I can hear callers but they can't hear me;

This just started happening.
Hadn't  updated phone or anything.
Tried updating after it started to no avail.

I would backup the device in iTunes. Then attempt a Restore, followed by setting the iPhone up as a new device. Make sure you rename your iPhone something different as to not overwrite the existing backup you made. Doing this will not bring any of your information back onto the device, but will give you the opportunity to test the device with a new operating system installed on it. If the problem persist after the restore (set up as a new device) then the problem lies in the hardware. If the problem does not persist, then you will need to avoid restoring the device from your backup, as the problem lies in a corrupted operating system. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Hope this helps

the mute button is a switch you need to flip, not touch. if you look at it and see color, its on.

Usually issues that have to do with Call audio, dropped calls etc, need to have the SIM Card/service ruled out first.
Take the SIM card out of your phone and put it in another to see if issue persists. If it does then its something with your location/service and you need to contact your service provider.
If it does not persist in the other phone then you will want to do a reset and then a restore if issue persists.

Also a simple phone restart will fix 9/10 issues like that.

First of all,  make sure that your iPhone as the most recent iOS available. Check in "Settings>General>Software Update".
One other problem could be your microphone. Does it work for anything else other than a call?

  • When I connect via face time with my friend's ipad or iphone we can see each other and I can hear them but they can't hear me.  HELP!

When I connect from my mac via facetime with my friend's iphone or ipad we can see each other and I can hear them but they can't hear me.  The mute is not applied, and the microphone seems to work with other applications.  Help!

I have same issue in my MB Air with Snow Leopard.   It used to work fine but one day I found that the mic mute was locked on.   I went to System and ensured mic was working by seeing the bars move.   I went to Facetime > Video drop down and it is all greyed out so not active and the mic symbol in Facetime pane has a line through it (muted) and is dead.    I have tried everythinng to UNmute the mic.   Two way video is fine and I can hear the other party perfectly.    Seems like this happened about the time of a Snow Leopard update but may be wrong.    Issue is several months old and, well, getting old!    I love Facetime with my grandkids etc. who all use Apple stuff.    There HAS to be a way to reactivate the mic in my MB Air.    Could someone please help??

Was the device actually unlocked by Verizon?
Just FYI, diesel, per an agreement between Verizon and the FCC which allowed Verizon to buy additional spectrum, all Verizon-model iPhone 5, 5C and 5S models are already unlocked.

  • 3/27/14 someone calls me and i cant hear them but they can hear me

3/27/14 Someone calls me and I cant hear them but they can hear me this is happing to my iphone 4s iphone 5 and iphone 5s i power off all devices and turn them back on and they still doing the same thing .... when i call someone it works like normal.... it only happens when they try to call me ???

This happened to me.  The chances are, that your headphone socket has some fluff stuck inside it.
If you get your SIM card removal tool, or something similarly pointy in shape, very very gently dig out the fluff and clag inside your headphone socket.  You won't be able to see anything of course because it's so far up.  After removing some fluff, I also put the nozzle of the vacuum cleaner over the hole, using my hands ot create a bit of a seal, and afterwards my phone worked normally again.
While you're doing it, you may also want to remove any fluff from your charging socket too.
NB - do be careful though, because you don't want to cause any damage up there, but as long as you don't go "attacking" it, you should be fine.

Calls have been dropping out mid-call (after initially working) with full reception since upgrading my iPhone 4 to iOS5 (can hear them but they can't hear me). The call initially works but then after a minute or so, they stop hearing me, even though I can hear them. Sometimes it goes the other way and I can't hear them.
Please advise how to remedy ASAP.

PS: I have had full reception bars when this has occured on a 3G network in Sydney, Australia (3 Mobile).

  • New 4s connects with bluetooth in my Lexus, but I have intermittent problems with calls.  I can hear them, but they can't hear me.  Never did this with 3gs.  Anyone else have this problem?

New 4s connected to my Lexus bluetooth.  Having intermittent problem with calls.  I can hear them, but they can't hear me.  Never a problem with 3gs phone.  Anyone else having this problem?

I ended up getting a new phone, straight through Apple.  I called their technical support and went through all he basics again and they decided to replace it.  Was a pretty quick process - after defaulting and resetting the whole phone (about 2 hours),  I called them back to inform that there was no change, so they set up the order.
I had to give my CC# so they could hold a charge on it (in case I didn't send my old phone bach, which they sent me a pre-posted package to send it in anyway).  Had a brand new iPhone 4S in my hands in 4 days, which was pretty decent.  I had uploaded everything previously to iCloud, so setting up the new phone was a snap.
Only thing I really didn't like was they charged me almost 30 bucks for shipping or processing, or something.  Not so sure that should have been my responsibility after spending so much on a brand new product, only to have to have it warrantied after, like, a month.

  • I can hear them but they can't hear me! -- Detailed

Hey. My iPhone has been acting up lately. About 2 months ago Apple replaced my almost-1-year-old iPhone 4 because the circle button wasn't responding. So, now I have a new iPhone 4. I have a Speck case on it and with my old phone had no problems with this. Almost every time I have been making or receiving a call, I would be able to hear the person but they couldn't hear me. Sometimes it would happen right away and other times it would start acting up in the middle of a call. Other times, it would work normally. I do not use any bluetooth devices but I do have a screen protecter on the front screen of my iPhone only. I have checked the speakers on my iPhone and it doesn't look like they are blocked by anything at all. This doesn't happen when I facetime somebody. Could it be because I might have dropped my phone? I have had way worse drops with my old iPhone within the first week I got it and had no problems with it untill about the 9th or 10th month I had it. Again it was just the button not working not the speakers. My phone has no cracks or defects at all. My parents both have iPhones and do not experience this problem. HELP!!!

Ok I tried that and it was fine. I am kind of reluctant to call at&t. What can they do about it?
    Thanks!

im having trouble hearing people when they call

    Hey kswannus,
I found a document that mentions symptoms similar to what you're experiencing - having a hard time hearing and being heard. I'd follow the troubleshooting steps within and see if that resolves the issue:
