I can't find my bookmarks on this external hard drive-hWere are they?

The motherboard on my 5 month old HP Desktop crashed. I couldn't care less about the computer itself, but the data on the computer is crucial. I took it into a computer shop and asked the proprietor to back up the PC's programs onto an external hard drive, cost 200$
He told me he'd be able to transfer the bookmarks onto the hard drive, but I don't see them anywhere, nor do I even see Firefox, even thought I used it almost exclusively.
I have hundreds of bookmarks I've categorized. they're quite important to me. Please help.

Hello,
First unhide files and folders:
Then try go to:
"Old Drive":\Users\"username"\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles Click on the profile with “default” in the name to open it in a window.
Then in this folder you can see the bookmarks folder, in the bookmarks folder you can get the most recent backup(.json file) or in your profile folder you can get the places.sqlite and copy to your current profile:

  • Can I get my bookmarks off an external hard drive that I use as a backup? I have Windows 7 Home Edition Premium.

I have been backing up my computer with Windows 7 Home Premium onto an external hard drive. I have been using manual backup when I hook up the external hard drive. I've tried looking for the Firefox folder but can't seem to find it. Was it saved with all the other files and folders and if so how do I access it?

Your Firefox profile would have the data. You can find it at:
    *C:\Users\<Windows login/user name>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile folder>
**The file you want is called ''places.sqlite''
You can copy that file if you want to restore your bookmarks to your current Firefox by going back to ''C:\Users\<Windows login/user name>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile folder>'' and overwriting the current file. Keep in mind, doing this will erase your current bookmarks.

  • My itunes can't find the music on my external hard drive.

My itunes was working fine using my external hard drive. Then I played a song that was not part of that music folder. Now itunes says it can't find any of the songs that are listed. The little evil exclamation point pops up. How can I reconnect to the hard drive without having to start all over?

Thanks for the clarification of check vs click. I guess once I saw the word "double" I stopped reading. I ended up "reloading" the drive to itunes. The interesting thing is that itunes isn't setting the location for the external drive. It is set for a folder under "my music" The actual songs aren't there, but the folders are there. When i put my external drive music to a new itunes library, i did so without copying the songs. So about 100 gig of music is in a folder that is really only about 300mb. I noticed before i restarted that the location was this folder. When i opened it, it was empty. After redoing everthing all of the songs are on the folder. I probably should have just changed it to go to the external drive like you suggested. Just for fun i changed the location to the external and bypassed that small folder. It worked great. It only took about 2 minutes to update, and it works great. I thought i had to use that stupid little folder. Thanks for all of your help!!

  • I can't find my backups on my external hard drive

Windows 7 recognizes my external hard drive, and "Backup & Restore" records that backups are being done on schedule, but I can't find the backups on the external drive, or create a folder on that drive where the backups are saved. Any suggestions?

    Hi,
As it is a Windows 7 related question, it is recommended to post on Windows 7 forum instead of Windows Server forum:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/home?category=w7itpro
In the meantime I'm a little unclear about the question. Whether you select your Drive F, which located on your external hard disk, to save the backup in your backup schedule? please check if there is a folder named WindowsImageBackup on your external drive.
Backup should be stored in this folder. You can try to run your schedule manually to see if a backup will be created, or if any error occurs actually.

  • How can I find the path of an external hard drive?

I am using Virtual Box to install linux to an external usb flash drive. It gives me a list of drives:/ dev/sda, /dev/sda2 (type: ext 4), /dev/sda5 (type: swap). Which one is my external flash drive. This is very import and so I don't write per my current operating system, so please be certain. How can I find out which one is my external flash drive? Thank you!

Open the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder, click on the partition, choose Info, and look at the disk identifier.

    Hello Ali.
Although possibly not related to your problem, I have to remind you that the version of Firefox you are using at the moment has been discontinued and is no longer supported. On top of this, it has known unpatched bugs and security problems. I urge you to update to the latest version of Firefox, for maximum security, stability, performance and usability. You can get it for free, as always, at [http://www.getfirefox.com getfirefox.com].
As for your question, hopefully this support article is what you need:

It's a Western Digital SATA external drive, and I hooked it up with a dock. However when I search for files, or anything for that matter, nothing comes up. How do I search for files?

Download EasyFind 4.9.2. Spotlight doesn't automatically index external drives.

Hi Everyone.  I have an old Mac Book with software updated to 10.6.8.  I have saved a ton of emails in my inbox 'On My Mac'.  There are so many it is slowing down my computer.  Where do I find the folder with all the emails so I can cut and paste them to an external hard drive? Pls.help.  Tks.

Depending on which email client software you use
the files should be in 'your home folder' library, esp.
if you use Mail application.... ~/Library/Mail
Since you don't specify what mail application,
that would most be associated with the file.
I notice there are some items to the right of your post
where it says "more like this' so that may be worth a
look to see if similar issues were answered. Also, the
Help viewer in your system is a searchable database.
Seems that google also brings up fair information, too.
Do you have a complete bootable clone of your entire
Mac system on an externally enclosed hard disk drive?
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • I recently moved my Aperture Library file to an external hard drive.  Can I now create a vault to be saved on my Time Capsule for the Aperture library on this external hard drive?

I recently moved my Aperture Library file to an external hard drive.  Can I now create a vault to be saved on my Time Capsule for the Aperture library on this external hard drive?

One thing to bear in mind, if you are using Time Machine on your Time Capsule and have it set so the TM backup includes your external drive, you will effectively be backing up your Aperture library twice on the same drive, once with Time Machine and once with the vault. This isn't a problem unless you start to run out of space.
Another thing to note, vaults on network drives used to be flaky (i.e. not really supported) and required workarounds to be able to use them. I'm not sure if this has changed, but I just managed to create a vault on my TC ok.

I recently moved all my photos from iphoto to Aperture. I had several iphoto books and cards in my project file. When everything was moved to Aperture I can't find any of the books or card projects. Are they gone or can they be restored?

1 - without specifics I have no idea how to help
2 - the question was "are you trying to use them in iPhoto? " - it sounds like you are - to do so you will have to export them from Aperature and import into iPhoto
3 - for information on how to use them in Aperature then you need to ask about how to use Aperature in the Aperature forum as it does not involve iPhoto

  • Can I install snow leopard on an external hard drive so I can run quicken 2006, and put snow leopard on my imac harddrive

Can I install snow leopard on an external hard drive in order to run my quicken 2006, and install lion on the hard drive of my imac?

You don't need to erase the drive and repartition from scratch. You may be able to add a second partition on the fly. The caveat here is that once you do that you cannot create a Windows partition using Boot Camp. Of course if you have no plans for Boot Camp then it isn't relevant.
To create a second partition on your existing startup volume:
To resize the drive do the following:
    1. Open Disk Utility and select the drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list.
    2. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
    3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.  (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
    4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss.  Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.
Now, you cannot add a new partition that exceeds the amount of contiguous free space at the end of the drive. Disk Utility will fail to add the partition if it cannot find sufficient contiguous free space. If that's the case then you will need to follow your state outline - backup, boot from clone, erase internal, repartition internal, restore backup to one of the partitions (or both in your case.)

  • Can a computer crash disable (break) an external hard drive?

Can a computer crash disable (break) an external hard drive (FW800)?
My mac pro started to see programs crash. First one, that wouldn't 'force quit', then a minute later a second. This had happened before last year, so i started quitting apps to restart. At the end, half of them i succeeded to quit and about 4 wouldn't quit. The finder was frozen/crashed, no dock or apple menu or any menu for that matter. The mouse moved. i could shortcut 'force quit' and 'return' on default OKs.
So i powerbuttoned down. On rebooting, the volumes on the Mercury Elite* unit in question didn't mount. I looked for them with disk utility but nothing. So i then examined the unit. A soft clicking noise was emanating and the power adapter was HOT!
The two drives are now in the mac pro internally and are working fine. But before i took them out, i tested the pins on the power adapter with a voltmeter, according to the schematic on the adapter itself and i got 5,5v on the one side and 13 odd v on the other. Apparently what's supposed to be coming out. (5v and 12v)
Can a powerbutton shutdown shoot electricity through the FireWIre bus? Any ideas?

Can a computer crash disable (break) an external hard drive (FW800)?
No, but it could damage files or the directory structure, so the drive wouldn't mount. Disk Utility should be able to fix it by erasing or partitioning, but you would lose the data on the drive.

You may have bad RAM, or other hardware problems. Have you run the extended Apple Hardware Tests. Boot from the install DVD while pressing "D". Try removing any non-Apple RAM modules.

Some power supplies will put out more than the rated voltage if there is nothing attached, but 5.5 V and 13 V are not high enough to cause damage, anyway.

    No.

  • Can I install a program on an External Hard Drive?

I have an 500 GB external hard drive that I attach to my MBP to store movies and my aperture picture libraries. When I first got it, I created three Mac OS Extended (journaled) partitions, one for movies, one for pictures and the other one for “extras”. I’d like to install Adobe Photoshop on my external hard drive, so I’d like to know if there is a way to make any one of my three partitions operate as if they were a system partition. Can I install an application in an external hard drive? Can I run an application from an external hard drive? Which formatting solution could help me achieve what I want? Is this even possible? Any suggestions?

There are many applications that are happy to be installed on a partition other than the boot partition. However, if the Adobe Photoshop installer does no present you with that option I wouldn't. You could always copy it across post-installation to see if it will work. Updating my present issues.

  • Can I put my library on an external hard drive and use it between two computers?

Can I put my library on an external hard drive and use it between two computers? I have two MBP; I will refer to one as computer A and to the other as computer B. I would like to be able to plug in my external hard drive, boot up iTunes, and if there were any changes made to the library previous to its last time accessed on this compluter, they show up on that computer, regardless of being imported on the other.
A hypothetical example: I import three albums called 1, 2, and 3 on computer A over a week or so. I take the external hard drive and plug it into computer B. The entire library which was visible on A, is visible on B, including albums 1, 2, and 3.
Is this possible? If so, what files need to be copied onto the external? I'm trying some different combinations, trial and error basically. Hopefully someone knows and can answer before I mess up my library. I also want to do this to free up space on my computer. All importing will be done from disc.

iTunes/Preferences/Advanced : point your iTunes to the new location of the Library.
Set "Share on local network" in the Sharing tab, and you or everyone on the local network can play your music.
You make a backup first of the Library.
Move the follwing to the new location:
    /Users/your username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music
    have fun.

I had Leopard on may Mac. I upgraded to Mountain Lion using Snow Leopard. I can't use my video with Mountain Lion. Can I load Snow Leopard on an external hard drive so I can use it with my camera?

First, you cannot do this if you have a Boot Camp partition.
    Second: Create a new partition.
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
After the main menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the hard drive's main entry then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    2. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.

    Third: Install Snow Leopard.
Boot from your Snow Leopard DVD. Follow instructions for installation being sure that before you actually install Snow Leopard you have selected the new partition as your target destination.
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
      1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
      2. Restart the computer.
      3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
      4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo
          appears.
      5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
