Just "ctrl" and mouseclick the desired icon and select "Remove from Sidebar" from the little pop up window.. That should do the trick (in your vertical "PLACES" column)
NB: if you want to get rid of icons on the top (horizontal) bar of your finder window, then you need to go to the item with the mouse, press "cmd" ("apple" key) and drag the icon off the finder window onto your desktop and let go (if you want the "Pouf!" effect

Actually, that's not on the Home screen, it is on the multitasking or App Switcher view so only shows up when you enter that mode (so I'm not to clear as to why it is so "irritating", but whatever).
Settings app > Mail,Contacts,Calendars > scroll down to CONTACTS section] > Show in App Switcher

Can't get rid of icons

Hi, newbie here. I have an 8900 from ATT. My problems started when an icon with a down arrow with asterix and 3 showed up. I got online and found possible solutions...battery pull, clear out app messages, etc. Nothing has worked. Unfortunately, one poster said to go into the host routing table and click registe now. Well now I have a mesage icon that I can't get rid of! So now I have two problems! Any ideas? This is driving me nut!

Hmmm...it's hard to know what icon your are seeing. Can you describe more? Like where exactly on the screen it is? And it's colors? If you can get an image of it, that would probably be the best...
Also -- I'm not sure what you mean by "app messages"... the Messages app contains everything, and everything is findable via the View Folders selection. Unless -- have you separated MMS/SMS to an icon of their own? If so, those are no longer reflected in Messages...
Anyway, more description about this errant icon will help the most, I think.

I have a song on my ipod touch I can't get rid of. Even if I uncheck the artist and re-sync the file still is showing. It has a weird circle with a stop icon next to the file.

I also tried to manually manage the music files and removed them all from my ipod. But the file still remains. It only is appearing on my ipod touch, it does not show in itunes. And when I add the file that shows in itunes, it shows up twice. One is normal and the other has that stop button icon next to it. Please help.

They would only be where you put them. What program did you use to import them? Pics/vids taken with ipod are not part of the sync process at all. You should be importing them just as you would with any digital camera.
If you did not import them, then they are not on your computer.

How can i get rid of this YJ News popup that keeps apearing on any website i visit? I don't even know what YJ News is and it is extremely annoying.

Updating IPhoto - I get a message saying to "sign in to the account you used to purchase it." I have signed in using both of my Apple ID's but get the same error message. Any suggestions?

My App Store says I have updates pending. I only have two Apple ID's but cannot update iPhoto when I sign in with either of them. I tried buying a new copy, but it won't let me do that either, only giving me the update option. Any ideas?

I have iphone 4 and put on IOS 5 and ICloud and now my battery is doing what everyone else's is doing. I noticed that the music icon seems to be in the background and I can't get rid of it. Is this effecting the battery?

My battery is draining too quickly since I installed icloud. I successfully moved everything from mobile me to icloud. I notice that the music icon and playing the music is still in the background after I close all of the other apps that I have opened in the past. Can you help me identify how to rectify this problem?

That is a WiFi Hotspot notification. is there a WiFi Hotspot near you? If you're WiFi is ON and there is one near you, it will automatically detect it and ask your credentials.

Ver16.0.2..How can I get rid of an annoying pop up in the lower left of the screen that is difficult to remove. I t began with an update last week.

The pop up appears with every new tab. It has an extremely small delete "X" icon if you can find it...The pop up interferes visually with every tab and must be carefully manually deleted each time. It is always located in the lower left bottom of the screen. It is a window about 3 inches square. It began last week with an automatic download. How can I get rid of a frozen updates window? I tried uninstalling/reinstalling latest software/rebooting. Window shows up whenever I try to open Firefox and will not close.

When I try to open Firefox I get an updates window for Cool Iris and Cool Previews. Options for 'skip', 'install,' 'more info,' 'x' to close window, nothing responds. I have to use the Mac 'Force Quit' command to close Firefox and get it off my screen. Can't minimize it either.

That problem has nothing to do with format settings. It is a burn-in, which is set in the view settings (timeline panel), and also you can deactivate in the render settings.
