I can't find my old backups

Please forgive me. I don't know how to start a new question in the right spot. This is as close as i could find. My hard drive failed in my 2010 Mac Book Pro using Snow Leopard. I had been backing up using Time Machine to a Go Flex Home external hard drive. It connects to router using ethernet.  I replaced the hard drive in my Mac Book. Now I cannot see any of my old back ups in Time Machine.  I can find the hard drive, but it does not show any back ups. I know they are there because It shows the space taken up in the external hard drive.  I have been on the phone for hours with Apple and the manufacturer of the Go Flex. No one can figure it out.  Can someone please tell me how to find the back ups and restore my Mac Book Pro to it's former self.
Thanks!

Thank you for your response Pondini.  I really appreciate it.  I have read your entire site
All 150+ pages?
When the MB first starts and goes from the "Star Wars" display to the question of "Do you already own a Mac" and asks you if you want to transer "from a Time Machine to back up". I clicked on that choice.
That's a different option (and a different display) than the Full System Restore in my previous post.  It sounds like you installed OSX, and when your Mac restarted, you got the options from Setup Assistant.  That should work, if you can connect.
It would not let me connect to my Go Flex. I ended up having to install the OS from the install disk, bypassing this back up choice and using "Do not transfer my information now".
Ok, we can work with that, via Migration Assistant, but you'll need a few extra steps.
I figured out the problem with connecting to Go Flex Home external drive and can now connect, but it still does not show any Time Machine Backups.  Though the space taken up on that drive tells me they are there.
Correct.   As in my previous post, you won't see the backups of the new drive, but the backups of the old one are still there.
I shut down the MB and the external drive.  I connect the GoFlex external drive directly to the MB
If you mean via your Ethernet cable, that won't work.  It's still a network connection, not a connection to a normal "dumb" external HD, via USB, FireWire, or Thunderbolt.  OSX doesn't recognize it as a disk (because there's the NAS interface between them).
If that's not what you mean, please clarify.  You said you had a Seagate GoFlex Home, which according to this is a network drive: http://www.seagate.com/external-hard-drives/desktop-hard-drives/goflex-home/ with only an Ethernet connection.
I have an additional Go Flex external drive that i back my iMac up to. If I do these procedures with that external hard drive, the iMac back ups to and it shows the iMac back up when I choose Select a Back up Source and log in. But nothing shows when i try to do this same procedure with the external drive I used to backup my MB.
Is that an identical drive?  How is it connected (USB, FireWire, or what)?
I can also go into Finder and connect to the external drive and it does not show any backups under Time Machine.
What does it show?  Can you post a screenshot -- that may clarify what we're looking at.
I have read somewhere ( I think on your site and others) that i must first start Time Machine and do one full back up and then the previous back ups will appear.
No, don't do that.  If you do that, you can't then use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to get at the original backups.
I have also been told (by a not so reliable source) that if I do a full back up of my new hard drive MB, then the old Time Machine back ups will no longer be accessible...ever.
No.  They won't be accessible from the Assistants, since they always use the most recent backups, but you can see and use them via other means.  But if you do a new backup, and TM does a full backup, they may have to be deleted soon to make room.
It does seem clear that the old backups are there;  unless they were hopelessly damaged by whatever caused your HD to fail, we should be able to restore your stuff.
Please clarify exactly what the Seagate device is, and any screenshots that may show what's going on.

  • Time capsule name change, now I can't find my old backups

    Hi to all,
I changed the name of my wifi network on my time capsule and while I was at it, I also changed the name of the Time Capsule itself.
Then, after upgrading from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion I noticed that Time machine could not find the back up disk.
When I go to Time Machine I can select the new disk, but it shows oldest backup: none. Uh-oh!
How do I properly reconnect to my Time Capsule without:
         1. doing a full new backup?
         2. losing all my old backups?
One more question, is it possible to see my old Snow Leopard backups after my ML upgrade, or are they no longer accesible?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank You,
    Dean

Scary looking, but most likely, not a problem.  Time Machine just hasn't bothered to look at the backups so it can display that.  See #B3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

         1. doing a full new backup?
         2. losing all my old backups?
You probably aren't really disconnected.  Try Entering Time Machine -- if you see your backups in the timeline on the right, everything's cool.
One more question, is it possible to see my old Snow Leopard backups after my ML upgrade
Yes.   If you just did the simple upgrade, the backups will all be visible, just as before.  If you erased your HD and installed ML, until the next backup, the old backups will appear to be from a different disk, that's no longer attached.  You can see them via the procedure in #E3 of the same link.
If you erased, depending on how you put your data back, Time Machine may automatically "associate" the erased disk with the old backups.  If it doesn't, you can tell it to, per #B6 in the same link (the pink box).

  • HT1414 Can I find an old backup?

I had to restore my Iphone, and it completely restored it to normal. I know for sure that I backed up my phone a month or two ago to this same computer, but it did not use that back up? Then once it was restored, I tried to click restore from a backup, and it only showed then newest back up, which was right now. Is there any possible way to get to the old backup? Should I just take my phone to the Apple store, or what is my best option..Because I literally lost EVERYTHING on my phone. All my contacts, 1600 pictures, and all my messages.

    From HT4946
iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, and choose Run. Type %appdata% and click OK.
    Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata% and press the Return key.

  • TS4036 How can I find my old backups?

i need help finding my backups. when i try to restore my ipod it only brings the recent ones, which i dont want. Can Anyone help me?

If you are signed into the same iCloud account that you backed up to, and don't see the backup in your account I don't know how it could have been deleted without any action on your part.  You could try changing the name of your iPad back to the way it was by going to Settings>General>About>Name, but I doubt that would make any difference.
Assuming your iCloud backup isn't there, your only backup option would be on your computer, if you ever backed it up using iTunes.  You can check by opening iTunes and going to iTunes>Settings>Devices (Mac) or Edit>Settings>Devices (PC) and checking the backups list.  If you see one, you could restore it to your iPad by connecting it to your computer, opening iTunes and going to File>Devices>Restore Backup.
Without a backup, you can still sync any media in your iTunes library to your iPad.  You can also redownload your apps and other purchased media from iCloud if it isn't in your iTunes library, as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519.  Also, when you sign into your iCloud account, any synced data from icloud.com should download to your iPad.

  • HT201269 where can i find the file/backup file on my account?and how to sync data files one by one manually as i have been told to do so to avoid error restore from my existing backup files from your Sydney Apple Store yesterday? i want my old messages, n

where can i find my data/backup file on my account? thanks

The restore from backup process is all or nothing, & if you've been told NOT to restore from backup, there is no supported way to "selectively" restore an iPhone backup. You can use third-party software to "extract" data from your backup:

  • New iMac can't find the old iMac via Ethernet

I just bought a new 27" iMac and I am trying to migrate data from my old iMac.
I have the two machines hooked together via Ethernet and have Etherenet turned on in the source iMac but the new iMac can't find the old iMac. The pinwheel keeps spinning with no success. What should I do here?

    Gramps wrote:
    What FireWire?
There is no FireWire port on the new machine so this is a non-starter.
Unfortunately you didn't read my post very thoroughly. You are correct, the new iMacs do not include FW however your old Mac probably does. For just that reason and more Apple makes a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter which you can use if you opt to use FW Target Disk Mode. You can find the adapter by going to your Apple online store or Amazon carries it to. Here is the Amazon link:
    http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Thunderbolt-to-FireWire-Adapter/dp/B008RXYOKY/ref=sr _1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1366831510&sr=8-1&keywords=thunderbolt+to+firewire+cable
However as I mentioned use TM or a bootable clone with Migration Assistant. If your old Mac was using any verison of OS X from Leopard (10.5.x) on at the very least you should have a  Time Machine backup!
Also use Pondiini's guide as AnaMusic suggests, it's THE GUIDE for using Migration Assistant and Setup Assistant. He has also created excellent guides for Time Machine too.

How can I see the old backups of my previous Macbook done by Time machine in a Time capsule with my new iMac? I've changed from a Macbook to a iMac because that one stopped working and I cannot use it anymore. I've been able to import all the data of the last backup of the Macbook when setting the new iMac, but I cannot access now to the old backups of the Macbook and there are information that wasn't in the last backup and I would like to recover. Thank you very much.

    Yes, you can ..

i have a new pc how can i find my old files

If you are just transfering purchased music then when you iPhone is plugged in, right click on the name of it on the left hand side of iTunes, click transfer purchased.
If you want to transfer all media from your iPhone to your computer, if it isn't all purchased through iTunes, then you are going to have to buy software that will do it.
http://www.mp4converter.net/iphone-transfer-mac.html should work, I haven't used it before but it looks promising and the reviews are good.

  • Where can I find the old OS for my iPhone 3G?

Where can you find the old 3.1.1 software? (I assume that was its number)
The 4.0 is a disaster on mine. I still cannot get it to download any music. It keeps saying it cannot find the address. Yet iTunes plays the songs just fine.
At first my apps would crash everytime I loaded one. After the third time downloading the OS, they finally work. But this is the worst new OS update that Apple has ever given me.
I hope someone knows where I can find the old software because Apple doesn't publicize it.
    Thanks very much.

Search your computer for a file with iphone and 3.1.3 (or 3.1.1 or whatever you were running) in the filename and an extension of .ipsw. It might also be in the recycle bin. You can't do anything legitimate with the file, really, but it would be good to hang on to. Usually iTunes saves a restore to previous firmware file, but unfortunately all the ways for downgrading back to it have been closed over time by Apple because people have been exploiting them to "modify" their phones. But if you can find the file, move it to your desktop or someplace and sit on it until you find a way to restore that you're happy with.

If it was setup using your iPhone and your Apple ID then as far as the iCloud team will be able to find out, you set it up.  Passwords cannot be retrieved.
Change all passwords on accounts associated with your iPhone.
