Can't close documents in Preview or TextEdit

I have a simple problem which I just cannot find any discussion of how to fix. In both TextEdit and Preview (classic culprits on Lion), I have documents I can't close.
When I click the close button it waits for a few seconds then does nothing. Same for menu commands. If I quit and reopen, the app opens with those windows. If I restart, the app still has those windows. If I "Duplicate" a file, not only can I then not close that file either, but I also can't "Save" the file (to give it it's own name).
I have several document open now in Preview which are basically permanent fixtures of the app.
I imagine the version store is corrupt. Can I delete it? where is it?

Is it save to hunt down the versions of those files and delete those? Or is there only one, huge versions file for the whole drive?
It is a critical operation - I would only attempt it if you do not know your System well. I suspect one of the Frameworks in /Library/Frameworks might be corrupt, that can happen, if you install some app that installs its own Frameworks, and accidentally installs an incompatible version. So what you would have to do is to compare the backup of the /Library/Frameworks folder with your current Frameworks and try to spot a difference and then to restore that different file. You need to quit all Applications while you do that, and still you would risk to cut the branch that you are sitting on - this operation is best be done from a second machine, so as not to change the system while it is running. It would be safer to reinstall Lion by booting into the recovery HD.
Before you take any drastic measures, perhaps another test: Do you have a second account on your system? Then it would be a good idea to check if "Preview" and "Textedit" show the same buggy behaviour when started from another account. If they work fine, then the problem must be caused by something in your user library and not in the system library.
Also you could try to boot into "Safe Mode". This will turn off start up items and third party extensions, that may cause problems.
If the problem occurs in all these tests, then I would opt for a reinstall.

I can't close inactive apps - double tap home won't work

I know how to close apps on my ipod, it just won't work. When I double tap the home button, nothing happens - I can't get to that screen that lets me close the apps. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Did a bit more research - I guess its just normal as the 2g doesn't support multitasking so there are no apps running in the background. Thanks IIIaass for the info about 2g vs 3g!

On my iPhone 4S, I can not close my apps.

I've tried this several times and nothing has happened. I double tap the home button, all open apps are there, I slide them up to close them and then I restart/reboot my iPhone. Once it starts again, I go into my phone and check to see if they have closed and alas, nothing is closed everything is there!
Is there anything else I can do to close my apps?

Why are you restarting your device at all? Double-tapping the Home key and sliding up on the thumbnails should result in them closing. If you slide up on all of them, tap the Home key once again to go back to the normal Home screen, and then double-tap the Home key again, are you seeing any open apps?

before the problems start.. i made up 1 user account ..through mail > preferences > account (just as a test) ..after i finished..i got error ..i can't close the message/new form...the /new form is

when i press cancel it won't close that form & also when i want to restart..the message said "you must close mail app"

Can I produce an app preview with my Mac Mini and my iPad 2?

I want to produce an app preview with my Mac Mini (~2009), which is running Yosemite, and my iPad 2, which is running iOS 8. Is this possible, even though the iPad 2 doesn't have a lightning connector? If it is, what are the steps to do this? I am not tech-illiterate, but I'm new to Mac.

Can't close docs in preview; command + W not working

I created two "New from clipboard" images in Preview. I have no red button in the window to close them, but that might be my theme - I do have a gray button with an X. However, it doesn't work. Command + W also does not close them. I have cleared out my recent menu. I have quit and restarted preview, and quit and rebooted the computer.
Every time I open Preview these images open. I cannot save them directly as documents; I tried duplicating one in order to save it, hoping somehow that would make closing an option, but all it did was create a third image for Preview to irritatingly reopen. Images I've opened from existing documents do not behave this way and can be closed. Preview seems slowed down by this, since other commands don't work (Open, Save) and getting menus to appear is very slow.
This is my work computer and these images are getting in the way. Can someone help me out? Many thanks in advance!

Needless to say, you have landed in a very bizarre place.
Others might have better suggestions, but if this were happening to me, I think I would try to clear out the "Saved state" info for Preview. Here are some instructions:

I can't close windows in Preview

There are three PDFs which are open in Preview that I cannot close, save or do anything with.
They started off life as Mail downloads, but the emails and the original attachments they came from have long since been deleted. The PDFs that won't die have the same name as those original files, except they appear to be copies, the whole name is in brackets and this is prefixed with Untitled. It's like the computer has made a phantom back-up file that can't be traced to anywhere. I've emptied all sorts of Library files to try to get rid of them, emptied recent history, restarted Previes and the Mac. They don't show up in Spotlight.
Any idea how I can close and delete these?

I don't have a problem closing Preview, I can do this just with Command Q. The problem is three particular PDFs (as described above) which keep reopening each time I open Preview. I cannot close those PDFs, they keep coming back despite me emptying every Preview and Mail related folder I can find!

Can't close open apps.

I hit the "Home" button twice. With the first hit I got a "Search" keyboard (don't know if that's normal), with the second hit the app icons reappeared. When I held down the Mail icon all the icons wiggled, but even though several were open no minus signs appeared. My inbox is stuck on June 24th -- can anyone tell me how to kick-start this mess? Thank you.

Press back until you exit the app, if you press the virtual key on the right it should show you the apps that you have been using > swipe from left to right or right to left to close them

I can't close the apps on my iPad 2 now that I have updated to IOS 7.

Any suggestions on how to close them. This is just the first of numerous problems I am having with IOS 7.

I'm using a 2011 Macbook Air running Lion 10.7.2. Here is my problem:
I open a group of photos using Preview. I right click one and select "open in new window". It opens. I decide to close said window by clicking the red X button. Nothing happens. I click the red X button of the main preview window with the pane of thumbnails on the side. It closes immediately. I click on the red X of the other window again. Still nothing. I go to Preview>Quit Preview. I get 10-20 seconds of pinwheel spinning. Finally, it closes.
Any ideas?
I've also noticed Lion hanging sometimes, especially when booting up. Maybe theyre related.

Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library". The go to Preferences/com.apple.Preview.plist. Delete this file and relaunch Preview.
I doubt the issue is related to the hang booting up, unless Preview is auto-launching on startup.

Settings > General > Acessibility > Guided Access. Enter the app, and triple click the home button. Just tap Guided Access and it's locked in the app. You can even draw on areas of the screen that you don't want them to tap. It's amazing, isn't it ?
