I can't get SMB to work in 10.9.4

Hello,
I have 4 systems running 10.9.4 and they all connect to a file server also running 10.9.4 via AFP. It works but it's wicked slow a listing file directories. I read that apple is doing away with afp and switching to SMB. I can't seem to get SMB to work.
I've opened the ports on our firewall TCP/UDP 137, 138, 139 & 445. But I still get an error when I try to connect via SMB that read: "There was a problem connecting to the server . . ."
AFP work, VNC works....just not SMB.
I have checked under file sharing preferences and "Share files and folders using SMB" is checked and I've even set up the "Windows File Sharing: " account thing in the bottom of the options.
When I ping for ports, 445 shows in the list but 137, 138 and 139 do not....I think this may be the issue but I have no idea why they wouldn't show up as they are indeed open according to my router's firewall.
I want to connect via SMB to see if it is any faster at listing file directories. After upgrading to Mavericks the share listings have gotten terrible. We regret making the update.
Thanks,
Mark
