I don't know why the serial number from the About This Mac window does not work, but you can try looking for and using the serial number that is physically printed on the surface of the Mac. This acticle explains where to find it.

You will not be able to use a windows Serial Number of MAC or vice versa. If you have a windows serial number and if your want to swap it with MAC then you can follow the article: Order product | Platform, language swap which will explain you about platform swap.

The serial number doesn't tell us anything. Open  > About this Mac > More Info, and tell us the first two lines of the window, where you should see MacBook Pro and a line below, which indicates the model you have:

Find your serial number quickly
You can activate software without following up and registering it... at least that was the case in the past. The serial number is normally located on the disc case or a box inside the main box. If you did not purchase the disc from Adobe then it is possible you would have dealt with a redemption code, in which case it would have been up to you to keep a record of the serial number, especially if you did not follow up and register the software.

In the serial number window, on the title bar check if the product name is Photoshop elements 13
There are some PE serial number which is specific for windows OS, you may check that also.

I had a free trial of Lightroom. I purchased the software. When I put in my serial number, it says the number is invalid. I've followed the instructions and went to "My Orders". Under the section where I would click "download" it says "not applicable". Probably because I already have Lightroom downloaded!!!
