I can no longer hold down the Safari icon on the dock and open a new window

I noticed after installing Snow Leopard that I am unable to hold down the icon for Safari on my dock and choose the option to open a new window. I have had to revert to (Command-Tabbing) through my open applications to get to Safari, then (Command-N).
I found it much more convenient to do it the other way. Am I missing something, or is this something that has been removed with the new Snow Leopard operating system?
Please help. Thanks!

Thank you. What a pain though. Why would they make it a separate command now. It would be so easy to have kept it in the pop-up that shows when you hold the cursor down on it.

  • Can the "Finder" icon be set to always open a new window?

Can the "Finder" icon (on the dock) be set to simply open a new window every time when clicked? Instead of always selecting the dialog "new finder window" under "File" ? Or having to right clicking on the FINDER dock icon, then selecting "new finder window".
I'd like to simply click on the finder icon and have a new window just open every time.
Same with Safair. Simply click on the "Safari" dock icon, and a new blank safari window would open, instead of selecting "new window" under safari "File" menu.
I don't know if this can be set by setting a command via terminal, or ?
There are no options under preferences to do this.
Usually there is some "command line" done within the terminal app, to tweek most default settings, like what I want to do...?

The easiest way to open new windows in Finder, Safari and just about any other program in Mac OS X is to use the keyboard shortcut, 'Command' + 'n'

  • Why when I click the Safari icon in my dock to open Safari it will not open onto my home page?

After downloading the new version of Safari it no longer gives the option to open Safari with your home page. The only options are to open Safari with a blank page or the last page you viewed.
In addition, when Im using Safari and I press Command+N to open a new page I would like that page to be the same as the page I was originally on. Example: If I am on Amazon.com and I press Command+N I would like a new page to open ALSO on Amazon.com

Carolyn thank you for your response,
I know how to set my home page what I am trying to do is make it so when I launch Safari it will OPEN on my home page.
In "Safari / Preferences / Apple opens with" the ONLY options are:
    "A new window"
    or
    "All windows from last session"
How can I make it my "Home Page"?
In addition, when Im using Safari and I press Command+N to open a new page I would like that page to be the same as the page I was originally on NOT my home page.

Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled NO
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered. You can then quit Terminal. Log out or restart the computer.

If you can't get dragging to work, just click on Safari from your Applications folder, and it should appear in the dock. Then you can right-click on the icon and PIN it permanently there.

Safari comes with the Apple website pre-defined, so if you want to use it as the homepage for Safari, open Safari menu > Preferences > General, and type "http://www.apple.com" (without quotes) on the homepage box. Then, close the Preferences window and Safari will be set up with this page

Well, then isn't there some way to induce Firefox to give Windows parameters that make it open the fershlugginer window in the *same* position, instead of an offset position?

    '''''"a new FF iteration"'''''
No such thing. All Firefox windows and tabs run in a single '''firefox.exe''' process, unlike IE which has a separate process for each window, or Chrome which opens a new process for each tab.
As far as the Firefox SafeMode, you can't open it when Firefox is running ''(unless you open a separate Profile purposely)'', if you try all you will get is another window in the "regular mode".
You're not going to be able to discover the cause of your problem if you're unwilling to follow established troubleshooting procedures, regardless of how intermittent the fault occurs. I wouldn't be surprised of you have an add-on installed which is causing that problem.
Another course of action would be to create a new Profile, which is like starting from scratch with a completely new Firefox installation. <br />

  • Finder is not working properly mac osx 10.7.4 it no longer launches a new window when I click the finder icon - I have to right click and open a new window

    Hi
Just recently Finder has stopped behaving as it normally would. Clicking the icon doesn't seem to launch the finder window. I have to right click the finder icon and then click New Finder Window. Sometimes there is no response for sometime and then finally it does open a window. If I click finder when a wondow is open it does not shift focus to finder anymore. I am sure this did not use to be the case?
PS. not sure if this is how to put things on the forum as haven't used them before!
    Julian

Click on the spotlight icon in the top right of your screen (looks like a magnifying glass), type
    Terminal
    and press 'return'.
In the window that opens up, paste or type this exactly into the window
    killall Finder; killall Dock
(that's case sensitive) and press 'return'.
You'll notice the Dock disappear for a second or two then return, as do any open Finder windows.
Test using Finder as normal. Same problem?

  • Safari 5.1.1 won't open a new window

After performing a disk warrior cleanup on my iMac with Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Safari would continually crash while trying to open. In the interim I installed the new Adobe flash player and Safari would then boot up and I thought my problems were solved. But apparently Safari is only partially functional now. If I close the window I can't open a new window I have to reboot Safari. It also seems to hang a lot when I am browsing. I even tried reinstalling Safari 5.1 and that didn't help. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

  • Firefox opens the old browsing window (previous session) every time i try and open a new window, how do I change this back?

Every time I go to open a new window, the old one will come up instead. For a while it was working fine, then I kept needing the old window and would use the 'restore previous session' feature to access this. However, even after I didn't need it anymore (and without me selecting the feature, it would still open the previous session.

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the files sessionstore.js [2] and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.<br />
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

  • My iPhone 4S can no longer hold a charge, had battery replaced once before and is only 2 years old

I've had my iPhone 4S for two years and I still have one more year in my contract.
The first month I had my phone I had similar battery issues where the phone was able to hold a charge over 3 hours. I never have wifi or Bluetooth on, I do not even have internet connection for Safari on. I tested charging it up to %100 and not touch it and after 2 hours it dies.
I would love to get a new iPhone 5c but then I would need to pay off the rest my contract and purchase the new phone and get a new contract. I do not have a warranty for my phone so would taking it to the Apple store and having them replace my battery be worth it? And would I have to pay for them to fix the battery again? Would they give me a replacement phone as well?

Who replaced the battery the first time? If it was anyone other than Apple, your phone is unsupportable. Apple won't touch it either in or out of warranty.

  • When I click in the safari icon in my iPhone it opens but stays still. Does anybody knows what happened??

Since the beginning of December my safari doesn't work. And when I try to open safari at settings the iPhone stops.

    Hi Ingrid.emi,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  You can try closing the Safari app and restarting/resetting your iPhone to see if that helps:

  • HT201209 The buy button in itunes does not open  a new window and allow me to buy a purchase

    Hello
We are having problems with iTunes. We have redeemed a voucher which does appear £25 but we can not Buy a purchase. The new window does not open like it used to.
We can not download the free singles either.
This has been happening for 2 weeks.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

Middle-click or click the scroll-wheel on a hyperlink has always opened a '''new Tab'''. Any chance you had an add-on that changed that action, and now that add-on is disabled or incompatible?

  • When I have minimized additional windows and open another new window, the previously minimized windows show up underneath the new one, and I have to minimize them all again. This is quite annoying, how do you make it stop?

This has only been happening since upgrading to Firefox 4.0.

This issue can be caused by the ASK.com Toolbar.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
