My PC died and in turn so did my main iTunes library.  My iPhone was synced to the library that is gone.  Now when I try to connect to another library, it tells me the phone must be wiped clean before I can manage music with new library.  Any way around that?  I don't want to lose the music that is on my phone.  I am looking for a way to tell the phone to "forget" the old library and let me start working with a new library.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.
Use your backup copy of your computer to put everything on the new one.
It sounds like you have failed to do this, which is not good at all.
You will have to transfer your itunes purchases from your iphone.  Authorize your computer for your itunes account
About iTunes Store authorization and deauthorization
Open itunes, plug in iphone, do NOT sync, click File>Transfer Purchases
When you do sync you will lose your pics ( photo library - synced from your old computer), your itunes content ( music, apps, videos, etc) , your contacts and your calendars.  So do NOT sync yet.  This is why a backup copy is so important.
Enter one unique contact and calendar entry on your computer.
When you first sync, you should get the option to merger the data.  Choose it.
If you want your pics, then you will need to e-mail them to yourself before you sync.  They will not be of the original quality as they are reduced when synced to iphone.
When all is as goos as it can be, then backup your computer, and always maintain the backup.

Hard drives do not appear in the application. Use File>New Library.

  • Can't Create a NEW LIBRARY

I'm trying to create a new library to do some maintenance on certain files (I'll spare you the details as to WHY).
I can't figure out how to create a new library.
I've tried holding the SHIFT key when starting iTunes per the instructions here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iTunesWin/8.0/en/15502.html
    and here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1589
No matter how I start iTunes I get the same result - it just opens normally without the desired dialog box asking if I want to create a new library. I've tried starting it from the desktop icon, the start menu (both pinned and via "All Programs > iTunes"). I've tried using both the mouse and the keyboard (Enter).
Is this some bug I've run into or am I just not trying it during the right phase of the moon. Sometimes iTunes is just so hard to use and figure out! (Who'd ever have thought you'd have to hold SHIFT when launching? It should just be File > New Library or something that is at least VISIBLE.)

as you are using itunes on XP, there is a much more simple way
Go to My Docs > My music
rename itunes to itunes.old or something. Create new folder called itunes.
Start itunes, and you'll have a new library. once finished, reverse the above

  • Can I remove a new library and go back to using my original library?

Our hard drive crashed and we now have a new hard drive on our original computer.  I downloaded iTunes on this new system and created a new library.  I didn't realize when I created a new one, that you could only have one and I'd have to sync it all again.  A pop up came up stating that I could erase all things on my iPod and sync with the new library.  I don't want to do that, I just want my original library to work. I did make some new purchases on this new library as well and want them to be in my original library.  How can I get rid of this "new" library and get my original one on this new system in our computer.  I don't want to lose all that I have saved.  Thanks so much.

The shuffle is not a backup device.
Was the media actually moved from the old computer to the new computer? If not, how did you magically make the content appear on the new system?
Use the backup of the old computer to put all the content on the new computer.

  • Library on PC was restored, how can I make a new library?

My PC was restored as it had unrecoverable viruses and spyware etc on it. Im wanting to make a new library on my laptop for my iPhone - i dont mind about all the music not going to my laptop, i know this cant happen (i would like all the present things on my iPhone to stay though). But id still like to be able to add music and stuff to my iPhone and be able to sync it. Any help is much apprectiated.

Depending on what you have selected under the various tabs for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes on your restored PC, nothing else on your iPhone will be touched or lost.
iTunes includes an option to transfer iTunes content from an iPod or iPhone that was purchased from the iTunes store, but this is for iTunes content that was purchased from the iTunes store only.
First you need to re-authorize your computer with your iTunes account with iTunes. After doing so, with your iPhone connected and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone.
If any 3rd party apps do not transfer from your iPhone to your iTunes library, you can re-download the apps with iTunes on your computer and you won't be charged again for a purchased app as long as you use the same iTunes account to re-download the app that was used to purchase the app originally.
Regarding any photos that were transferred from your computer to your iPhone, the transfer process for these photos is a one way transfer process only - from your computer to your iPhone. If the photos that were stored on your computer were not included with your computer's backup, there are 3rd party apps available that provide for transferring these photos from your iPhone to your computer, but the original resolution of these photos will be lost. Photos transferred from your computer to your iPhone are optimized for viewing on your iPhone as part of the iTunes sync process, so the original resolution of these photos are reduced on your iPhone.
Such a 3rd party app also provides for transferring iTunes content from your iPhone to your computer that was not purchased from the iTunes store, but these apps are not supported by Apple.
If you are syncing contact info with a supported application on your computer and you did not include this data with your computer's backup, before syncing contact info with the supported application on your computer, enter one unique contact in the supported application on your computer. Make this contact up if needed, which can be deleted later. This will provide a merge prompt when syncing contact info, which you want to select. The same applies to syncing calendar events if you have Outlook 2003 or 2007 available and you are syncing calendar events with Outlook on your computer.

  • Number of times you can sync to a new library?

My work computer was stolen this week for the second time and I'm wary of syncing my ishuffle to my home computer again because I'm sure the last time it warned me that you could only change the library it was associated to a specific number of times.
Since I know I've changed it at least 3 times, I'm concerned I won't have enough left to convert to my home computer temporarily until a new work one is delivered and then connect it to the new work one (my home computer doesn't have enough room to store any music on it, so I can't use it as a permament dock for all my music), this restricts the number of times I could swap it over.
So does anyone know the exact number of times you can switch between libraries?
And what happens after that - does your ishuffle stop working completely?
Also - if I connect it to my home computer to charge it temporarily, will this erase any songs in it (my home computer has been authorised to play the music I've purchased but there are other songs I've ripped from my CDs)?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

    There is NO limit.

    NOTHING.

In Settings UNcheck "Open iTunes when this iPod is connected" (don't forget to click "apply"). The NEXT time you connect the shuffle just to charge it. iTunes will NOT be involved (unless, of course, it's already running...).
Thanks for any help you can offer.

  • How can I create a new library in iTunes 12?

This is for the newest iTunes: 12.0.1.26 for the OSX version 10.9.5--- the other methods I found online don't work. Thanks!

  • How can I create a new Music Library?

Had to buy new laptop which of course has Vista. The old unit was acting up(I think Windows XP was corrupt), so I saved my Library Files but it looks like the old machine only saved portions not the whole Library. I had approx. 13,000 tunes (35GB) in the LIbrary and all that was saved seems to be 319 tunes. I have all the music on an external HD and only the Library was on the laptop. My question is, how can I create a new Library from the external HD music? Is there a way or am I SOL? Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated.

You need the entire libary on the external, not just media.

Once you get a complete iTunes folder on the external drive, start iTunes with the option/alt key held down and select the iTunes Library.itl file on the external drive.  You will also need to do this with your main computer or the libraries will become unsynchronized.
Alternatively you can make a separate library using the same media on the second computer. Start as you have been doing, let iTunes create a new, blank library file which will be on hte internal drive, set the media folder location in preferences to be the one on the external drive, then add the files to the new iTunes library. Unless you are a super-organized individual, or you don't care if your libraries do not have the same content, you are better off using a single library file that is on the external, not setting up separate library files.

  • Oops: trying to create new library, but I tossed the library.xml file

No, it's not in the trash.
I just created my master library on an external HDD. I gutted my laptop iTunes file, wanting to start over. Now I can't create a new library b/c the library.xml file is missing.
I know I can copy the one from my master library, but I don't want that data; I want to start over, otherwise when I add the music files to my new library, I'll have duplicates of everything and will have to spend another several hours cleaning it up, and I'll probably screw that up.
So: I need either a new library.xml file; OR a way to take the other .xml file and tell iTunes not to add or do anything to it even though I'm adding all my content.
    easy? maybe. tell me

Ringtones library is now called Tones.  If you don't see Tones under the Library, go to iTunes menu EDIT>Preferences>check the Tones box under General tab, sources then click ok.

  • New Library, Existing files, & iTunes Match

I had a hard drive die but I have all of my music files backed up to a NAS. I use iTunes Match. My problem is now that I have a new installation of iTunes on the new hard drive, I don't have a library file anymore. I have an old backup of that file, but unfortunately, the hard drive was dead for a quite a while before I knew it, so it's pretty dated. On the new installation of iTunes, my cloud library shows up once I turn on Match, but it of course doesn't know that I have all (or most) of the music on the NAS, so it wants to play all of the music from the cloud instead of the local drive.
Is there any way to make the library file on the computer know the physical files are already present? Can I start a new library, add these files to it, and then turn on match? Is my only recourse to re-download my entire 20,000 song library?
I'm trying to make my cloud library, with all of my play history, remain intact and for that computer to point to the files on the NAS so it plays them locally instead of from the cloud.

What is the iCloud Status of the tracks?
In iTunes switch to Song view and pull down View > View Options then select "iCloud Status" and close the small window. Post the status here.

  • Can't find original iTunes library...

I have two iPods (both Nanos - one 6th generation and one 1st generation) and recently used method three on this page (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1495) to create a second iTunes library for my second device. I followed directions to a tee and now can only find the new library. Any advice? Like many of you, I'm sure, my original iTunes library contains tons of paid-for downloaded songs which I would hate to lose. I wish I were more tech-savvy!!! Help!

How did you save this file? iTunes doesn't actually have a save file feature so I am not sure what you did.

  • How can I get my new phone to sync with iTunes

My husband got a new iPhone and we share a computer, we figured out how to create a new library but the new library does not recognize the phone in order to sync it.  How can we get the new library to sync with his phone?

Thanks for you suggestion roaminggnome. I tried typing in 13019 like you said and it gave me a few options to try and fix it but none of them worked (of course). I fiddled around with it for a while some more on my own and some how got it to work again, lol. Thanks again though for offering a solution.

  • Can you Import  albums/matadata from a vault to a new library ?

After using ver3.01 for a few weeks and getting comfortable with it, I converted & upgraded several older managed libraries. All went well except for the last one. There must be some corrupted images somewhere in that 200Gig Library, for all the horror stories I read about on this forum materialized - The endless hours, the spinning beach ball, the crashes etc.
Since I had backed up this Library with vaults ( I was not able to rebuild from the vault either ), I knew that by RIght Clicking on the Vault and "show package content" I could access & rescue the projects individually. That worked and here I come to the part I could not successfully complete -import an existing album to a new library.
Where I had both projects and albums residing inside a folder - I could move the projects to a new Library, but not the Albums. Is there a way to do that ?

I would say no. I have an Ipad2 with the connection kit. A recent Sony camera which works fine in imovie for my 27" imac, but nothing with the Ipad. Only thing that it finds are pictures that can be made with the same video camera. Apple wrote a note aboit probkmes with importing, but i'm very disappointed with what i have right now.

    Welcome to the discussions,
as already mentioned, use File->transfer purchases to copy your apps and bought media to your computer, or right click on the device in the device list and choose "transfer purchases"
To make sure that iTunes can contact the Apple server, check your security settings as well: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3125
