I can't hear, they can hear, speakers on, ports open.

I've got a little puzzle... Here's the setup:
MacBook, Mac OS 10.4.6, internal iSight, i.8 Ghz Intel Core Duo, 1.25 GB RAM, Using my own 1.5 MBPS wireless network router with Airport Express. Internal Mic on, Check. Speakers on full blast, Check. Quictime streaming, sound prefs, iChat prefs, check.
iMac G5, Mac OS 10.4.6, external iSight, 1.8 Ghz G5, 1.25 GB RAM, Using Neighbor's 1.5 MBPS wireless network (with full permission, of course.) Internal Mic on, Check. Harmon/Kardon Soundsticks on full---well maybe half blast... Check. Quictime streaming, sound prefs, iChat prefs, check.
Opened all ports on my own Actiontec router described from Apples KB in many different configurations. From opening as many ports as possible in different ways using UDP and TCP and both going with AND against Apple's suggestion.
I was able to get through the "Failed to respond" issue (Stupid routers) and I was able to initiate a 4 way conversation (Finally!) Between five different parties, swapping between them, of course. Everyone was using the same iChat, best configuration on their ends. (New Macbooks and G5's, all using iChat 3.1.4 and all settings on as best to their knowledge.)
Myself: I initiated the conference. I could see all three parties.
Party 1: I can see and hear them, they can see and hear me. They are on the same network as I am.
Party 2: I can see them, but I can't hear them. They can't see the conversation, but they can hear the conversation.
Party 3: iMac G5 on neighbor's network, I can see it, and can hear it. It can see the conversation, but can't hear the conversation
Party 4: (switched with Party 2) I can see them, but I can't hear them. They can hear and see the conversation. Both try initiating conversation, 1 on 1 too, same results.
Party 5: 1 on 1 conversation. I can see, and hear them, they can see and hear me. Both try initiating conversation. Same results.
It's mostly an audio problem of me being unable to hear most other parties, even though i have my MacBook speakers up as far as it will go. Why will some parties be able to allow their audio to pass through to me, while others would not? It seems it's coming from my end.
What do I do, how do i fix this, are there any suggestions? Am I doing something wrong that I shouldn't be doing?
This is all my router's fault.

If this is a one computer LAN then Port Forwarding can be used.
This needs just these ports open:
AIM TCP 5190
AIM UDP 5060, 5190, 5678, 16384-16403
Jabber TCP 5220, 5222, 5223
Bonjour TCP 5298
Bonjour UDP 5297, 5298, 5353
This works even ikf you don't specify the "scoop and point" method the Apple Doc lists for more commercial devices.
This will not work for LANs with more than one Mac and as AIM on a PC also uses port 5190 for both logging on and file sending you need to use a method that allows mulitple computers such as Port Triggering or UPnP.
Port Triggering for the AIM side of iChat needs to look like this.
Trigger port 5190 on TCP to Trigger 5190 on Both UDP and TCP
Trigger port 5678 On UDP to trigger 5060, 5678, 16384-16403 on UDP
On some devices you can not specify the trigger in the list of ports as in the second line.
You may have to split into two lines.
Trigger 5678 on UDP to trigger 5060 on UDP
Trigger 5060 on UDP to trigger 16384-16403 on UDP
The Bonjour ports and the Jabber ports ned to be entered as single port entries on the relevant TCP (Jabber and Bonjour's 5298) and UDP protocols.
The AIM application for a PC will need
Trigger Port 5190 on TCP to Trigger ports 1024-5000 on TCP/UDP

  • How can I set up a WD My Cloud with my Airport Extreme - I can't get it to open ports 80 and 443?

    For remote internet access to the WD My Cloud Mirror, I have been advised that ports 80 and 443 must be open in order to reach the WDMyCloudMirror.  My Motorola Gateway (Surfboard SB6141) is connected directly to my Airport Extreme (WAN port) which is in turn connected to the WDMyCloudMirror (all by ethernet cables).  I do not have FULL instructions on how to properly manually configure the Airport Extreme to open the ports.  I have tried an earlier posting which provides many of the steps, but not all of the required information is included (how to determinge the IP address to be assigned, etc.).  I did the best I could with the information given, but the test using "YouGetSignal" showed the ports as still closed and attemps to reach the WDMyCloudMirror by the internet failed as well (of course).  The WDMyCloudMirror has enough Apple "stuff" included in it (software, I suspect) that an Apple legal acceptance is required for its set-up, yet Western Digital Tecnical Support is unable (or unwilling?) to help with this aspect of its configuration required to work within the Airport Extreme environment.  I have returned the WD My Cloud Mirror to Amazon as "not able to work", but I have not given up the hope that I can eventually get the ports open so that I can get this cloud device, or one similar, to permit remote internet access.

    Port Forwarding.....or Port Mapping....as Apple calls it is a difficult and complex configuration method for most users. Because there are so many variables involved in this type of setup, it is not possible to provide a step by step guide that will work for everyone with all devices.
    It is possible that a setup guide exists for the the WD drive and AirPort Extreme, but you will have to go looking for it on the Internet. Even if you find one, it may not be tailored to your specific situation or needs.
    Sometimes, you can do everything right....at least according to someone's article or "how to" guide, and things still will not work correctly.
    In situations like this, when you really don't know what to do, you need to enlist the aid of an IT pro, who will know what to do based on your particular products and unique circumstances. Sometimes....they won't be able to get things working either due to particular circumstances.
    But, before you do this, I would strongly recommend that you use a Static IP address for your Internet connection with your ISP. If you do not have this now, contact them to ask them if they offer this type of connection. Expect to pay more for this type of service, of course.

    I have not tried in Presenter 10 but in version 9 below worked.
    if you hook up different web cam models (meaning not the same model x 2 or x 3 but totally different models) you can use multiple cameras and "switch" between them by using the pause function on the keyboard while recording videos. An example. Use 2-3 web cams that are all HD cams but different models (Logitech 920 HD is a good choice for this plus one or two other Logitech HD models). You can then record with say your main camera pointed at you, pause the recording, choose a camera that is over your shoulder for a "see what I am seeing on my monitor" as an example and then switch again to a third camera for a profile view of yourself.

    I can't get imovie to open after trying to shift the image from my macbook pro to the tv screen like I have done many times before.  If I double click on the imovie icon, imovie doesn't open, but the strip across the top shows iMovie, file, edit , clip, view, text share window help tabs across the top.  The iMovie window will appear if I click on the iMovie icon on the dock for a few seconds, or if I do control F3 at the same time, but when I click on the window it disappears.  When I hover the mouse over the iMovie window that appears the window has a blue border around it.  when I move the mouse outside the iMovie window the blue border goes away.  If I sweep 4 fingers from the top of the screen down, the screen dims a little but the iMovie window doesn't appear. If I click play under the view tab I can hear audio, but still no iMovie window.  It's as if the window is being blocked by the desk top somehow.

    I purchased five movies for download and having nothing but problems getting them downloaded. I keep receiving error messages and the download stops and I have to restart it, just to get another minute worth of download with each restart. Now Apple has my money and I have nothing.

    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
    2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
    A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
    If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
    If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
    If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • As the creator of an interactive PDF form, can I block users from opening it in Preview or web?

    I have created a number of interactive PDF application forms which are downloaded from our website and completed by individuals and organisations who wish to apply for funding.
    Increasingly we are being contacted by people who are having trouble completing, saving and printing the forms. In almost every case it turns out that they have opened/filled in the form in Preview or in their web browser and the form has been corrupted. As Macs become more and more popular this is going to become a bigger issue, to the point where we may not be able to use interactive PDFs anymore. 
    We do have a warning at the top of the first page of each form telling people that they need to complete their form using Adobe Reader or Acrobat, with a hyper-link to the web page to download Adobe Reader for free. But this obviously isn't sufficient given the number of people who are still trying to access and complete the forms in Preview.
    What I want to know is if there is any way, as the creator of the form, that I can stop it from being opened in Preview in the first place? Or failing that, if it is possible to create a warning that pops up if the form in opened in Preview or a web browser?
    If this can't be done I will need to include a detailed technical help page in the form. Rather than starting from scratch, if anyone has already pulled this information together and would be happy to share it would be greatly appreciated.

    You can't prevent it from opening, but you can active the form only if it's being used in a JavaScript-capable viewer. You could show a message (e.g., button, layer) by default, and get rid of it if a script that runs when the form is opened is executed. The script could also enable the fields if everything checks out.

  • How can I get TB to open again and accept the emails Carbonite restored recently?

    A large number of emails were deleted from my Inbox for no reason I could discern. I downloaded all the missing folders and files from Carbonite, but I can't get TB to open now. I get this message when I try: "Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Thunderbird process, or restart your system." Since I can't get TB to run, I have no way to close it. Restarting makes no difference. The nice folks at Carbonite confirmed that they had downloaded my emails onto my computer, but said that the Thunderbird problem was not their area of concern. And, if my problem was not solved in 30 days (this occurred about a week ago), they would automatically delete my back-up of these emails from their server.

    What you seem to be describing is a "fillable" PDF that people can type on and fill in Adobe Reader - but not necessarily save, be sure you understand this limitation!!

    I would like to retieve a link via database that would open a folder of drawings, word documents, pdf files, excel files etc., where the user can select which file they want. Selected files would open in which ever format they were with programs that are already installed on the users computer. For example, the link would open a folder where several solid works files were, and a couple of Word documents. The user would select one of the Solid Works files, and it would open up in the Solid Works installation on the users computer. Is this possible, or must a link point directly to a file?

    I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "link". Are you referring to a URL that uses a "file://" protocol?
    The standard File Dialog VI has a "start path" input that you can set so the file dialog opens to that folder.

  • Can't override AI10 when opening files from Bridge or Explorer.

    I have Illustrator 10 installed (on windows 7) because I need to work with .cgm files. The problem is that I can't double click to open .ai files in my newer Illustrator CC, they always try to open in AI10. Yes, I've changed the file type association in the windows control panel. It is set to Illustrator CC, but it still opens in AI10. I have to go to AICC every time and use the File > Open menu. I am always forgetting and double clicking files, then I have to wait for AI10 to open, then close it down. Other than uninstalling AI10, I can't figure out how to fix this.

    Okay, I think I've finally figured this out. I had to reset the file associations inside the Bridge Preferences. All it was offering me was Illustrator as an option. I had to drill down into the programs to the Illustrator CC.exe file. Why wouldn't that show up as a option in the first place? Anyway it seems to be working now.

    These tools you are talking about, did you configure the tnsnames for them?
    If you plan to change the default listening port, you need to modify the listener.ora file under $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin
    After 9i, Oracle has service registration
    A feature by which the PMON process automatically registers information with a listener. Because this information is registered with the listener, the listener.ora file does not need to be configured with this static information.
    You can try to run one listener, see if both instances can register themselves in even they are different versions.

    The message means just what it says. Remove the damaged copy and try downloading it again.
    Edit: Looking at FontLab's page, there's two issues going on.
    1) It's a PowerPC app and will not run on any version of OS X newer than Snow Leopard, 10.6.x.
    2) The "workaround" they offer is to purchase the Windows version and then run it in the the open source Wine, Windows emulator.
