I can no longer open a new tab in firefox

I cannot open a new tab in firefox. If I click on a link, a new tab opens, but if I use the new tab button or control t nothing happens. I used to be able to open multiple tabs, but suddenly this changed. Can you tell my why?

Uninstall the Ask toolbar and it should work again. There is a compatibility issue with the Ask toolbar and Firefox that prevents new tabs from being opened.

  • Can no longer open a new tab for one window browsing

I used to be able to open a new tab without having to open a new firefox window. I can no longer do this. My Firefox version is:

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons (Ask.com toolbar) is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

  • I can no longer open a new tab by clicking on it or by using file and new tab menu, so what do I change or reset for new tabs to work?

The tabs were working fine, but now tabs will not open when I click on the 'open a new tab + ' button, or if I go to 'file, new tab'. A new tab only opens when I click a link, but I cannot open a tab at will to start a new page. I used your troubleshooting data, but it did not help. I checked tabs settings in Options and all is checked, and I even reinstalled firefox. What do I do to reset or change settings so the tabs will open?

There is a reported incompatibility between the Ask Toolbar and Firefox 3.6.13 that causes new tabs to not open. This problem needs to be fixed by Ask; they need to update their toolbar add-on for Firefox. Until the incompatibility is fixed by Ask, you can disable the Ask Toolbar or un-install it from your system.

  • I can no longer open a new tab either by clicking on it or using the File/New tab command.

I used to be able to open a new tab by clicking on the plus sign to the right of already open tabs. For some reason this function has stopped working. I have also tried "File/New tab" with equal lack of success.

Try uninstalling the Ask toolbar and it should work again. There is a compatibility issue with the Ask toolbar and Firefox that prevents new tabs from being opened.

  • Clicking on a link no longer opens a new tab with Firefox 17.0.1 update of today

New tab on clicking link opened earlier today but not since Firefox updated itself to 17.0.1. When I click on a link, the page just jumps, but the new tab doesn't open. It will open if I right click the link, which I shouldn't have to do. How can I (or can I) unflub this bug? Thanks

This issue can be caused by an extension that isn't working properly.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • I can no longer open a new tab by clicking on the next one to the right?

I was always able to do this until today. I rebooted the computer, now I can't. Why

The Ask Toolbar is causing that in the Firefox 3.6.13+ versions. Uninstall that extension.
There are a couple of places to check for the Ask toolbar:
    * Check the Windows Control panel for the Ask Toolbar - http://about.ask.com/apn/toolbar/docs/default/faq/en/ff/index.html#na4
    * Also check your list of extensions, you may be able to uninstall it from there - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Uninstalling+add-ons

  • Can no longer move a new tab into Pinned App section in FF17

After the update to FF17 I can no longer move a new tab into the Pin As App section without first pinning the tab. I liked how it worked before, where if you put it to the front or between 2 pinned tabs it would just pin itself and place it where you told it to... Is there an option to restore this? If not, no big deal, more of a minor annoyance really.

hello andvarix, the drag&drop behaviour for tabs has changed in firefox 17 - they now move within the tab strip while being dragged. unfortunately the behaviour that you're now observing seems to be a somewhat intentional by-product of this change, it is unlikey that this will be fixed soon. you'd have to resort to the usual method of right-clicking a tab & select to pin it as app tab.
for reference see [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=787897 bug #787897] (please don't post in bug reports).

You can use an extension to set which page to open in a new tab:

how do open a new tab in firefox 6.01? the + symbol has disappeared - the tab grouping stuff is not intuitive

You can find the New Tab button showing as a '+' on the Tab bar.
You can open the Customize window and drag the New Tab button that shows as a plus sign (+) from the Tab bar on another toolbar and it will become a regular toolbar button like the New Tab button that you have in Firefox 3 versions.
If you can't find the New Tab button then click the "Restore Default Set" button in the Customize window.<br />
If you want the New Tab button at the far right end of the Tab bar then place a flexible space to the left of it.
Open the Customize window via "View > Toolbars > Customize" or via "Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout"

When I open a new tab in Firefox 16.0.1 the focus is on the address bar for a second or so then the focus moves to the search input field. If I start typing something the first character fills in the address bar then the rest is typed into the search field.

    A few times a week

Firefox is shutting down windows I want to remain open. Example: I am done viewing one window. I click the X to shut the window and it shuts two windows. Every single time, attempt to close one windows, two windows close. Lately, I have been opening several windows with nothing but google search, just so it will shut that window and not something else I want to remain open. I could understand this if I was using tabs, but I am not. This has been going on for over two weeks. I don't like going back to history to open a window, I did not want closed in the first place. Isn't that what 'Windows' is all about? Any ideas?
