Go to the iTunes App Store, sort the applications by release data, and look at the older ones; these are likely to be compatible with iOS 4.2.1. If the iPhone is a 3GS or newer model, it can be connected to iTunes on a computer and updated to 6.1.3.

If the apps are over 50 MB, you need to connect using Wi-Fi.
Also check Settings > iTunes & App Stores > Apple ID: > sign out and sign back in.

Do you currently have a credit card set up in your iTunes store Enter Payment Information screen?
If so, grab a recent statement for that card and check to make sure that the address that shows up in your Enter Payment Information screenexactly matches the address showing on your credit card statement. For example, if your address in the credit card statement says "Street", the iTunes screen has to also say "Street" (Not St or Str.)
Also make sure that your name in the iTunes screen exactly matches the one in your statement. (Say, if you've got a middle initial in the credit card statement name, you need one in the iTunes screen.)
After doing that, does that get you past the invalid address thing?

Please do not contribute to electronic waste and discard a device that works perfectly fine. There are hundreds of thousands of apps for iOS 4.2.1. Apple does not make it easy to find them, for obvious reasons. A Google search for
"angry birds" "requires iOS" -4.3 -5.0 -5.1 -6.0 -6.1 -"5 or later" site:itunes.apple.com/us/
will give your son a choice of over 2,000 angry birds apps.

I got my iphone 5c in early march and by that time i was already having trouble with apple in which I had bought an app and it had charged me 3 times, and 2 extra $1 charges that were eventually expired. I fixed this by just getting a new apple id. That's when this problem started occuring. Everytime I try to download an app, even a free app it will ask me for my password, i'll type it in, then it will look like it's loading for a few seconds and instead of the button reading "open" it still reads free and the app hasn't shown up on my home screen. Also it won't really let me update apps either. it does the same thing where it loads and then goes right back to the "update" button instead of "open" but when i go to my home screen it's updated. not really a problem but most likely ties into the whole apps not downloading thing. anyways, thanks!

Welcome to the Support Communities! To troubleshoot this issue, I would first suggest you sign out of the iTunes Store on your iPhone, then quit all open apps and restart the iPhone. The iPad 1 can't run the newer operating systems. It'd be like trying to play a bluray disc in your 6 year old dvd player....it simply lacks the hardware to make the software run.
No suggestion about the camera, but given that Apple's attitude seems to be to focus more on the more mobile devices for photography (the iPhone and Touch cameras got features, the iPad and mini didn't), that is highly unlikely. You can tell Apple what you want, but you'd probably be money ahead to get a digital camera.
as to the photos, anything put on via iTunes has to come off via iTunes.Your main alternative would be to look for photo apps that offer file exchange that may give you more functionality.

I have the same problem - it is maddening. I rely on this iPad for work so this is not just an annoyance! The above solutions of changing the appleid on the device or on the website do not work.
The old email address no longer exists - I haven't used it in a year probably and I no longer have the account. I logged into the appleid website and there is no trace of the old email address so there is nothing that can be deleted or changed there. On the iPad there is no trace of the old email address so nothing can be deleted there either. I have updated the iPad software and the same problem comes right back. Every 2 seconds I am asked to log in using the old non-existent email. The device is currently useless.
The only recent change to anything was the addition of an Apple TV device, which was set up using the correct login and password.
Does anyone have any ideas? The iPad has been backed up to the iCloud so presumably it now won't recognize the current iCloud account? So restoring may notbe an option?
