I can still wipe hard drive on a computer I sold?

I sold my 11" MacBook air to a friend a couple of months ago.
I just noticed that in my "Find my phone" app that the sold device is showing in the list of devices. I have the option to play a sound on it, remotely lock it, and remotely wipe it.
I definitely wiped the hard drive before I sold it so I have no idea how this could be happening.
Anyone have any ideas on this?

Is it possible that when you first gave your computer to your friend that your iCloud account information was still on it?
The name of the computer is not really tied to your iCloud account.  It just means that when the computer was using your iCloud account information that it's name was changed.
Also, once a device is in the Find My iPhone list, it's going to stay there until it's deleted.  So even if the computer has since had it's iCloud account information changed, it's still going to show up for you.
I think a quick conversatin with your friend will resolve things.
In the mean time you might want to change your iCloud account password.

You need to boot the computer from another source, e.g. a CD or an external drive. Then run Disk Utility, select the drive you want cleaned up, and run Erase. Note the security options: "write zeroes" will erase the drive completely.

  • How can I wipe hard drive and do a clean install of Mavericks?

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro that is terrible sluggish, probably from upgrades and semi-deleted Symantec software. I want to wipe the hard drive and do a clean install of Mavericks. I have all files backed up, and can reinstall software.
I think there is a way to do this with Disc Utility?  But don't know how.  Advice welcome

If you have Yosemite installed and want to reinstall it, do a backup,  preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors.  Reformat the drive using Disk Utility/Erase Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click the Option button and select GUID. Then re-install the OS.

When you reboot, use Setup Assistant to restore your data.

  • Can't Wipe Hard Drive of iMac G4 Running OS 10.2 Upgrade

    Hi,
I've been a Mac user for 7-8 years now, currently with a first generation MacBook (Black) from 2006 (2 GHz Core Duo).
My question, however, deals with an older Mac I have. I originally began using Macs on one of the earlier generations of domed, white iMacs in 2002. The specs are as follows for it:
    iMac (version 2.1)
    700 MHz G4 processor
    512 GB memory
    Running Mac OSX 10.2 Upgrade
My question deals with wiping the hard drive clean. I want to resell my iMac, to try and get something (though I know not much) for it, and so before I do it I want to not simply erase the hard drive but also write over it/completely wipe it so as to make sure sensitive information is fully deleted.
I found out that you can do this (i.e., writing over the hard drive multiple times) by using the startup disk beginning with OSX 10.2, but my problem stems from the fact that my startup/install disk for 10.2/Leopard is an upgrade, and not a full disk. When I bought the iMac in 2002, I did so right before Leopard came out, and so I bought the upgrade rather than the full package, and for some reason when I use the startup/install disk for it, I can't access the ability to wipe the hard drive clean (i.e., the "options" part, wherein I could choose to write over the hard drive and not just do a simple erase, doesn't appear when Disk Utility is brought up when restarting with the startup/install disk for 10.2 in the computer).
So my question is, how can I thus do a full wipe/write over of the hard drive, to securely, completely erase it, since the 10.2 upgrade disk isn't giving me that capability? Is there any possible way to do this, or do I have to somehow possess a full copy of 10.2 or later OS? (Also, FYI: I forgot to mention, I have no full copy of 10.4, since the startup/install disk for it included with my MacBook wasn't the full version on the black-colored disk, but the not-for-resale version on the gray-colored disk.)
I know this is my first time posting, so if I haven't been clear, please let me know. I'll be quick to answer back. Thanks, in advance.

10.2 is Jaguar or do you mean Leopard?

That had to be Jaguar then, right? Did you have the PUMA install disk or OS9? >and so I bought the upgrade rather than the full package, and for some reason when I use the startup/install disk for it, I can't access the ability to wipe the hard drive clean
I remember that being the case with upgrade disks. Those options are not available if I remember right.

Not if you have an earlier OS disk for that Mac.
You should be able to erase it, any way you want, using Target Disk Mode.
Then use Disk Utilty on your MacBook to do the erase on the iMac.

No, you can't use that disk...iMac is PPC based and MacBook is Intel plus it's a machine specific disk.

You are fine, except for the Jaguar/Leopard issue.

    Hi greg v.p44270855,
We would love to help. What part are you having trouble with? For starters, please make sure that you're logged in as an administrator, and temporarily disable any antivirus software. If you don't have the Acrobat installer, you can download Acrobat from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat.html.
If you're running into a particular problem with the installation, please provide some specifics about the problem (error messages, operating system and version, and so so).

There are a lot of embedded questions here, I'll try to hit them all:
    1) If you're reinstalling on the same partition, you do not need to be too crazy in how it gets formatted.  There's no performance gain to using BCWipe or anything.  When you format, you're just erasing the table of contents, then overwriting the
actual data later on anyway.  Just keep it simple.
    2) If you want to save the data, just copy it somewhere else before you delete anything.  If you're not concerned about the data, don't worry about it, just go back to answer #1.
    3) You can download the Evaluation OS from the MS website.  You cannot turn an eval copy into a full install without reinstalling, so are you sure that is what you want?  You'll end up test building, then when you like it, you'll have to do it
    all over again.
    4) ISO to DVD or USB: Doesn't matter how you end up installing it.  Today's machines can usually support any install media.  Some ways are faster, but you're only talking about saving minutes.  What does it really matter?

  • TS1382 I have a ipod classic 160GB and it's not showing any music anymore, but there is still 7GB of memory being used, and I don't have it back up on my itunes, since I had to put a new hard drive on my computer. Any suggestion to find out whats on that

I have a ipod classic 160GB and it's not showing any music anymore, but there is still showing 7GB of memory being used, and I don't have it backed up on my itunes, since I had to put a new hard drive on my computer. Any suggestion to find out whats on that memory or to get it the music back, there is approximately over 1400 songs on it?

What is the memory being used by, is it Other? If it is, that means the iPod can no longer read the music, so it has put it all in "Other".
The usual fix for this is to allow the iPod to Sync with its iTunes Library. If that doesn't work, the next option is to Restore the iPod using the Restore command in iTunes, on the Device/Summary pane.
Unless you are very (very) lucky, I suspect that you are going to have to Restore your iPod. Restoring will remove everything form the iPod and put back onto it only what it finds in your iTunes Library, which you say is currently empty.
    If you have to rebuild your Library after this issue, by adding all the music back again, this is going to be hard to hear, but for the future, you may want to consider always having a backup of your library. The easiset way to back the Library up is;
if the Library is small enough, burn it to a DVD, as digital files, not a "music CD".
If your Library is too large for a DVD, buy yourself an external hard drive and copy the Library onto the drive. Remember to update the backup every so often.

  • About to sell my macbook, how to wipe hard drive clean

I'm about to sell my macbook (I've upgraded) , how would I wipe the hard drive, the whole computer for that matter, clean of all websites I've visited, passwords etc?
Anything else you can suggest? Like clear all bookmarks, and in Safari pull down menu, I guess 'reset safari' and 'empty cache' too, etc?
And in Accounts under System preferences can I change the name? I see I can change the password, sorry I'm not too computer proficient...I hate to miss something.
    Thanks all

Here's what you need to do:
    1. Re-install Mac OS (don't choose an option that keeps the old files, wipe it clean!)
    2. After re-installing, open Disk Utility, and run the Erase Free Space utility on your newly formatted drive. This will ensure that your old files can't be recovered.
If you want your personal data off of your Macbook, simply doing step one will NOT be enough!!! Erasing and deleting are two different things. (Step one deletes, step 2 erases.)
Also, what chipperz posted should work.

  • Can't format hard drive

I have an iMac 21.5" mid-2010. One day my computer wouldn't get past the loading grey screen (rotating grey bars). Since I didn't have anything important on the comuter, basically no apps or anything (I had reinstalled the OS just recently), I decided to just wipe hard drive and install it again. My dvd drive doesn't work, so I've been using a Mountain Lion install disk on my flash drive (It has worked just fine the past few times that I've had to reinstall). When I tried to erase the hard drive using disk utility it first gave a "can't unmount" error, so I restarted and tried again, but this time it went with it and then gave an error along the lines of  "can't write to last block of disk". So after that the disk was basically empty (no partitions, kind of in a middle state). So I tried to use the partition tab and set 1 partition, GUID, and Mac as the name. It says partitioning, but it's basically stuck halfway through. I tried to use Terminal and list disks, and it shows 13 disks, each one ranging from 500kb to 5mb. The last one, Disk13, is my actual hard drive, 500Gb. I tried to run the erase command, which I found somewhere else on the forums on Disk13, but it says can't unmount.
Any help on erasing the drive would be much appreciated.

That's not good news for your internal HD, sounds like it has failed. I would run Apple Hardware Test (AHT) in extended mode at least 3x. If hardware errors occur that confirms hardware issues which means a stop at your local Apple Store or AASP is necessary to get it professionally diagnosed.
You can find AHT instructions at

  • How wipe hard drive clean without a disk and reinstall OS?

Running a 15" Mid 2010, OS 10.8.3; after migrating Profile to new MacBook want to wipe hard drive clean & reinstall Mountain Lion 10.8.3 in order to give to daughter as a "new" computer. All I can find in archived discussions is how to do it w/ a disk.

    Yes I would.
The iLife Apps, "i" Photo, Movie and Garageband (And "i" DVD and WEB if you Mac came with Snow Leopard originally), are not included with the Operating system. They are separate applications that you need to either download from the Mac App Store, from your Purchases area once you have logged into the MAS with the Apple ID you used to register that Mac with, or from the second System Reinstall Disc, the Applications disc, that came with your Mac if it originally came with Snow Leopard.
So I read you are running a Mid 2010 MBP. In that case you would need to use the second Original System Disc to reinstall the iLife Applications.
That may be a problem for you as the iLife apps that came with that system are 3 years old and may not want to install on Mt Lion 10.8.3.
If you run into problems installing them from that second system disc you may have to start off by first reinstalling Snow Leopard and then the iLife Apps and Then Upgrade to Mt Lion. Making sure after installing Snow Leopard and the iLife Apps you update everything through Software Update before you do the Mt Lion upgrade.
Sorry about the hassle but blame Apple for that.
Hopefully you have the Original system discs but if you don't then you can order a replacement set from Apple for a small charge.
    Good Luck & Best Wishes.

  • Can Itunes Library access 2 hard drives on one computer?

I have too much music, videos etc to live on one hard drive and am installing a 2nd hard drive on my computer. Can itunes library get files from different locations on my computer? Ex. different hard drive paths?
    Thanks

Mort already answered you, but I thought I would throw in, if you are going to a larger drive, you might consider consolidating/moving everything to the one larger drive if you can simply because it makes backing up or moving your library again much easier if everything is in the one folder.

Buy another hard drive.  They're cheap these days.
In fact, buy a couple of 'em.  I recommend a minimum of five internal hard drives.
    C: Windows and Programs
D: Project, graphic and audio files
