I can send iMessages but I can't receive them?

Like the title says, i can send iMessages from my iPhone 5 but if anyone sends me a message it only comes in as a text message. I've tried resetting my network settings and turning off imessage and my phone but nothing seems to be working.

Just to be clear, iMessages can only be sent between Apple devices.

  • I am not able to send imessages but am able to receive them.

I am using an iPhone 4s running the latest iOS...when I try to initate an imessage to a contact (that I know has imessage and it's turned on), I can only send as a text. Once they reply or initiate a message to me, then I can send imessages back to them. Even if I delete the imessage, as long as I don't turn the phone off, I can then initiate imessages to those that have sent to me. Once phone is restarted though, I have the same issue.
I've tried changing my send/receive settings for imessage, does not seem to make a difference.

Sounds like a chronic Apple issue. See these two articles:

  • I cannot send iMessages, but my phone still receives iMessages.

For the past two days, my phone has not been sending iMessages, but has still been receiving them from others. When I try to send an iMessage, it will continue to try to send it for hours and hours, rather than just sending it as a text message.
I have tried turning my phone on and off, turning iMessage on and off, and turning my cellular data on and off. None of this has worked.
Is anyone else having this problem, and if so, do you know how to fix it?

Go into Settings>Messages and see if it is turned on and if it is, does it show that it is activated. Try turning it off and then back on again and see what happens.

  • New iphone 4 - can send imessages but error for others

New iphone4   I can send imessages but I receive an error message for regular texts - exclamation point in a red circle - says not delivered. I've tried all the "simple fixes" and nothing works.

  • I can send my friends iMessages but I don't receive them back.

I have an Iphone 5c and it's new, and whenever I text someone (who have iphones), I'm able to send iMessages, but I don't get them back? Also, I can send and receive iMessages from Ipods, just not iphones.

There's no right answer -- whatever the sender is using to send the messages.
I have mine set to my phone number and my email address.  Both are checked.  You probably only have one checked.

  • I can send iMessages but cannot receive them?

I can send Imessages to my friends with iphones but when I receive them they come in as texts. When I asked my friends they were sending me imessages but i was getting them as texts. This happened with multiple friends. What is wrong with my phone?

Try turning Imessage off, and use it like that. It won't have all the capabilties but it still should work.

  • I can send imessages but not receive them?

Apologies if this is a stupid question.
I just got an iPhone 5 and can send imessages without any trouble, but when I receive a message it says 'Text Message' in small grey writing above the message. Does this mean that people are unable to send me imessages? I know that the people I am messaging have imessage turned on because I am able to send them imessages.

Macrumors posted a solution for this.  I used it and it seems to have worked for me.
    Here's what they said:
    1. Turn off iMessage in Settings > Messages
    2. Reset networking settings in Settings > General > Reset
    3. Reenable iMessage in Settings > Messages

  • I can send iMessages but not send texts?

I don't know why but for some reason my phone will let me send iMessages but it won't let me send texts.
Also, when I send an iMessage it uses my e-mail and not my number?

    Hi Friend,
In Settings>>Message>>Send&Receive, set to be contact in your mobile number and email. Below you set to start new chat just with your mobile number.
    Hope it will be helpful

  • TS3899 I can send emails but I can't see them in sent mail

I am sending emails and they are received but I can't see them in my sent mail - I'm sure it's a settings issue but not sure how to change it?

    Hi giradifco62,
I understand your iPad Air has an email account set up that is able to send email but it is not receiving incoming mail. Depending on the type of account you have, the incoming server may either be a POP or IMAP server and this is more than likely where the issue is. You did find a good article for troubleshooting Mail on the iPad.
    iOS: Troubleshooting Mail
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3899
If you have gone through all of these steps including deleting and re-adding the account as you say, I would verify the POP or IMAP settings with your provider and make sure they are correct. The following webpage is also a fantastic source for server information.

    Thanks for reaching out,

I just started having a problem with her receiving my texts.

  • I have a macbook pro and have ichat i want to send iMessages but i can't.

my sister has a brand new macbook air and she has the messages app but i have ichat and it does send anything to her even though i've added her as a buddy and it shows her contact number - my contacts are synced through iCloud and on ichat I'm using my yahoo as theres no option to use my iCloud. what do i do?

    Hi,
iChat used to use Apple issued IDs  (@mac.com @me.com  @iCloud.com) as valid AIM screen Names due to an Agreement Apple have had with AOL for the last 14 years.
However at the end of June the older @mac.com and @me.com items stopped in iChat 5 and earlier due to changes for security reasons.
If you have Lion (OS X 10.7.x) which gives you the updated version of iChat 6 then you can still use these IDs.
Add the ID as if it is an AIM account using the password you use at Apple.
Your  sister will need to do the same (create a new AIM Account in Messages).  Most likely her computer is running mavericks (OS X 10.9.x)  and will only list AOL when trying to add an Account.
    To be clear.
iChat can Login to the AIM service, Jabber servers and the Yahoo servers at iChat 6 plus it has the Bonjour account.
AIM names can be registered at AIM (AOL run a whole set of pages listed as "AIM").
    AIM means AOL Instant Messenger.
AS I said above Apple Issued IDs are also valid as AIM Screen names and this continues in Messages in Mountain Lion and Mavericks.
Jabber servers can be Private (only those at the host site can join such as a company server) or Public. (anyone can join)
Google run a Jabber server based on Google Mail IDs
As you can see there is a separate Add option for this.
Facebook offer a chat option which gives you a Chat ID which is also Jabber based.
The Yahoo Option will only allow actual Yahoo IDs (despite several others being valid nowadays)
    This service is text Only.
In both Apps the AIM connection must be to a valid AIM name (AIM to AIM)
    Same for Jabber and Yahoo.
None of them will contact a Buddy on the other services. (AIM to Jabber does not work)
The iMessages account in the Messages app is another service like AIM and Jabber that Apple run which allows messaging to iOS devices as well as Macs.
But again it is a separate service and does iMessages to iMessages only, based on Apple IDs and iPhone numbers that have been registered with the service.
You may have worked out that an Apple Issued ID (@Mac.com, @me.com and @iCloud.com) can be the iMessages ID  AND the AIM valid Screen name
However your sister will need to enter the info twice - once in the iMessage Pane and again as an AIM/AOL add account option.
You may also have noticed that Jabber IDs look like emails.
    Yahoo Account IDs are emails
AIM Account Names can be emails.
This does mean that you can add the "wrong" Buddy to the "Wrong" list and they will only appear as Off line as not check is done by any service on the validity of the name or ID being used.
There is one other thing you also need to know as you added an phone Number as Buddy.
This can actually be done on a AIM Buddy List  if the Phone is question is based in the United States and on one of these carriers.
Therefore you can Add a phone number if it has  a leading +1 as the Country Code.
Sticking in +1234567890 gets formatted like this in a Buddy list.
Try and use it and the AIM service will send this back to you.
