  • My iPhoto won't open or close on Mac.  I can't restart computer as it says it is open, but it won't display.

My iPhoto has always worked fine.  Now I can't get it to open.  Light under it in the dock is illuminated but the app won't open or close.  Tried to restart computer but message indicated I had to close iPhoto first.  I tried closing everything else and shutting power off, then turning back on.  Illuminated iPhoto app on dock remains and I still can't open or close.  Is this a common problem?  I've never had this happen.  I have over 5,000 photos - I'd hate to lose them!

Thank you.  It would not Force Quit and I got no error messages and Apple icon indicated all software was up to date.  However I think the problem is solved.  I used Spotlight and typed in iPhoto.  When i clicked on iPhoto icon there was a message that photos needed to be upgraded.  I selected upgrade and it now works!
Yes, the upgrading of the library was standard with this latest iPhoto update. Glad to see you are up and running again.

  • Can't Restart Computer After Software Update Download.

I have a PowerBook G4 which I had upgraded back in December to Leopard. After downloading software updates a couple of days ago, I tried to restart my computer and all I got was the Apple logo and the spinning gear. I brought my computer into the local Apple Store and the tech tried to archive and install from an external drive and the computer said there wasn't enough memory to install Leopard though the tech said I had enough RAM installed but that the computer wasn't reading the memory available correctly and that I needed a new memory board at a cost of $350.
I had a similar thing happen in December 2007 after I downloaded software updates. I brought my computer into the Apple Store. It seemed there was a "kernal panic." Everytime the tech deleted something it kept coming back "to life" and taking up too much "space" though this was different than not having enough RAM (I'm not terrifically computer saavy). I left the computer there for them to look at and a few days later due to whatever they did it was working again.
When dealing with the current problem a few days ago the tech said it was purely coincidental that the computer stopped working immediately after I downloaded software updates on two different occasions, but I found that very difficult to believe. I put in the installation disc that came with the computer and was able to get through the first steps of installing Tiger without actually beginning to install it, and I saw that the hard drive only had 49mb free and the tech said I needed 51mb to install Leopard. I called an Apple Care tech on the phone and asked if I could reinstall Tiger so that I could at least access the internet and retrieve my emails until I could get the Leopard issue resolved. He said doing so would delete Leopard and all of the documents I had done on it.
I mentioned I used to have my computer set up so I could access both OS9 and OSX on my computer and asked if that was now possible with Tiger and Leopard. He said I would need to go into the Apple Store and have them hook up my computer via firewire to another computer and boot up in target mode so that I could possibly delete some of the files taking up the memory and have enough room to install Leopard, or failing that could at least partition the hard drive and install Tiger until I could get the Leopard issue resolved.
I tried the safe boot someone suggested in a previous thread on this topic, but the computer would not boot up. Does anyone have any other ideas to solve this problem without taking the computer into the Apple Store? And how can I prevent this from happening during software updates in the future? I did not have the option with this last software update to choose only one download at a time. Software Update just started downloading what seemed to be one large update.
Thanks in advance for any help or illumination anyone can provide.

    Kristin,
I'm having similar problem after upgrade on my imac. Hangs with white screen after logging out. Have to press/hold pwr button to shut off, then press to turn on.
I have a LaCie porsche ext hard drive attached by usb. Should I unplug this and try reinstalling mavericks? I didn't remove ext hd during the upgrade, was I supposed too?
    Thanks,

  • Can't restart computer after Mavericks upgrade...

    Hello.
Just upgraded one of my machines to Mavericks (Mac mini, mid-2011). Installed without issue, and everything is running without issue, but, whenever I try and restart the computer, it logs out as usual, but then hangs on the grey screen, right before it'd normally reboot. The mouse is still active, but I can't do anything else. I've let it sit for over 30 minutes and eventually have to do a hard restart.
I've been wresting with this all morning—tried permissions and disk repairs, creating a new admin user and tried restarting under them, re-installing Mavericks (even the installer wouldn't restart—got hung on the restart, hard restart kicked into the isntaller though), tried removing all my peripherals...even tried removing deeply-integrated apps like Parallels and Little Snitch (which I didn't think would do anything since restarting under a newly created admin user failed), and no go.
Short of doing a clean-install, which I'd really rather not do, not sure what else to try.
    Anyone else have this issue?
    Any suggestions on a fix?
    Thanks!
    Kristin.

  • Install Failed - Can't restart computer

I tried installing Snow Leopard on my computer tonight. I left it once the installation began, and when I came back, it said it had failed and that I should restart, so I did. Once I did, it went through the steps of installing again, letting me choose my HD (only choice) to install it on. It started to install, but then said it couldn't install it on the HD. I then tried to quit the installer and it said something about choosing a startup disk, so I chose my HD again. It tried restarting, but after the gray screen with the apple, and then the spinning circle for a few moments, it turns off. I ejected the installation disk, and it still won't restart. I also tried a hard restart by holding down the power button until that loud beep is heard.
I don't know what else to do. Can anyone help?

    Hi K T,
Ok, I got it to go back to the installer by holding down C. I tried to install again and it didn't work. I ran First Aid and it said it can't repair the disk and that I should backup files and restore the disk. But I don't know how to backup my files?
Also, do you know if I can get telephone support for Snow Leopard if my AppleCare has expired?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Can't restart MacBook to Mac OS X from Win Xp

    Hello!
I got a problem with my MacBook. I was working in Win Xp and seems like I got kind of virus. The computer switched off by itself. Now when I switch on the computer its loading to Win Xp automatically and there is appear 'login window'. I choosing my name and writing password then computer have to go on to load Windows but it won't. It's starting but come back to login window. I suppose it's virus or something.
How can I restart computer to Mac OS X?

this thread hasnt been archived yet so I figured I would add a bit more info: the confusion of controlling which startup disk will boot the computer, has come to many a new Bootcamp user. The trick is that Apple included a startup control panel within Windows XP - this is the tool to select the Startup Disk you want. Its not apparent to look there because as we all know, Windows XP doesnt normally include any such panel !
yeah, hold-down-option-on-startup will work - but its not really the correct answer, because the user would have to keep doing this, and it forgoes the tool Apple built to really handle this issue.
Just chiming in to help fellow Mac / Windows users out there. HTH

  • Help, I can not quit safari or shut down my computer since updating to Lion.

    Can some one help?
Since updating to Lion, I can not quit Safari or shut down my computer.

Several ways to force quit when you can't quit an app normally.
Go to your Apple menu (top left in your screen) then from the drop down menu select Force Quit.
You can also force quit an app using the Activity Monitor app located in /Applications/Utilities.
You should be able to shut down your Mac by holiding down the power button until the screen goes black. Then restart as usual.

  • I am unable to quit or launch Safari. (Quit Safari option is not highlighted in menu) I cannot logout without quitting Safari. Can anyone help?

    MacBook Pro  OS X 10.7.5; 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7; 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
I Cannot launch Safari or quit Safari. The Quit Safari option is not active or highlighted in the Safari menu. I tried to shut down and Log Out but cannot because Safari must close first. I have checked for software upgrades and there are none. What do I need to do to use Safari Or shut down Safari?

    Hey there KeelyBoley,
If you are still not able to quit Safari, or shutdown/restart your Mac, I would force quit the application with any of these instructions that work for you:
OS X: How to quit an unresponsive application using Force Quit
Choose Quit by right-clicking or control-clicking on an app's icon in the Dock.
If your app does not close using the steps above, use any of these steps to force the app to quit:
Switch to another app, such as the Finder, then choose Force Quit from the Apple menu. Select the unresponsive app in the Force Quit window, and click Force Quit.
Press Command-Option-Esc, then select the unresponsive app from the Force Quit window that appears, and click Force Quit.
If Safari continues to become unresponsive such as in this case, a 3rd party plug-in may be the culprit, and this article will help you troubleshoot that:
Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • I can't close Safari. the " Quit Safari" is not highlighted.

    Any Idea's whats wrong?

No idea what's wrong but that also just happened to my wife on her OS X Lion MacBook Pro.  The little "x" that normally appears when you hover over a tab did not show up either, though tabs could be closed through File -> Close Tab.  I ended up force quitting Safari, and when we opened it up again it loaded every single webpage my wife had visited in the past week... with each page in its own window.  Closing all those was a pain, but the "Quit Safari" and the "x" on the tabs were back and the next time we quit and reopened Safari it behaved normally again (just one window opened to the home page).
