I can't burn in iDVD either

Until I upgraded to iLife08, I never had a problem burning DVD's. Now I have made my first iDVD project. I exported a slideshow from iPhoto using "share, send to iDVD". Once exported (it took some time), I effectively added it to an iDVD project. Using a DVD+R 4.7GB CD, I selected the "burn" button. After 20 minutes of rendering, I receive this error message "error during rendering / coding", which ends the burn process. I have disabled the sleep function and deleted encoded assets. I still get the same error message. Help!

It doesn't not apply as I'm not adding movies.
But I could make it work.
Three steps:
1) re apply the theme
2) click on the edit drop zones button
3) click on small gray sound icon inside the menu button (the left button at bottom)

  • TA26404 Can I burn an iDVD on a usb and watch it on a regular computer?

I needed to make a movie for school and it came out perfect. Can I burn it onto a USB and watch it on a regular computer?

No, you can burn it to a flash drive.  Burn it to a DVD disk and any computer that can play DVD videos will be able to play your DVD.
Follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality final product:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
What do you mean by a "regular" computer?  What are you using to create the iDVD project, an irregulary computer?

  • What is a superdrive? I can't burn my iDVD to a disc.

I created an iDVD but it says I can't burn it to a disc. I tried to burn it on iMovie but I couldn't because I don't have a superdrive. What is a superdrive? Is it something I have to buy? If so, where can I buy it?

    In reply to Rollers,
Yep! As long as it is a Firewire drive you will have no issues. It was only the older versions of iDVD that would not work with external drives, however, as you said you have a new Macbook I'd assume that would include iLife05 or 06, both of which are compatible with external drives. The LaCie drive you mentioned is a good drive.
This is a deal on the LaCie burner you mentioned that comes with Toast Titanium 7. It's a great deal!

  • I can't burn my iDVD project to a DVD

After creating my project the burn button does not respond. I had a newer version of iDVD (7.0.3) so I installed on my iMac. After installing all the updates I opened the iDVD program. I then got this message on the screen. "Your Macintosh does not have a supported superdrive. Please note that while you will be able to work with iDVD projects you will not be able to burn a DVD disc." Can anyone direct me to a solution to this problem?

I believe that you will need to save it from iDVD to a disc image. Then you could write that image to an external DVD writer via Disk Utility. You probably should verify this in the iDVD discussion area.

  • Can't burn my IDVD project on a DVD or the desktop

    Hello,
I made a project with IDVD and now I want to burn it on a DVD, but this is not working.
First it seems to work, but then when he is at the stage to burn the movies and slideshows. IDVD gives the error with encoding/ decoding. I tried it several times but I get all the time the same error.
I tried to copy my file on the desktop, but I got the same problem.
    Could anybody please help me?!
    Thanks!
    Monique

What version of iMovie? iMovie '08 or iMovie HD (v. 6)?
What brand and format DVD? You should use DVD-R. Verbatim works perfectly for me. Memorex and TDK have bad track records here...
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save as Disc Image...
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. If you hold your mouse cursor over the pop-up it says: "Select a slower speed to work around burn failures," so select 4x or slower for best results. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

  • Can't burn a iDVD movie I created.

Created a movie in iMovie, sent it to iDVD and set up chapters etc. Viewed the whole movie in the iDVD preview and there were no problems, buttons work great everything works fine. Send it to burn the DVD, it goes through setting up the menu, compressing the file, etc. Once it starts to actually burn the DVD, it spits it out and the following message comes up:
The recording device reported the media error: Power calibration area error. (0x73, 0x03.)
So I have iDVD create an image file of the movie. Try burning that in Toast and it spits the DVD out and gives the following message:
    The drive reported an error:
    Sense Key = Medium Error
    Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03
So now I try burning the DVD with Disk Utility. Get the following message:
Unable to burn "disk 2" - The device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media.
All of these were tried using both TDK and Verbatim media.
Anyone have any ideas? Thanks, john

Yes the blanks blanks are the correct media. The drag is... Apple replaced the SuperDrive in November 2006 and this is the first time I've tried to burn something from iDVD. Because it's no longer on warranty, I'm sure they'll make me buy a new SuperDrive.

  • Can't burn from iDVD or disk utility?

Is my iMac just getting old or am I missing something?
In the past I have had no trouble burning DVd's from a disk image (and occasionally stragight from iDVD for that matter. Now I am getting error messages on almost every try.
I have saved my dvdproj to an disk image (.img file) and tried to burn a DVD from disk utility. This works for me on every other project I have done in the past. I was able to burn one DVD and then every time after I get the message "device drained its buffer... underrun protection" and it ejects my DVD without burning anything.
I have tried saving the entire project as a QT file, instead of exporting it from iMovie to iDVD so that it would be a "smaller" project (I'm down to 1.1 GB). I also have plenty of space on my iMAC (35 GB).
I need to burn 15 copies of this (16 minute) DVD... by Friday. I am pulling my hair out! Any suggestions? I would really appreciate some help.

    Try this:
Repair Permissions from apple's disc utilities.
Drag and drop this file to the trash:
    com.apple.iDvd.plist
    Empty the trash.
    Restart the computer.
Then i'd like you to make a disc image from the file menu w/in iDVD6.

Post back when you get this far.... because I'll also will ask you to change medias if you are not currently using Verbatim or Maxell DVD-R.

  • I can't burn a CD anymore...

Help! I can't burn a CD anymore. I try it in finder and get a can't communicate error...in iTunes...same thing...in iPhoto, (you guessed it...same thing)
I can read my created CD's just fine with no problems (those I have created as well as those from Apple [iLife 6.0, system DVD's that came with it etc.]). I have fixed permissions, erased and reinstalled 10.4 that came with my mini, and still have this problem.
The finder acknowledges a blank CD, but won't write to it...iTunes same thing...iPhoto the same thing.
Burner need replaced, or is it an OS problem? CD's bad (have sucessfully written to 35 of the 50 in the spindle Memorex CD-R Music)?
    Mac Mini 1.33 G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

The following is from the Mac Help:
    I can't burn a CD or DVD
If you can't burn files on a recordable disc, see if the surface of the disc is smeared or dirty. Clean the disc with a soft, damp cloth and try again. If the disc is scratched, try another disc.
Try using a disc made for a slower recording speed, such as 2x or 4x instead of 8x.
If you still can't burn a disc, either you don't have an optical drive that can record discs, or your disc may already have files on it and can't be used again.
Check to see what type of disc you have. If your disc is CD-R or DVD-R, you can't erase files contained on it or burn more data on the disc. If the disc is rewritable, you need to erase the disc with Disk Utility before you can record on it again. For more information, open Disk Utility, (in the /Applications/Utilities folder), choose Help>Disk Utility Help, and search for "erasing discs."
To see if an optical drive can burn discs:
Open System Profiler, located in /Applications/Utilities.
Select Disc Burning in the Hardware list.
If more than disc drive is connected to your computer, select the one you want to use from the list of drives.
Look at the entries for "CD-Write" and "DVD-Write."
If the entry contains "-R," your computer can write to a CD-R or DVD-R only once. If the entry contains "-RW," your computer can erase a CD-RW or DVD-RW and write to it again.
If you are using an application such as iDVD to create a custom disc, check the application's help for more information and instructions.
If you are trying to perform multisession burning (burning data to a disc in more than one session until the disc is full), you must use Disk Utility. See Disk Utility Help for more information.
If none of the above helps, I suggest you take your Mac in for service.

  • How can I add new content in iDVD to a DVD-RW disc which has ample remaining free space? After preparing the new video for burning and clicking on Burn to iDVD, I get a window saying the disc's already recorded and that I can either Erase or Eject.

How can I add new content in iDVD to a DVD-RW disc with a video previously successfully recorded on it? (The disc has ample remaining free space.)
After preparing the new video for burning and clicking in the File menu on Burn to iDVD, I get a window saying the disc's already recorded and that I can either Erase or Eject. My assumption has been that iDVD would automatically find the free space and continue with the new recording from there. I'd be grateful if anyone can shine light on this.

There are, but not with a DVD written as a movie disk. It must be closed when completed, or it doesn't work.
Apple's built in Burn utility also automatically closes any data CD, DVD or Blu-ray disk you burn. Doesn't matter how much space is unused, you can't use it. You'd have to use a more advanced disk creation app, such as Toast Titanium. I then have the option of choosing to write the data as a session:
I can keep doing this until the disk is full. If I've written five sessions to the disk, when I put it in the drive, five CD/DVD icons will appear on the desktop since the OS will treat each session as if they are separate physical disks. At any point you choose Write Disk when writing a group of data, that means you're closing the disk, and again can't add anything after that. So if I had written two sessions, and the third was Write Disk, it's over. I can't put anything else on that disk.

Free solutions are the best, although if I have to pay I will, I would prefer to not have to buy an external burner if possible and already know that is an option so please don't give me that answer... thank you for any help you can give

Unless your iMac is still covered by AppleCare, get an external DVD burner.
You can get perfectly good ones from Amazon for less than $40.

Sounds like the CD drive died. Luckily they cost next to nothing to replace. Or get an external LaCie instead. I have a dual G4 1.25 and the CD drive was always so anemic I use a LaCie Porsche with it.

There is no proper substitute for iDVD.
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac?

    UPDATE & ADDENDUM:
But even though you can still buy iLife 11 that includes iDVD 7 from Amazon, Apple now make it difficult to install:
Poster jhb21939 posted this in another thread:
“when I attempted to load iDVD into a new iMac. A notice came up on the screen stating that the 'Authorisation Licence' had expired on 25 March this year (2012).
I contacted the Apple support team and eventually, I was told that the Licence had been withdrawn and could no longer be used.”
In other words Apple are now so adamant that we don’t use iDVD that they have tried to make it impossible to install.
In response, Old Toad posted this solution:
“You can still use it one all of your Macs.  If you get an invalid certificate message just set your Mac's clock to sometime before early 2011 and run the installer.  After you're done reset the time back to the correct time.” He added this comment:
“It began after iDVD and iWeb were discontued and they were dropped from the Apple Store. All I can think of is the certificate was set to expire after a certain time period after the intitial iLife disc was released.
I've been able to use the installer even without setting back the date.  I just clicked on the Continue button and it would work as expected.  For some it would not continue unless the date was set back.”
The latest anorexic iMacs just announced do not even include a CD drive! Proof positive that Apple virtually prohibit the use of DVDs - although the newly announced Mac Minis do include a Superdrive.
Yet, they still include iMovie! Heaven alone knows or understands what you are supposed to do with your newly edited masterpiece - except make a low quality version for YouTube?
