I can't do photo merging or photo blending at all in Photoshop elements8

I followed all the steps in photoblending like placing one photo over the other, clicking on the adjustment layer, using the gradient tool, clicking Cntrol G (or using a paintbrush to brush away the first layer)... nothing happens. I must have done this 20 times in a span of 2 weeks..... I need help. Thanks.

I take it you are attempting to make a clipping mask.  Back when I first learned how to use Elements, I had problems learning this concept so don't feel bad.
Masking rules to learn.
White paint reveals...shows the layer's full effect.
Black paint masks...hides the layer's full effect.
Gray paint is semi-transparent...partially shows layer's effect the amount transparency depends on the shade of gray with lighter shades being more opaque and darker shades more transparent. Think feathering....
Let's do this as an exercise...
Prep.
Open a photo file. Duplicate the file and close your original so we are working on a copy. Double click you background layer's lock icon in the layers palette and convert the background layer to a regular layer. (Alternately, click the lock icon...continue to hold in the click...and drag the lock to the trash can.)
Now, you should see an unlocked layer in the layers palette. This will be our start point.
1. Create a solid color fill adjustment layer and click okay to accept it. Click on the adjustment layer and while holding in the mouse button drag it down in the layers palette so that it is below your photo layer.
2. Target (click on your photo layer) and press ctrl + G to clip photo to adjustment layer. Alternately, you can press the alt key and hover over the line between the adjustment layer and the photo. You should notice the icon becomes an arrow with two rings. Click the line.
Nothing happened as the mask is white. As part of the exercise, click on the adjustment layer. Notice that a thin black outline appears around the mask. This indicates the mask is targeted. Press ctrl + I to invert the mask. You should now see a checkerboard pattern. This indicates your image is masked...hidden. It is completely hidden because the mask is filled with black. Grab the paintbrush tool. Make sure that the tool is set to Normal mode and is set to 100% opacity in the options bar. Set your foreground color to white. Paint a line in your mask. Notice that where you paint the line your image is visible.
Okay let's fill the mask with white to reveal your image again. Use paint bucket to dump white paint into the mask. Your photo should now be fully visible.
Now let's set up your gradient tool.
Press D to set the toolbox color chips to default black and white. Press X to swap the color chips so that black is set as the foreground color. Grab the gradient tool. Select the black to transparent gradient preset. (If black to transparent isn't displayed in the gradient window located in the options bar, click gradient window and black to transparent should be second preset.)  Make sure transparency box is checked in your options bar. For this particular exercise,  make sure the gradient tool is in Normal blend mode and set to 100% opacity. Select the linear gradient style icon (first one...white fade to black) in the options bar.
3. Click on adjustment layer mask. You should notice a thin black line around the mask in the layers palette. This tells you the mask is targeted.
4. Hold in the shift key and drag the gradient in the document. (Holding in the shift key as you drag using the gradient tool keeps the gradient constrained to a straight even line.) Image should now be photo fading the checkerboard pattern...
Note: If you want gradient tool to drag out the black to transparent in the opposite direction check the box in the options bar that says "reverse". If you want to pull more than one gradient...to fade more than one edge change the gradient tool's blend mode to "Multiply blend mode.
Here is a tutorial on using clipping masks.
http://www.photokaboom.com/photography/learn/Photoshop_Elements/layers/layer_groups_clippi ng_masks/1_layer_groups_clipping_masks.htm
Note: The first example in the above link (using the hair) has the adjustment mask over the hair because the hair is the base to the clipping group...levels is increasing the contrast to just the hair. I didn't want that example to mess you up if you were just skimming the article I could see that potentially happening.
Note: I should also point out that you will see tutorials that refer to clipping masks as clipping groups.  This is because prior to E8 clipping masks were called clipping groups. From what I understand, Adobe changed the term to make the term the same across product lines.  They are the same thing...just different names. The menu commands are also slightly different. In E8+,  the menu command is Layer<Create Clipping mask. In versions prior to E8,  the menu command is Layer<Group with Previous. I think E8+ still uses the shortcut Ctrl + G to create a clipping mask.  If the shortcut doesn't work, use the menu command.

I just bought my apple tv yesterday and SET UP THE HOME SHARING ON MY COMPUTER, I CAN STREAM MY PHOTOS AND SEE ALL THE VIDEOS AND LISTEN SONGS IN MY ITUNES, BUT CAN NOT DO HOME SHARING, ON THE TV, ALWAYS SHOWS "TURN ON HOME SHARING ON YOUR OMPUTER WITH YOUR ID WHICH I DID BUT NOTHING HAPPEN. WHAT'S WRONG? WHAT SHALL I DO NOW?

I have found with AppleTV that it is the IPV6 on the computer you want to access is the problem.  The issue is that Homegroup on Win 7 or Win 8 requires IPV6 to work, but AppleTV won't work with IPV6.  (So maybe double check you have IPV6 turned off)
So you have to make a choice - Homegroup or AppleTV.... but you can't have both, until Apple brings ATV up to date. (crazy that it does not recognise IPV6 - c'mon Apple!)
You can set up sharing individually in Win 7 or 8 and have the ATV access files that way.
Having said that, there is always the exception.. I have an old HP home server running Win8 and it services ATV - but is part of the Homegroup... have no idea why it works on both, but no other machine on the home network will talk to both ATV and Homegroup at the same time!

  • How can I save photos to iPhoto direct from Photoshop Elements

Does anyone know how I can save a photo direct to iPhoto after editing in PSE?  Currently I save to the desktop and then "import".  Its a bit of a fiddly way espectially if you  are editing a number of photos direct from iPhoto.  It would be nice to save them back to the relevant Event or Album.
    Regards

    This may help:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 9 or later the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu.

should i be able to open photo studio files (.psf) in photoshop cs5? How?

PSF is also an extension for color proof preset/ files in Photoshop.
However, Photo Studio's PSF files may be opened in Photoshop if you change the extension to .JPG. However, you may be unable to use editing capabilities of the file.

  • Can't find photo that was edited in photoshop in iPhoto

    Hello,
I do all my photo editing in Photoshop Elements 6. I save the edited photo in the iPhoto library (same place as the original photo), but when I go back to iPhoto, I cannot find the edited photo, only the original. Any idea where it is or how I can view it in iPhoto? I am using iPhoto '08.
    Thank you!

    Ozark:
Here's how you should be using Photoshop Elements 6 with iPhoto:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.

You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • IMPORTANT PROJECT! Can't adjust photos in preview. all black

I am desperate. I have to have a project done with slides andmusic in the next couple of days and I have my newly installed Imovie 6 but it isn't letting me adjust slides. Some work okay, but some just show up blank in the preview. If I adjust them blindly, they seem to work, but I am scared to try to do this entire project and then have it not work. What do I do? Can I reinstall my last version of this software without losing what I have already completed? Please help me asap.

I've have the problem too. The only workaround that seems to work requires a realtime quick maneuver; however, the results aren't as sharp.
While the image is in the process of importing (i.e., the red progress line indicator is expanding), quickly select iMovie (to activate the program if you just dragged a photo from iPhoto or a folder somewhere), and then type Cmmd-Shift-S and it will capture a still image, which, in theory, should be the same; but in reality seems to be a tad blurry. But you do get the image, just not 100% quality.

  • Can't send photo from iPhoto 9 to Photoshop Elements 10.0

I just got a new iMac with Lion 10.7.2 and Photoshop Elements 10.0. In iPhoto 11. I set the preferences to use Photoshop Elements to edit photos. When I double click on a photo, Photoshop Elements Editor comes up, but there is no photo. There has been some discussion on this for earlier versions, but this is the latest available for both versions. I don't think I should have to go through hoops, trashing system files and stuff to get this to work.

Thank you. It worked. And it also explains why I always got the Adobe Photoshop Elements welcome screen evey time I opened Photoshop from the Dock. I had the wrong icon in the doc as well.

  • Can't find photo library but I can see them in photo editing apps???

When I go to my photo app on my ipad I can see some photos but not all of them. When I tried to open one of the photo editing apps I have all of my pictures are there. Why can't I see them in the other photo app where they use to be. To my knowledge nothing has been changed on the ipad, I just noticed it one day. Thank you!!

you do not say which photo app you can only see some of them in.
if you are looking "Photos" with the rainbow flower icon, then this is only your camera roll, not all of  your photos.  So any new photo you take will appear in your camera roll, and you can upload old photos into your camera roll, but it is not meant to have all your photos there.   Think of it like a roll of film in a camera, you use it for a while, then you take it out and put a new roll in.

  • Can I Stream Photos

I am not able to stream photos to my Apple TV, it is only allowing me to sync them, Am I missing something, before the update I was able to stream no problem.

Winston, you've given lots of answers in this forum and you seem well connected. But I am not and have to say that I am completely flummoxed. I have upgraded my TV to software version 2.0 but am completely lost. Your further help would be appreciated
The problem is that I cannot stream photos. Period. And I find Apple's help worse than useless.
For starters I have NEVER seen the pages described in this this support document:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306467
(I have NEVER seen the word "Sources" in any menu, nor have I seen the words "Share photos from...")
I ONLY ever get the choice to Sync - no matter how many time I go through the reconnection of my TV to my iMac, I can always establish contact and I get what I assume is a "syncing" Main Library.
And it works - except that I can't stream photos even with ALL sync options deselected. (I can sync photos fine but I don't want to). Clearly I am missing something.
If I select "add shared iTunes Library" I get a new number to use but there is nowhere to put it - my iMac is quite contentedly showing that I have my previously established library. So where do I go from there?
If you, or anyone else, can see a step that that I have missed or a gap in my logic I would really appreciate your help.

  • How can I sort photos within an event? When I follow the Help instructions, I can sort manually in Photo format, but when I return to Event format, the original order is restored.

How can I sort photos within an event? When I follow the Help instructions, I can sort manually in Photo format, but when I return to Event format, the original order is restored.

Events are organisation for those who can't really be bothered. They are automatic - based entirely on Date and Time the camera records the photos as taken.
You can move photos between Events, you can Merge Events, you can Rename them and sort them in various ways except one: You cannot manually sort in an Event as Events are all automated.
If you want to manually sort in an Event then you've outgrown Events as an organising tool. Now it's time to look at albums (Where you can manually sort) which are much more flexible than Events as an organising tool.

  • Can I delete photos app and start again? How?

Ok, I've been really daft and did not ever know that there was a photo trash can in iPhoto. So for years in iPhoto I've been deleting or rather just removing photos and not thinking much of it.
Just did my mac updates and notice I now have Photo. Open up and wow I now have 100s of photos that I thought I had deleted, some years ago.
With over 16,000 photos in total this is not a job I want to go through sifting and deleting the rubbish again.
I opened my time machine but can't work out how to go back. Is there any way of wiping photo and then starting again? It didn't ask me about importing or merging from iPhoto it seemed to have done it on its own. If the photos are still in iPhoto can I delete photo and reinstall after fixing the issue in iPhoto?
Afraid to do something and mess it up further and so looking for advice from someone who actually knows what they are doing!
    Thank you!

You can't delete the Photos app as it's part of the system.  You can continue to use iPhoto and your iPhoto library.  The iPhoto app is still in the Applications folder. If it's iPhoto 9.6.1 it will work with 10.10.3. If it's not try getting 9.6.1 from the App Store following Terence Devlin's instructions below:

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.
Regarding the "deleted" photos did you systematically empty the iPhoto Trash bin each time you delete photos?

  • Can use use photos saved in Aperture 2.1.1 in the new Aperture, can use use photos saved in Aperture 2.1.1 in the new Aperture

can use use photos saved in Aperture 2.1.1 in the new Aperture, can use use photos saved in Aperture 2.1.1 in the new Aperture.
Does anyone out there no if you can merge the libraries?  I have two hard drives full of photos saved in the Aperture 2.1.1 library, I have never needed to upgrade.  I bought a Mac desktop and purchased the new aperture.  When I plug the hard drive in and try to use the other ones from the earlier version, the computer says files are incomplatible..
    Can anyone help?

When AP 3.0 was released, Apple added a new rendering engine and the local adjustment brushes. Upgrading at that time required that the library be upgraded also to use the new features. Users had the option of upgrading the library database (and internal support files) only, or to opt for updating all images to allow use of the local adjustment features (brushes) on those images.
There have been additional updates that required the library to be updated also (AP 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 and 3.4 if memory serves). There may have been a couple of additional ones, but those 3.x updates added key features.
I suspect you may need to update your current library to AP 2.1.4 > make a copy for backup > upgrade library to AP 3. You may be able to upgrade directly from 2.1.4 to 3.4.1, but I am not sure since I went from 2.1.4 to 3.0.
If you have OS X 10.8.2 on the new machine, I am not sure if AP 2.1.4 can be run (hopefully others can answer that one). Merging and exporting projects as a library were one of the features in AP 3, so you must have a library at that level to do that type of procedure.
Here is a link to the update features and you will see some recommendations at the bottom for upgrading the libraries for use with AP 3.
Sorry, forgot the add the link:

  • How can I moving photos from one roll to an other

I tried to drag and drop photos from one roll to an other. If the roll has a lot of photos (e.g. 250) I can not scroll down to a roll below. iPhotos does not automatically scroll down when I try to drag them down.
How can I scroll or move these down?
    thanks for your input
    Baguette

Drag and drop will work, but you have to drag to the roll title. It will turn blue when you can drop the photos. It should scroll when you move to the top or bottom of the window, but sometimes it gets going really fast and is hard to stop where you want it.
An easy way is to close the rolls and make everything as small as possible so the the source and destination rolls are all in the window at the same time. Of course if you have a really big library this might work.
