I can't delete applications

A bunch of applications have made their way into my launchpad.  I cannot get rid of them.  I've tried clicking until they go wiggly, but they do not have a black x on the top left corner like normal applications.  I've tried dragging them into the trashcan.  I've tried searching for them in finder and spotlight, but they do not appear in those places.  It is about 3 whole pages of weird applications that I cannot get rid of.  Does anybody know how I can get rid of them?

Hold down the cursor on the item and a  menu will show up - select "Options" and then "Remove from Dock".

  • Can't delete applications from itunes or iphone.

I have bought and downloaded free apps, from itunes, and can't delete them. Now I was able to remove them from itunes, but they are still showing up on my iphone. What am I doing wrong, or what do I need to do?

Press any icon of any app you want to delete from your phone, keep pressing until all the icons start to wiggle, an X will appear on the icon, tap the X and the app will be deleted. Press the home button to stop the icons from wiggling, when done.

I found a solution, but it's not an easy fix, you need to know your way around linux and you need root access to your device. IF YOU DON'T KNOW LINUX, DON'T EVEN TRY, GET A FRIEND TO DO IT FOR YOU!
In my case the root cause was the following stray desktop files:
    /usr/share/applications/installer-extra/appwizard123406.desktop
    /usr/share/applications/installer-extra/qmlreddit.desktop
    /usr/share/applications/installer-extra/remoter_harmattan.desktop
they might be different in your case, but if you don't have either of those apps installed, remove them.
Now, to find out which .desktop files are causing the issue, the easiest way is to make a new folder and put them all in there. Afterwards you look at
    /home/user/.config/meegotouchhome-nokia/launcherbuttons.data
and see if you can find a few lines where the first number at the end of the slash is not 0 (if the folder you just made is the first one, the number will be 1, if it's the 2nd, it'll be 2, etc, ...)
Once you've identified the files, remove the corresponding .desktop files with rm .

  • Can't delete application folder?

    To Whom It May Concern,
Last night, I installed a software just to try it out, but it was having problems running under 10.2.8, so I decided to uninstall it and load the beta instead. I loaded the beta version, but it was not performing well either. I decided to delete the folder, but I couldn't. It said, "This operation could not be completed because this item is owned by root." Please help! The computer I'm using is an iMace flat panel, superdrive, 512Mb, G4 800Mhz, 60 Gig drive. Also, I can't seem to verify, or repair permissions using Disk Utility.
    Sincerely,
    Arnold Pena

    Hello Arnold,
Of course we are speaking here of the software you just tried, not the whole "Applications" folder:
Force-deleting files or folders that refuse to let you do it as usual, can be done using such utility as TinkerTool System for example (go to section Files > Force Delete).
The best is to get rid of every hidden files it could have left on your hard drive in some cases. Use the Finder's Find (⌘F) feature to find them (search for visible AND invisible files) and drag them to the Trash, directly from the Search Results window.
If you use Tiger, Find (⌘F) won't find them all: you'll have to use EasyFind.
Delete only the files that really belong to your trial software: be careful as sometimes names are close, but may belong to your system...
(It would be easier to simply name which software was it that refused to be deleted?)
    Good luck!

  • Delete applications on ipod touch

How can I delete applications from the ipod touch? Thanks

By the way if you remove the app through your iPod you will also have to delete it in iTunes by going to the Applications tab, selecting the app in question and pressing delete to completely delete it or else every-time you sync the app will be reinstalled.
If you have a problem with a specific app, I usually just uninstall it through my iPod then just sync it with iTunes. It will reinstall the app and that has always fixed any problems for me.

How can I delete an app from launchpad, that doesn't have the little cross in the left top corner. The app isn't an App Store app. The application is also not present anymore in my application's folder in finder.
I tried to use the attached command through TERMINAL :
    sqlite3 ~/Library/Application\ Support/Dock/*.db "DELETE from apps WHERE title='Help';" && killall Dock
sqlite3: Error: too many options: "DELETE from apps WHERE title='Help';"

I'm in the same boat as you -- except that I manage both a school lab (volunteer job) and macs in the enterprise (pay job).  What I think we need is the Education Volume Purchasing Program
    http://www.apple.com/education/volume-purchase-program/faq.html
Unfortunately this all seems a little rough around the edges -- for example, I have found updates for AppStore apps on the support.apple.com updates download site, but then when I install them via ARD they don't actually update the software.  (The AppStore icons still show as needing the updates, and the version info reports the old version.)  The documentation is also vague about which AppleID to use in which circumstance.  I think they just haven't finished thinking through the implications of the various procedures and policies upon the various kinds of customers.  When we deployed Mountain Lion on the school lab, we made an install usb and went around and installed it on each computer -- and it appears that you are on the honor system as far as paying for all of the licenses that you install.  We did!  But they appear to have no way to enforce it.
So far, I have only deployed 9 Lion macs in my day job, and our "solution" to the AppStore showing updates problem has been to drag the AppStore icon off of the users' docks so they don't see them!

Trying to clean up my iMac.  Noticed that while in finder, I click on Applications and in the list I see another folder called applications that is a duplicator of the original folder.  Is this truly a copy that can be deleted?

DO NOT remove either folder. DO NOT mess with any OS X system files either. If you have dupliocates check your files in iPhoto, iTunes and your iMovies libraries. Also check your data files, under ALL circumstances stay away from any OS X systems files or you will probably bork your Mac to the point it will not run.

  • Pages 4.3 (332MB) and Pages 5.0 (455MB) are both installed on my macbook, can I delete Pages 4.3 from my application folder?

Pages 4.3 (332MB) and Pages 5.0 (455MB) are both installed on my macbook, can I delete Pages 4.3 from my application folder?
I recently (after upgrading to Mavericks) installed Pages 5.0 (iWorks ’09 with Pages 4.3 was already installed on my Macbook). When I try to open a pages document, I sometimes get the message 'you need a newer version of Pages to open this document.'  When I ctrl-click the pages document and select the program Pages 5.0, the document opens in Pages '05. Other Pages documents open in Pages 4.3. How do I select Pages 5.0 as default program to open my documents? And how do I do that, since pages preferences do not give that possibility? And can I delete pages 4.3 after making pages '05 the default. Or is there another way to solve this?
    kind regards, Sadrach

Using Get Info to change all documents to open with Pages 4.3 doesn't work. It will work on individual files, but that could be a lot of files to reset.
This is what works for me. After I installed the new iWork updates I created a folder on an external drive & named it "other applications." I then moved the new iWork apps to this folder & renamed the applications Keynote 6, Pages 5 & Numbers 3. I have icons for two versions of Pages & Numbers (I rarely use Keynote) in my Dock. Even with two versions of Pages & Numbers running, double-clicking an existing file opens in Pages 4.3 or Numbers 2.3. This should also keep the Mac App Store from nagging you to update. Others have renamed the '09 iWork apps & set them as default.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
It sounds as though you are sharing and iCloud account with someone else, you need to have a separate iCloud account, otherwise there is no way of stopping other sharers from accessing your photos in photo stream.

  • One of my applications does not open. how can i delete and reinstall, one of my applications does not open. how can i delete and reinstall

One of my applications does not open. how can i delete and reinstall it?

    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead.  Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
    AppZapper
    Automaton
    Hazel
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Can't delete custom "My Workouts" in Nike+ application

I have created some custom workouts for my running. For some freak reason, although in the past I was able to, now I can't delete these custom workouts.
Yes, I press Edit, select the workout to delete, delete it, press Done... but by the moment I change tab (to Workouts or History) or shut down and reopen the application, they reappear.
I've already synced my app, turned it off and restarted it, soft reset... to no avail. I can add new custom workouts but can't delete the old ones. Actually the very old ones, the ones I added a week ago, not from the moment I noticed the problem (ie yesterday). If I add something now it can be deleted, but I want to cancel an old custom workout.
*Does anyone have an idea why this might be happening and how can I fix it?*
If it can be of any help, the only thing I changed these past three days has been the SIM and the time zone, because I changed country. Could it be a simple time stamp bug in how the app deals with these entries?

Guys and gals, yes, it's as I suspected. When I swapped the SIMs the problem disappeared and I could delete old workouts normally.
So I have a reason to believe this is a small but potentially* critical bug with the Nike+ application on the iPhone. Why *the custom workouts are bound to the SIM used when creating them* is beyond my understanding, nevertheless, I hope for a future bug fix from Apple.
*what happens if you lose or disable your unique SIM?

  • How can delete application on lion

how can i delete any application on Mac Os X Lion from launchpad?

I don't believe you can delete apps from Launchpad.  You can remove the app via the Application folder in Finder or you could also use an app that helps remove all traces of an App, such as AppZapper or AppDelete.
