I can't format my hard drive! Please help!

I had a lot of problems with my Mac mini - related to CD burning, CD reading, ejecting discs, hard drive partitioning, Mac OS X Leopard installation... so I can't tell I am surprised with my new problem, which is...
I need to completely *erase my internal hard drive* on my Mac mini. So I opened Disk Utility, selected hard drive and went to Erase tab - I did everything as instructed by the app - but the "Erase..." button is not active! It's *not going to allow me to erase my hard drive*.
Please does anyone know why? I need to reformat the hard drive and I just don't know how.
Thanks, I hope this problem will be solved soon.

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You can't reformat the drive you booted from, so in order to reformat the internal hard drive, you need to boot from the install disc that came with your mini (or a full retail MacOS install disk). That will provide you with an option to perform a full Erase and Install, performing the reformat and reinstallation in one go, or to open Disk Utility (in the Utilities menu) to perform a partitioning and reformat independently of a reinstall of MacOS.

To delete files from your external HDD, attach it to your MBP and drag the unwanted files to trash and then empty trash.
Then you select the files that you want to transfer by 'drag and drop' to the external HDD and trash the files on your MBP.

  • Can't format external hard drive enclosure

I connected a 250gb external hard drive enclosure to my mac osx 10.3.9. I was told that it was formatted to windows and that i would have reformat it to mac.
I was given instructions to go to Disk Utility, select the volume and click on the partition tab, but a partition tab didn't appear when i pressed it.
I checked out the info for the volume and this is what it gave me:

Here are some directions for formatting and partitioning a HDD:
    Partitioning a Hard Disk Drive
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
    Select language
Go to the Utilities menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select Partition tab in main panel.
Select # of partition in pulldown menu above Volume diagram.
Select 1 partition at a time and resize. (you can type size in the size field in main pane).
Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    Select Erase tab
Select each volume, in turn, under Manufacturer ID.
    Select on Security Options button.
Select Zero all data. (This process will map out bad blocks on your HDD. However, it could take several hours. If you want a quicker method, don't go to Security Options and just click the Erase button.)
    Quit Disk Utility.
Dr. Smoke's FAQ Backup and Recovery has some hints on partitioning.
Please don't hesitate to post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • How can I format external hard drive for both Mac

Hi, I want to use my Seagate external Hard Drive 1 TB on both Mac & Windows. I go to know that FAT 32 supports both but it can not transfer more than 4 GB data at a time. Is there some better alternative? Please suggest.

As said above Use exFAT but do the formatting on a Windows PC as I have had problems of Windows seeing the drive when done on a Mac. Once done on a PC it was seen by both platforms.
Also if you are running XP on the PC you may need an update for XP to see and use exFAT drives. It may be included with XP SP3, i'm not sure, but Microsoft has an update for both XP SP2 and SP3 so that exFAT drives are usable.

  • Can't open disk utility at startup, can't format new hard drive

My hard drive on my 2011 macbook pro recently went out, so I purchased a new one. I plugged it in internally and brought up disk utility in internet recovery, but it didn't recognize the drive. So I tried using an external hard drive reader, but now recovery mode can't be accessed at all, whether I press option or command r after startup, it still gives me the same gray folder with a question mark icon. Is my recovery mode damaged, and is that possible to fix?

You can use an external USB disk/flash drive which has Recovery  (or a full OS - requires a 16GB disk space on a USB flash or a JHFS+ partition with the OSX) on it. Boot from that recovery USB drive. if Internet Recovery worked once, the MBP is already capable of repeating it. It requires an Ethernet or WiFi connection. If neither is available, or is spotty, Internet Recovery will not work. Can you try Internet recovery via Ethernet cable, if all your previous attempts have been via WiFi?
If the drive is not recognized when plugged into the internal SATA bus, either a cable is not plugged in properly (the replacement drive never showed up successfully as per the OP even once, or the drive is DoA). It should be tested externally. Pulling the drive out and putting it back is fairly easy in the 2011/2012 MBPs. The cable could have been damaged during the replacement. The non-drive end of SATA/IR Sensor cable on the main logic board could be loose or damaged.
If you have a external cable SATA-to-USB or SATA-to-FW (very unlikely), format the new drive using a different PC/MAC to make sure it is not DoA. What brand/model is this new drive? Is it an SSD? It may require a FW upgrade.
If there is a second MAC available, a Target Disk Mode boot (press T while powering up the mac with the new drive) may allow the second working mac to format the new drive via Disk Utility.

  • I can't copy files to External Hard Drive : Please help..

    Evening,
I've just bought a Macbook and am just getting to grips with it. This is my first question on this forum...the first of many no doubt.
Problem I've got is that I can copy file's from an external hard drive on to the MAC but I can't go back the other way and copy file's from the MAC on to the external hard drive - it says 'New Folder cannot be modified'.
When I go into 'Ownership and Permission' of the external hard drive it says I can read only.
The Hard Drive is a Octigen USB 2.0 drive if that helps..
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for your help

How confident are you that MacFuse/ntfs-3g is a reliable option for ordinary humans? It is at version 0.2.2, not long out of beta, the FAQ mentions slow write performance and other rough edges (possibly fixed in the current version), and this is a comment by the author as of 1/11/07:
"Small disclaimer: Please note that MacFUSE is a complex piece of software, and it is a work in progress. We believe in releasing early and often, so we're releasing it now so that the community can help us to make it more robust."
I have no need for it whatsoever, but if I did, I would have concerns about using it for a backup drive.

  • Can't format ext hard drive

I'm trying to rescue files from a friend's 2.5" hard drive. It's a WD drive in a USB enclosure. It was formatted and used to store pictures and music. Now when connecting it to a PC or Mac it won't mount--it needs to be initialized. I've removed it from the enclosure and have it in a FW dock. I can see the drive in Disk Utility, but when I highlight it all the erase functions are grayed out.
I can also see the drive with Data Rescue 3, but that application can't get anywhere with the drive. I've had success in the past using this to restore deleted files.
Anyone have any ideas about how to restore files from this disc, or at least format it?

Sometimes faulty controllers can result in odd issues like this. Try connecting the drive to another system (give a Windows PC a try), or try using a different enclosure and if neither of those work then that's more indication the drive itself is suffering from a hardware failure.

  • Can you format your hard-drive while upgrading from Leopard do Snow Leopard (upgrade version)?

    Hello,
I want to purchase Snow Leopard (upgrade version) but I was planning on doing a format when installing it.
    Is it possible?
    Thank you!

Yes, the 10.6.3 white retail disk can upgrade 10.5 to 10.6 via the installer, but you can also hold c  or option key down while booting from the disk and use Disk Utility to Erase and then install 10.6 fresh.
Naturally all programs and user file will be removed, so you need to backup files first and take stock of your programs that will have to be reinstalled again from original sources.
To get the white 10.6.3 disk, call Apple via the phone, it's not sold online anymore, or search Amazon.com or amc related websites for the disk.

However if you choose to upgrade over 10.5, keeping your programs and files (backup files regardless) intact and it proceeds just fine, but want to improve the performance, you can use this method

If your upgrading from 10.5 to get to 10.7 or 10.8, I don't advise it. Software Update to 10.6.8 max and stay there, your machine is too old.

  • Can't format external hard drive.

Hello, i just recently bought a western digital my essential 500gb.
but i am having some trouble reformatting it for my mac, i goto the "disk utility" application and goto "erase" but when i try to reformat it there i am unable to interact with the drop down menu and other fields.

    Do this:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list.Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • My color classic needs a replacement hard drive, please help me find one

The dead drive that was removed is a Conner CP30085E 85MB 3.5in SCSI 50 PIN. Also I have OS 7.1 is there a later system that would work. Note the tools floppy disk boots perfectly.
    Thanks for any info

"...they had a Quantum apple drive 84 mb SCSI drive for $99. Talked to the owner and he said the older apple drives are really getting scarce."
Scarcity doesn't justify egregious price gouging. An 84 MB SCSI hard drive should not cost that much. Did you try an eBay search for a "50-pin SCSI hard drive?" I just did and found some larger drives for far less than either of the prices you got from 4drives.com. It doesn't have to be an Apple-branded drive, although that helps when some third-party drives aren't supported by Apple's disk formatting utilities. You can also check eBay for an OS 7.6.1 retail version/universal installer disk or OS 7.6 and then download the OS 7.6.1 Update. I'd want at least 16 MBs of installed memory to run OS 7.6.1, but your Color Classic is maxed out with a pair of 4 MB SIMMs plus 2 MBs of the 4 MBs of onboard RAM, for a total of 12 MBs.

  • HP dv4t not detecting hard drive, please help!

Hello, its been just a little over a year since I've bought my HP dvt, and of course the problems start as soon as my warranty has ended.. It's been working fairly fine most of the year, and then just all of a sudden while not even doing anything of importance on computer last week I got a blue screen error..
Ever since then I have had so much problems. At first it just started out with closing the screen and reopening it crashed the laptop in a couple minutes..
The main problem now is, it just does not detect the hard drive when booting up! Sometimes (rarely) it does though.. I thought it was a windows problem, so I did fresh clean install of Windows 7 and reformatted the hard drive. Then I ran CHKDSK and it did it stuff and said volume clean at the end.. It worked perfectly for a couple of hours, was able to close screen and open with no problems. I downloaded "Hard drive sentinel" to monitor my hdd health, and it said 90% which is apparently excellent. Yet as I was installing adobe reader, it crashed, got the blue screen of death and has not been able to boot up since
Can anyone tell what is the problem with it? Anyone else have similar problem? I've tried to reformat again with CD but it doesnt even recognize any drive to install on..
Important thing to note is that, in the BIOS screen when i run the HARD DISK TEST, it does recognize it! So i dont understand why it doesn't load the operating system or cant see the hard drive anywhere else!!
What is at fault even? Is the motherboard dead? Althought the bios screen loads fine so does that mean its OK? Is it the hard drive? CHKDSK and the hdd health monitor thing said it was ok right before the crashes..
Please help, I have my first computer science lab in like 2 days with my laptop breaking just a couple days before it with barely any money left to buy a new laptop

Time to replace your Hard Drive. BACK UP NOW!!!
This will be the 3rd HD in a new HP HDX 18 for me (6 months old).
Open up the HD bay and take a look at the model of the HD.
If it is a SEAGATE MOMENTUS 7200.4  they are known to fail in as little as 1 month from install, and do not last more than 6 months.
Google the brand and you will see that most people are reccomending that you remove the SEAGATE product ASAP (data recovery is next to impossible) and replace it with something else.
I had just finished setting up the PC as I wanted it, OS, programs / Bios, software upgrades, then without warning the 2nd HD went.
I lost EVERYTHING in my C drive, was just preparing to do a full BU and Mirror Image after deleting both from my D and External Drive.
HP is replacing one piece of crap with another, I will be shopping for a different brand for the C drive after the laptop comes back from repair.
There seems to be no end to this BS with SEAGATE drives.
    DO A FULL BU NOW!!!

    Semantics, eh?
I should have said "NO, it shouldn't be run without the fans."
(It's all fine, and I appreciate being kept honest.)
I guess it's like not running a machine without a heat sink installed on the processor, some things which we consider not needing to be said must be said.....
The good thing about running without a heat sink is that it is self-correcting, as it were, one way or another.  Actually, it would probably be noticed very quickly by the system in that the CPU die temp would rise to the danger point and the machine would crowbar down on its own, so long as the die resisted fracturing.
That being said, I was somewhat surprised that the missing fan didn't trigger any particular response on my machine.  (I didn't check the system log when it happened, nor did I look at startup diagnostics on System Profiler (incuriosity on my part, I guess) because I just shut down and shoved the fan assembly back in.)   Having spent a goodly amount of my working life in an integration lab dealing with all the things that slipped through the cracks in the floor, I have a reflexive reaction to seeing one of those things pop up, like allowing the machine to go merrily long without a subsystem in place designed to protect the machine.
Reposing much confidence in your advice and assuming that others do as well, at least if they have spent the least little bit of time on these forums, I only added my comment to point out an unexpectedly missing element of protection in the Apple FW/SW world, i.e., the ability to boot without the fan and seem like things are A-OK.
I'm going to go stir the liquid oxygen tank now.  What can go wrong with that?

  • Missing Files in Finder from External Hard Drive - PLEASE HELP

Hi everyone, found myself with a bit of a problem and feeling a little stressed out.
I have an external, Thunderbolt hard drive which seems to be working ok. Suddenly, after a reboot I am unable to see any files on the drive and the finder says 0 files. The disk size however remains the same, indicating the files are still somewhere on the drive. I am running 10.10.1 (14B25).
Before the reboot I was writing to the drive using Compressor, I cancelled the export and then rebooted. Since then I have attempted the following with no luck:
    1. Rebooted the computer / PRAM and SMC reset.
    2. Tried accessing the drive on another computer and account. No luck.
    3. Verified the drive with Disk Utility
    4. Repaired system permissions
    5. The external TB drive is a raid, I have checked the raid with the software for error and no errors are present and the Raid looks in good shape. No red lights, flashing, warning sounds etc.
    6. I re-indexed spotlight.
    7. I made all hidden files visible, and couldn't see the files but i found the following hidden files in the attached picture.
Could someone please give me some advice which could lead to the recovery of the data?
Many, many thanks in advanced, I look forward to hearing form you.
    Best, Jim.

    A small update:
I have tried using DiskWarrior - it sees the files and folders are there, confirms there is no physical disk problem but after a rebuild of the directory there are still no files present.
Is there a preference file or hidden file I could try and remove?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Jim.
