I can't access my old AOL account downloads - can you help?

I have just pruchased a new laptop. When I try and play music purchased from iTunes using an old AOL id, it keeps asking me for the password but does not accept it. When I try and reset the password it claims to send an email but the resulting email does not appear in any possible alternative email inbox that I have. Itunes want me to pay £25 to talk about this problem which is not of my making!

I hope you're less confused than I am!
You keep things nice and simple by having the same password for both AOL and your iTunes Store account (although we are all advised not to do that), but then when you buy a new laptop, you also change email addresses and set up a new iTunes Store account. Why?
If you have a new iTunes Store account, as far as I know, your songs purchased on the old account will not be accessible.
If you purchased songs from the iTunes Store, then on your new laptop, you need to sign into the iTunes Store, using the iTunes account that you purchased the songs from. It has nothing to do with AOL.
If you asked the iTunes Store to reset the password, and send you an email, perhaps you need to check the old email address.
Itunes want me to pay £25 to talk about this problem which is not of my making!

i used an aol account to purchase songs on the itunes store. i no longer use that aol account, it's inactive and i can no longer access or play these songs on my Mac. when i try to play the songs it says, "the aol screen name you enetered couldn't be found..." so these songs are locked up on my computer, attached to an old aol account that i can't access.

If you try to sign in 3 times using that expired AOL account, I believe it gives you an option to convert the account to an Apple ID. If you still have trouble, email the iTunes Store and they should be able to do it for you:

I guess I've been abandoned by the iTunesStoreSupport. They basically told me what caused my problem and now will not return any of my emails.
This message is mostly to inform anyone who "upgrades" an old AOL iTunes account to an Apple ID to be sure to use the same credit card for the new Apple account that you used for your AOL account.
About 2 years ago I "upgraded" my AOL iTunes Store account to be an APPLE ID. When I did that, I used a different credit card for my Apple ID than I had been using for my old AOL account. Big mistake. At the time I had no idea it would cause problems later. I don't remember seeing anything at all warning me about the importance of that at the time. Now, according to Shwetha at iTunesStoreSupport it is "important to use the same credit card for a successful conversion".
Everything worked fine with iTunes for the past 2 years, but a month ago I upgraded my hard drive in my computer and promptly recycled my old hard drive. Another mistake on my part.
A few days later when I went to play a song purchased under the old AOL account I got stuck in that endless loop where I get the prompt "This computer is not authorized to play __. Would you like to authorize it?" Then it asks me to Upgrade my AOL account, but I already did that 2 years ago. I went ahead and attempted to upgrade the AOL account again, but I was still stuck in the endless loop. (note: I did successfully authorize the computer for my Apple ID with no problems.)
I followed every step in the Troubleshooting Guide "support.apple.com/kb/TS1389" including the step where I delete the SC Info folder, but I was still stuck in that endless loop of authorizing / deauthorizing.
Shwetha was very professional and did work with me pretty quickly through 3 rounds of emails and various troubleshooting attempts. But as soon as we realized that I had used a different credit card when upgrading the AOL account to an Apple account and that the conversion was not successful, they stopped replying to my emails. I guess I'm a lost cause.

I repeat here a post I made elsewhere: I hope that it helps you, and, if it does, please post the info elsewhere.

I encountered this problem yesterday, when I tried to play some songs in my ITunes library on a new computer; this is an ITunes library that I had moved from my old computer.
I called Apple Support, and the excellent Tech person began looking into the problem.
Meanwhile, while I was waiting for him, I Googled the problem (which I should have done first): lots and lots of people (I discovered) have bumped into this same frustrating problem.
Yes: the problem arises when you move to a new computer with an ITunes library that includes songs you bought, way back when, using an AOL ID.
Apple Support contacted ITunes. And ITunes tracked down my AOL account, and then issued me (that is, me and Apple Support) a new Apple ID. There are two or three additional steps; they are not hard, but you need the combo of help from Apple Support and ITunes. The key thing is getting the new Apple ID, which you must have, and which, once it has done its work, you then can ignore..
I can now listen to everything--and I am signed in to ITunes using my current, usual Apple ID.
Note: All of this would be easier and simpler for us if we could actually speak to someone at ITunes; the only way we can get to a "live" person there is by contacting someone at Apple Support.

Sure, you can buy new things. You just can't re-download past purchases for 90 days after changing the AppleID used with a computer, as the link provided by ChitlinsCC discusses. To avoid this problem make sure you always have backups of all purchases you make which is a good idea in any case in case a distributor pulls an item from the store whereby you won't be able to redownload it.

Make sure her email address is not set as an alternate for your AppleID.
Then again, you don't know if it is associated with your AppleID.

Purchased songs with old AOL account, itunes won't play them, nor copy them

Years ago, I used my old AOL account name as my Apple/itunes login, and purchased several songs. Since then, I've changed my Apple ID, and songs I've purchased using that login play fine on my Mac, and transfer to my ipod/iphone. However, songs I purchased with the old AOL login will not sync to ipod/iphone, and when I try to play them in itunes, it comes up with "Computer is not authorized to play. You should also be able to log into your account on find some means of contact or a Report a Problem link from the account or an e-mail receipt (if you still have one).

Do you mean to edit your APple ID or to remove a mail address from the mail app.

The only thing I can see strange is that when I login my iCloud account through my principal email address, when I check my preferences is marked an @me.com address that is old and I don't use it anymore, but I can't erase it or even change it.
