I can't empty trash. I get error code 8003. I am trying to delete some time machine back ups to make more room on my external hard drive.

My trash has files from time machine/Drobo, my external hard drive. It refuses to empty and prevents me from emptying other files from my iMac.

  • Can't empty Trash due to error codes

I have begun getting error codes when I attempt to empty Trash. For example:
+"The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8003)."+
Of course, if I use SuperEmptyTrash, I can empty Trash. But, I should not have to do it that way.
I would appreciate any insight into what may be happening here.

Since these two external drives had been backed up previously, this process must have resulted in Time Machine deleting the previous backups of these two external drives.
I don't think so. When adding an item to the Exclude list, previous backups should not be deleted. And even when Time Machine does delete something, it's deleted immediately. TM never moves an item to the Trash.
So I suspect that something else is going on. Try disconnecting all of your external drives and unmount all disk images. Do you then still have the same problem emptying the Trash?

  • I moved some time machine back-ups to the trash and I cannot move or delete them?

I was trying to make room in my Time Machine back-up disk and I moved some files to the trash.  Now I cannot delete or move them.  What can I do?

The answer depends on exactly what you did to delete the files.
In general, it is not advisable to delete Time Machine backups using the Finder. Time Machine works in conjunction with Spotlight to organize Time Machine backups. Deleting files required Spotlight to work overtime, and it is possible that this action corrupted its database.
If this happened, it is fixable.

  • TS1702 trying to upload apps but it says not enough space can we purchase more space from ICloud or something or do we need to delete some things on the IPod to make more room?

we are trying to sync apps, music etc. to my IPod touch but it is saying there is not enough room to upload the apps etc. from our ITunes library on my PC.  Are we able to purchase more space for example on ICLOUD for more storage or do we need to delete some of the items so there is enough room for the things we really want.
Also, if we do need to delete some of the stuff now on IPod touch, how do I find out how much space is used up by each item so we can delete necessary items to make enough space?
    Thank you,
    Kellyfunpass

You need to delete some items from the iPod. After you install the app you can redownload then as storage space allows, by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
To download and install an app you need storage available equal to about three times the file download size.

  • Can I safely delete old Time Machine back ups?

I use a 1TB external drive for Time Machine but it's nearly full. There are 43 different back ups on the drive, can I safely delete all but the most recent one or two? I realize I would not be able to restore my system from a deleted back up but I can't think of a reson I'd want to. Would greatly appreciate any insight on this, thanks!
p.s. Why does Time Machine keep so many back ups in the first place? I can't find anything in preferences to limit the number of stored back ups. Is there a way to limit the number?

    Hello:
I use a 1TB external drive for Time Machine but it's nearly full. There are 43 different back ups on the drive, can I safely delete all but the most recent one or two? I realize I would not be able to restore my system from a deleted back up but I can't think of a reson I'd want to.
It makes no sense to delete old backups.  Time Machine automatically deletes backups if it needs space.  If you start deleting backups, you will do it ONE at a time.
Why does Time Machine keep so many back ups in the first place?
    It is designed that way.
Is there a way to limit the number?
    No.
Why are you having a problem with the design of Time Machine?  Do you need, for some reason, extra space on the external drive?  If that is the case, you should have partitioned the external.

  • RE: Time Machine -  I have just replaced a drive on my drobo (to increase capacity). Time machine is backing up OK but I can no longer access Time machine back ups made before the date when I replaced the drive. Why?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Hold down the option key and select
    Browse Other Backup Disks...
from the Time Machine menu in the menu bar. The menu icon looks like a clock running backwards. If you don't have that menu, open the Time Machine preference pane and check the box marked

This should help you empty what's currently in the trash, but is no guarantee you got everything related to MacKiller off the drive. See Ogelthorpe's link.

  • Why do I get error code -8003 when attempting to empty the trash?

I moved a number of folders from a back-up drive (using Time Machine) to the trash, and have had no success in getting them out of the trash.  Option+Empty, Option+Secure Empty Trash, after using Disk Utility to repair permissions and then try again, and the TrashIt! app.. nothing is working.  I'm not in need of the space, I just want to get rid of the items.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, as I can't even find 'Error Code -8003' anywhere.  tx

The reason why some of the files are blocking the trash from emptying is because of specific ".app" files from third party companies like Adobe products. Not the user files or the various help documents but instead the actual mother program. Here's how to fix this problem:
    1) remove from the trash all the actual software programs like Photoshop, InDesign, DreamWeaver and so on and put them on the desktop.
    2) Command "I" (info) and when the dialog box opens go to the "Name & Extension" text box and remove the ".app" from the software name. Example: Photoshop.app change to Photoshop.
    3) the program icon will change to a "folder icon".
    4) put the folder icon back into the trash and you should be able to now empty the trash.
If you continue to get the error code 8003 it's because you may still have one or more software programs in the trash that needs to go through this process. Remember - it's not the user files or help documents or supporting files that is causing this but instead the "actual product programs".
