I Can No Longer Install Palm Desktop on a Reformatted Computer!

Since I reformatted my computer and patched it all the way back up, I can no longer install the Palm Desktop Software.  I put the disc in and it hangs at the installation dialogue box and slows my entire computer down.  So I pull up the task manager and my CPU is spiked at 100%, and iDriver.exe is the process hogging the CPU while eating hundreds of megs of memory.  Not only that but there are multiple instances of iDriver.exe right behind it with one instance of iDriverT.exe.  Also there are multiple msiexec.exe instances as well.  Once I kill the first instance of iDriver.exe the Palm Desktop installation stops.  I even downloaded the latest verizon version from this site and I'm having the same problem.
Any solutions?

Error - 1607: Unable to Install InstallShield Scripting Run Time
Update to the Latest InstallShield Installation Engines
http://knowledge.macrovision.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=Q108322&sliceId=1
When running into installation issues, it is always recommended that you use the latest InstallShield installation engines. This article contains steps on how to download and install the latest InstallShield engines for the installation version you are trying to install.
What to do?
Follow the Troubleshooting steps below:
Determine if the installation is compressed or uncompressed.
Launch Windows Explorer by pressing the Windows key + E or select Start > Run and type explorer.
Browse to the location of the installation files. For example, if the installation is on a CD, browse to the CD-ROM drive.
Search for the installation file. The typical names for installation files are setup.exe, update.exe, installer.exe, etc.
If the installation file is the only file in the directory (a single installation file), continue with the remaining suggestions in Step 1. Otherwise, if there are other files in the same directory as the installation file, continue to Step 2.
When a single installation file is run, it uncompresses the installation files into a temporary location (usually the Temp directory). Use these steps to find the installation in the temporary location:
Start the single installation file, but do not continue or cancel the installation dialogs.
Browse to the Temp directory. For further information on how to find the Temp directory, see Clean the Temp Directory.
Search for the installation file. The typical names for installation files are setup.exe, update.exe, installer.exe, etc. The uncompressed installation file should contain other files in the same directory. Continue with step 2.
Right-click on the installation file that you are trying to install and select Properties.
In the Properties dialog, click on the Version tab.
Look at the File Version field to determine the version number of the InstallShield engine you need. Follow the instructions for your version. If you started the installation in Step 1d, cancel it.
If the file version number is 2.0x or less:
Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\engine from the machine.

    Hello.
I have the latest updates for Mac OS X 10.5.8 on a 3.5 years old 15" MacBook Pro. I also installed Palm Desktop v4.2.1 rev. D on it and it worked (saw all the data in its Palm Desktop). I am trying to get Apple's iSync to work with this old Palm Treo 680 device, but it doesn't see the installed Palm softwares: http://i.imgur.com/ovy8d.png ... What's wrong?

And finally the following message popped up:
"The selected Port COM1 is not available at this time. Hot Sync manager will open the port whwn it becomes avaialble."
Any idea what I can do to get this progarm to load on my new computer?

Try to "clean" uninstall PD and re-install 6.2. 6.2 has data loss issues, FYI. You can export the data to backup and if the data is lost, import the data to recover.
You should first make a copy of your data to have just in case something
happens. You can find your data files by going to Start --> Documents -->
Palm OS Desktop. Highlight your Palm Desktop username and right click and
copy. Then go to your PC desktop right click on a blank spot and select paste.
If this is the first time you are installing Palm desktop and encountering a problem, skip the previous step.
Now you want to uninstall Palm Desktop and remove everything that has to do
with Palm Desktop from your computer.
Go to the following locations on the PC and delete the folders listed below.
    C:\Program Files\Palm or Palm One
    C:\Users\[Vista Login Name]\appdata\local\virtualstore\Program Files\Palm or
    PalmOne
    C:\Users\[Vista Login Name]\appdata
*Note you may need to view hidden folders to get to appdata. To do that go
into your control panel and open folder options. Go to view tab and uncheck
    hide hidden files.
Once this is done you will need to delete some registry keys from your PC Operating System.
Word of warning, going here and deleting the wrong thing can cause your PC
from starting up, crashing and deletion of programs and data. If you feel
you are unsure of yourself, see if you have a friend that can help you or a
PC technician that you can pay to help you. This procedure will show them everything they need to delete. To make sure we have a good copy of the current registry, we need to do a backup of the Registry.
Go to start on the PC, in the search field type "regedit.exe" without quotes.
Highlight COMPUTER, go to File --> Export. Should pop up with a Save As box.
Current location is fine, should be in My Documents or save to a location you will remember. In the file name on the bottom type "backup[todaysdate]" i.e. backup07072008. Next, the hard part.
The easiest way to make sure your working with the correct key, highlight the key i.e. palm quick install, and press delete on your keyboard. It will ask you, are you sure. Say yes. Do the same thing for all keys below.
If you make a mistake, stop what you are doing. And call a PC technician.
BUT do not turn off your computer.
The reg keys are as follows (Note: some of theses reg keys will not be here
but if they are delete them)
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\Palm Quick Install
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\PalmOne File Transfer
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\Pilot Desktop
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Palm
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Palm, Inc.
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PalmDesktopAutorun
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\palmOne
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PalmSource
    * HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\PalmSource or anything else that says palm
    Next reboot your computer.
Then reinstall your Palm desktop from the CD and do a hotsync. If it asks
you for a username, enter the name that is on your device in the upper right corner of the hotsync screen.
The best way to preserve your data is to export the data in each category in Palm Desktop to a separate folder on your PC.
Create a new folder on your PC somewhere that is convenient. Name it something like Palm Desktop Data. Click on the link below and follow the instructions on that page for the export procedure.
    http://kb.hpwebos.com/wps/portal/kb2/common/article/28734_en.html
Make sure you select all for the range in the export window.
With the data saved in the folder you created, make a copy of that folder and save to a flash drive, cd-rw or external hard drive.
Anytime you make a change in Palm Desktop, export the data that was changed to that folder and save again to the external media.
With this process you can always import the data back into Palm Desktop anytime you have a problem with the data in Palm Desktop or if your computer/hard drive/device crashes.
For reference purposes, click on the following link for the support page for your device on the kb.hpwebos.com webpage.

  • Installing Palm Desktop & Missing Sync to Mac-Questions

Here are the steps from the Mark/Space webpage for install Palm Desktop (PD) and Missing Sync (MS) to my new Mac (I just converted from PC 4 days ago):
"Note: In order for the Missing Sync to work properly with Palm Desktop, Palm Desktop must be installed PRIOR to installing Missing Sync for Palm OS.
    1) Install Palm Desktop 4.2.X
To download Palm Desktop 4.2.X, please go to: http://www.palm.com/us/support/macintosh/mac_desktop.html
    2) Install Missing Sync for Palm OS Version 5.1.X or higher
    3) If you have previously synchronized with Palm Desktop, your user name will be automatically added to the list of handhelds.
    4) Configure the Palm Desktop conduits and make certain that other PIM conduits, such as Mark/Space Conduits for Contacts, Events and Tasks are not enabled."
I have about 40 3rd party apps on my Treo, few of which have a desktop component (conduit): Adobe, Avantgo, DocsToGo, Easy Schedule (United Airlines), eReader, MobiPocket, WorldMate, Vindigo and Zagat. I believe that all except for MobiPocket will work with Mac.
However, what do I do during the first sync, when I want to get my PIMs syncing and PIM data migrating from my Treo 680 the the PD on the Mac? I assume that this might work:
    1. When do I delete all Treo 680 3rd party apps, before I sync the PIMs or does it matter as long as I turn off the 3rd party conduits?
    2. Only sync the PIMs first until I see that they are working. Do this with conduit set to handheld overwrites desktop.
    3. Get Mac-compatible apps from the makers, install them on the Mac and, using MS, sync and install them on my Treo. This entails correctly setting the conduits and following MS's instructions when the process is a little tricky (ie, Vindigo, Avantgo). I don't want to update any of these apps via wireless so I'm hoping that Missing Sync can do the syncing job for all of them.
Zagat isn't on their supported apps list but Zagat does indicate that it works with Mac. I don't know what that means.
Does anyone have any comments. Thanks.

Since Palm Desktop and Missing Sync are not Apple products you'd probably be better off posting your question on the Missing Sync forums:

  • Can't Open New Palm Desktop On My PC

I downloaded the new update for the Palm Desktop for Vista users. It worked fine since I downloaded it, except for a WI-FI problem that I'm still trying to correct. Just yesterday, I cannot open Palm Desktop. When I try to open it on my PC, I get the following message, "Palm Desktop by Access  application has stopped working". This happened after I installed some music from my PC to my T/X. I don't think I did anything else. I can still Hotsync, I just can't open Palm Desktop. I thought of re-installing Pal Desktop, I even down loaded the ZIP installation file, but I thought better and will wait to see if anyone has any advice.

I solved my own problem. Not sure exactly which step did it, but it worked. By reading all of the Help Forums along with the Windows Vista Problem Report and Solutions, I was able to determine that it was the date book causing the Palm Desktop to not open. So I followed what I read in the Help Forums for several other problems. That is, in my PC, I went to documents/Palm OS Desktop/(my device name) and there, I renamed the backup and the datebook. I then deleted the entire Palm Desktop from my computer. Then I re-installed Palm Desktop by Access from a fresh download. Before running Hotsync, I changed the datebook setting to "Desktop overwrites handheld". I then Hotsync'ed. Then I re-installed Holli-dates. My TX worked and I was also now able to open Palm Desktop. I did lose the few dates in my date book that I had saved but it is no big deal since I got the TX for Christmas and didn't have much loaded anyhow. After Hotsync'ing  a couple of more times, I went back to my Docuements/Palm OS Desktop/(my device name) on my PC and deleted the renamed backup and datebook. Everything is working fine now.

  • Error 1327 when installing Palm Desktop 6.2 on Vista

As far as I understand, I need to use version 6.2 on Vista? But how can I install it if the stupid installer does this space check? I have no intention to install on H: - it should be installed on C:. I do have my Documents folder stored on H:, which is a network drive.
    Please help!

    Hello,
When installing Palm Desktop 4.0 on my Mac (MacBookPro= Intel CPU + OS 10.5.6), the installation fails when trying to install the last files (.prc files). I cannot find any installation log to know what the problem exactly is. If I try anyway to run the software, Palm Desktop seems to run OK, but HotSync Manager fails (error related to "PPC-lib").
The problem is I am still using my old but fine Visor, so I don;t think I can install a more recent version of Palm Desktop.
    Thanks for any help  !

Hello Walter and welcome to the Palm forums.
For such a new Mac, I'm fairly certain, you are going to have to use Palm Desktop 4.2.1 Rev D or later (I believe that Rev D is the latest) for Mac OS X.  You can download Palm Desktop 4.2.1 Rev D for Mac OS from the Palm website.  You may need to pick a newer Palm handheld to gain access to the download link.  If that is the case, pick the Tungsten T5, it should require Palm Desktop 4.2.1 Rev D.

Did you upgrade from a previous version of Palm desktop?
Do you have all your current data on the Treo?
If you have your data in Palm desktop and it is current, export the data for backup purposes, uninstall Palm desktop 6.2 and re-install 6.2.
Here are the export procedure instructions.
The best way to preserve your data is to export the data in each category in Palm Desktop to a seperate folder on your PC.
Create a new folder on your PC somewhere that is convenient. Name it something like Palm Desktop Data. Click on the link below and follow the instructions on that page for the export procedure.

Anytime you make a change in Palm Desktop, export the data that was changed to that folder and save again to the external media.
With this process you can always import the data back into Palm Desktop anytime you have a problem with the data in Palm Desktop or if your computer/hard drive/device crashes.

  • Installing Palm Desktop 6.2 on Vista Business: only installs Media and Install, no Cal, Contacts

I attempted to install Palm Desktop 6.2 under Vista Business on top of Palm Desktop 6.2 beta. I selected a complete install.  After the installation and the device sync, only the Media and Install sub-applications were available on the desktop (though all were still available on the handset).  No Calendar, no Memos, no Contacts, nothing.
I subsequently re-installed (twice), each time removing the Palm Desktop software completely (from the control panel).  Same result.  Is there some trick to this I need to know?

Thanks, I very much appreciate the help.  But why does this happen?  I mean, after I tried it,
I figured, okay, maybe if I change the security permissions no the executable so that my id
has full control...  But no.  I did that (also changed the permissions on the link), but when I
bring it up under my account without running it as Admin, it still brings up only the media
portions of the Desktop.  Then I went through c:\Program\Files\Palm and gave full control
permissions to my id for every executable I found in the top level directory.  Still no joy.
I do appreciate the help -- it certainly beats not being able to access my calendar at all --
but I'm afraid I have to call this more of a workaround than a fix.  For one thing, I'd like very
much to be able to access my calendar from a userid on this machine that does not have
Administrative privileges.  Any chance for a fix at any point in the future?
    Thanks again!

    1. dont install the software just yet please follow
2.let palm desktop thru thye firewall program and make an exception for it there.
    3. disable and antivirus software as it sees palm as a threat.
4.now install palm desktop i used my old version palm desktop 4.0 BUT DONT INSTALL THE PROGRAM IN PROGRAM FILES try somewhere else like documents( this i read on another site where someone tried it but failed there).
5.now turn on your palm pda and open up hotsync page, up in the upper left screen corner touch the hotsync tab and down should come a sub menu, form here you need to set up all of your conduits, modem sync preferencesmconnection setup etc make sure they are set for how you will be hotsyncing.
6.now open up the desktop program and on your toolbar you should see the hotsync icon click on this and set  set the options here.
7.now you should be able to hotsync(communicate) from the pda to the computer .
Hope this helps , sorry that some one like me had to figure it out by staying up late until i got it .
MICROSOFT apparently doesnt care if you fix it that way you bite the bullet and buy a windows mobile device.
and PALM i think about the same
too bad if you think about all the millions of these devices out there they are pissing alot of people off and losing sales from it.

I have a 13" macbook from 2009 and for some reason can no longer change my desktop image by just clicking on an image in system prererences>I-Photo. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

Your Desktop Picture settings and Dock items are stored in the files
    /Users/your short user name/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist and
    /Users/your short user name/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
in the "Preferences" folder in your user library. This looks like the system has trouble to write to these files. Check the permissions on your user library and remove the above files from your user library, then log off and on again.
Your user library is hidden in Lion and Mt. Lion. To reveal it, use the Finder's "Go" menu. Select "Go" in the Finder's main menu bar and hold down the alt/option key, until you see the "Library"  in the drop-down menu. Double click it to open a Finder window, so you can browse the files inside.

    Download IkernelUpdate.exe.
Once downloaded, double-click it. This installs the InstallShield engine for your installation.

    Hello joelfromn. charleston,
It seems you are unable to activate iMessage on a device with no carrier service. The following article provides information regarding activation issues:
If you get an error when trying to activate iMessage or FaceTime - Apple Support
    Check your device settings
Make sure that you’re connected to a cellular data or Wi-Fi network. If you're using an iPhone, you'll need SMS messaging to activate your phone number with iMessage and FaceTime. Depending on your carrier, you might be charged for this SMS.
Go to Settings > General > Date & Time and make sure that your time zone is set up correctly.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.

  • I set up Keychain and do not have access to the telephone I gave.  Now I can no longer connect my ipad to my windows computer.  I can not turn off Keychain...it is awaiting authorization from the SMS on the telephone I do not have access to.

I set up Keychain and do not have access to the telephone I gave.  Now I can no longer connect my ipad to my windows computer, itunes does not automatically open when I plug in the USB.  I can not turn off Keychain in my ipad since authorization is pending awaiting the code sent by SMS, which I can not get.  Can someone advise how to get rid of Keychain.  Should I cancel my icloud account?

    I appreciate your help.
Have reset the ipad, but that changed nothing.  I can not turn off Keychain, iit remains "pending approval".  Probably, the only thing to do is to close my icloud account...which I hate to do since there is a lot of data saved there.  But, I am unable to back the ipad up on my Windows 8 computer because itunes no longer opens when the ipad is attached.
Oh well...computers are computers and it is impossible to cover 100% of the situations.
Keychain iss not the best app for someone who lives in 3 different countries.
    Thanks

Assuming you're using iTunes 11, when the iPhone is connected to iTunes it will show at the top right just next to the iTunes Store button. Also by pressing Ctrl+S to Show Sidebar you will find the device in the same place it was in iTunes 10
