All you can do is get a newer model iPod. The 2G can only go as high as 4.2.1. Its hardare does not support a higher iOS version

It sounds like you may have a 2nd generation iPod Touch. If so, 4.2.1 is the highest iOS. Please note there was never a 2nd Generation 8gB version of the iPod Touch.

What version do you have? If iTunes is stating that iOS 4.2.1 is up to date, you most likely have a 2nd generation unit. It can not be upgraded beyond iOS 4.2.1.

If they still have iPods in stock of the older generation, you will get one of these; the color may vary, but other specifications should be the same. If not, you will most likely get a current model.
You may want to find someone willing to purchase that iPod, and then put the money toward a current one.

I am trying to update my itouch to the ipod 2.1 software, but when it tries to backup my itouch, it takes about 30 minutes and then comes back and says "an error has occurred while attempting to backup the ipod, error code is -6971. iPod 2nd Gens cannot be upgraded to iOS 5. However, you can still update it up to 4.2.1 version. That is the best you can do for your 2.1.1 version.

I'm presuming you are referring to tracks you've purchased from the iTunes Music Store, yes? If so, first, have you updated your iPod with the latest software? Note that I'm referring to the software (firmware) on the iPod itself, not your version of iTunes.
Second, have you played each track at least once within iTunes before you try and load the track to your iPod? If you haven't played the tracks once, try doing that and then see if they'll load.

I'm having a problem with my 2nd generation ipod nano. My ipod itself works fine! The thing is that my computer won't recognize it. It says something about there being some "malfunction" or other. Also, for some reason it doesn't want to charge right. Can someone please help me with this?

First of all, try another port on your computer. Some ports are not connected direct to the motherboard and do not recognize the iPod as well as those that are. Reset the iPod each time you connect it to another port.
Then try with the iPod in forced disk mode.
Putting iPod into disk mode.
Still no joy, see if any of these articles help.
