I can't import supported movie files

I tried importing a mpeg4 video into iMovie but it appears greyed out. I converted the file to quicktime and this also shows greyed out. both are supported formats. what do i do?

I had a similar problem. I found out there are QuickTime movies that are just incompatible: format, compression scheme or something. Experimenting, I converted my QuickTime movie to a QuickTime movie. If you have QuickTimePro, try this. Open the clip in QuickTime. From the FILE menu, click Export. From the resulting window, in the Export field, select Movie to QuickTime Movie. Then click the Options button. On the resulting window you can see the various options provided. Choose Settings. On the resulting window, on the Compression Type field, choose H.264 or Apple Intermediate Codec for high quality, but others will work, too. You can experiment with Size, but the larger the size, the longer it will take to convert (think pixel by pixel). It took me more than 8 hours to convert a 37 minute clip to Apple Intermediate Codec and longer with H.264 at 854x480. You can experiment with others as well, and iMovie 8 or 9 should have no issues importing most of these. If you do not have QuickTimePro, consider buying it. It’s available as a download from Apple and you’ll probably use it more than you might think.
Good luck.

  • I can't import any movies/files from my desktop to make an iMovie

I can't import any movies/files from my desktop to make an iMovie. It worked a few days ago and now I can't do anything. Also, is there a way to get rid of all the movie files that I don't need anymore? Thanks!

What type of audio files? What bitdepth and samplefrequency?

You might need to tell us a bit more about your problem.  Do you mean you can't import a video file into Premiere, or your computer is having trouble playing Quicktime files?

  • Can't import new movie-files to iMovie.

I have used IMovie to redirect some movie materials. It worked just fine.
No I have started a new project. For this new project I try to import new movie material (mpeg). IMovie starts optimizing the material (even though I deselected this option). However: nothing happens. How big or small the file is, I try to import: no progress can be seen. (The estimated time is also blanc.)
After waiting for 15 minutes, nothing happened. What is going wrong, and more important: how can I fix this?

The best way to do this is to take a SD card out of your camera and insert it into a card reader. Then you can import directly from the camera. Do this for all future movies you shoot. There is no need for a third party converter.  You can also connect your camera via USB and import directly from the camera. In this case, you need to hook up your camera to AC power, not batteries only.
If the only copies you have of your mts files have been removed from the camera and are out of context (you did not preserve all the folders from the camera), then your best bet is to use a converter. The two that I hear most often are ClipWrap and Voltaic HD.

  • Can't import large mov file to FCP

I am new to Macbook pro and new to Final Cut Pro X. Rather than explaining how and why I would just like to tell you what, and ask you how?
My MOV file is 469GB and is on an external HD
My Macbook Pro has an SSD with 434GB free space.
Final Cut Pro X cannot import because there isn't enough room.
Any suggestions? It is a church service so there isn't a way to get it again.
    Thanks

Import the file and leave unchecked copy to event.

  • Can't import mp4/mov files into iMovie

I tried to create a new project by importing a .mp4 file from my account on Youtube. It copied the file to the event but didn't create a thumbnail. I did some research and I tried:
-Quitting imovie, changing the name of the event folder, then restarting imovie.
-Importing the .mp4 to a different event folder. Quitting/restarting.
At this point, the thumbnail for the newly imported movie appeared but the other videos that were previously (and successfully) thumbnailed in that event disappeared. I quit/restarted iMovie and all the thumbnails in that event were missing.
Here's what I've tried since then:
-Converting the .mp4 in Handbrake to .mp4 and then importing again. No luck.
-TRYING to convert the .mp4 to .mov in mpeg streamclip. I get an "Audio Decoding Error" when I attempt.
-Converting the .mp4 to .mov while disabling the sound in mpeg streamclip. IT WORKS and iMovie is able to import AND thumbnail.
So it'd appear that there's something wrong with the audio in the .mp4 file. Tried other .mp4 files and none of them were able to be converted or imported. Tried extracting the audio from the .mp4 file via MPEG streamclip and there's the same "Audio Decoding Error." The audio on the .mp4 file is AAC.
OK... It'd appear that I'd need to just import the .mov (no sound) along with the audio from the clip (I've used AudioHijack for that) to edit both in iMovie. The problem is that when I try to export it in iMovie I receive error codes.
This just all seems way, way more complicated that it needs to be. Does anyone have any suggestions on something I haven't tried yet or perhaps some video editing software (non FCE) worth looking into?
    Thanks

I was currently having the same issue trying to import into imovie. I have EyeTV Hybrid and when exporting a movie it asks you to select format in which to export it in. I selected m-peg4 and when I tried to import into imovie it was grayed in the finder, so what I did was return to the export feature in EyeTV and exported again under a different format - for imovie. It's exporting as we speak and I feel this will allow me to import properly now. Hope this helps.

  • I can't import any movie files in FCPX (even files that previously imported)

I am currently in this interesting position of not being able to import any videos into FCPX. Not just one, or a few odd ones, but none whatsoever.
I have previously imported some videos into FCPX, so it seems like the software is... deteriorating.
I created a quick video showing my attempt to import a video (ProRes4444) created in Motion5.
    http://youtu.be/LLD_4YVeipQ
I had imported the exact same video into FCPX previously (another Event, another time).
It doesn't matter if I use the import dialog (or what settings I choose on that dialog) - I get the same result.
As you can imagine, as a result of this, I can't do anything on FCPX at the moment...
If only FCPX came on CD, I could at least use it as a coffee coaster - even that would be far more use than I'm currently getting out of it ;-)
I guess I can try a reinstall, but I wanted to plea for help & share with others who might get this & wonder if they're the only ones.

    Yes, that's it. thank you.
I changed Import settings to "Create Proxy Media" at some stage & the setting in Playback "Use Proxy Media" must stay set to this. Basically, if you get Playback & Import settings out of sync, you'll get this calamity.
It would be nice to get a message about it - it's quite a "gotcha".
My evil side can now sabotage anyone's FCPX installation just by going to their house & setting Playback to "Use Proxy Media" - should have them scratching their head for hours ;-)
I imagine that you must have been burnt a little by this - and that's why you know the answer so quick ;-)

  • Can't import video (.mov) from Coolpix P100 camera to iPhoto

I can't import any .mov files from my Coolpix p100 camera to iPhoto (iPhoto '08, version 7.1.5) Mac OS X 10.4.11. I can import pictures no problem when I use a firewire connection from the camera to my iBook G4. This is the message I get:
    Unreadable files.
The following file could not be imported. (The import failed)
    DSCN0573.MOV
For example, I can see the .mov file under "Information" before I try to import. It says it is a QuickTime movie, 274 MB. I can watch it on my camera.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Is there a chance the .mov file could be imported via some
third party (free ware) video software into the Mac, such as
VLC or a shareware video utility; perhaps Snapz ProX?
Another idea may be to see if the iMovie software would do it.
This topic has come up several years ago, and depending on
the model or brand of camera in some cases, different paths
were taken to get the product and files to work.
In a few cases, some proprietary software provided limited
support for a camera's feature set; some didn't work for Mac.
When the camera creates a hybrid image file, and their own
software was not available in a Mac format, another may be
available to provide the missing link.
There may be some third-party plug-ins that may allow the
QuickTime you have, to open and view the .mov files; not
sure what exact ones would qualify, however, to do it.
With my cameras, which can create .mov files, I have not
experimented with them; as both are essentially still image
cameras and know the results wouldn't suit my projects.
Hopefully one of the video player software products can help.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Just upgraded to Lion and can no longer import any .mov files ("file not supported") to 3.1.3.  Also can no longer view any .mov or .mp4 files already in library.

Have been using Aperture 3.1.3 with no problems.  Importing from a Nikon D80 (RAW & JPEG), Casio (.MOV) and Flip (.mp4).  Could import and view all videos without issue prior to Lion upgrade.  After Lion installation, can no longer import .mov files (get "file not supported" error) or even view any .mov or .mp4 files currently in library (even though thumbnail is present).  Can watch the .mov files directly on my camera using Quicktime in Finder but can't even drag & drop that file into Aperture.  Anybody else having similar problems?

Still no resolution and Geniuses at store could not assist.  Unfortunately, it looks like not all the applications were ready to support the Lion operating system.  We could not import any .mov files, could no longer view any .mov files already in my Aperture library and could not email any .mov files.  Totally frustrated.  Use Aperture almost daily and can't lose the video functionality.  Was also running dog-slow.  Constantly looking at the spinning wheel.  Geniuses suggested that I wipe out hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard.  Had full backup on external drive with Time Machine.
Not an easy process though...had to reinstall several times (at 5 hours each time) because I continued to have issues.  Finally figured out that I needed to delete every backup file from Time Machine on external drive from the date I installed Lion because some of the hidden files were still migrating back to Snow Leopard.
    I had to:
    1. Delete all time machine backup files from date/time of Lion installation forward
    2. Do "clean" installation of Snow Leopard (wiped hard drive using disk utility and booted with Snow Leopard disc)
    3. Chose option to reinstall from backup off Time Machine which eventually got me back to Snow Leopard desktop
    4. Deleted Aperture program and reinstalled (I had to install Aperture 2 and then install Aperture 3 upgrade.
    5. Reinstalled iLife apps
    5. Applied all Apple updates available (again this took a few hours because there were several updates from Snow Leopard's original release plus Aperture 3 and other application updates)
Still doing some tweaking on some of my other apps but got everything back to where I originally was.  Now plan to wait on a few version updates from Lion before reinstalling.
I am one of Apple's biggest fans, but was very disappointed in the fact that I lost functionality in one of their own pieces of software (which I use the most!)  by installing Lion.

  • Trying to import a .mov file made with gotomeeting - no problems in past yet says No importable files -None of the selected files or folders can be imported. Change the selection and try again.  re-recorded 3 times and still not accepting HELP

Trying to import a .mov file made with gotomeeting - no problems in past doing this. After 3 attempts recording the hour long video and trying to upload it to iMovie, it says No importable files -None of the selected files or folders can be imported. Change the selection and try again. What could the reason be?

After much research and troubleshooting, GoToMeeting replied with the final answer: We do not support the uploading of recordings to editing software. If you are having issues uploading a recording, unfortunately, we do not have tools or steps to resolve this. It is not a supported feature. I am sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
The no longer plan to support editing of recordings made with their software.  So, we are planning to find a new meeting provider.

  • After I import a movie file from the camera memory card, Imovie 10.0.1 acts as if the memory card is empty though I know it isn't.... I can't import that file to iMovie again.. is that the way it worksnow?  Thank you, Filippo

On IMac 10.9  After I import a movie file from the camera memory card to Imovie 10.0.1 it acts as if the memory card is empty though I know it isn't.... I can't import that file to iMovie again.. is that the way it works now?  Anyone know?  Thanks, Filippo

I would like to know this too. I imported a lot of files, then Imovie crashed. I went back in and they are not in imovie at all.
I reconnected the camcorder to import again and though they are still on the camcorder, I no longer see them in the available list of files to import. I'm sure there is some sort of simple setting somewhere that reveals all files even if it thinks they are imported.
    Thanks

  • How can I import a movie into iMovie 09 from a hard drive?  The movie will open and play in idvd but breaks into separate files that can't be downloaded when I try to import.  Can it be done?

How can I import a movie into iMovie 09 from a hard drive?  The movie will open and play in idvd but breaks into separate files that can't be downloaded when I try to import.  Can it be done? I am trying to create a disc of player highlights for a collegiate coach, and I am using movie files downloaded to my hard drive from a DVD created on a PC.

No unfortunately it won't open in quicktime either.  It does the same thing that Imovie does, separates it into two file folders audio and video, and if i select video it opens to reveal 8 files that cannot be selected.  VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.VOB,VTS_01_0.BUP, VTS_01_0.IFO, VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VB, VTS_01_3.VOB.  All of which cannot be opened or selected.
Opening it in Idvd and folllowing your suggestion works and I get a format code of NTSC.  Is that the same?  Thank you for your time and response.

  • DVD: can I extract the movie files?

DVD: can I extract the movie files?
I created a DVD (burned on DVD media). I did not archive the project since the files are too large. Can I extract the movie files from the DVD? I want to make a edit to the DVD.
I know if I have the movies (clips) in iMovie I can do it but how do I do it from a completed DVD that I created and dont have the assets?
I really don't want to pay for software that I will use once. Low or No cost alternative that won't sacrifice file quality? Thanks! Steve

As far as set up goes, others on this forum feel free to add. I rarely use either of the above (although I have access to them on separate power macs).
Reason: Apple's DVDSP works natively with Mpeg-2. I personally have no need for anything else since these features are already included in apple's pro apps.
Q: Doesnt DVDxdv watermark the demo version?
A: Yes. It does, until you pay for it in full.

    Q:what is QT playback component??
A:The QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component provides QuickTime users with the ability to import and play back MPEG-2 content, including both multiplexed (a.k.a. muxed, where the audio and video tracks are interleaved into one track) and nonmultiplexed (a.k.a. elementary) streams.

  • How can I convert a mov file to swf?

how can I convert a mov file to swf?

You don't. You convert your mov file to a mp4 h264 encoded file, and import that into Flash. Then export to swf (in a folder), and you use that swf in your page (do not forget to upload all the other assets as well).
Alternatively, convert to html 5 video files which are also supported by mobile devices.
    Learn more here: http://diveintohtml5.info/video.html
ps you can use the Adobe Media Encoder to convert your mov files to h264. Or to html5 video:
