I can't import my iphoto 2 library

I'm trying to import my iphoto library from an old Powerbook with iphoto 2 to a new Macbook with iphoto 6 using an ethernet cable (worked fine for itunes). When I do this, the albums don't show up in iphoto 6 and the titles of the images have gone. Any ideas? Many thanks.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. In addition to Terence's post you might look at this post for some suggestions on preparing the library for conversion to V6 with iPhoto 6.
Tip for Updating from iPhoto 5 to iPhoto 6
The post is valid for iPhoto 2 as well.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How can i import my iPhoto 5 library backup

    Hi all,
i'm doing a biggest upgrade since i'm switching from an old G4 with iPhoto 5 to a newer iMac with iPhoto 11 (the last one).
There is a way to import in the new system my iphoto 5 album and books (around 7GB)?
    Many thanks in advance

    Yes.
Note that the Library will be upgraded to for the new version.
Since iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Can I import the Iphoto library from iOS to the Mac?

The HDD where I kept my iPhoto library is deth. The library is sync with the Ipad. Can I import the Iphoto library from iOS to the Mac? I want to keep the organization (albums, events). Is it possible?

No, and the images on your iPad are lower quality than the ones in iPhoto on your Mac. Restore from your back up is the  best solution.
You can get images from your iPad with an 3rd party app like iExplorer, but there are others. Search on MacUpdate

  • Aperture 3 import of iPhoto 5 library

Is it possible to import an iPhoto 5 library into Aperture 3?
When I do a file > import > iPhoto library it correctly brings up the file browser pointing to the location of my iPhoto 5 library. However the import button is disabled - so the only option is 'cancel'.
So I'm guessing that maybe it's not possible, however I can't find any definitive information as to what versions of iPhoto are supported. Any hints?
Further, if it turns out that Aperture 3 does not support import from iPhoto 5, any suggestions on how I might get around it?
    Thanks.

Yeah that's fairly old. It might be you need to upgrade the iPhoto library to a more recent version (I'm guessing… 08 or 09… before import). I'm sure a KBase article would have specifics but I'm leaving that as an exercise for the reader.

  • Can't import all files in library

Hi, I've just installed iTunes 5.0.1.4 and can´t import my whole music library into the program. When I go to Files-import it looks up .txt files and when I try to add folders it does no add them all.
    Thank you.

I've had the same problem (posted a message in this discussion board earlier), only I've used the "file copy" and "folder copy" features. Several of my songs (unprotected mp3 files) won't copy, even if I specifically select that song. Anybody have any idea what's going on/how to fix it? Also, any idea why iTunes will create duplicate files out of nowhere?

  • Can't import an iPhoto library into Aperture

I'm using Aperture 1.5.2 and iPhoto 6.0.6 and cannot get Aperture to import my iPhoto library. I am following the procedure in the Aperture User Manual (p. 112) but it doesn't work. I don't get a beach-ball cursor or anything... no images, no disk activity, etc. This is regardless of the “Store Files:” or “Version Names:” or other settings in the dialog box.
I saw the Apple Support doc entitled “Aperture can't import iPhoto Library from iPhoto 6.0.1 or 6.0.2” which promises a fix in Aperture 1.1. Is this still the same problem? Or is it a different problem?
I know I can drag the photos from iPhoto into Aperture, but keywords are not preserved. Any suggestions?
    PowerBook Al 15   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I recently started using Aperture 1.5.2 and imported my iPhoto Library from iPhoto 6.0.6, so it's not an impossible task. I also had a lot of trouble with it. I can say it was a pain and there were several false starts and once it froze half-way through importing them. I did File -> Import... -> iPhoto Library and I left the files in their current location... but you said this was regardless of settings. I swear the thing just sat their for a good 20 minutes after I told it to import, although I can't recall if there was a spinning cursor or not. I'd get occasional errors about being unable to connect to server at the beginning (after it sat there for 20 minutes) and middle of the process. I just kept hitting Okay and if I had all other applications closed, Aperature finally did it. So... I guess that all amounts to: "I had problems, too, but after several tries it worked so maybe just keep trying and let it sit for awhile if no one else has a more helpful suggestion." Good luck!

  • Can I import my iPhoto Library from iPhoto 7.1.5 to iPhoto 9.5.1?

I'm trying to migrate from my old ('08) iMac to my newer MBP, but I cannot seem to successfully import my iPhoto library. The original version is 7.1.5 and the one on my MBP is 9.5.1. I have tried various techniques, mainly variations on copying the iPhoto library to USB drive and then moving to the Pictures folder on the MBP, but iPhoto refuses to import/recognise the library. It does not appear to be corrupt. Is it because the original library is incompatible with iPhoto 9.5.1, or is there some other way I could try?

but I cannot seem to successfully import my iPhoto library.
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
What you need to do is open the Library - see Neil's link for the upgrade - and update it.

  • How can I import multiple iphoto libraries into Photos beta

I have successfully imported a single iPhoto Library into the Photos Beta app.  However I have several other iPhoto libraries that I would like to import into the Photos library.  Think of is as merging everything into one now that there's iCloud backup.
I started with iPhoto back in 2005 and have created a separate library every three years ever since.  Each one is quite large, ~40 gigs.
What is the best means to import additional libraries into my new Photos library.  Unfortunately the File import option on Photos does not allow for a selection of iPhoto Library file type.
    Thanks,
    Brian

Merge all iPhoto Libraries into one before migrating them to the new Photos.app.
You cannot add additional libraries to a Photos library, only additional photos.  Or have several Photos libraries, but only one of them can sync with iCloud.
To merge your iPhoto Libraries into one, use either Aperture, if you have it  (see:  Aperture 3.3: How to use Aperture to merge iPhoto libraries), or the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager:  Download it here:  iPhoto Library Manager

  • Can't Import from iphoto

Today I was attempting to import from iphoto and a message window popped up stating,
"Invalid I photo Library" Importing library versions earlier than iphoto 6.0.6 are not supported. Please upgrade your iphoto library.
I believe I have the latest version, Iphoto 09 version 8.1.1. It was all working fine yesterday. Is it time to call Apple care?
    27" imac SL 10.6.2
Any help or ideas will be greatly appreciated.
    Jeff

Your problem with iPhoto is seems like an issue with some library corruption. +In iPhoto+ Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    As to the licencing issue:
Aperture can be installed on two machines but can only be used on one at a time. You asked the salesman ""Can I run the already purchased app on the new mac?" and you can, but not legally. You don't have to purchase another licence, you can simply remove Aperture from one of the other machines.

  • Can Aperture 3 and Iphoto sinc library ?

    Hi .
I´m not photo professional but I want more reosurce with my photos. I bought Aperture 3 and I feel I have most I need from Iphoto. I don´t want have too many space with two photo libraries and have a risk to loose something. It´s possible to sinc my aperture library with Iphoto ? For a hobbist you think Iphoto is enough ?
    Thanks,
    Daniel Rodrigues
    Brazil

No, you cannot sync your iPhoto Library and your Aperture Library.
You will have to make up your mind which of the two you will want to use in future.
If you really feel the need for the advanced editing and organizational tools Aperture has to offer, you can have an easy transit from iPhoto to Aperture by importing your iPhoto Library as it is into Aperture. This will keep all your meta tags, events (now called projects), albums, slideshows, etc.
Aperture has a steep learning curve, but it is possible to use initially no more than than you did use in iPhoto and so gradually get to know the program.
The way back from Aperture to iPhoto is not so easy, for you cannot import your Aperture lIbrary into iPhoto. It is a one-way road. So try it thoroughly before you commit yourself.

  • How can i share my iphoto 11 library with another user on the same mac?

    hi
i recently added a new user account for my wife on my macbook pro. now we want to share the existing iphoto 11 library, which is on my account, with the new user account. i'm using os x lion.
    many thanks!
    davide from sitzerland

For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • How can I import into iPhoto, from my iPad, albums created on the iPad using Photos App ?

I take about 300 photos a day using my iPad, as i'm filming to help keep continuity.
I then create albums under the scene number from some of the photos taken. Eventually i will build up all of the scene numbers in the script.
I want to import into iPhoto all of these albums.
    How can this be done?
For some reason, when i plug my iPad into the laptop, it won't import screen grabs or all of the photos.
So the fact i have tried to be super organised, the apple software is now letting me down !
Can albums created in the iPad now be imported into iPhoto as albums to keep my organisation ?
    Thanks.

That is not a feature of iPhoto - suggest to Apple - iPhoto Menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback.
With the new Photo app later this year the integration between IOS and the Mac will be much greater

  • What is the maximum size of a jpg that can be imported into iPhoto?

what is the maximum size of a jpg that can be imported into iPhoto

I've imported and worked on Photoshop and tiff files up at 220 MB (8400 x 6600 pixels) in size.  It does take some time to do any edits, up to 7 seconds for some.   220 MB is a big file but iPhoto handles it OK.
I do have a top of the line iMac with SSD drive so it's pretty fast.  Other Macs may be slower depending on their configuration.
