Best way to manage a small iPod like the Nano (by small I mean when the capacity of the iPod is less than your entire library) is to set up the iPod to sync only selected playlists. Then it is an easy matter to change your playlists to decide which tunes go on the iPod and which do not.
So set up a Playlist, say "iPod" and now drag everything into that playlist you want on the iPod. Plug in the iPod and change the sync setting to auto update the selected playlists and in the list pick the "iPod" playlist. Now whenever you want to add or substract from the iPod, simply add to or delete out of that playlist.

  • Can't delete the songs from my iPod through iTunes?

When I try syncing my ipod 5th generation with iTunes (newest version), music that I deleted from iTunes isn't deleted from the iPod, but new music added to iTunes are added to the iPod. All other media is synced fine.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
If your iPod is set to automatically update, then it will look exactly as your iTunes library does.
I would uncheck the songs you don't want to transfer to your iPod in iTunes (in the library). Then connect the iPod. When it appears in iTunes go to edit-->preferences. Click the iPod tab. Check "Only Update Checked Songs." Click OK.

  • I bought Itunes match, when can I delete the songs from my Ipad? It's memory is full and I bought Itunes match in order to free some memory space

I bought Itunes match, when can I delete the songs from my Ipad? It's memory is full and I bought Itunes match in order to free some memory space. I already activate the itunes match in the Ipad, but it still keeps the songs. Can I erase them?
    Thanks,

    Hi,
Go to settings > general > usage > storage and select music. You will see how much space is being used. Swipe to delete.
This will clear cache. Streaming uses up storage space. If you have specifically downloaded tracks you can delete them individually. Will still appear on your ipad but with the download icon.

If you are trying to sync contacts direct with Outlook on your computer via the iTunes sync process, this is selected under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes. You need Outlook 2003, 2007, or 2010.

  • HT1329 How can I get the songs on my iPod onto my new iTunes library?

I have an iPod that was synced to another iTunes library on another PC.  The PC died and I replaced it with a MacBook Pro but it keeps saying the iPod is synced w/ another iTunes library.  How can I get the songs on my iPod on the new iTunes library?

Some of the information below has subsequently appeared in a document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.

For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

  • Can I delete the songs on my PC?

I am a disaster. I have a 30G IPOD, I downloaded 954 songs from my CD collection onto my C: Drive on my laptop. The songs are backed up onto a DVD. Can I delete the collection? If I do when I plug in my IPOD will it sync and delete all the songs off my IPOD? I purchased an external hard drive, can I install my IPOD software onto that and download the rest of my CD collection to that?
I am dangerous when it comes to the delete key, so I want to make sure I am doing this right. Thanks in advance for your help.

    April,
If you have backed up your iTunes and now want to delete the tracks from your PC, then you need to change your iPod to the "manually manage songs and playlists" update option. That way you will be able to have a different set if tracks on your iPod without it autosyncing and getting erased. Make the change to the setting before making any changes to iTunes. You'll get instructions here: "Managing Your Songs Manually" http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/tutorial/ipgettingstartedt3.html

  • How can I get the songs from my iPod on to my new iTunes library?!! Help!!

So I've looked on all the support pages but I've got a feeling there is nothing that can be done with this, hopefully someone can help!
We moved to the US and while our computer was being sent over it got water damaged so I lost all of my itunes library. And I didnt back it up properly. So I want to know if there is anyway to transfer all the songs from my ipod onto our new itunes library, or if i can somehow get my ipod songs on to disc and then import them?? I really don't want to lose all my songs, so if anyone can help I'd be very grateful!!

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • I can't import the songs on my ipod shuffle to my new computer

Hi all, I was wondering if you can help. I had my itunes installed on a freinds computer. I now have my own computer and have connected my ipod and installed itunes. I have been able to import the songs I purchased from itunes onto the new computer, but cannot seem to import the songs from the shuffle to the itunes library. I cannot get access to the old computer to make a copy. Can you please advise a way to import the songs from the shuffle to this itunes on my new computer. Many thanks

Connect your iPod to your computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in iTunes enable it for disk use, this is required for most if not all the utilities listed below so they can access the files: Using your iPod as a storage drive
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. There is also manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved and was written long before iTunes 7 and Windows Vista so it requires a little adaptation as the iPod preferences are no longer in the location mention for instance but if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes

  • My Windows Computer Crashed, Can I save the songs on my iPod?

My Windows computer just crashed and all info is lost, so I just bought a new Mac to replace it. Is there any way for me to transfer the songs that are currently on my iPod to my new Mac?

I've had to do this a few times, and what has worked for me is to find a program that shows hidden files. I use a Mac (G3 iBook), so my program of choice is called TinkerTool (there's a free trial version available). Whatever you choose, you can probably find a free version of software that will allow you to view hidden files.
In any case, I don't know if this will work for you since you were running Windows when you put the songs on your iPod, and I think that means your iPod has a different format. Still, I would try to see if revealing hidden files shows the contents of your iPod. You will also need to make sure that it is setup to work as an external hard-drive (I don't know how this works with Windows, but it's just a preference under the iPod preference panel in iTunes).
The caveat is that the files on the iPod are not labeled in a particularly coherent way, but, if your main goal is retrieval, this isn't really an issue. Besides, from my experience, iTunes knows what the files are once you have imported them, so it's not such a big deal that you can't identify them on the iPod.
I hope you find something that works!

  • I have tow itunes libraries.  Music from one library has merged with the other and I can not delete the songs.  They keep coming back.

I have two ipod touch libraries under my account.  One for my daughter and one for me.  I bought my daughter an Iphone and then opened her ipod touch libraryon the computer (Windows Vista).  I plugged in her iphone so that she can have the stuff from her ipod touch on her new phone.  Somehow her library has partially merged with my library.  My ipod touch now has some of HER games and music on it.  I went into my library and deleted these games and songs, but they keep coming back.  How do I get rid of these once and for all.  I don't want to be shuffling AC/DC, Rob Zombie, and then get Justin Bieber all of a sudden while sitting at a red light in traffic.

    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • Can I delete the songs off my hard drive?

I have an 80 gb iPod, but no where near that amount of space on my hard drive. I was wondering if I needed to keep the songs on my hard drive to keep them in my iTunes and iPod, or is it possible to delete them and still have them available. I'm almost positive this isn't the case, but I figured I'd ask someone else.

Follow the instructions in this article; you can then delete songs from your computer without them being deleted from the iPod automatically. If you do this, you should keep another copy of the songs, as they can easily be lost if they are only on the iPod.
