I can't import my bookmarks from Safari to Firefox

Hi, I'm using MacBook Pro for a month. I have hundreds of bookmarks on Safari. I want to import that bookmarks to Firefox 4.
Sorry for my bad english

Press either Alt or F10, that will temporarily display the traditional menus, you can then use "File > Import" to import from the HTML file.

  • Can I copy my bookmarks from Safari to Firefox if they are on the same computer?

I would like to use Firefox and I want to '''copy''' the bookmarks I have in Safari. I have a Mac with OS10.6 and both Safari and Firefox are on the same computer. I want to know if Firefox is more friendly since I do a lot of writing.

You should update to Firefox 6.0.1 through Help > About > Check for updates
before testing rather than be disappointed with a Firefox update after testing.
All browsers can use the Netscape bookmarks formatted HTML file to copy bookmarks. But according to documentation you can import directly from Safari. Hopefully that applies to your Mac, because it is not shown as an option for me on Windows 7.
'''Import bookmarks''' - MozillaZine Knowledge Base

"'''Firefox imports Safari settings automatically'''. Just go to File > Import... and select Safari. In the next window, check the boxes of what you want to import. For example, your Safari Bookmarks will appear in Firefox's Bookmarks menu as "From Safari." Whatever other bookmarks you had on your Safari Bookmarks Bar will automatically appear on your Firefox Bookmarks Bar, too. "
    If that does not work:
:'''Exporting Bookmarks from Safari:''' (from Safari Help)
    # Choose File > Export Bookmarks.
    # Specify a location for the exported file. The file's name will be "Safari bookmarks.html." Most browsers are able to import this type of file.

Firefox uses the same keyboard shortcut to display menus as used on Safari (on a PC it is the "Alt" key).
Firefox is highly customizable, so you can change the appearance, and a lot of what would be done in other browsers must be done using extensions in Firefox, but the extensions for the "same" feature probably give you a lot more functionality and control. In the following making Firefox look more like 3.6 would be of interest if you are used to other older browsers -- Safari grew up independently so other browsers are more alike.
You can make '''Firefox 6.0.1''' look like Firefox 3.6.*, see numbered '''items 1-10''' in the following topic [http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/firefox/firefox-problems.htm#fx4interface Fix Firefox 4.0 toolbar user interface, problems (Make Firefox 4.0 thru 8.0, look like 3.6)]. There is a lot more beyond those first 10 steps listed, if you want to make Firefox more functional. (later on)

How do I import my bookmarks from Safari to Firefox?

    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Import_bookmarks#From_Safari
    Exporting bookmarks from Safari
Go to File->Export Bookmarks. Safari saves your bookmarks in an HTML file. Save the HTML file to the Desktop or any other location of your choice.
    Importing bookmarks to Firefox
Go to Bookmarks->Show all bookmarks. This will open up the Bookmarks Library.
    Click Import and Backup...
Select Import Bookmarks from HTML.. from drop down menu.
Locate your HTML file exported from Safari.
You can use Safari Bookmark Exporter to export bookmarks to a simple HTML file, if exporting to an HTML file is not supported by Safari.

  • I have imported bookmarks from Safari to Firefox but the bookmarks bar does not change in Firefox and match that of Safari. That's the part I need most. Any ideas why? Also, I don't see where to choose for Firefox to be my default browser.

I use a Imac with OS 10.6.7. I've just uploaded Firefox 4. I had Firefox 3 already but do not use it often. I've been using Safari. I imported bookmarks from Safari to Firefox, but the bookmarks bar in Firefox did not change to match that of Safari, and that's where the important bookmarks are. Any ideas?
Also, I can't find where to choose Firefox as my default browser.

Copy the files from the old Profile into the new Profile, replacing the existing files that are in the new Profile. That will make your new installation just like the old one.
Or if you just want your bookmarks, copy only the '''places.sqlite''' file from the old Profile into the new Profile.

How do I import bookmarks from Safari to Firefox?

Import and Backup is the third (last) button on the toolbar in the Bookmarks Manager (Library) that looks like a star.<br />
Other platforms show the text label, but on Mac you only see toolbar icons.

  • Since the import feature is missing from the Firefox 9 File menu, how do I import my bookmarks from Safari on an iMac using Lion?

I don't know what to add to the question, which is quite specific. I downloaded Firefox 9, but cannot find the Import section on the File Menu, as in previous versions, and as in the help section in Firefox Help.

i had the same problem you describe. the simplest way i found to import my bookmarks from safari is to: with firefox open click on "bookmarks" then " show all bookmarks". you will get a folder titled "library". in the menu bar you will see a 5 pointed star. click on it to open the drop down box. one of the options is to "import data from another browser". then follow the instructions from there. this worked for me. hope this helps.

  • I can't import my bookmarks on Chrome to Firefox even after I followed the Firefox guide on how to do this.

I can't import my bookmarks from Google Chrome to Firefox (version 3.6.13) even though I followed the guide on how to do this.

Just figured out by accident how to change the .html file back to a .json file. Wherever the file is on your computer, open a CMD or DOS window up. If the file name is something like "bookmarks-2011-07-15.json.html" you can rename it using CMD, but it wont work in windows. Use these commands without the quotation marks.
    "rename *.json.html *.json"
Their is one space between the l and *, "rename *.json.html(space)*.json"
That should effectively get rid of the .html at the end of the file. You should also see the file has the same icon it once had before having .html put on the end of it and it taking the icon of whatever web browser you are using. In Windows, not CMD, you might have to right click on the file and rename it again to get rid of the .json if it is showing, doing so wont affect the file anyway negatively. After it's renamed you can close the CMD window.
Now you should be able to import your bookmarks using the Firefox's "Imports and Backup > Restore > Choose File" menu and would you look at that, theirs your bookmarks.
Hope this helps even though it's now two plus months since first post.

  • I'm having trouble transfering bookmarks from Safari to Firefox. File, "Import" button is grayed out. I've gone through your trouble shooting, the database for imports is no longer current.

I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I have the latest version of Firefox 5.0. I'm over Apple's Safari, and I'd like to transfer my bookmarks into Firefox. I've gone through your help and support section and found an article that could help me. However, when I click File, the "import" button is grayed out. Which prevents me from importing bookmarks into your browser. So I drug the Firefox icon into the recycle bin, and hit empty trash, then re-downloaded the firefox software from your site, and it seemed to remember my old bookmarks from a year ago. The file, "import" button was still grayed out, so I couldn't update my entire new list of bookmarks onto your web browser.

I installed firefox on my new computer (Win XP). So how can I move all my firefox bookmarks from my old computer to the new one and use them?

  • Using "wizard" on a Mac OS X with Snow Leopard, importing bookmarks from Safari to Firefox should be seamless. Yet, when I try to select "Import..." under the File menu, the item is dimmed (unavailable) and unresponsive. Am I missing something obvious?

No more details. As indicated, the import function seems to be disabled.

I'm having difficulty visualizing what is wrong but try some basic steps first:
Launch Safari while holding a Shift key - this will start Safari with just your Home page
If you can see Reset Safari from the Safari menu, try that.
In addition to downloading and installing Safari again, try reapplying just the Snow Leopard Combo Update: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399 There is no need to uninstall Safari first.
Lastly try deleting Safari's Preferences file: ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
