I can no longer open any pdf files.

As of yesterday, pdf's don't open!  I've tried the latest Adobe Reader, Preview, and Safari. Never had this problem before.  I've reinstalled Reader and restarted my computer (running OSX 10.8.3), no help.  This problem is true for my new and old pdf's.  The message I get in all cases is "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired."  Any ideas?  Is there a pdf destroyer virus out there running on Macs?

Set Preview as your preferred app to open PDF files. Click once on any PDF and Get Info (command i).
Towards the bottom of the info widow, Open With:
Choose Preview, then click on Change All...
To download a PDF from a website, right click (control click) on the link and Save Linked File As... and Preview (instead of Adobe) will download it. Save to any convenient location. Then you can open it in Preview with a double click.
You can still use Adobe Reader by right click and Open With...
Bonus: Preview has a smoother scroll than Adobe.
Keep Adobe because its Flash Player will show web videos.
Regards,
Ian.

I would try using this tool to first remove all traces of Acrobat from your computer:
    http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html
Then, you can download the full offline Reader installer from
    http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/
After downloading, restart your computer and run the installer before doing anything else.

Why can't I open any PDF files ?

I am running Safari Version 5.1.5 (6534.55.3) on my iMac 10,1.  After my last Adobe update, my pdf files are nothing but a black window.  Have tried reverting to an earlier version of Adobe, but still getting a black window.  What next steps should I take?  Thanks.

  • Since downloading firefox, I can no longer open a PDF file? How do I get my computer to open PDF files?

I am enrolled in college and have to down load graph paper. The teacher posted a link to her copies of graph that we can download at home. The graph paper link is a PDF file and when I click on the link the page opens but it's only a white page. I also have this problem whenever I try to open any PDF file. Usually, the screen goes black. This problem started when I downloaded firefox and I do not know how to fix it. Can you help?

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased.

  • After up grading to Adobe Reader XI why can't I open any PDF files?

I am running windows vista and had been using Adobe Reader 8 - when I upgraded,  can not open any PDF files. When I attempt to open a PDF file, I receive the following messages:
    Update available
Please take a few seconds to update Adobe AIR and get the very latest features. Acrobat.com cannot continue until you update Adobe AIR.
after attemptng to down load the "update" I receive the following message.
    Sorry, an error has occurred
This application requires an update to Adobe AIR but downloading that update was not successful.
I have uninttalled all of my Adobe freeware & reinstalled statring with "adobe AIR" then "adobe Reader" and then attempted to opne a PDF file only to see the same  message

    Thank you Pat,
I have already been there done that. I first  Un-installed all of my adobe freeware (reader, flash player, air. etc) then started reinstalling. First I reinstalled reader (latest version Reader X), same error messages. added AIR (latest version not listed - Last updated April 1st, 2012 -
maybe that should tell me something), same error messages. I un-installed these two and reinstalled AdobeFlash Player,Adobe Shockwave Player,&Adobe Media Player, verifying that each worked after each reinstall of the next program everything was OK until I put Reader back on (NOTE: I dug all the way back to version 8 & still had the problem). for some unknown reason I finally right clicked on a PDF file on my desk top & was greeted with a the drop menu & he option of "open with" for fun I clicked on the "open with" & found that I had two options the first was a white Icon with the Stylized A and labeled Acrobat.com the second was the normal red Icon we all know & live
when I reset the default to the normal red Icon everything began to work just as I have always had adobe reader work. Now I have no clue how or when I picked up the "Acrobat.com" program even worse it does not show up under programs on the control panel. When I have a few moments this evening, I will run a search for "Acrobat.com" & hopefully be able to remove it from my computer.
Bottom line I don't know how I got the program which seems to have caused the breakdown of adobe reader but by resetting the default program to open PDF files it is now working as it should
    Thanks for the suggestion.
    Sincerely,
    Richard L. Cornick

  • Why can't I open any pdf files with any version of Adobe Reader after I upgraded?

Upgraded Adobe Reader not too long ago and after then it stopped opening pdf files. I had an old version of Adobe Acrobat and that opened the file no problem. I tried to downgrade Adobe Reader, but that didn't fix the problem.
Just tried to open Adobe Reader by itself without any files and it still crashed.
    FYI – I’m using Windows 7 (Microsoft 2013)

It's not a good idea to have both Acrobat and Reader unless they're both of the same version number (like X or XI). Such a situation can cause all kinds of conflicts and crashes, as you've seen. Also, if you have an old version of Acrobat it's might not be compatible with your OS any more.

  • Can no longer open existing pdf files

My adobe free reader program has recently become very slow and fairly non-responsive lately.  I use PDFCreator Plus for printing.  When I attempted to print a PDF to the PDFCreator Plus today (as I've done for years) when the reader was opening files so slowly, it changed all of my Adobe PDF's to PDFCreator Plus files.  It allowed me to switch them back, but now I cannot open any existing or newly created files.  I have thousand's of pdf's.  I have since loaded Foxit because I run two businesses and can't work without access to my pdf's.  I would like to use Adobe again but need to know what to do to regain the ability to utilize the program and open my pdf's once again.  I use Adobe's Free Reader with latest version 11.0.07 downloaded May 22, 2014.

PDF Creator Plus combines a virtual printer with a preview application that displays your printed document before the PDF is created.  I use it with  the proposal software at my office.  It's a program that is less costly than Adobe.
Cannot means I can't?  When I click on a pdf, nothing happens.  Nothing opens.  I need to be able to access my pdf's in order to work expeditiously.  My proposal and accounting files are mostly in pdf's.   I downloaded Foxit  but using Foxit is an onerous task.
I am not sure what happened, but when I was trying to open some files from my accountant today to view in Adobe Reader, the pdf's became non-responsive.  When I clicked on an existing file, somehow it changed every Adobe pdf to a PDF Creator Plus pdf document.  I could right-click and choose to switch back to Adobe pdf's , but when I did, something really went awry, and now nothing happens at all when I click any pdf's (and they appear as regular Adobe files).
Again, I can open them in Foxit, but if I save them again, they are still useless unless I remain in the Foxit program.

  • Can no longer open any native files

Suddenly when I try to open any of my native .an files I get the following error "Edge Animate encountered errors reading the HTML in this file." Three out of the four were working fine and I hadn't even opened them for some time. Any ideas?

    Howdy,
    resdesign
Is there a way to open older Edge .an files? The backwards compatibility for Edge is horrible.
I currently have access to Edge CC 2014, but it's giving me the same error message as above. I don't recall what version of Edge I was using (I believe the one just before CC 2014?), and I don't have any published files. I have the source .an file and all project assets.
    Thanks for any help!

MAC OSX version 10.4.11 and I can't seem to open any PDF
I'm having this problem as well. I have both Acrobat Professional 8.1.2 and Adobe Reader 8.1.2 installed with the proper internet plug-in, using OS 10.4.11. When I try to open a pdf file in Safari I get a window asking me to choose an application to open the file, but both applications are dimmed and cannot be selected. I have tried re-installing Acrobat Reader, but without success. In Firefox I simply get a blank, darkened window. __Previously, before I installed Leopard and was using Tiger, I had Acrobat Reader 7.0 as well as AR 8.0 installed, and I was only able to select AR 7.0, but it worked. Now nothing works. This is a serious problem that Adobe needs to address!

  • Can't open ANY pdf files. Updated to 10.1.8--still "Access Denied."

    Hello everyone,
I am currently unable to open any PDF files.
I recently did a clean re-install of Windows 7 (restored my Toshiba Satellite to out-of-the-box state).
After that, I restored all of my personal files from an external HD.
Now, every time I try to open a PDF, Adobe Reader gives me the following message:
"There was an error opening the file. Access denied."
The only solution I've been able to find online has been this:
Edit > Preferences > General> Clear "Enable Protected Mode at Startup"
    Also,
Edit > Preferences > Security (Enhanced)> Clear "Enable Enhanced Security"
Neither of these has fixed my problem.
I also updated to the lastest version--10.1.8--with no success.
I also re-downloaded and installed PDF Creator and its companion, PDF Architect. Curiously enough, I can't open any PDF in that program either. I'm not sure if there is some global setting I'm missing or something.
Access to these files is critical to my work, so any help is appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Lauren

I updated from within the Adobe Reader X program (Help > Check for Updates) and it tells me: No updates available. Installed: Adober Reader X (10.1.8) MUI
Is 11.0.5 something I would have to access another way?
Also, I'm still not sure if that would fix my problem. It seems most people with the "Access Denied" error had it fixed with the very first 10.1 update, and I have 10.1.8, so I'm not sure what's causing mine.

  • Suddenly Can't Open PDFs. Starting about three days ago firefox will no longer open any PDFs. I get a blank page in a new tab.

Suddenly Can't Open PDFs in Firefox. Starting about three days ago firefox will no longer open any PDFs. I get a blank page in a new tab. Nice timing, with finals and everything where I need to view PDFs of practice tests.

Mozilla Firefox did not do their job, here. I am an editor and am constantly online. Now, I have to go to Safari to download PDFs. I reinstalled an earlier version of Firefox to get rid of the problem, but somehow Firefox has deactivated my PDF download feature. This is a total wreck and I am so angry I could spit. Stop launching new products until you have fully tested them. Customers are not your guinea pigs. Please fix this now- and fire a few idiots on the way- the ones who let this happen.

  • Hello, I have transferred my Acrobat XI Pro from old MAC to the new one. After the transfer can not open any PDF file. Any idea how to solve this?

Hello, I have transferred my Acrobat XI Pro from old MAC to the new one. After the transfer can not open any PDF file. Any idea how to solve this?

    Hey ilyaz20360341,
Could you please specify how exactly did you transfer Acrobat from one MAC to other.
You might need to deactivate the software from your old machine and then activate it on the new one with the same serial number (for Acrobat license) or Adobe credentials (for Acrobat subscription).
If you have done the same way, then let me know if you are able to open Acrobat itself.
Do you get any specific error message while opening a PDF?
    Hope to get your response.
    Regards,
    Anubha

  • Just upgraded to Lion, can't open any pdf file downloaded from internet that was fine with Leopard. How can I overcome this obstacle ?

Just upgraded to Lion, can't open any pdf file downloaded from the internet that was fine with Leopard before. I just got a black screen when I clicked on a pdf icon on a given internet site, and same happened with several sites that I visited. How can I overcome this obstacle ?

Try two things with Safari not running:
    1) Launch Adobe Reader, open its preferences, select the Internet category, and check the values under "Display PDF in browser using".  If it's checked, try unchecking it.
    2) Look in /Library/Internet Plug-Ins (at the top-level of your boot volume) for something names AdobePDFViewer.plugin.  If you see such a file, try moving it to a folder named "Disabled Plug-Ins" (if such a folder exists) or onto the Desktop.
    Then see how things work.
