I can't get my SSD to boot

Hello everyone. I've been searching for an answer to this for over a day now, and although I find people talking about having the same problem, doesn't seem like anyone actually posts a SOLUTION on what to do!
I recently purchased this
http://www.amazon.com/Intel-Series-2-5-Inch-240GB-SSDSC2CT240A4K5/dp/B009SIJ7G8/ ref=wl_it_dp_o_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=16J6Z635GUHW4&coliid=I2HWDSOO40BLXP

Capacity: 240GB
Interface: SATA 6.0 Gb/s
NAND Flash: MLC
MTBF: 1,200,000 Hours
Form Factor: 2.5 inch SATA
Bandwidth: 500 MB/s Sequential Read and 450 MB/s Sequential Write
After reading a number of reviews from Macbook uses saying it worked really well for them, etc.
This is my Macbook:
MacBook Pro 13.3"
Processor:
2.53GHz Core 2 Duo (P8700)
Model Number:
A1278
Production:
Jun 8, 2009 - Apr 13, 2010
Factory:
China
Production Year:
2009
Production Week:
31 (July)
Production Number:
996
I recently upgraded to 8GB of RAM of that makes any difference.
Okay, so I want to take out my 500GB HDD and replace it with the SSD and just do a clean OS install. I want nothing from the old harddrive. Okay, so I installed the SSD, put in my Startup Disk (OS X 10.5.7 that originally came with my computer).. nothing. Doesn't recognize the SSD at all. Tried EVERYTHING. It just doesn't recognize it.
Okay, took the SSD out and hooked it up to this:
http://www.amazon.com/Vantec-NexStar-2-5-Inch-External-Enclosure/dp/B002JQNXZC/r ef=wl_it_dp_o_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=16J6Z635GUHW4&coliid=I3LYDWCJQTUETZ
Plugged it into my computer (with my old HDD in). Doesn't recognize it at all. The green light is on, but nothing is happening. Tried opening disk utility. Nothing.
I read some posts saying this is a SATA firmware problem and all these other different things, but no one actually posts what to actually do about it! Should I just return the Intell SSD and get another one?! I don't understand what the problem is here.
Thanks so much!

Hi,
If you successfully created the external HP recovery media then it's safe to delete it off the old HD.
A good backup practice is to take boot drive images at periodic intervals that you can live with should your SSD fail.  The same would hold true for backing up your data.

  • How can i get my Powerpc to boot from a PCIe drive

Hi, I just upgraded my PowerMac G5 Quad 2.5 with 16GB of ram & two 1.8 tyrabite drives. My problem is, I also installed a Velocity solo x2 PCIe card
for a solid state drive. the system recogizes the drive but I'm having a problem with getting my system to boot from that PCIe card drive. Please if anyone
can help me I greatly appreciate it.

If you cannot get the ssd to boot, you can move folders to the ssd.
Unix command ln  -- The Unix make link command. I have a copy of virtual PC.  It insists on using a folder in my documents folder for saving all of the virtual machine information.  This folder is rather large.  I used the terminal command ln to move the folder to my external hard drive.  Virtual PC had no problem with this move.  I do not think that Mac applications notice the ln redirects.
You can use the Unix command ln to redirect a reference to folder on your small partition to a folder on  your larger partition. You need to be careful when you pick the folder. You best avoid any system folder, those folders needed at startup. You could pick some user data folder.   Home folders, that is folders in /Users, are a good choice.  Please try this when you have a full backup.
mac harddrive > Applications > Utilities > Terminal
    man ln
    ln -s target source

let's make like my Christmas card folder is on my desktop and make like the names is cards.
    mac $ ls /Volumes

  • HELP I can't get macbook air to boot!!

Help!! I am traveling around the world right now and I can't get my MBA to boot up.  I shut it down by selecting shut down, after closing all windows.  A few hours later went to turn it on and nothing!  I am so frustrated! When I press the start button I get the chime, but the screen doesn't light up.   I can feel something whirring, and the logo on the back lights up but that is it.  I have tried repeatedly starting it and turning it off, nothing. Have tried holding the alt button and the start button at the same time, nothing.
I am getting on a plane in the morning and going to Nicaragua so I can't call Apple nor can I go to a service center.  Right now it is 7:45 PM in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and the computer service centers are closed.
I purchased the MBA in January of 2014 so it is less than 1 year old.  I purchased extended warranty recently.  I have the latest OS system installed, I have no USB sticks to start from.  All I have is the MBA.  Slapping it doesn't help Neither does yelling at it .  Any suggestions as to what I can do? This is the first time this has happened. I haven't dropped the computer.
    Thanks so much!

The easiest thing to do is to reset the SMC:
Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. The power adapter indicator light may cycle off / on once.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

Please verify that the programs (Ubuntu, Mint, Boot-Repair, etc.) you are attempting to use, support the Atheros AR8161L gigabit ethernet controller natively. Not all operating systems and software programs support every network device and/or configuration otut of the box. Many times, specific drivers must be loaded or injected into the OS for a device to function properly.

  • Where can I get the source for boot of netinstall CD

Sorry for the title, I wasn't able to write it out fully due to length constraints.
So in an attempt to fix https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=139659 on my own, I thought I'd go and look at what the install CD does as it is booting up the version of Linux found on the netinstall CD.  It first creates a Linux environment where you can then run AIF.  I mounted and looked through the .iso of the installer that I used, but I couldn't find any useful config files for the boot process, so I'm thinking that it is in a binary form. I found the AIF source code, but that is for after the system boots up from the CD, and my problem happens before then.
So where can I get the source code for the live CD portions that *aren't* AIF?

It's a hybrid ISO, with a filesystem and a MBR slapped onto it which you can either write to a CD or "dd" to a HDD or USB stick.
The bootloader is called ISOLINUX (which is part of the Syslinux project). You can find the "boot" files in the "isolinux" folder. For studying ISOLINUX itself, you have to shimmy on over to the Syslinux website. It's an awesome project. I ditched GRUB 2 for it and now use it as my primary bootloader. Much, much easier to work with.

  • I can't get my mac to boot off the install discs

I'm trying to boot off of the install disc, but I can't get the computer to even see it. I've tried the c, d and options keys. I've repaired permissions. I don't seem to have a firmware password. When I hold down d it tests and finds no problems with the hardware. When I hold down c it goes straight to the hard drive. When I hold down the option key during restart the only option it gives me is the hard drive - no disc. I've tried two different keyboards, one of which is a mac. I'm using disc 1 of the two disc set to install mac os x that came with the computer when I bought it. I've also tried disc 2 (since I've been trying everything I can think of.)
I'm out of ideas. Help appreciated.

If you were able to boot from the d key to the Hardware Test (for a G5, this should have been from the second disc -- but you don't mention how you got to the AHT) that rules out a bad optical drive or firmware password. The only thing, then, that comes to mind is a damaged install disc, disc one.

  • U310 encrypted w/ PGP WDE can't get to BIOS or boot menu

The Lenovo U310 Touch was encrypted using PGP Symantec Encryption Desktop 10.3.2. Everything seemed to work fine until I used a windows 7 repair CD to restore an older system image back to this drive.
Now when the ideapad starts up, I still get a symentec encryption username and passphrase screen. When enter in the username and passphrase, I get past it but I see Windows Boot Manager, Windows failed to start. Statux 0xc000000f and then anything that I do, I get thrown back to the PGP screen, and this error screen.
If I use Fn+f12, or Fn+f2, or Fn+f11, I again and thrown back to the PGP screen.
If I shut the system off, and start it with the novo button, I see a menu that says Normal startup, bios setup, boot menu, system recovery. All 4 options return me back to the PGP Encryption screen, and then back to Windows Failed to start.
How can I get to the BIOS, or sys recovery, or even boot from external CD drive so I can get a clean build of an OS?

Welllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll llll, the thing was booting so fast I never caught the real problem.  (Almost ashamed, since I used to do this in a former life 20 years ago).  The keyboard was DOA.
I finally caught it when I quit looking at the screen trying to syncronize hitting keys.  No lights flashed on the keyboard.
Since I don't have spare anything here, I took it down to my friends office, plugged into his old (WIN  98!!) machine and got a "bad or missing keyboard" at boot.  Off to Wally World for a terrible, cheap HP KB that got it going.
Once I got everything going, I now have a new issue (hijack my own thread).  BSOD with two different errors.
Thanks to all.  It was one of those "until 4 A.M." things for me.

Try the "Option" key immediately after the bong at restart. That should give you a choice of all bootable drives, including the CD assuming you have a boot disc in the drive.

  • I can't get my laptop to Boot from my Genuine Windows 7 pro disc... HELP !!!

Hi... I need to run ANOTHER Factory Reset on my HP dm4 6055 dx Notebook. I have gone in before Windows starts and changed the boot order and by pressing F9 before Windows starts. My disc drive make's all these noises I am pretty sure it shouldnt be making. All my latest problems started because I wanted to burn a cd. When I would try and burn a cd I kept getting this message that said the disc I was using is the incorrect write speed and is incompatable with this computer. I AM using a disc that is the right write speed for my computer. The othe thing that happens is as soon as I would click Burn (Not Responding) appears in the top left corner and the program has to be closed, All I can do is get to a sertain part in most of my programs then they have to be cloed and I start over witch has become very frustraiting. I have an Unknown Account ( S-1-15-2-1) in almost all of my programs properties. I am the only user account on my computer. I cannot open Windows System Restore I get a message that says there was a Volume Shodow Copy Error, I'm not sure what that means. I cannot open any Recovery or Restore options. If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask. I want to smash my computer it has been nothing but problems sense I got it 2 years ago...

  • How can I get Tiger to install (boot) on 2007 Intel Mini ?

    {continued from deleted thread]
Just bought brand new MB138LLA (labeled mid-2007) last week ('full warranty", (allegedly) "dual bootable")
Was purchased solely to be able to dual boot - either in Tiger or Leopard
Supposedly this model is capable of booting in 10.4.10 - IF had (received) the correct install disk.
Came with 2 install disks for 10.5.4 (2008)
    w/ 10.5.4 pre-installed (updated online to 10.5.7 as of 8/3/09)
    Disk 1 is labeled
    AHT version 3A152
    Disk version 1.1
    27691-6304-A
    Disk 2 labeled
    disk version 1.0
    2Z691-6249-A
Neither will launch/load from C-Boot, but does appear after 'normal' boot
I do not see any copy/memtion of Tiger (10.4.10) in the optional installation folder
How can I install Tiger on this 2007-model machine?
Is there a ANY version of Tiger (10.4.10 I'm told) that I can get to install on this machine
    (then update online later)
    per
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411updateintel.html
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateintel.html

Just talked with Apple Support - AGAIN
Finally got some one who understood that this particular model WAS supposed to ship with 10.4.10 (as I had determined PRIOR to the selection/purchase). Not only are they sending a CPU (serial number) specific install set for 10.4.10 but volutarially included expedited shipping at no charge (I didn't ask, suppose their way of an apology for the past week of nightmares and BOGUS information). Now that's the Apple "Support" I recall from decades past.
SO, YES, I can (and will) boot from Tiger on this CPU - and can do so either from an Internal drive partition or from GTP format Firewire RAID array.
All those claiming that such a feat is an impossibly have not researched the specifics of this model thoroughly.
Problem solved (in theory, waiting on disks)

    Hi,
I'm trying to get a dm-crypt on top of lvm to boot but without success so far. I followed http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sys … r_dm-crypt and http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … AID_or_LVM, everything works fine (I can mount the partition) but when I try to boot from it, it cannot find the crypted partition and fails.
    USELVM="yes"
HOOKS="base udev usb usbinput lvm2 encrypt filesystems"

    brw------- 1 root disk 254, 2 21. Feb 2008 sda2
/dev/mapper/root is my current encrypted / without lvm
The boot process successfully identifies the lvm /dev/mapper/root2-lvol0 and continues with hook 'encrypt' but doesn't ask me for a passphrase but goes on to hook 'filesystems' and fails then because it can't mount the correct root-partition obviously.
There's only /dev/mapper/root2-lvol0 and /dev/mapper/control when I'm in the rescue sh from initrd.
Anyone got that combination to work?

  • Can't get my eMac to boot from cd.

I have a eMac I bought from a teacher at college and he gave me the legit install discs for it. OS 10.4.11 is on the emac but I am wanting to reinstall the OS from the discs to have a clean copy on it. So I have followed instructions and put the disc 1 in the drive tray and restart the mac holding down the c key.But when it comes back on it just go straight to the log in screen. I do know he put new ram, hard drive, wireless card, and cd/dvd drive in it. Also what it does when it has the OS disk in it, the cd spins and spins and after awhile it ejects. So what I am trying to say is I put the cd in and hold down the c key but it ends up ejecting the cd. Is there anyway I can get it to run from the disc. Also if I have nothing in the tray and hold down the c key nothing still happens can someone please tell me what I need to do to fix this problem?

    Hey Brandon,
First try booting and hold the option key down. See if the eMac can even see the installer CD.
    If not,
.. eMac I bought from a teacher at college..restart the mac holding down the c key..it comes back on it just go straight to the log in screen...spins and after awhile it ejects.
Since it came from a college there could be something installed that would prevent booting from a CD. It could also be in FirmWare which would be more problematic.
My first try would be to boot the eMac into target mode and hook it to another Mac:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
From there erase the HD and try again.

  • Can't get SATA drive to boot - MSI K8NGM2-FID

Mobo is MSI K8NGM2-FID.  I've had two IDE drives w/ XP and added a SATA II (WD7500AAKS) recently as a storage drive.  Now I'd like to make the SATA the boot drive, but after cloning it from the IDE boot drive it hasn't yet got far in the start up process (cloning with WD Tools, then again with Acronis).  I can't tell whether the problem is BIOS or Windows (XP) or ?  MSI Update says the BIOS is current and I set the SATA drive as the first HD in the boot order in Advanced BIOS features.
On start up, the computer runs through the BIOS sequence onscreen and then stops somewhere between the end of that and the Windows blue screen coming up, leaving a blank screen except a flashing cursor on the left. When I disconnect the two IDE drives as a test, the same thing happens. Then, with them still disconnected, I try booting from the XP CD and it gets to the point of checking the computer's current configuration and then the screen goes blank indefinitely. I would think it would either show the XP setup menu or give a message that's something is missing.
Does this sound like BIOS or Windows or ?  Is there anything else in BIOS that needs changing?  I've been told that IDE drive jumpers have no effect on SATA drives.  Is that true?  Thanks.

Good timing.  I'd like to add partitions to my new (cloned) SATA boot drive (C:), but wanted to back up first.  A problem and a question come up.  First, when I remount the old IDE drive as a second drive D:, even wiped clean, problems ensue.  Comodo wants to look for my firewall installation on D: and Acronis won't allow me to clone back, i.e., clone from the new drive to the old.
It's not really clear what you had before or what you have now in terms of HDDs: you had two IDE drives, C: & D: and one SATA as E:??; now you have a SATA boot drive.  Do you still have the 40GB IDE drive?  Did the clone over to the SATA automatically extend the old 160GB C: partition to 750GB?  Sorry but I've no idea how Acronis works.  "Wiped clean" is kinda vague - it could mean using the HDD mfr's utility to write zeroes to the entire surface... or just creating a new Extended partition containing a formatted(?) logical volume.  If that old IDE drive has a Primary partition it could still be marked as bootable, which you can check with BootitNG... and it's not a good idea to have a Primary partition on a 2nd drive.
    Quote
Second, I assume that files are spread over the boot drive, not just grouped in the first 150GB, even if defragged.  In reducing the partition size - now 698GB - how does BootitNG know to make sure everything ends up in the first partition?  I read about this somewhere but don't see any mention in BootITNG.
Again, I don't know how you got to the situation of a 698GB partition on the SATA boot drive - it would have been better to clone to the same sized C: partition as the old 160GB drive and then use a tool like BootitNG to extend it to whatever size you want... then add new partitions.
No partition management software can guarantee a partition shrink will work - they can only shrink out unallocated space.  In that respect Windows XP Defrag is unreliable at both leaving unallocated space at the end of a partition AND at accurately reporting what is used and what is not.  In such a situation, without a better, more accurate, defragger I generally run defrag several times, with reboots in between until it "looks" like it's safe to shrink and do the shrink in steps, with checks and defrags again, in between.  Yes, it's a PITA.

  • Can't get USB installer to boot on Thinkpad S431

Just got a refurbished laptop, and can't figure out how to get the USB installer to boot correctly.  I've tried EFI only, EFI+compatibility, CSM disabled/enabled etc.  I can select the USB drive and it gets to the Arch menu, then when I select the first option to start the installer it reads the USB for a few seconds then just sits at a black screen.  Specs: Thinkpad S431, Core i5-3337U, Intel 4000.  I've tried several Arch isos, including 7/14 and 5/14.  The USB drive will boot/install in my desktop machine with no problems.
    Thanks for any help

Since it is Intel graphics, it might have been an early KMS issue.  That is, there is no possible way to get early KMS going from the installer.  In this case, you would just need to use 'nomodeset' on the kernel command line.  If you were able to use the UEFI shell, then you were probably seeing the gummiboot boot manager.  So according to this page, you need to hit 'e' to edit the kernel command line.
