I can't get my AirPort Extreme to work.

I think my son may have accessed airport utility yesterday but not really sure. I have internet on the router but only flashing amber on airport. mac keeps telling me That it can't find a configured air base or that another device is using my computers IP address. I have just managed to rename it but when I click on it in utility's it says-Ethernet unplugged
-internet connection
-no DNS servers.          ( all Amber light next to them)
and and then reverts back to that another device is using my computers IP address. (Device no keeps changing)
IM not overly computer savvy. I need help please.

There are a couple of preliminary things that are important.
IPv6 must be set correctly to link-local only.. . everything is now dependent on this.
And auto doesn't cut it.. in fact auto is the problem with all of this.
This is set in network preferences and you set it for both the wireless and ethernet (whichever you use .. both if possible).
eg wifi
Try again with the setup.. If it still fails you have two choices..
Use iOS version airport utility which seems to work better.. it is free download from app store for iOS v6 and greater.
OR go for a purely manual configuration.
I have to admit this is what I do.. since it is pretty much foolproof.. !!
You need to factory reset..
And it is much better to use ethernet with wireless off if possible.
Then you can run through the method I have laid out on a few threads.. but the screenshots are having issues showing up.
Airtport Utility can't find Airport Time Capsule on either of my 2009 Macs
Here is an earlier one..
Airport Utility shows "unexpected error - please try again" when connecting to Time Capsule
Note also you can do this in isolation from the  network.. and it is sometimes worth doing that way. Anytime the setup in network fails.. factory reset again and do it manually outside of the network.. Then you are MAKING the airport do what you want.. instead of automagical routine getting in the way of sense.
For your setup Bear2win.. you have a router.. so the AE must be set to bridge.. and you must set wireless to create a network.. not extend.. once you setup like this.. update the AE and place it into the network.. there can still be some minor issues to fix up but they should be trivial.
Screenshots of the problems and when it breaks down if you don't get anywhere will help us determine where you problem lies.. expect Mavericks to kick a lot.. it can be a pain as the network ability approaches that of tin cans with wet string.

I can not get my Airport extreme to login to my Drobo exterior HD.., although it definitely recognizes  it.
    Any thoughts?

First check to make sure that you have the correct versions of Apple products to do what you want. The AirPort Extreme (AEBS), needs to be the "square" version with rounded corners, not the older round, domed shaped AEBS.
Next, the AirPort Express (AX) must be the newer "n" version of the product. Check the label on the side of the AX for the model number. This needs to be Model No A 1264.
Next, using AirPort Utility on your PC, select the AEBS and click Manual Setup. Then click the Wireless tab below the icons. Make sure that a check mark is entered next to "Allow this network to be extended"
Then check the AX using Manual Setup. Click the Wireless tab to check that the setting for Wireless Mode is "Extend a wireless network" and that there is a check mark next to "Allow wireless clients"

  • How can I get an Airport Extreme card to recognize a Nintendo DS WiFI?

With an Airport Extreme Base Station the Airport Admin Utility lets you enter the hexidecimal code for the DS (Nintendo calls this the "MAC Address".). The Airport Admin Utility will not open because I do not have a base station. My iMac is connected to the web by ethernet cable and I use this iMac as the base station for my wireless network. Where can I enter the "MAC Address" for my son's DS?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   1st edition

My son got a DS for Christmas. I have the Extreme base station and I had to use WEP security and not WPA. You have to get the WEP key from the Admin software. According to the Nintendo Wifi site, the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection USB Connector is not compatible with Macintosh so you can only use a base station. This is from the Nintendo web site:
Will I be able to use the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection if I have a Macintosh?
As long as you have a wireless router that is compatible with the Nintendo WFC -- and almost all of them are -- then you will be able to connect to the Nintendo WFC from your home. For gamers who do not have a compatible wireless router, and do not wish to purchase one, Nintendo offers the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection USB Connector as an alternative. Unfortunately, this device is not compatible with Macintosh systems. You can still play by connecting at a local Hotspot, or purchasing a compatible wireless router.
    Hope this helps.

  • I can't get the AirPort extreme to recognize a MagicJack connection.  It's an ethernet cable plugged into one of the lan ports and the led won't even light up.

My wireless network is working fine.  I have an AirPort extreme hooked to a cable modem and all other devices around the house can get into the network.
However, I am trying to hook up a MagicJack to the AirPort via an ethernet cable without success.  The AirPort has 3 lan ports for this kind of purpose.  The MagicJack works fine when plugged into my Mac's USB port, but it seems to slow the Mac down too much.
I have tried a new cable, checked that I have power and have rummaged through AirPort Utility, but cannot get the AirPort port to even light up.  I've also restarted and rebooted both the AirPort and the cable modem multiple times.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks

KiltedTim.  You nailed it.  I tried the MJ directly into the cable modem and still can't get a phone line.  I'll see what MJ can do now.
Thanks and thanks to alanoconner for your help.

  • Help! - I can't get my airport extreme 802.11n to work

    Hi everyone,
So yesterday I purchased and attempted to set up my new 802.11n AirPort Extreme, however I could never seem to get it to establish a connection (even though the ethernet clearly works, as I am typing this message with it now connected directly into my imac). The airport said that it created a network and the light was on a solid green, indicating that it was working properly.
So, in my infinite wisdom I tried to monkey with all of the settings in the AirPort Utility. In the process of doing this, I tried to click the "join a network" instead of "create a new wireless network." Now when I try to find my wireless airport, it can't even locate any AirPort devices
I have tried to "reset" my AirPort Extreme by inserting a pen into the reset button and holding it down, but it does not seem to work. Is there any other way to reset this device back to it's initial factory settings so that I can try to set it up again?
If anyone has any ideas, I could certainly use the help.
    Thanks,
    Sean

Sean, hold in the reset button on the AirPort Extreme until you see the amber light begin to blink more quickly. Keep holding another 3-4 seconds when you see this and then release the reset button.
That should allow Airport Utility to "see" the device so that you can reconfigure it.
When you say that the ethernet works, I assume this the connection from your modem. If you have a cable modem, you will need to completely reset it so that it will associate with the AirPort Extreme.
Push the reset button on the cable modem
    Power it off
Pull the battery if it is easily accessible
Leave it off at least 20-25 minutes or longer before you power it back up
This information above assumes that you have a cable modem. If you have a different type of connection, post back on your progress.

  • Can't get my Airport Extreme's HD to show up for TimeMachine...

Hi, I have a new Airport Extreme Simulanteous Dual Band with an external 1TB HD formatted for MacOS Journaled, etc.
I can see the disk, named "TMBkup" in the airport utility but it won't show up in my choices of HDs in the TimeMachine preferences dialog box.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

  • I cannot get my AirPort Extreme to work with my new BT fibre modem which has replaced my Draytek modem.

I use to use a Draytec modem with my AirPort Extreme. All worked perfectly and the internet connection was configured as connect using PPPoE. Now I have a replacement mode fro BT to allow a fibre connection I can no onager get on the internet. What do I need to change. Do I need to change the internet connection on the AirPort Extreme to DHCP.

Yes, I do think it is no longer using PPPoE.. but the IP is configured to the fibre to ethenet or vdsl port.
You might need to ring the ISP and get them to give you details.
Anyway it is easy to try.. plug the Extreme WAN port to the new modem and test with dhpc. Check that you get a public not private IP address.

  • How to get an Airport Extreme to work behind a wired Router????!!!!!!

Hey all major issue I am at my inlaws and they have a cable modem going into wired linksys router in their basement where the cable comes in and then distributing out through the house ethernet to key areas. Recently they have gotten wireless laptops and want to setup their airport extreme off of one of these ports so they can sit out on their deck and use the net.
I tried the auto-configuration and get no internet connectivity, occasionally it comes through at like 4 k/s(using the WAN port, the Lan port gives no connection like it should). If I plug directly into the same port I get 8MB down and 1MB up, so I am confident its not the ethernet coming to the location.
Additionally, if i take the extreme downstairs and run it form the cable modem and do the autosetup it works beautifully as well.
So obviously the autosetup isnt working for the Airport running behind the router why? I have tried to muss with the settings, run it in bridge mode and such but to no avail.
Any advice on how to do this? The base is updated to its latest firmware 5.7.

I have been using an AEBS connected to one port of my D-Link Router for years. 2 months ago I have upgraded to OS 10.5 and have had no problems with having wireless computers connecting. I just decided to change my Security to WPA and after the Airport Utility (V.5.3.2) did the settings UPDATE, I haven't been able to connect via WIFI. I had all WIFI IP address be in the 10.0.1.1 range, and now I have tried everything I can think of to get it to work like I did but no luck.
I should mention that my router is set for static IP because of webcasting and other requirements.
I have searched and asked and can't solve the problem.

  • I can't get my Airport express to work in client mode with my speedtouch base station?

Im trying to add my Airport Express to my exisiting wireless network - which runs from a speedtouch base station. I only want to use the AP to use air tunes but i cant seem to get it running in client mode. The interface on the Airport Utility seems different to that described in the online help here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1731
Everytimes i try to add it to an exisint network the AP dissapears on its restart. Any ideas if what im trying to do is possible. I've tried creating the network initially with the ethenet cable connected - which works, but then when its detatched although the AP status light stays green it disapears from from the network and i cant stream.
thanks for any help and advice.
    Wilkie

In order for the AirPort Express to join another wireless network as a "client", three conditions must be met in the setup of the Express. It must be provided with......
    1) The name of the wireless network that is to be joined
    2) The exact type of wireless security settings that the wireless router is using
    3) The wireless network password
Most users have no trouble with 1) and 3), but few know the exact type of wireless security settings that their wireless network is using. So, they accept a default setting on the Express, which does not match up with their network.
Bottom line....unless you know the exact type of wireless security settings that your wireless router is using...the Express will never join the network. The setup ends with an error message and you have to start all over again with another try....which will fail as well, etc.
If you know the exact type of security settings that the Speedtouch router is using.....we can provide you with a step by step setup guide.
If you do not know this, or are unsure....you will need to get into the setup menus for the Speedtouch router to locate the wireless settings. Or, if the wireless router was provided by your ISP, they may be able you with this information.
Post back with that info and we will proceed.

  • Can't get two airport expresses to work simultaneously

Just added a second airport express (both 802.11n, both updated) solely to listen to music from iTunes. Non apple router. Both are working fine separately with green light on but when I try to play through both at once (using "multiple speakers") there are long disruptions or "drop outs" after a few seconds of playing.
Can anyone please help. Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the discussions!
You will need to do some troubleshooting to see if you can isolate the cause for the drop outs. Since the troubles began when you added the second Express, move the second device close to your router and plug in a pair of headphones to see if the signal is steady at that location. If so, move the Express further away in several steps. Keep testing at different locations. If you start to hear the drop outs, that would indicate one of two things:
    1) There is not adequate wireless signal strength in the area where the 2nd Express is located. You might investigate to see whether your router manufacturer offers a wireless extender to provide more signal strength in a remote location. It is also possible to connect the Express to your router using ethernet. If you can't run an ethernet cable to the Express location, take a look at ethernet powerline adapters to accomplish the same task.
    2) Interference from a cordless phone or another wireless network is causing problems. Download Air Radar and use it's Scan function to locate other wireless networks in your area. The application is not free, but there is a free trial period. If you see any other networks on a close channel to your wireless network, change the wireless channel on your wireless router to another channel that is as far away as possible from the channels you see.

  • I cannot get my AirPort Extreme to factory reset

I can't get my AirPort Extreme to factory reset

Pull the power cord from the back of the AirPort Extreme
    Wait a few minutes
Hold in the reset button first, and then keep holding it for an additional 10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the AirPort Extreme
Release the reset button after the hold period
Allow a full minute for the AirPort Extreme to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
If the AirPort Extreme is functioning correctly, it has now been reset.
If you try this procedure a few times and the Extreme still will not reset, then you may have a defective Extreme. Take the device to an Apple Store.....if you have one near you.....so they can take a look.  Or, contact Apple Support directly.

  • HT4145 How can I use an Airport Extreme to act as a Range Extender for an Alcatel One Touch Y800Z WiFi modem/router? I get a message saying it cannot be extended. Thank you. Arup

How can I use an Airport Extreme to act as a Range Extender for an Alcatel One Touch Y800Z WiFi modem/router? As we live in a rural area and our landline broadband speeds are awful, I have moved on to a 3G provider in the UK (EE/Orange) and set up the wireless modem which is working very well with an iMac. I have an Airport Extreme base station which was previously connected with an Ethernet cable to the landline router, and two Airport Express stations as Range Extenders. I would now like to use the Airport Extreme and the two Express stations to extend the range of the Alcatel WiFi device. I have tried automatic and manual set up with the Airport Utility but at the crucial step for selecting a network to extend, although the WiFi device is recognised, I get a message saying it cannot be extended.
Thank you for any help you can provide.
    Arup

This is a problem with a lot of cheap end wifi hotspot like devices.. sometimes you can just swap the sim out to a real 3G wireless router.. that is a better approach IMHO than wireless repeater ever will be.
    In the meantime..
Have a go with the suggestion.. place the express as wireless bridge. With a computer connected to the wifi from alcatel unit.. (I am amazed Alcatel still are in domestic market.. I thought they sold out). Set the express to join the wifi.. you do this in the airport utility.. old one is easy.. but in v6 you have to trust to luck so to speak and hope the auto setup works.. tell us if you have trouble.
With the Express bridging.. you can then plug it by ethernet into the TC.. which will be in router bridge..
    ie
You can then run the connection from wireless or ethernet on the TC.. and it will relay back to the alcatel for internet.. all a bit dodgy but who knows.. it may give you what you need.
Wireless repeater is never particularly reliable in my experience. I would avoid it if possible.

I recently transferred my internet service to another state.I have not yet moved my imac, just my pc laptop. I cannot get my airport extreme wireless router to work. The green light stays lit when everything is connected but I can't connect to the internet. Any suggestions?

I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
If the above steps do not solve the problem, start over with step 1 above, but then perform the next steps between steps 1 & 2. above.
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Continue with step 2 in the first set of steps.
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

I have not done a factory reset, I was trying to find out if I had some setting configured wrong first.  I figured I'd just make things worse if went through a reset!
