I can't close firefox nor restart my mac ibook G4 OS10.5.8 to troubleshhoot.

When firefox opens it calls for Google, but does not connect or open anything. It's done this for several days...when I tried to troubleshoot, I can't even close Firefox at all, so I can't restart. I get a message that says Firefox is not responding

Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac. There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox
If you prefer, you can get the latest version of Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html

• After opening a certain website, I can't close firefox anymore

I opened a website in google and I got a tiny webpage saying: This page on http://protectremovevirusxpnow.com says: Windows Security has found critical process activity on your system and will perform fast scan of system files. The only button you can press is OK. I have no windows running on my MAC. Also the tabs are gone, except the tab Firefox. But you can't close firefox. The only thing I can do is to shutdown the whole computer by the powerbutton. What can I do?
Thanks,

Hi sierui,
I have the same problem. Don't know what to do though so not entirely helpful there! But I found the same issue on this thread - https://support.mozilla.com/is/questions/811477 - although none of the answers are particularly useful for mac users, there might be a slight chance that someone will resolve the problem in the near future.
Also, after rebooting my mac, it seems the pop up window with the message 'Windows Security has found ........' didn't pop again.

• I have the latest version but I am continually told that Firefox is running but not responding and that I need to close Firefox or restart my computer to clear the problem. Why is this happening?

I can't download Firefox 4 because my Mac says I "dont' have sufficient priviledges", and I'm the Administrator!

Click applications... utilities... disk utilities. select your drive and click "check permissions" and let it run. when this is finished, click on "fix permissions" and let it run.
This should solve your problem.

• Can't close firefox tabs even in safemode. (Windows 7)

I normally run firefox with NoScript and AdBlock. Lately I have been unable to close tabs and after research saw that it was recommended to try safe mode. Safe mode has been working fine for me, but just now I cleared my cache and now I can't close tabs even in safe mode.
Edit: Shortly after posting this question, I tried to open a new tab and firefox froze up. I had to close it via the task manager.

It could be the work of one of your add-ons, or even add / mal-ware.
Look thru your add-ons list and make sure you know what each one is
and what it does. Also, check the programs that are on your computer
'''Windows:''' Start > Control Panel > Uninstall Programs.
'''Mac:''' Open the "Applications" folder
'''Linux:'''

* Xfce: Applications Menu category sections
* options depends on the package manager and the desktop environment
Go thru the list. If you find something that you don't
know what it is, use a web search.

• After closing firefox, try to re-open browser, error message ''firefox is running, you must either close firefox or restart computer'', but my browser is NOT open!?!

The only way to be able to open my browser again is to restart my computer.

*Wait a bit longer before reopening Firefox to give Firefox more time to close completely.
*Use "Firefox/File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit") to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the title bar.

• Awesome: Can't close Firefox's addons window

As the title says. It popped up after installing adblock, and there's no button to close it. Restarting Firefox just makes it pop up again.
What should I do?

Read man awesome, like the menu entry and all the help docs tell you to.
If you do that, you'll find that the default keybind to close a window is Mod + Shift + C.
You'll also find the key combos for many other useful functions.
Funny, I've skimmed awesome's man page a few times and missed that one. Thanks!

• After downloading Firefox 9.01 can't put Firefox into dock on Mac

Firefox automatically updated while I was using the browser and disappeared from the dock on my iMac. Since then I trashed Firefox, redownloaded and re-installed it but will still not go into the dock. I've restarted my Mac and redid everything again, still no Firefox in dock. Very inconvient to have to make an alias and put it on the desktop for fast access instead of using the dock.

Make sure that Firefox gets installed properly.
Open the Firefox disk image (DMG) file and drag the Firefox program to the application folder on your hard drive.
You shouldn't double-click the Firefox application to run it from the disk image, but drag it out of the DMG folder instead.
If you can't replace the current Firefox application then first drag the current Firefox application to the Trash.

• Can you make Firefox 4 usable on Mac OS 10.4.11?

I would love to stay up to date with the latest versions of Firefox, however, my computer here at work is a Mac OS 10.4.11. As it stands now, I would need Mac OS X to update to Firefox 4. Anyway you guys can make Firefox 4 compatible with Mac OS 10.4.11? I don't see my company being able to upgrade computers (or operating systems, even though we need to) any time in the near future. Thanks!

There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox

• Firefox suddenly stopped responding. I couldn't close Firefox, then restarted my computer. When I did, Firefox constantly gives "Not Responding"; will not start. I tried reinstall, and am getting a stalled installation. What can I do?

OS: Windows XP
Numerous crashes out of Firefox in recent uses, before this latest catastrophic crash.
Installation is also stalled.
I cannot open any Firefox window and have it find the internet now, so am stuck using Internet Explorer to log in here.
Past crashes have been about once every 18 hours, not including some crashes of Flash roughly every 3-5 days.
Should add that I couldn't kill any Firefox process using the Windows Task Manager, which is a first. And, (re-)install hung for more than an hour now, not proceeding.
Norton scan showing no viruses, and it has the latest definitions. This seems confined to a problem in Firefox.
Trying again to install and get this running, trying to open Firefox again fails, using what I presume was the latest previous install. I can't re-install still.
I did briefly see a program called SysFader trying to run when I was opening the Firefox window (unsuccessfully), but just did a search in my hard drive for a file or folder named SysFader and there are no matches. I don't know if they are related.
Nearly a day later and no apparent progress.

• When I click on Firefox I get a message saying Firefox is already running, that I need to close Firefox or restart my computer and it still will not start, Why?

Firefox was working great until at least 3 persons were on my computer over the weekend. Now, when I want to open Firefox to go to the internet I get a message telling me that it is already running, that I need to close it down and if that doesn't work I should restart my computer. I have done all this, turned the computer off and back on many times, but I still get the same message. I do not know what the other people may have done when they were using my computer.

• Can't close Firefox after eradicating Fake.Trojan virus

Got infected with Fake.Trojan virus today while surfing email via Firefox. Successfully used Malwarebytes to clean up the mess but some carnage remains. On a WIn7 platform.
During infection and since eradication I keep getting this message, "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system."
Tried the following to no avail --
1. Task Manager - The Firefox process doesn't show up.
2. Restarting the PC - Same problem;
3. Uninstalling & Reinstalling - Same problem; says it need to close first.
4. Finding/fixing the Profile - %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ not found.
5. Call to tech support at AVG - They've never seen this. They recommend a full reinstall of Windows (Ugh - don't even know where the disks are!).
Any help welcome. Thanks. -j philly

Thank you for the tip. I had already tried your suggestion but based on it decided to take a closer look. I also did a YouTube lookup using IE.
But my first stop was to run that lengthy ChkDsk program to make sure all was structurally sound after the virus. I also bought the Pro version of Malwarebytes to take security even higher.
I went to YouTube because I was having a hard time finding that profile folder the solution you gave me referenced. Answer that worked for me: Don't use the Start button to find your Profile, use your desktop explorer starting with your Users directory and drill down from there. Learned that here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRUgxlo4U4w&feature=related (Note: The speaker and video quality isn't great but his intent is good and his message had enough helpful content to get me started. Ohers may feel the same way.)
Within the comments section replying to the above-referenced YouTube video, I then found one person who wrote this --
"If your Firefox locks up with this error as the result of a "virus" which also happened to hide all your files and desktop icons, then none of these crap Windows XP 'fixes'on YOUTUBE will work.
In 2012, you will need to install Google Chrome, make it your default browser/import bookmarks etc. Then run Firefox while Chrome is open, and Firefox will suddenly be unlocked! 8-) Amazing!!! Then just disarm Google Chrome and uninstall it, and you will have your Firefox back."
His message wasn't so kind, but I did try his solution and it worked! All appears better.
Thank you again to the community for assistance today and to jscher2000 in particular for taking the time. - j philly
