I can only read on my external usb hardrive

Hello There,
I could need some help
When I plug my "Samsung SP1604N Media Mass-Storage-Device" to my (brand new :-)) iBook, i'm only "allowed" to read but not to write on the single volume, that is formatted in Windows NTFS format.
First, I thought I can't plug windows formatted devices to a mac in general, but a friend's hdd worked pretty well.. it's formatted in NTFS too.
So I tried to plug my external hdd to a windows xp pc and it worked normal.
I'm not very good in those "things", so I tried to download some drivers, but it didn't work. Actually it's maybe not a driver thing, but as is said I'm an amateur.
so please, dear mac-comunity, tell me the big truth about my "disturbed" hardrive. Is there sth i can do about it?
Thanx in advance
Dan
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Hi Dan,
Welcome to the Discussions.
NTFS disks are read only on a Mac. There's no driver available that will allow you to write to one that's connected directly to your Mac. Your friends may be formatted FAT32, which a Mac can read and write to. You could format yours FAT32 and use it on both platforms. Use your Mac to format if (MS-DOS with Disk Utility) as it has no size limits on formatting FAT32 disks.

I have an external hard drive, from Iomega. that I can open and see my files. However, I cannot copy or save any file to it. On my PC I have it says that is possible to read and write in it, but in my Mac, it says I can only read. can somebody help me?
Also, Im a photographer, so I like to name a lot of files at the same time (used to do in on PC and it was very usefull.) cannot find out how to do it on my Mac. Really appretiate if some one can give me a solution! Thanx

Your drive is formatted with the NTFS file system.  OS X can read but not write to the NTFS file system.  There are third party drivers available that claim to add the ability to OS X to write to an NTFS partition.  I have not tried them and don't know if they work.
The only file system that OS X and Windows can both write to natively is the FAT32 file system.

  • Is it possible for a mac to run across a Windows based server such as in a school, and still be able to access all networked folders? I have been told that macs can only read down a certain number of folders

Is it possible to run a mac on a windows based server? We have a server based on Windows 7 in our school, and our techies are reluctant to let me buy a mac as they say macs can only read a number of folders deep, which would preclude me from accessing shared folders on our servers. Is this true, and is there a way round this? I would eventually like to get a suite of macs, but because all our resources are on the server, I have to be able to access them.
    Thanks for any help,
    Mike

I have found that both Linux and Mac (unix) are capable of reading "deep" folders while win 32 will have issues, your it people are clearly wrong.  I run a network with both win/mac. And as long as the win servers/pc's that have shares are set to allow apple file sharing in their folder properties.   And the macs are set to allow smb there should absolutely no trouble with you accessing anything across the platforms, heck, from a Mac to a win pc on some occasions you don't even need to include a "domain" name to log on to, and you can create aliases and make your own shortcuts etc... So you don't have to manually connect each time you boot up etc... But that's all personal preferences I suppose.
All I can tell you is that, I do it on a daily basis managing a small business. So your answer is yes you can.

  • Iomega "You can only read" permissions issue

    How
How do I change "Sharing & Permissions:" from "You can only read" to Read & Write on my backup Iomega like the rest of my mac?

Open the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and run the Repair Disk command on it. If the issue persists, add yourself in the Sharing & Permissions section.

  • I can only read e-books on my laptop. How do I get them unto my e-reader? It has something to do with the Adobe ID.

    Hello,
just now I downloaden an e-book from the library and I wanted to copy it to my e-reader. I needed an Adobe ID but I forgot my password (and the website to get a new password wasn't working) so I clicked on 'open without authorization' but now I can only read the book on my laptop and not copy it unto my e-reader. Anyone an idea how I can  undo this? Because I did manage to retrieve a new password.
    Thanks for your help!

It need to be removed from the computer you sold with it activated on. If you want to use that activation on a different computer. If you wiped that computer you need to contact Adobe this is a user forum users here do not have access to Adobe Activation servers and databases.

  • My external harddisk formatted in one iMac can only read in other iMac. How to make enable read

Why my external harddisk formated as R&W for one imac will remained for use in that imac only. When I bought a new imac the external hard disk end up can Read only. Shouldn't it remain the same as R&W? There is no way you can set back to R&W for my new imac. Why can't Apple make thing simple for us and let the complicated user do the complicated thing? Once formated it should be able to use for all PC and all Mac. How to reset without lossing all my files in the harddisk? I know the easiest way to reset is to reformat it and lose everything. Not user friendly isn't it?

    Jimmykkk,
If you want assistance you need to quit the rant and state what you need. Also be specific, you don't mention anything about the old Mac, the kind of EHD, what it is used for etc....
If you want to share a EHD between a PC and Mac you will have many limitations,  primarily the size of files you can store.

  • Can't boot from my External USB since 10.5.6 Update

Hi to everyone and sorry in advance for my english.
    Here's my problem:
I have a copy of Mac OS X in my external USB drive, just for emergency. Two days ago I decided to update the OS, so i reboot my iMac and everythings gone in the right way. So the disk had no problems.
I run Software update and I downloaded a 377 MB Update (from 10.5.5 to 10.5.6). The installation was successful and the iMac reboot. After first reboot I had a second reboot and now it happend. My screen is still grey with the apple logo and the black wheel that keep rollin'. The hard disk seems to be freezed.
Someone knows if there's something i can do?? I don't wanna reinstall Mac OS.
    Thanks. Andrea.

Restart, holding down the OPTION key until the icons start showing up on the screen. When the spinning gear stops, select the internal HD, and click arrow underneath. That should boot the machine with the internal HD. From there you can run Disk Utility on the USB HD. By the way, your English is fine.

  • Can i install SL on external usb drive & how to transfer over existing HDD

    Hi
I have a MBP with around 200Gb used on a 500GB hdd ( installed after warantee ran out ). The MBP has been working fine for a year or so now but when i tried installing Snow Leopard i found the HDD was not setup as GUID which stopped the installation.
I thought i would install SL on an external USB drive which had been setup as GUID but after 4 attempts this failed as well for some unknown reason.
What i would like to know is,
    1. if possible, how to transfer my data and settings etc to the external hdd from my current hdd inside the laptop.
    2. How to set up boot camp ( i have a few ms programs that run erratically in mac fusion or parallels)
    Can anyone help with this?
    Thanks
    Kev

    Hi Harrison,
is this a firewire drive? Be aware that you cannot boot from a USB drive: Don't start up from an external USB device.
Also make sure your drive's firmware is up to date.

  • Can Leoprrd install on a external USB HD and boot from it.

    hi, first post here.
I have serveral external usb hd. I wanted to know if i attach one to my aging G4 1 ghz 512 mb mac.
Put in Leopard Install disc in my dvd drive, will Leopard install on the external and boot from it.
this way I could somehow dual booy 10.4 or 10.5... Is this even possible.
Ps I also have a extrnal firewire drive but would perfer to install and boot from the USB port instead.
I know tiger didn't let me do this....but perhap Leopard will.

a Drive Partitioned in GUID will NOT boot to a PPC (G4,G5) machine. you need to Partition the drive using APM. APM will boot on both PPC and intel machines.
A GUID 10.5 startup will be reconized by the system startup prefrerence. but if you try to restart the computer using that startup, it will give you the missing OS icon and then revert back to the system drive.
Also I've noticed that you must be installing from a PPC systme to be able to install on an APM drive. If your on an intel drive, it will force to repartition to GUID before letting you install.
And since PPC doesn't support GUID, you can't install GUID while booted to a PPC.

  • My Mac OS X can not read PDF stored in USB which scan in 7-11 IBON

I have 7-11 IBON scan a document and put into my USB as PDF.  I can not read the PDF by my MAC so I went to a Internet cafe and used their computer to read my document in USB, I have no problem read my document in Internet Cafe at all. What should I do to make my Mac can read the document in USB?

Hello, not your fault, but when you use Paste instead of Paste & Match style, this forum makes it really hard to read the log.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • It can only read the enhanced portion of CDs

When ever I put in an enhanced CD (an album with extra media, like music videos, or web links) it only reads that part of it, not the actual music files. Is there a way I can set up in prefrences to access both the audio and multimedia?

It should display both the music and the enhanced media files, but if you have your setting in sys prefs like this
it will work as you want it to.

  • Can't read files from Sandisk USB

    Hi,
My MacBook Pro recognizes my USB drive, but none of the files show when I open up the USB. It says 17.47 GB available out of 32 GB, but 0 files.
My sister recently borrowed the flash drive to transfer files from her PC lap top, did she format the USB so that none of the files I had are available any longer? If so, I would think that it would show the USB with full capacity available.
I ran disk utility and tried to repair the drive. It shows that there are 3,549 files on the USB, but I don't see any of them.
    Thanks,
    Gordon

    Hello,
I take it you have the Sandisk Cruzer 32GB right ?
I have had the same issue, there is possiblely two reasons why this is happening, the second reason is what happened to me : ( .
    1. You sister may have partitioned part of the drive while on the windows machine to NAS format not readable on the mac side of things.
    2. Its seems to be a common issue with Sandisk Cruzer 32GB Devices, they suddenly become unreadable by the Mac after connecting them to a windows computer,
The drive is initially designed for use with windows machines and comes preloaded with U3 backup software ( which is the cause of all the problems )
you cannot uninstall the U3 software from a mac even by reformatting the device via disk utility
it can only be uninstalled via a Windows PC, which is a pain !!!!
if the second issue sounds like you trouble let me know and i'll explain how to get it working
    thanks
