I can't get my Mem using USB based card reader can't be recognized by iMac

I have posted this question at the Digital Forum but haven't got a response.
I am wondering if anybody has or is using Image Browser from Canon to upload photos. I have been using it for many years on Windows XP; however, now that I have migrated to Mac I'm having a tought time to be recognized by my iMac.
The card is attached to a card reader that is USB based if I plug into my XP it get's recognized in no time and I can upload using Image Browser from Canon (don't care to use Iphoto, since it requires to upload and not as a viewer).
After many attempts it the Mem Card gets recognized but:
a) it takes a lot of effort to open the JPG files
b) it doesn't let me open, view, upload the image files using Image Browser (XP no problem)
BTW the card rearder is a small one, it looks like Mem Stick USB. So I'm wondering do I need to do something prior to plugging into the iMac? I was under the impression a Mem stick is a Mem stick.
It's clumsy whenever I tried to get on line but that is another story.
I realize that because I have formatted my Ext HD as FAT32 that is going to be slow very very slow, but don't want to format as Journal for the Mac cuz I'm still have my XP laptop and don't plan to get rid of my security blanket.
So is anybody here has encountered the same and if so any suggestions please.
Thanks

A Mem Stick may be a Mem Stick and that says nothing about either the file format the camera is using or Image Browser wants to use, or the Stick's health including whether it's hopelessly fragmented from long use.
If "After many attempts it the Mem Card gets recognized…" that seems to indicate there isn't a basic incompatibility but what card reader is this and what does the maker say about drivers on your version of Mac OS?
Again if "After many attempts it the Mem Card gets recognized…" what's different between successful and failed attempts, please?

  • Can anyone recommend a USB CF card reader that will work in my Macbook Pro Retina? My USB card readers for CF cards do not work

At present, the only way I can load photos from a CF card to my new Macbook Pro Retina is by loading them onto an external hard drive via an old PC that can accept either of my USB card readers, then plugging the external hard drive into my MBP. Neither the USB card reader or the cable that comes with the Canon HDSLR camera will transfer photos directly to my MBP. I find it unbelievable that I have to go to a PC to load photos because I can't do it with my new MBP.
Has anyone found a reliable USB CF card reader, or one that connects via thunderbolt or HDMI, at any price, that will work directly with the new MBP Retina?

    This is what we need:
Location photoshoot - we use the Canon EOS 5D  Mk II still camera & the Canon FX100 pro camcorder.
CF cards are: SanDisk Extreme UDMA & SanDisk Extreme Pro UDMA 6 for video (I think they are both Type II) My Mac recognises them both as FAT 32 format
My MBPRetina is on the latest version of Mountain Lion OSX 10.83
the files from the camcorder will transfer to my MacBook Pro Retina directly via the camera's cable but it is quite slow & it means I cannot continue to film while downloading files but this we can live with.
the files from the still camera Canon EOS 5D  Mk II will not transfer directly via the camera's cable - have yet to get the Canon software to download, but via the camera's cable will not help anyway as we need to have the still camera free to keep shooting.
We need to be able to take out the CF card from the first part of the shoot & download the still shots while just on the Macbook's battery power, while we insert a fresh CF card back into the still camera to continue with the next part of the shoot simultaneously (while the first card is downloading.)
The files from the first part of the shoot will be both in RAW (.CR2) & Jpeg format. We just need to quickly transfer the jpegs, then I do a quick sort, batch the best ones as black/white images, & use these in a client slideshow immediately after part 2 of the shoot.
Obviously we need fast data transfer speeds, & rely on the MBP's battery power while on a location shoot.
The card readers I have tried are an older specific CF card reader branded as Palm, & a USB 2 multi card reader branded as Travel Flash. With both readers, the lights on the readers flash on & off, & the MBP recognises the card & the files will even appear both in Finder & in i-Photo, so it starts importing, then aborts with an error message saying:
'The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “” can’t be read or written.
    (Error code -36)'
    & another message saying:
'the disk was not ejected properly'.
So it appears the MBP does read the CF cards but the card readers don't stay connected, no matter what angle I put them on or however many times I re-connect them.
Yes, they are probably cheap & I want to buy a decent one.
    So, in summary:
the card reader needs to work when the MBPR is only on battery power (I read in some forums that some USB card readers aren't so reliable on the laptop's battery power)
the card reader needs to be quite fast. I have read the USB 3 readers won't read CF cards at higher than USB 2 speeds. Is this true? Are the firewire connected ones faster, & if so, are they still reliable on the MBP's battery power?
From research, it appears my problem is associated with my specific model of Mac & platform, being MacBook Retina on Mountain Lion OSX Version 10.83. If any of the recommended card readers have been successful with this, plese let me know.
Thanks heaps for the suggestions so far.

  • Can I use a smart card reader to avoid typing the master password?

Does anyone know if there's a way of using some physical card reader to avoid having to type the 'Master Password' when prompted for one?
I understand some people use CAC readers to access certain sites but I'm wondering if there exists some extension/software that can be used to achieve this.
If relevant, I'm running Firefox 4.0.1 on Windows 7 x64.

  • USB SD Card Reader

I have just purchased a USB SD card reader/writer to transfer pictures etc. from my desktop to my Palm Treo. When I plug the card and reader into the USB port, both the reader and the card mount, and I can view pictures and other files from my Palm; but I can't copy files to the card. Looking at the info of the disk reveals that I have read-only permission, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to change that. Has anyone had any luck changing SD card permissions on a Macbook? The rest of the internet is coming up short on this question...

Same problem here. After chatting Mr Friendly, the on-line Apple Man I have the same problem.
I use many card formats, Sonys Stick mostly, and this is my first time with these 'SD' cards.
I have NO user permissions at all for a card I bought for my new DC camcorder.
It was formatted first as I always do, the icon is 'Untitled' on the Desktop. 'Get Info' shows no user privileges... no re-naming... nothing at all.
I can't even drag/drop files to the trash. I have to open the camcorder and manually format or delete every time.
Where IS that clever Mac God when you need one?

  • Broadcom USB Smart Card reader not working

After upgrading my Vista Business SP2 (32-bit) to Windows 7 Ultimate RC (32-bit) my Broadcom USB smart card reader does not work any longer (Dell Latitude E6400 with built in smart card reader).
The newest available driver from dell support was already tested (Broadcom, driver date 09/23/2008, version 1.0.0.1, digitally signed WHQL, released by dell in March 09), but the device can not start (Error code 10) with Windows 7.
With the Microsoft WUDF Driver (Usbccid, driver date 06/21/2006, version 6.1.7100.0) the device starts but whenever I insert my smart card an additional device is detected (other device - smart card) but no driver found - Error message is: The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28).
What else can I try to get this reader working again (with vista sp2 the smart card reader was working fine with the broadcom driver)?

I have also an USB card reader that works fine on XP PCs but Win7 does not recognise it, can msft make a sd reader driver that works pls.
    Hi
Sorry, but the way the industry works is that Microsoft develops Windows and Hardware manufacturers develop drivers for their products. Microsoft does maintain a complete division (MSDN) that is dedicated to assisting hardware and software manufacturers in developing their products for compatibility with Windows.
All of the drivers that are contained on the Windows installation disk and on Windows Update are placed there by the manufacturers of the devices. This is a service that Microsoft provides to help these manufacturers to distribute their drivers.
    What you can do.
    1. Check with the computer manufacturer for updated drivers for that device. This is your best source, since the computer manufacturer builds, tests, and sometimes develops their own, custom drivers to work with the hardware on their PCs.
    2. Try to determine the name and manufacturer of the device using Device Manager and MSInfo32. Once this information is found, try to find that manufacturers website and look for the latest compatible drivers.
    3. Check to see if there are any users forums on the PC manufacturers or device manufacturers websites. Ask there about any known issues with this particular hardware device or if the device is no longer supported.
    4. If the drivers are found but are only available for previous versions of Windows, install the drivers using the Windows Compatibility Mode. HOW TO: Install a Hardware Device Driver using Compatibility Mode
Right now, we are in a unique situation since we are using an operating system that is still in the pre-release phase. Many hardware/software manufacturers will be ofrficially supporting their products for Windows 7 until after the General Availability date of October 22, 2009.
    Hope this helps.
Thank You for using Windows 7

  • Importing video from Nikon D90 to iMovie by USB memory card reader

    Hi,
I've been trying to import the videos in my camera (Nikon D90) using memory card reader (USB).
I always transfer the photos to computer using memory card reader and my new Mac seems to be happy to import the photos to iPhotos. That's a good news!
However, when I try to transfer the video from D90 to Mac using the same card reader, the videos go to iPhoto straightaway. I can't import the video to iMovie! I can find the videos in Finder (All Movies), and iPhoto, but can't transfer them to iMovie. Can anybody tell me how to do this? .. if it's possible.

You can download a free copy of ViewNX2 from the Nikon Website. This software will install a program called Nikon Transfer 2 and will take over the auto loading from iPhoto when you insert a memory card into your card reader. Then you need to import the footage manually into iMovie 11. But before you do that, ViewNX2 has a built in movie editor to allow you to trim the footage before import.
    Hope this helps..

  • USB Smart Card reader

I want to interface with a USB smart card reader to make a cash card system. I'm not going to be writing any code that goes on the smart card itself, just code that runs on a PC. Is the Card SDK what I'm looking for or am I way off base? If it isn't, where should I be looking?

You can then use the javax.smartcardio package to communicate with a PC/SC smart card device. You should able to find examples online. You only need the JCDK if you plan to develop on card code.

  • In my macbook pro hdmi, usb & SD card reader not working

In my macbook pro hdmi, usb & sc card reader not working.
i have tried the SRM reset done, till not working started.
Could you please resolve this problem,

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Simply take it to an Apple Store or reseller if it's in warranty. Your Mac will be repaired or replaced for free because it looks a hardware problem rather than a software issue.
If it's not in warranty, hold Command and R keys while your MacBook is starting up, and reinstall OS X. If it doesn't work, you can't do much more to solve the problem

  • Cannot eject usb camera card reader from iphoto

I have a card from my Nikon camera plugged into a USB card reader. The photos import into iPhoto just fine. When I try to eject the card readers using the eject icon in iPhoto or drag it to the trash in iPhoto or irhgt click the icon on the desktop and try to eject or use Finder, the card reader icon disappears for a second, then iPhoto downloads its photos again. There is never enough time to safely remove the card reader.
    Help!!!

I tried that once and the memory card was damaged - couldn't use it again. Luckily my photos had already been imported.
    Thanks.

  • Old extreme n, and usb media card reader

hey, i am trying to hook up an iogear usb media card reader, a usb memory stick, and a portable 2.5" hdd to the belkin mac mini usb hub, and the hub to the old airport extreme n base station.
the usb stick and the hard drive are recognized without any problems.
the media card reader shows up in the disks tab of the airport utility, but it doesn't show something is connected to the card reader when a card is added. it just keeps showing 0MB in all four slots.
usb hub is powered, card reader is not.
when i connect the reader to the AEBS directly i get the same result, so i don't think the hub is the problem, since it runs other two devices flawlessly.
usb card reader works fine when connected directly to any computer as well.
any ideas? is it not possible to connect a card reader to the base station?

    Unfortunately not.
The only devices that work are printers, disk drives and hubs.

  • My USB CF Card reader is not mounting on my 2.5 GHZ Intel Core i5 iMac anymore. It was last week and worked fine to get pictures from my camera. Now it won't mount. I have tried another card reader and the same problem exists. Also tried different cards..

    Hi
My USB CF (Compact Flash) Card reader is not mounting on my 2.5 GHZ Intel Core i5 iMac anymore.
Last week it worked fine to get pictures from my camera but now it won't mount at all.
I ejected it in the correct way rather than just disconnecting it but now i cannot get it to remount!
I cannot even see it in the disk utility or system profiler.
I have tried another card reader (a brand new one bought today) and the same problem exists. I've also tried different cards to see if that made a difference and they still arent being picked up on the Mac.
I have done all the usual things like rebooting, unplugging all other USB devices and then trying but nothing has worked.
I'm a photographer and I'm at my wits end here. I know the cards are fine as i have been using them without issue and they are also new.
Note: If I plug the camera in directly to the Mac, the Mac picks it up just fine as it always has done. Its just the card readers that it wont pick up anymore.
If anyone has any ideas at all other than the following (my so called friends advice) you'd earn my undting love:
    Buy a PC
Use the camera (Thats why i bought the reader in the first place - importing RAW files from the camera is SLOW!)
Replace your CF cards (I have three 8GB cards two of which i had never used til today and they dont work either!)
Buy a new card reader (this is the 5th one in two days - none work on the Mac)
    Many thanks in advance!
    LIsa

OK, restart in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. It's possible one or more is corrupt. To restart in Safe Mode when you hear the start up tone hold down the Shift Key until you see a progress bar. Let it fully boot then restart normally and test.
Also I am assuming you have checked Finder - Preferences  - General and see what boxes are checked in "Show these items on desktop." You can also mount an item in Disk Utility, simply highlight it and then look in the File menu for Mount.....

  • (solved) get X to use my PCI card instead of onboard graphics.

I'm trying to install arch on an old P4 dell (dimension 2350) and given the specific requirements and restrictions of this given beast I'm having a bit of trouble getting X configured.  (I'm turning it into a replacement for my modded xbox running xbmc, yes, I know it won't play hi-def)
    Here's the setup:
    - It has onboard graphics (intel) which I don't plan on using since it only has vga out.
    - I've installed my video card (ATI radeon 9250 - hey it's the best standard pci card I could find)
    Here's the problem:
    - Everything works with the onboard intel chip
    - If I try to plug my monitor in to the ATI card it (the monitor) dims and doesn't register as being attached.\
    - I've tried turning off the onboard graphics in my bios but the only options are "onboard" and "auto" so it's currently set to auto.
    More fun:
    - The fun part is that I plan on using the ATI card's svideo out to my tv once it's set up, I'm just trying to get the monitor to work while I configure everything.
I'm considering trying to run an ubuntu live disc and seeing if I can copy over the xorg.conf file that gets generated.
    Any ideas?
    **edit
After some searching I've got it working.  Apparently linux still reads onboard cards with this pc/bios because of the piss poor bios.
i added 'blacklist agpgart' & 'blacklist intel_agp' (without quotes) to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist, set video to 'auto' in the bios, plugged the monitor into my card and rebooted.
    sweet.

  • Using USB memory card ready boost for RAM???

I recently purchased a 16 gb  HP memory card for my laptop, in hope to replace my old 4 gb HP memory card I was using priorly for it's ready boost capability. When  checking my computers performance, I noticed one of the places I most commonly lag in is my RAM. So my question is, is there any way I can use any part of the memory I'm gaining from my ready boost in the place of RAM capability?

    Hello william_the22nd,
Unfortunately, you will not be able to use the memory card this way.  You don't mention which notebook you have, or operating system.  Perhaps the troubleshooting steps in this document will help you improve the speed and performance.  Please select the link below which corresponds with your OS.  Please let me know if this helps.

  • USB memory card reader not working since latest security update

Hi, I have an iApp CR-e500 multi-format memory card reader; worked great prior to the latest security update. Now every time I plug it in I get the following errors in the console:
Oct 19 03:37:00 dachshund kernel[0]: USBF: 1496.818 AppleUSBEHCI[0x1b4d800]::Found a transaction past the completion deadline on bus 91, timing out!

The reader works fine on my office Windows laptop and my USB pendrive still works on my Mac, so the USB ports appear to be functional; they just don't like this thing anymore.
Was there a USB driver change? If so is there anything I can do to sort this? I suppose I could just buy a new card reader if someone can confirm one that works with the latest security update of 10.4.11, that would be great.
Alternatively if Apple could please loosen up whatever they tightened in their USB drivers that would be nice as well...

Disregard. Looks like it's the memory card I'm trying to mount; not working on the Windows machine either.
    Sorry!
