I can't export to external editor to edit

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard and noticed that "Edit in External Editor" option is grayed out in iPhoto. I remember setting it up to edit in Photoshop. What do I need to do to be able to set it up to direct iPhoto to Photoshop as my external editor?

in the iPhoto preferences set the edit in to external editor - to change it simply do it again - and once you set PS as the external editor you can change the edit in back to main window and when you right click on a photo you get a menu allowing you to choose PS

  • How can I change the external editor in iphoto?

When I go to Preferences, the only option that pops up in General Edit is Graphic Converter (formerly used). How can I change the external editor to Photoshop Elements 6? Also, can I drag and drop a photo from iPhoto onto the Photoshop elements 6 icon in the dock and do some editing and saving without corrupting my iPhoto library?

I do not remember how (if) iPhoto 6 handles PSE6 as an external editor - in iPhoto '08 you can set any program as one - try going to the preference that has graphic converter in it and selecting it - you probably will get a select dialogue that will let you choose a new external editor
It is not recommend that you ever save any files directly into the iPhoto library - if you can not get PSE6 set as the external editor then you should export your photos, edit them and save and then import the new photo into iPhoto
But I believe you will be able to set PSE6

  • Ver 1.4.1 "Unknown error" + refusal to export to external editor.

I have encountered the following and have sent a 'BUG' report to Adobe concerning it, as follows.
    ******BUG******
An "An Unknown error has occurred" report has appeared on many photos. It is then not possible to export these to an external editor (including Photoshop Elements 3).
I suspect that this error occurs on the files that have been converted to DNG since updating to LR vers. 1.4.1
I am going to (attempt to)revert to vers. 1.3 until vers. 1.4.1 settles down!
I am using Windows Home edn. (up to date)

    PLEASE READ THIS !
Following your question, Don, I did a spot of thinking and checking. I have discovered that I actually re-installed the 'old' version of LR 1.4, that is vers. 1.4 itself and not the new 1.4.1. The error disappers with the latest version !
I'm very sorry if I have wasted your time with this Don and Lee Jay.

  • How Can I Setup Multiple External Editors In iPhoto'09? (8.12)

My daughter has cortical visual impairment and we are trying to modify photos so that she can get more out of them.  Just about everything we need to do can be done in one program like photoshop but it can be tedious and if you know anything about caring for a disabled child then you know that we simply don't have enough time and when we do have a few minutes we're exhausted.
Our daughter is 11 now and we are really excited about improvements we are seeing in her sight and demonstrated understanding of her environment, we want to build on this.
Currently we make photo cues for communication (they all need black backgrounds), line art of everyday obects so she can choose correct colours and then colour them, and we want to start emphasizing objects in some photos by reducing or eliminating surrounding colour.
If you think you would like to volunteer to do any of this editing for us you can visit her (outdated) website for more some more info and an email link:
    Creative Independence For Celeste Society
When we want to edit photos I would like to start from iPhoto and choose to edit from Photoshop, iSplash, linesmART, etc.
Currently I right click and then drag the image file onto the other program icon (or the open file dialog of the other program) but when we do it this way the photo is not automatically updated in iPhoto, it needs to be imported.
We would really like to keep using iPhoto to manage our files.  I joke that my wife and technology are not freinds, but really its not her fault; we have too much going on to remember a bunch of steps to complete a process and a different but similar bunch of steps for a different process, we need a simple one-click solution.  Maybe there is a plug-in I can install?
I'm reluctant to try seting up an applescript/automator/workflow solution myself because I've tried those in the past and it just seems like Apple has more good intentions than follow through in that department, other users always seem to find a way to break them.

As someone who parents a profoundly disabled daughter (see: http://www.rettsyndrome.ie) who just turned 12, you have all my sympathy. That said, there is no way to set up multiple editors in iPhoto. It can only use one at a time.

  • How can I export an external calendar to my Apple calendar on the Macbook? ie: Airbnb Calendar.

Can anyone help? I would like the schedule information on the Airbnb site Calendar to appear on he Macbook. So far i've been able to manage it on the iphone but not the computer.  Thank you!

I have done extensive research and it appears that this can't be done.  A couple of people said you can email your .ics file to the iOS device, click on the file and you will be prompted to add the events to the calendar.  But this process failed for me, and when I tried it a second time, I didn't get the "add all" option any more.  I'm guessing the 4000 or so events were too much for the phone's processing and syncing capabilities.  Anyway, Apple's failure to support a basic function like .ics import on Windows means that I won't be using iCloud anytime soon.  It's too bad, because I would appreciate the ability to set a reminder on the desktop and have it work on the phone, which I can't do with my Gmail calendar.

When I try to publish it on You Tube, this message showed up "compressionkit error or domain error." What to do?
I even ended up buying the Compressor, but it claimed I needed to update to a final cut pro that costed about 320 dollars. I'm pretty sure i have a new version. Anyhow, I'm really stressing out because I need to publish it on monday, so I'm hoping someone here can help me...

Thanks! I ended up downloading a trial version av fcp that helped me save the project so that I can post it in time! A short term solution though, but guess I'll have to consider and update for a more longterm solution

  • Can't change external editor. Why?

I use iPhoto 6.0.3. I have Photoshop installed and was using it as the external editor in iPhoto. I've not bought and installed Photoshop Elements 4 and installed it.
If I Control click on a photo in iPhoto, the only option I still have is Photoshop. You would think I would have the two options to select to edit it but, I can't see anyway to change it to Elements or use Elements.
iPhoto won't let me change external editors.
    Any help appreciated.

I think you can only specify one external editor. It's selected in the iPhoto 'preferences' pane on the General tab. Revisit that window and pick the 'edit photo' chooser. When you pick the Photoshop entry it will allow you to select a different application (PSE4) as the alternate editor. Then you can go back and select the default way to edit and control-click ought to give you what you want.

  • Intensify as external editor: how, and how well, does it work?

Intensify from developer macphun I have assigned as an image editor in iPhoto Preferences/Advanced.  In iPhoto when i click on Edit the image opens in Intensity and can be edited.  Unfortunately, saving after editing the image presents a standard file dialog offering to save the edited image in Documents.  Getting the edited image back into iPhoto requires importing.  Afterwards other data, such as Places, Faces and notes, are gone, although the original unedited photo remains in iPhoto and still has the data.
To edit with Intensify seems to require exporting, editing, then re-importing the photo.  Is this how all iPhoto external editors work?  I had thought that an external editor would substitute for iPhoto's editor and edit the existing photo while it remained in the iPhoto library  I see on the MacPhun web site that Intensify Pro can be run "...as either a standalone app or as a plug-in to Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Photoshop Elements, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and Apple Aperture."  Does iPhoto need a plug-in version to simply replace its internal editor?
In past versions OS X allowed applications to provide services to one another.  I have not kept up with how services are implemented, but I think I expected iPhoto to essentially use its services when an editing program was selected.
Can someone more familiar with OS X services, iPhoto's use of external editors in general and/or Intensity in particular, help me understand this?

    Terrence,
Thanks for the comments. I appreciate the help.  Sounds like you have considerable expertise in what I need to learn.  Some of what you said I do not understand.  If you could clarify these points it would help me more.
You say "No it's not like this with any editor used as an external editor in iPhoto."  I assume you mean an external editor would edit the photo while the photo remains within the iPhoto database, so export to edit followed by import to return the edited photo to iPhoto would not be needed.  Is this correct?
You say "... Intensify isn't an editor, it's a non-destructive database-based application."  In my very limited reading and experience, it seems Intensity modifies single image files.  How is an application intended to modify image files to change their appearance not an editor?  How is an application intended to work with single files a database-based application?
While posting here I also asked MacPhun support a similar question.  They replied "This editing procedure is fine, you can send the edited image from Intensify to iPhoto as shown at the screenshot attached."
The menu choice shown does allow saving in iPhoto after pressing in Intensity.  However, the edited image imported into iPhoto has lost metadata such as found faces, places and comments associated with the original, and it is placed in a new Event.  That MacPhun support refers to the product of what Intensity does as "the edited image" shows why I referred to Intensity as an image editor.
You say "In essence, you cannot use a non-destructive processor as an editor" yet "With Aperture I have used it as a plug-in."  To me this sounds like one can use Intensity as a non-destructive processor if Intensity's function is accessed as a plug-in.  That is, the necessity to export images from iPhoto to "process" (what I would call edit) them in Intensity results from how Intensity and iPhoto access the image files, not from the type of processing involved.
You say "This has nothing to do with services ..."  Agreed.  I mentioned services because I thought one application modifying data for another seemed like a service.
On further consideration I realize that non-destructive, eh, processing of an image requires storing the original plus the processing steps which have been implemented.  This seems similar to what iPhoto's built-in editing functions do.  However, I suspect Intensity's more complex processing of the image requires a more complex file structure, which iPhoto cannot read or write.
Supporting this idea of different file structures, I see my originals in iPhoto are typically JPGs of size 800 KB - 5 MB.  After processing by Intensity, "-edit" is append to the file name, the format changed to tiff, and the file size increase by a factor of 8.  The format conversion and consequent increase in file size I have not seen mentioned in Intensity's literature, but may be of significance to other potential users.
You say "There is no plug-in for iPhoto - perhaps you should ask the developers to make one."  Agreed.  Not for iPhoto, which is being terminated, but for its replacement Photos.

  • Open with External Editor

    Hi
When I try to Export to External Editor (to Photoshop) the opened image is 95Mb. These are originally raw images from a Canon EOS 1Ds Mk11 which open in Photoshop as 45Mb.
Anyone know why the images are opening as twice the size but dimensions and dpi are the same?
    Regards
    Doug Hall
    eyetwoeye

It might be true that if you use external editor and send 16 bit file and return 8 bit it creates some problem, I do not agree on the general statement.
Canon raw (I shoot Nikon but that is beside the point) files are really 12 bit color but is called 16 bits and once in PS, it remains 16 bits. The original question is apples-to-apples comparison. both images are supposed to be 16 bits. So the question is why is the file bigger in one instance than another. The only thing I can think of is that the file size may differ because PS will process raw file as PSD and Ap sends the file as TIF. I often find that PS saved TIF, JPEG files are smaller than from other apps for the same image.
I don't think anyone is suggesting that one converts the file from 16 bit to 8 in the external editor.
    Cheers

  • 16bt files with external editor

Am I missing something very obvious?
No matter what I do, I am unable to export to external editor (photoshop) and have them open as 16bt files. They always open as 8bt.
    What am I doing wrong?

No, you are right. My nice 16 bit file goes to 8 bits
when opened in the external editor. Needs to be fixed.
Needs to be fixed and we should not be forced into Adobe RGB (1998)! What if the scene gamut exceeds this? I can’t get ProPhoto? Or the scene gamut is much smaller but I want 16-bit sRGB?
Is there any logic in how Aperture is providing this encoding? Again, I suspected it was based on the EXIF data the camera writes to the RAW file based on the matrix. I’m lazy but should set my Canon to sRGB, shoot RAW and see what Aperture thinks it should use. But that doesn’t matter because having only sRGB or Adobe RGB (1998) doesn’t cut it.
Why not allow us to setup as we do with Export how we want the Open with External Editor to handle all this?
From a color management perspective, this application is hopeless lame. Hard to believe it’s from the company that started the ICC and introduced ColorSync. We can’t control the rendering intent for output color spaces. The Histogram doesn’t tell us squat about the rendered image and there’s no RGB info palette (that again should tell us the values AFTER we produce a true RGB image. How can they call this a Pro tool?

  • Error -50 when using an external editor

Having finally graduated from iPhoto 2, I found some "interesting" behavior in iPhoto '08...
iPhoto objected when I tried to save an externally edited photo back into its slot in iPhoto -- nothing lost, just an error dialog and the edits were not applied. Since it was repeatable, it made me curious.
When you choose external editor to edit a photo in iPhoto 8, the first thing iPhoto does is stash a copy of the original (and activates the "Revert to Original" menu item for that photo). Just editing in iPhoto 8 doesn't do any of this until you accept the changes -- that's an important distinction, because if you change your mind with the external editor (and make no edits, or cancel them without saving), that stashed copy stays in the "modified" folder.
For all practical purposes, it's "forgotten" unless you happen to choose "Revert to Original", in which case, the extra photo is unceremoniously purged. Now, if you don't think about purging that forgotten copy and later decide that you actually do want to edit that photo in an external editor after all, iPhoto will again stash a copy while your external editor is opening. It gets stashed in the same folder that already has the previously stashed (and forgotten) image file. If the file were overwritten, there would be no big problem, but it does not get overwritten, and you can't have two files with the same name in the same folder. So the finder appends a "_1" to the end of the file name -- and THAT sets up the problem. When you finish editing and save the file back to iPhoto, you will be (unintentionally) trying to add a file to your collection that iPhoto doesn't know about. The filename change to avoid a conflict in the folder is not reflected in the iPhoto 8 database.
Older iPhoto versions would have let that pass (and that's why there were always problems with database corruption), but the newer version catches the attempt and simply doesn't allow the save to take place.
That's the "why it happens", but it's only my second day with iPhoto '08 and I'll need a little more time to work out how to selectively fix the problem without damaging the database -- a database rebuild does not purge those stashed photos (and you wouldn't want it to because most of them are the originals for photos that were actually modified).

    Brie Fly:
I tried to replicate that using Photoshop and could not. When starting an edit with PS a file is created and remains is I abort the edit in PS. However, if I edit again with PS and save the original modified file is changed with no other file being created.
What 3rd party editor are you using? The only time I get a _1 file is when I move a file to an event that has the same file name as a file already in that event.
What system are you running and are you at iPhoto 7.1.1, iLife Support 8.1.1 and Quicktime 7.3?
    Happy Holidays
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How to add Live Type in the external editor windows?

I was just refreshing myself by one of the FCP dvds from magent media where Even Schechtman show his window of External Editors in System Settings.
I have the latest FCP version but that line which reads "Live Type" in external editor window is missing. Though he didnt discuss anything on the dvd but made me curious of my observation.
How Can I add Live Type message box which can be checked in External editor Window?
    Thanks

This is something specific to FCP4.x ... it does not appear in FCP5.x
Final Cut Pro HD: LiveType does not appear in the External Editors tab
Under some circumstances, the External Editors tab (choose Final Cut Pro HD > System Settings) in Final Cut Pro HD does not display a setting for "LiveType Movie Files."
This can happen if you installed Final Cut Pro HD from a new Final Cut Pro HD disc, as opposed to installing it from an upgrade. If you upgraded from Final Cut Pro 4 to Final Cut Pro HD, you will not have this issue. If you upgraded from an earlier version of Final Cut Pro using an upgrade disc, you will not have this issue.
You can still add LiveType files to the timeline even if LiveType does not appear in the External Editors tab. The behavior may be slightly different, depending on whether you add a LiveType project file or a LiveType movie file to the Timeline.
If you add a LiveType project file (for example, MyProject.ipr) to the Timeline and then choose to open it in an External Editor, the file will open automatically in LiveType as a LiveType project.
If you add a rendered LiveType movie file to the Timeline and then choose to open it in an External Editor, the file will open in the Editor you've selected for Video Files (in the External Editors tab) or in QuickTime Player if none is selected.
In summary, "LiveType Movie Files," only appears if you upgrade to Final Cut Pro HD from an earlier version of Final Cut Pro 4. It is not required in the External Editors beacuse a LiveType project file will automatically open in the LiveType application and a movie rendered from LiveType will automatically open in QT Player.

  • Any way to have more than 2 external editors in LR3?

I like to use Photoshop CS5, DXO Optics and Topaz to edit photos with while working in Lightroom 3.  When I use the "Edit Photo In..."

Although some folks think I respond to "thank you's" just to bump my post count or just to get the last word and/or have my picture up for a while longer... the truth is, my momma raised me to always say "you're welcome" when somebody says "thank you".

  • Setting External Editor Preference

    Hi-
Is it possible to change the preference of "external editor" in iPhoto? I have it set to open in PS4, but I want to change it to another application, I recently purchased. Please advise. Thanks for your time.

You don't need to delete the preference file to reset the external editor. Just click on the menu, move down to select PSE4 and it will ask you to locate the application. Then just locate and choose the other application. That way you can move between different external editors without having to delete and reset the iPhoto preferences. Also if you want to still use iPhoto's main editor as well as the external editor see the following:
Using 2 Image Editors in iPhoto
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and a 3rd party editor without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected the 3rd party editor as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". Then when you Control-click on an image, you can select "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu to edit in your selected editor.
    Do you Twango?

  • Can't open image in external editor, can't export images

    Greetings helpful Aperture experts,
I've just finished transferring aperture from one computer to a replacement unit. Except for being slow on my previous g5, it worked flawlessly at every level. However, now that I've xferred, I can't open Aperture images with an external editor, nor can I export the images to my desktop. Any help along these lines will be gigantically appreciated.
    gaylon

Thanks, ok, here is the info step by step:
When I try to pick any raw image, I am not able to export from Aperture. When I go into the finder and select "show master" then I am able to export from aperture. However, it seems that I am not able to export an image full size. I selected export image to full size jpg to my desktop. Nothing happens except that the window that indicates the image is exporting is open and it says estimated time less than a minute. Yet, there is nothing happening. Additionally, before I transferred Aperture over to my new g5, I could right click an image and had the option to open an image with external editor. Now, no such menu item is apparent. An update, the menu box that lets me know that my image is exporting is still open but there has been no progress. It will just sit there forever, or until I force Aperture to quit. Here's another strange goings on: One of my folders of raw images appear to be pixelated and of very poor quality, even when viewing the masters. The images have already been published by the client in their annual report, so I know that what I am seeing on the screen is not reality. Should I just uninstall Aperture and reinstall? Also, what will this do to the thousands of images in my libraries? Thanks so much for your input and help. In no way am I an expert, but I've been successfully using Aperture since it came out. That was on my G5 dual processor mac with pre intel configuration. Now, these strange things are happening with my new replacement G5 with the Intel processors. Thanks again.
