I can send messages but not receive.

My iChat used to work fine. For some reason, however, now I can send messages that my buddies can read but do not appear in my chat box after I hit send. I can no longer read any messages my buddies send to me. I also cannot see chat room invitations that are sent to me. My Mac store people tell me they can find nothing wrong and it "works fine" when they use it. I thought perhaps it was my user account, but I can use iChat at work and on my husband's iMac with no problems. All the settings seem to be identical. I thought about setting up another AIM account, but my original works fine on the other computers.
Oh, I am able to video chat with my husband. It seems to be only the text chat that does not work.
Any ideas or suggestions?

Hi,
Chats that do Text Chat and then send files or Pics in the chat change it to a Direct IM
This changes the Protocol iChat uses to send and receive data on.  (It swaps from port 5190 (Or whatever login port you have set) on TCP to using port 5190 on UDP)
This means you have to have port 5190 open on your router to the UDP protocol.
(Of course it has to be opened in such a way that two computer can use the port and protocol at the same time. (UPnP is method of choice)
Group chats also use port 5190 on UDP
This would seem to be the most likely thing with what you list about the account and the Computer working at a Store  (I take it they tested Your iChat Account there ? (testing their own account would prove very little)

  • Can send SMS but not receive after update...

After updating my iPhone 4S to ios6 i have problems with receiving messages.I can send SMS but not receive. What to do?

Although I don't believe in consequences, I think this might be one of them. My email was working fine until I installed my VPN. I use the Thunderbird email application, which I like a lot, for three Hotmail accounts and two Yahoo accounts. After installing the VPN I could receive mail but could not send it on any of my accounts. I contacted the VPN and they sent me some numeric IP Addresses to put in my account settings. One for the Hotmail accounts and one for the Yahoo accounts. I did as instructed and the email seemed to work okay. It was late in the evening and I went to bed. The next morning, I could send and receive emails on the Yahoo accounts, but could only send emails on all of the Hotmail accounts.
I guess I'd like to know if anyone else is having this same problem. I'd hate to think it was just me. :-)
I would like for Thunderbird to tell me if there is a way to change the outgoing server in the Account Settings, so I can enter the IP Address in there, or does the fact that I entered an IP Address in the Server Name box, cause it to override any other entries? Or should that even make a difference with me receiving mail?
Also, at what time limit does Thunderbird send back a message that the connection to the server timed out? I continually get that message.
I found a way to do a ping on the Hotmail server and the fastest response time for the last two days was 258.09 which seems very slow for a business computer. At least for a business that wants to stay in business. So is that time above the Thunderbird threshold of the connection time out message to be generated?
Thanks for all your help and suggestions, Carole

Try Mail->Window->Connection Doctor.  If there is a problem reported, try:
Open Mail->Preferences and check your settings.
If you still have a problem, Copy your settings (screen capture ⇧⌘4), delete account, and re-setup account

  • My iPhone 5s will send messages, but not receive them. Replies show up on my iPad. How do I fix this?

Anyone know how to fix imessage and FaceTime issues with iPhone 5s?  I can send messages, but replies only show up on my iPad, not my phone. Can't FaceTime at all, just on iPad.  Says "waiting for activation". Or "Activation unsuccessful. Turn on iMessage to try again."  And a screen comes up "iMessage Activation. An error occurred during activation. Try again."  If I try to log in with my Apple ID, it doesn't work, either. Same problems for FaceTime.
I have tried all the "fixes" I found on another thread, nothing worked. This is a replacement phone. My first one had problems with the touchpad not working, but the messaging and FaceTime were fine. The touchpad works on this phone. Any suggestions?

Fixed!! My cellular/internet provider had to do a restore and now it works

More than likely, you use outlook or similar application on your computer for email and it is just not leaving a copy of the message on the mail server.

  • Why is mail sending messages but not receiving?  problem just started.

not sure that anything has changed on my imac recently.  i am running 10.7.3.  i can send mail but it's not receiving.  help appreciated.

    benhill00,
Please look over Apple's Mail Setup, Troubleshooting etc.. link. I suspect a setting has just gotten "confused" or become corrupt somehow. Frequently all you need to do is go into the Mail's Account settings and re-input the settings.

What is the router model number and version? You may find the model number underneath the router itself on one of the stickers.
Anyway, if you are plugged in to the router:
    1) open up internet explorer and go to 192.168.1.1
    2) username: just leave it blank password: admin
    3) go to the wireless tab:
    You may change the ff:
SSID - this is the name of your network
Channel - signal of the router (suggested value is 11)
----> save settings after you have done the necessary changes
    4) go the wireless security (found on the subtab)
    set-up security:
    - suggested mode is WPA Personal
If your router is a WRT54G v5-v6, go to the status page:
    - check the firmware version, if the firmware version belong to any of the ff. below then download and upgrade the firmware.

  • I can send imessages but not receive them?

Apologies if this is a stupid question.
I just got an iPhone 5 and can send imessages without any trouble, but when I receive a message it says 'Text Message' in small grey writing above the message. Does this mean that people are unable to send me imessages? I know that the people I am messaging have imessage turned on because I am able to send them imessages.

Macrumors posted a solution for this.  I used it and it seems to have worked for me.
    Here's what they said:
    1. Turn off iMessage in Settings > Messages
    2. Reset networking settings in Settings > General > Reset
    3. Reenable iMessage in Settings > Messages

  • I can send email but not receive on my iphone 3GS. Emails to my .me address are OK but not emails to the address hosted by Network Solutions. NS have checked my settings twice. I am using IMAP. Is this a problem with iCloud?

I use IMAP email hosted by Network Solutions for my main email address. I can send and receive this OK in my Mac Mail on my MAC book and also on webmail. However my iphone doesn't receive these emails but it can send. I have checked settings on my iphone twice with Network Solutions but no luck. Emails addressed to my .me address are received OK. I have a suspicion this problem started when I signed up to icloud.
    my ISP is BTconnect
    Any ideas?

Useful suggestions. In fact I had already deleted and re-entered the account details a few days ago without apparent success. The error message was along the lines of "cannot access the server".
Anyway about an hour after your message, my emails started coming through after a 6 month gap!  - makes me think someone at Network Solutions monitors these discussions.

  • Can send mail but not receive -- connection doctor OK, GetInfo shows msgs

In the last couple of days I stopped receiving email on my Mac in the Mail app, but not my PC. Both access POP3 accounts at the same ISP, different POP3 accounts. All software is patched to latest version using Software Update -- PowerMac G5 Dual, latest OSX version. On the Mac, connection doctor says I'm A-OK (internet connection, POP connection, SMTP connection.) Also, if I do a Get Info on the inbox and show messages on the server, it shows 75 messages on the server. I have not retrieved messages to my knowledge (so I don't think the server thinks I already downloaded them), and the "Messages that have been downloaded to my Mac" pulldown option in Get Info confirms this, by not showing any of the 75 messages in the Show all messages pulldown option. But -- Get Mail does nothing! I have tried rebooting, deleting and recreating the account, etc. Since I can get POP mail for another account at the same ISP on my PC, and I have touched nothing on the Mac, and all the diagnostics show the connection and POP3 chat is working perfectly, this very strange. I do not think I have applied any patches or anything that might screw it up, but who knows.
The only strange thing that might be a clue is the little spinning status indicator next to the InBox label runs for about 30 sec or so before it decides not to do anything -- seems a little long. Any suggestions? Any way to do detailed debugging of the POP3 session to see if the Mac-server conversation is wanked up somehow?
    Thanks!
    David

For POP accounts, Mail uses a file within the account folder to keep track of which messages have already been downloaded. Deleting it should cause Mail to download everything still on the server as if new. I don't think it'll work in your case, but try it anyway just to be sure:
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/.
    3. Locate one or two files named MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded and move them to the Trash. Mail 1.x used MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded to keep track of which messages had already been downloaded. Mail 2.x uses MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded2 for the same purpose.
You can use the Account Info window first to remove from the server any messages you don't want to be downloaded again.
You may try creating a new user account in System Preferences > Accounts, set up mail anew there, and see whether the problem happens there as well.
Another thing you may try is using a different method to connect to Internet, if possible. Also, if Preferences > Check for new mail is set to Every minute, changing it to something greater (e.g. Every 5 minutes) might help.
Something that usually works is removing some messages from the server (download them with another mail client first, to avoid losing them). Sometimes, Mail chokes on a message it cannot download, and that prevents it from downloading the rest as well.
Any way to do detailed debugging of the POP3 session to
see if the Mac-server conversation is wanked up somehow?
Detailed debugging no, but looking at the Console could be informative:
    1. Open /Applications/Utilities/Console.
    2. From the File menu, choose either Open Console Log, or Open System Log, or both, so that the Console application displays the contents of both system.log and console.log.
    3. Try to reproduce the problem and look at the bottom of the Console windows for messages that might be written there as a result. They may provide some clues as to what the problem is.

Oh, yeah. It only took two hours for the Support people to decide that. I'd already come to that conclusion several weeks ago. Being an ex-IT guy, I was reasonably confidant (probably without cause) that I could likely handle it if it were something on my end. But you have to let them go through their spiel.
I was hoping that someone else had had the problem and could shed some light on the cause.

  • Can send messages but cannot receive

Hello. I am an Apple newbie as I bought an iMac a few weeks ago. I am getting myself acquainted with iChat 4.0.2. I am able to successfully add buddies a variety of different chats (AIM, .mac, and Jabber). However, I am unable to chat. I can successfully SEND IM's and the recipient can see my messages, however, I cannot see the responses. It is quite odd. I was able to successfully do a Video Chat with a buddy of mine who also has a Mac, so that worked fine. It is the usual, run-of-the-mill, chatting which does not work fine. On my end a dialog box opens up, and when I type and hit return, it appears that everything "goes away"....it doesn't even show up in the dialog box. My messages appear to be going nowhere, but they do indeed show up on the receiving end. Most peculiar....if anyone can help me out, that would be great! Thanks much!

    ok,
    Delete com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist
You have to navigate to this manually in Users/(your account)/Preferences as Spotlight and Find do not look in this folder.
    Restart iChat afterwards.
This should reset your iChat/AIM login and sort the issue.
Also check that the outgoing Font choice in iChat > Preferences > Messages is active in the Font Book.

  • How can the incoming mail section on an iphone5 disappear? I can send messages but cannot receive them. Shouldn't there be an incoming section like the outgoing mail server section?

I Haven't received incoming email for nearly a week now.  I have checked the settings and the only thing that isn't there is the INCOMING MAIL SERVER section.  The outgoing mail server is there and is correct.  How can I get it back so that I can enter the mail server?

    Hi Olivier,
Thanks very much for that. it worked on my powerbook(running Tiger). I went to the link and followed the instructions and it worked. Did i mention that my dad who has a iMac running Leopard now has the same problem. I thought i would just do the same but the Preference in Mail for Leopard is of course different. There is no icon called "Server Settings" under Accounts section like there is on mine. Do you have a link for the same kind of instructions for Leopard?
    Thanks again,
