feel any problem on display, but wondering what could be problems.
    Thanks.

"...but recieved a voice message from Apple regarding possible MPB retina display problem."
Could you be more detailed about the message? Apple doesn't usually do that.

  • So, what's the bottom line about these new iMac displays?

My MBP needs repair again, and while waiting for it to be picked up by Apple, fixed and returned I've revived my even older PBG4, running really slowly off an external USB 1 HD.
Since my work depends on using my Mac daily, I was thinking of buying a new computer and using my MBP for a backup.
The prices on the 21.5" and 27" iMacs are good. And they look beautiful when I saw them at Yodobashi Camera in Akihabara. A new 15" or 17" (like I have now) MBP is really too expensive for me right now.
I have had very bad luck with Mac purchases. Almost every one I've ever bought has needed repair - usually as soon as I brought it home. And now I'm reading all these messages about the display problems. Also, the 27" versions seem to have a 2 week delay on orders (though the 21.5" ones are available now.)
If my purpose is to quickly get an affordable Mac this week so I don't have to labor through using this old PBG4 while my MBP is out, are the iMacs ok? Or are the display problems almost universal?
It's sometimes hard to tell since these forums are, after all, a place where people come to discuss problems!
    Any opinions?
    Thanks,
    doug

Thanks for all your replies, people. And hello to you, kguy!
I never even read about broken pixels on the iSight camera. Something else to worry about!
There are some things that bother me greatly about my display and I will argue to the ends of the earth to get an exchange if they happen. The main thing for me is broken pixels. On my MacBook Pro (late 2006) I had 1 bad pixel and it was driving me to distraction and I argued until they exchanged it.
On the other hand, at the same time, LOTS of people were posting about "uneven illumination" problems with their MBP screens and posting lots of photos and there were a lot of threads about it. I suppose if I looked hard enough, after seeing what they were talking about, I could probably see something similar in my MBP screen, but it honestly never bothered me.
But broken pixels truly drive me to distraction.
I haven't seen this "yellowing" thing at any of the floor models at Yodobashi Camera. But it could be because of the comment in this thread about having to look at the display at a severe angle to see.
I've also experienced what kguy has experienced about support in Japan. There is a general reluctance to admit that there is a problem and they will insist that things are "within acceptable range" (to whom?), but then they find some other excuse to actually go ahead and do the repair. It's like they don't want to set a precedent for other people, but they want to resolve the issue and not leave an unhappy customer. If all else fails with Apple Japan you can nicely say, "OK. Thanks. I guess my next step is to talk with the consumer affairs agency." At that point they inevitably say, "Please hold a moment" and come back with a resolution to your problem.
I've had problems, usually out of the box, with every single Mac I have ever purchased except one - my iMac G5 (long since sold at an auction site). Not a broken pixel, not a single problem. I loved that machine, except was upset that it was basically obsoleted 3 weeks after I bought it when they came out with the Intel versions!
Anyway, I might go over to the store and see if I can see this "yellowing" problem people are talking about. Like I said, I didn't notice it before.

  • This isn't a question but rather a warning to anyone using the new OS for iphone 4.  The imessage uses up your data plan like crazy.  I called Apple about it and they said no it's not doing it.  I called AT

The new OS is burning through my data plan like crazy and here's why.  Imessage uses your data plan and not your texting plan.  So every time you send a text message to someone with an iphone it uses imessage and it uses your data, not your text plan.  I couldn't figure out why I was burning through so much of my data plan so quickly.  I called Apple and they said, no it's not the data plan doing it.  I called AT&T and they said, yes, the imessage uses data instead of your texting plan if you are texting to another iphone.  Also, the new OS runs your apps all the time, even when you aren't using them.  So if you are not near wifi your apps are running and burning your data plan.  The AT&T guy took me through the steps to turn off the apps.  You can still use them but they won't be running constantly.  Seriously Apple, you should let people know this.  It does say it in the fine print on the website "data rates may apply" under imessage but most people will never read this.  So my data plan started on October 10th and it's already at 175 megabytes and I only have a 200 megabyte plan.  I've never used more than 50 to 75 megabytes in a month.  Apple get it together and be honest with people and tell them.  Quit denying the problem.  Most people have probably not even discovered this yet.  Wait till you get your bill.

    kimmie92592 wrote:
It's not really common knowledge because I've talked to several people today and none of them knew about it.  Also, when I called Apple they said no the new OS is not using data.  Totally wrong answer.  You'd think they'd know about it and at least tell people.  The people who are going to be hit by this are people like me with the 200mb plans.  I just think it's best to spread the word so people can know what's happening.  I still don't know how I went through so much data in such a short period of time.  It's not happening anymore though, not since I fixed everything up last night.
If you are using a free wifi connection, there are no data charges with iMessage.  But in an area where you did NOT have a wifi connection, of course it used 3G and of course you got charged for it (or had it count against your plan limits).
I'll ask again - without a wifi connection, just what did you think was happening?  How did you think your iPhone was able to magically send a message WITHOUT using any data connection?  A little bit of rational thought would have made you realize that there was no way, over a 3G connection (which is a service provided by your cellular service provider, NOT Apple), that you can send or receive ANYTHING without your service provider's plan picking it up.
Nothing abut iMessage has ever hinted that it can, in any way, bypass your service provider when NOT using a wifi connection.

  • Is the 27" iMac display exactly the same as the 27" ACD?

I'm looking at updating my existing set up and want to know whether the above displays are exactly the same. From memory the ACD's were usually of a better quality compared to the iMac displays. Have they achieved parity now?  Where will I find full specifications as I can't find them for the iMac - only that they are ips displays, and the resolution and speaker wattage.
    Thanks guys.

Read the specifications on each (available on Apple's site) and you will have all the information you need.
    This displays's specifications are at:

  • Does Apple do anything now about the 5th Gen Audio problem?

My 30gig has worked wonderfully up until 2 weeks ago. Suddenly no sound output. If I squeeze the lower right side near the wheel I will get a short burst of the song. I am not a daily user of it as I'm always nervous about hurting it,so I've maybe used it as much in the last 4 years as some people do in 6 months. I've been using it on car trips so had my cable to hook it to the car radio.
I decided to start walking 2 weeks ago and couldn't find my headphones so I borrowed my 1o yr old daughters. No sound came out but I figured it was just because she had damaged her headphones. I finally went and bought myself a new set and headed out to walk last night, nothing.
I have read a few sites mentioning this problem back to 2007 and many people were able to get a free, out of warranty replacement. But I'm not seeing anyone have luck with it in the last 6 months.
To be 100% honest I had never wanted an Apple product but my husband, parents and brother went together to get this for me. I had fallen in love with it and had started putting money away to get my girls Touches for christmas but have changed my mind on that. If mine breaks sitting on my dresser than what will happen to theirs?!

4 years is actually pretty good compared to what most get, which is usually 2 - 3 years. These things are not designed to last forever and different components have a tendency to burn out over time. That's the case which just about anything you purchase, especially when its something with moving parts.
You can try calling Apple support anyways and presenting your case, but they are under no obligation to replace it since it's well out of warranty.
    Sorry.

  • What is Apple doing about the "Unable to download" problems?

So, forgive me if these questions have been asked before. But I am new to Apple, just bought an iPhone about 2 months ago. I love my iPhone, but once you start getting into the world of the App store is where the problems seem to start flooding in. Specifically with the downloading and updating portion. Downloading is sometimes a breeze and sometimes a pain as is updating. Some days I have no problems downloading or updating apps. Other days I get error messages such as "unable to download" with an option of "done" or "retry."
The "done" option is worthless because if you select it, the app is still unselectable and will stay that way for days and the only way around it is to delete the app and reinstall if you can even reinstall it without having problems.
The "retry" option is also worthless because as soon as you select that option, not even a second later will the message "unable to download" pop up again.
Some days I get the error message that says something along the lines of unable to download without a wifi connection. That confuses me because there are plenty of times when I have downloaded apps without a wifi connection. So why is it that sometimes I need a wifi connection and other times I dont need it. Second, I am connected to a wifi connection right now and my app still wont update.
I dont know about you, but I sure as **** dont like seeing that red number 1 on my app store every day, but with the problems of updating apps sometimes im forced to just stare at it every time I unlock my phone.
So what is Apple doing about these problems?? Because I've seen alot of threads on this discussion board but they all seem to have the same answers, "turn off the phone then turn it back on" "download over a wifi connection" "delete the app and re install"

Have you called Apple tech support or visited an Apple Store to ask for assistance with the problem? If not, then you really haven't even given Apple the opportunity to assist you with this problem. This is not happening to every iPod touch by any means, so it's most likely an issue with your particular unit. Try the usual steps: restart, reset, restore.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
If that doesn't help, call Apple support or take the iPod to an Apple Store.
    Regards.

  • Question about the new iMac

Please Note: I am extremely sorry if this is placed in the wrong location. It says to post here if it doesn't fit the other categories.
Now I asked before about the Mac Mini, the features and etc... Well since I saw the August keynote and the new iMovie you guys presented, it made me want to start making the Mac as my new computer. The thing is, I am short on cash and have a few question between the First and Second versions.
    1. My new computer will probably have to last 5-7 years, and I need to know, will the cheapest iMac be able to actually go that far? I mean I have read how some mac's that were purchased about that time still run perfectly good today.
    2. Since Leopard will have bootcamp fully integrated and Windows can run at native speed, Will games like WoW (of course this is only an example, I know they have a mac version) run really good on it?
    3. Say I buy my Mac in a retailer such as Best Buy, how will I go about a Hard Drive upgrade? I saw you can upgrade the memory, but they mentioned nothing as to a Hard Drive upgrade.
    4. If I want to actually customize my mac (because if theres no way to upgrade in question 3...) can I do it by going to a Apple Store or do I have to order online?
    5. Would 1 GB of ram be good or will I have to upgrade later to 2 GB to run good?
    6. So in the longer run, would buying the 2.4 GHz Mac be better for a 5-7 year term or will the 2.0 GHz version do just as fine. (Please keep in mind that cash is hard to get... It might be until March until I purchase... This will give me an idea.)
I just want to make a good decision when buying a Mac and get rid of this trouble maker I have now.. Of course going with a Mac is already a good decision.
    Thanks and waits for reply.

    Hello darkpontiac
My you have lots of questions, so I'll cover as many as I can.
This is as good a place as any to ask about the iMac's.
Look at this link and you will see the you can have an iMac and make payments.
    "The Apple Store"
    1. I would buy the best from the upper end and Apple Care to get the longest life from it.
    2. I don't run WoW, but others have reported that it runs fine even on the Early Core Duo Intel iMac's.
    3. You can order a larger HD from Apple, look dow at "Configure-to-order options" in this link.
    Intel iMac Spec's
    4. Yes see #3 then up grade the ram yourself up to 4GB on the new models.
    5. 2 GB of ram is great for most users, the current is shipped with 1GB and you can upgrade in steps of 2, 3 and 4 GB later if you wish.
    6. Yes
Sorry it took me so long to respond, but I'm printing out some vacation photo's from iPhoto for the wife, jumping to e-mail back and forth with daughter, downloading some new CD's I just bought and replying to your post all at the same time on this 20 month old Early Core Duo with 2GB of ram. It's not having any trouble at all playing my loud classic rock with iTunes, but I'm working like h...!
