I can't connect to the internet. I keep getting an 'error in the network preferences pane'

I am having difficulties connecting my 2102 macbook air to the internet using 10.9.1 mavericks. The problem is that when I select the networck in the preferences networks panel, the panel extends down and says
Preferences Error
There was an error in Network perference pane.
my machine keeps serching under the network menu item but it cannot connect to any network. I can connect tho this network no problem using my iphone or through my main computer which has a wired link.
I have tried an apple hardware test which showed up as having no problems.
What should I do?

Some users with various Wi-Fi problems have reported that they were given the following instructions by Apple Support, sometimes with success. After completing the procedure, you'll have to recreate all your settings in the Networkpreference pane. Make sure you know how to do that before you begin. Taking screenshots of the preference pane may be helpful.
Step 1
Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "SystemConfiguration" selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator password. Reboot and recreate the network settings.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
Step 2
Reset the System Management Controller.
Step 3
Reset the PRAM.

Upgrading to xcode and can't connect to the network

Hi! I use a C++ library in my application which connects to the network (I suppose it uses sockets). I've been using it for months and I was using xcode 3.2.4. Now, I just had the great idea of upgrading to xcode 3.2.5, and I found out my application was crashing with the error:

Ok, couldn't solve it, so went back to 3.2.4, as suggested somewhere. The application is not crashing anymore, but now the library can't connect anymore to the network. Tried to rebuild it (I didn't write the library but I have the sources) and use the new library, but nothing. Still the library can't connect to the network. I tried with every simulator.
Any idea what there could be wrong and how I may be able to solve this? Can I somehow delete manually everything related to xcode and the simulator and try to start all over again?

I've been able to temporarily solve this problem by removing the entire Development directory and installing again xcode 3.2.4. Even with xcode 3.2.4 however, the same happened, and I had to do this procedure again. Now it seems to be working correctly, but it seems something very strange has happened. Hasn't anyone experienced anything similar?

You have to restore the device within iTunes. You want to use the same computer that you always sync with so that you can restore your app data and settings. You can restore with any other computer, but you will lose everything on the iPad.

Try resetting your modem. Power it down. Wait a moment, then power it up again. While it resets, do not change what is connected to it.
In another, though unrelated article, Apple recommends the following:
If you have configured your Wi-Fi base stations in the past, it may be helpful to do a factory default reset of each Wi-Fi base station that will be part of the wireless extended network before you begin.
This step really ought not be considered optional for the configuration you propose. If the problem persists after resetting your modem, reset everything else too.

I bought mine in the US and activated using a German SIM. It worked fine first on 6.0.1. After upgrading to 6.0.2 the SIM does not work. I have reset the reset the phone and still does not work. Built-In Ethernet Port Doesn't Show Up In The Network Preference Pane

My ethernet port no longer shows up in the Network preferences pane under Network Status. The status Airport and the Internal Modem are still displayed though. Plugging in an ethernet cable causes my machine to crash; sometimes I get a message that I need to hold down the power button to reboot, and other times command line-like text is displayed on top of whatever was on screen.
The only change I've made to my system since last using a wired connection was installing Security Update 2006-001 on March 1st and OS X Update 10.4.5 on February 14th. After running the 10.4.5 updater, my machine initially refused to reboot. On the first attempt, it played the start up chime, but the screen remained black. The second time, the Apple logo appeared, but the spinning pinwheel never did. The third attempt was successful and my system appeared to be functioning normally.
How do I get my ethernet port to work again?

Does "Built-in Ethernet" show up as a choice in the 'Show:" popup? If so, is it configured as you would expect? For instance, if "TCP/IP" is set to use DHCP, do you have an IP address, subnet mask, etc.? There is an "off" setting for TCP/IP; make sure that hasn't been selected somehow.
There is also an "Assist Me" button that will let you launch the diagnostics app. Does this also crash the Mac? If not, what are the results of its tests?
Also, you may want to do a permissions repair with Disk Utility if you haven't done this since applying the updates.
If you still get crashes, there may be a conflict with a log-in item, particularly if you have any third party ones. (Check that in the "Accounts" pref.) One way to diagnose things like that is by creating a new test account & logging into it. If the problems go away, you can assume a user cache, .plist, or login item is the problem.
If none of this turns up anything, you may need to reinstall the OS. Short of that, you can try downloading the 10.4.5 combo update & running it. It replaces more components than the "delta" update so it just might do the trick. Besides, if you end up having to reinstall the OS, having the combo version handy will save you the time of downloading & installing any incremental updates to get back to 10.4.5.
As always, backup all important files before applying any updates.

Yes, this error message is in regard to my MacBook Pro. The reason it's filed here under iPhone is because the error message appeared again when I tried to updae iOS, again (and I wasn't allowed to because I need more room on my Startupdisk), so I simply clicked on the link taking me here to Apple Communities.   And yes I have already empited my trash (I did this each time I cleared old docs off my compuer, so this wasn't a solution for today).
Might you have any other ideas?   I am really at a loss......
Also, where is the Startup disk located? I can't find any folder labeled "startup disk".   Am I supposed to find this folder and delete files from it?

Ipod stuck in recovery mode and won't restore. says it can't connect to the network.

My son tried to jailbreak his ipod touch like an idiot and of course it did not work. Now his ipod is stuck in recovery mode and I can't get it to restore. I get a message that says:the ipod software update server could not be contacted. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later. I have internet access and everything is working but itunes can't connect to it. Why? I have been having issues with itunes for a couple weeks now. Make sure the setting for your security software allow iTunes to contact Apple servers:

As for the iPod, since he tried to modify the software, the only thing that could help would be DFU mode , we can't help much more, problems with jailbroken devices can't be discussed in theses forums, due to the Terms of Use.
Your son has to ask those people for help, which encouraged him to jailbreak his device.

IMac can't connect to the network.

When I try to open safari (version 5.1.1) I get the message "Safari can't connect to the server."
iTunes can't connect either.
However when I go under system preferences> network, it says Wi-Fi is connected. And all the other computers in the house can get online fine.
I use this computer pretty much just for video/film work, and very rarely use it to go online, so this problem could've been going on for several months without me noticing. (At the moment I need to download some software.)
I've googled it, and seen other people with similar problems, but so far none of their solutions have worked,

In the networks pane of system preferences, click on assist me, and choose diagnostics. Follow the instructions to diagnose the problem network. This may provide useful information to continue troubleshooting.

Printer can't connect to the network HP photosmart c309a

I keep having connection issues with my printer. I recently moved it from one room to another and it will not connect to the network. When I do the network test, it doesn't find it and it doesn't find an IP address either. Getting very frustrated.....

Try to move the printer back into the previous room and re-connect.
If it connects with no problem, your issue would be the distance between the router and the printer.
It should be presented in the same room. Before you try doing this, unplug your router for about 20 seconds and plug it back in, and try to connect.

my mac is accessing the internet fine, but my laptop (windows) can't log on to my wireless network and connect to the internet.
i've tried to change my internet sharing preferences under "sharing", "internet", but that does not seem to be the right solution. when i try to connect with my laptop, it asks me to enter in a WEP, ASCII code. i've read all through the help menu and it told me to enter in "applecomputer" as the password, but that doesn't work either.
any help, ideas, and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
