I can't access my own files

I have been having a problem with my external hard drive, I think it is about to die, so I am in the process of copying all my files/folders to my wifes computer, which has a much bigger internal harddrive than my computer, but I have another problem besides the drive itself. I have run into this problem ever since running Vista, and thats the stupid security. Security isnt stupid, but you have to be a professional IT person to figure out the way Vista security works. Those stupid dialog boxes were definately NOT intended for the home user. I have files that I want to copy that aparently I dont have access to, even though I am the one who created them. I found an account named "Unknown Account (S-1-5-21......) that I am sure came from a user account that I had in a different incarnation of Windows Vista, and since have reinstalled. So I know where the SID came from, but because of that I am denied access to the files. When I try to remove that account, I am told that I cannot remove that account because of inherited permissions and I should disable inheriting permissions. When I untick that option, I am told that NO ONE will be able to access the files. When I go up one level, where the permissions are supposedly inherited from, that account isnt listed. What the helll? I want access to my files! What do I do?

Hi,
Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet Forum.
According to your description, for further troubleshooting, please help to confirm the following items.
1.     Is this issue occurring on your wife's computer during the process of copying files or on your own computer while running Windows Vista? Where are these files located?
2.     Does the current user belong to a group of administrators or a group of standard users?
3.     As you mentioned above that your external hard drive is about to die, it may be related to hardware defect. So could you please describe the symptoms in details?
By the way, I would like to suggest that you try to take ownership of these files then see if you can access them.
If you can’t access the external disk totally, try to take ownership of the hard drive:
1)     Click Start –> All Programs ->Accessories
2)     Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue
3)     Type: takeown /f filepath (Replace filepath with the location of your drive, example d:\)
4)     Press Enter, you will be prompted with completed successfully message.
5)     Type: icacls filepath /grant yourusername:f (Replace filepath with the location of your drive, and yourusername with your profile name)
6)     Press Enter, you will be prompted with completed successfully message.
7)     Then try to delete files in this drive and see if it works.
If it is just due to specific files and folders, try to take ownership of these files and folders:

Meanwhile, I noticed that an unknown account (S-1-5-21......) is kept on your computer. You may need to delete this account in registry first.
1)   Press Ctrl + R to run regedit, then press Enter.
2)   Locate to this item: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
3)   Delete the registry of this unknown account.
Note: Remember to back registry before any modification.
Hope this helps. Thanks.

  • I have converted a pdf to word. How can I access the Word file from my online account?

I have converted a pdf to word. How can I access the Word file from my online account? When it says 'download the converted file' I choose a location on my PC and click, but nothing happens. It seems that it can only save the converted file to my online account. I went to my online account but I see no way to look for the file

    Hey Fabrizio,
You might need to sign up at "https://cloud.acrobat.com/exportpdf" using your Adobe ID credentials to convert your PDF file to Word.
Do you get the 'download' prompt?
Also, you can find the converted files by clicking at the 'Files' tab.
Please try the same using a different browser and check.
    Hope to hear from you.

  • Can't access some shared files

I have a computer here where the user can't access some shared files.  From the machine she normally uses, the folders are greyed out.  I've checked all the permissions, and everything is in order.  She was even able to access the folder from a different Mac.  The mac is fully patched, running OS 10.6.8.

    More Info:
After trying multiple things, I have more info to solve the problem. 2 other computers (one is another iBook and the other is a PC) in the house, access the hard drive as advertised with no problems. The only thing that has changed on my computer recently is the replacement of a 1G iPhone with an iPhone 3Gs. This phone did some weird things when syncing, specifically with our photo programs. It locked up Nikon transfer and iPhoto was working strangely. I felt the best way to alleviate those 2 problems was to shut down my computer, and restart. This is when I encountered the problem with accessing the TC. Things are also a little bit more complicated because I use the TC as the storage medium for both iTunes Library and iPhoto Library, both of which I can't access given the current problem.

  • What is going on?  I can't access my iPhoto files from any other programs.  It just says "Open iPhoto to see photos from your iPhoto Library in this list", but that doesn't work.  What changed?

All of a sudden I can't access my iPhoto files from any other programs (ie Photoshop, facebook etc.).  It just gives me this message below.  What the **** changed?  This wasn't happening yesterday.

    1 - close iPhoto.
2 - go to your Pictures folder and open the iPhoto Library package as shown below:
3 - locate a file named AlbumData.xml and move it to the Desktop.
    4 - launch iPhoto.
5 - relaunch the other programs and try the media browser again.

  • InDesign CS5 (Mac OS 10.6) can not open its own file

I need guidance to open an artwork file that in one hour I have to send to the print shop. InDesign refuses to open its own file.
    Any clue? Adobe, please help.

Re: InDesign CS5 (Mac OS 10.6) can not open its own file
    Bob and Peter
Thank your for helping us out. It was really necessary to ask a coworker to open the file and export it in InDesign markup language.
Three hours later than expected, but it's done!
We are stuck here. I'm a Master Collection user of CS5, using only Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Bridge and Acrobat Pro. (I don't know why I bought the Master's). My coleague former Window user, got a Mac in May and downloaded the trial version of Design Studio Standard Collection of CS5.5. Before expiring, we purchased its license and filled it in the active trial version.
A couple of months ago we noticed that were missed Plug Ins on his version and contacted Adobe who instructed us to download the whole files again. We never did because it is a pain to get rid of the missing parts of a pre installed trial version etc.
I will ask Adobe to send a CD disk for his version.

    Junia

Hoe can I access my IPhoto files in Bridge in Photoshop?

This is not a photography question.  It is an application specific question,  Please post in the Photoshop forum.
Remember, you are not addressing Adobe here in the user forums.  You are requesting help from volunteers users just like you who give their time free of charge. No one has any obligation to answer your questions.
You have to export your images out of iPhoto first.

  • Can I access time capsule file without using imac

can I access time capsule file without using imac

From a time machine backup? No. If you mean just a regular file stored on there? Not directly. There are a couple of apps out there where you can indirectly get to a file but it's a pain. If you have need of accessing a file both from the mac and the iPad then I suggest DropBox. You get 2GB free and it's a good way to share information between machines and devices.

I can't access my cPanel or just the website itself.  I can't access the admin panel for the Wordpress workings either.
And it all worked fine until I updated to Lion.
Any help you can provider would be very helpful.  My host is claiming they can access it fine so they aren't able to help.  They verified my IP isn't blocked on their end.
And I can access it straight away in Safari.Do you have any anti-virus or third party programs, especially secrity related installed?
Can you access any other sites you regularly go to?
Is your Wordpress program up to date to be compatable with Lion (check developer's site)

    Hi Sharon2000,
I think you could try the Database.NewPassword Method (DAO) in the VBScript file, and you could get more information about it from the link below:

  • How can I get permission to access my own files?

I recently got a new Mac Pro, and I used a Time Machine backup to migrate my data.  Then I discovered that Time Machine doesn't actually back up everything; it leaves out all the "Build" folders in all of my Xcode projects for some reason.  I transferred all those folders manually, but I couldn't help but wonder what else Time Machine was omitting.  So I decided that before I permanently retire my old computer (a seven year old iMac), I'd make a full backup of all its data onto BD-Roms.  This it turning out to be quite difficult.
First I tried using Target Disk Mode and running Disk Utility on a second computer to create a disk image.  But after about 15 hours, it wasn't even a third of the way done, so I cancelled that.  Then I tried connecting an external drive to my old computer and just dragging all the files onto it, which seemed to be working at first, but then after a couple hours, it said something like, "You don't have permission to access the Keychain App," and it stopped transferring.  So I tried again, but I omitted the Applications folder, since that's where the Keychain app is.  Then, after a couple more hours, it said something like, "You don't have permission to access some other file."
Is there any way I can disable this permissions business?  I tried going to "get info" and giving everyone read and write privileges, but it didn't make any difference.  I wouldn't even mind just skipping the files with permission issues, but the problem is that whenever it gets to an "unpermitted" file, it just completely bails out of the whole transfer and then I have to start all over again.  Is there at least a way to make it just skip those files and go on with the transfer?

Not in your case. System-level folders cannot be backed up by drag-copying; just drag your home folder to the external drive.

  • Can't access Time Capsule files

    Here is the situation:
I've owned a TC for about a year now with no previous problems. Now I can't access the files even though the internet is still working fine and TC reports no problems. Until today, the TC icon would show up on my desk top and would link right to the files. Now, no icon, but when I go to finder the access icon is there. When I click on it, it asks me to verify my password to connect to the server, then goes to the next screen where it asks me to select the volumes to mount. There is only 1 choice here; however, if I choose it the computer freezes up on me with the spinning rainbow and the only way to stop is a hard shut down. When I first set up the TC, I don't remember having to go through this step, but now I don't seem to have any other options. I tried using Airport Utility to have the TC to restore to factory settings to no avail. Also, tried unplugging everything for a while a starting that way, but that didn't work either.
Any Help would be greatly appreciated!
