  • All of a sudden..eMac can't find any disc drives

All of a sudden I get a no drives message when I try to open the optical drive. DVD drive not found, can't burn anything. I don't know how to fix this. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Not sure why this would be happening to your eMac, but maybe if you rest the PRAM/NVRAM
(can be done in some computers by resetting the PMU, or other keyboard commands as needed)
and sometimes the overall effects of not performing system maintenance between and during
system software updates and other times, can eventually allow the system to be unstable or
for the user to find issues while trying to do different tasks.
Have you repaired disk permissions? I'd start up in SafeBoot, then use Disk Utility's 'repair disk
permissions' then restart normally; this may help for some things, since it will try and repair some
issues in two ways in this task alone. It may not be enough; so you could try the booted OS X
version of Disk Utility in the Installer disc; in the menu bar which will drop when you click in the
header in the installer can show you options, Disk Utility, Startup Disk, etc. So, holding the
C key down on startup with the boot installer in the optical drive should allow you to access; but
do not install an OS. When Disk Utliity's 'repair disk' is run, you can quit D.U. and choose Startup
Disk to select the computer's own system to restart and run from.
{Sometimes, you may have to choose System Preferences and check to see if the CDs & DVDs
    controls are set properly for the handling of these discs; since this can be set to ignore them.}
If a hardware issue is suspect, and you have the Apple Hardware Test (could be on a system CD
or a system DVD which came with the computer) you could boot from the disk and run a test. Also,
the optical drive should be visible in the System Profiler. Sometimes it may show but not work. And
if nothing else, try and get the 'reset power management unit' sequence to work. It may help the system
see the components connected to the logicboard. And, could be the optical drive is defective.
{There is a PMU reset button on all eMacs. It can be found inside the user access door (where you
would install memory). It will either be near the battery, or at the opposite end of that compartment,
    look near the end of the memory slots. No need to open anything, except the memory access door.}
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • MBP late07: Superdrive won't let me insert any disc

    Hi,
    MBP 2.2ghz and 10.6 here.
Since some days I can't insert any standard-sized dvd/cd because *something* is inside my superdrive (GSA-xxx). I tried to eject anything inside the optical drive via Terminal.app, without luck.
As written in this post (https://discussions.apple.com/message/3944529#3944529):
when i try to insert any cd/dvd into the superdrive, it dosent go in at all. it pushes the media to the left and it seems like there is something in there that is preventing the disc to go in.
I disassembled the whole case and the Superdrive as well.
It seems that a mobile mechanic part (showed in this image, sorry for its roughness http://i.imgur.com/xzXJB.jpg) is stuck near the center of the Superdrive plate, while it should move to the right edge of the Superdrive whenever the slot is empty, in order to let you insert an optical disc. Then it should move in the place it sits now, in order to prevent the disc to fall if you put your Macbook vertically.
I tried to manually move this mechanic part and... I couldn't, it seems like it's actually glued to the Superdrive plate! It shouldn't be supposed to be there, because it prevents any disc to be inserted.
    Any hints?
    Thanks

I don't know how, but it seems that I've fixed it.
I found an old Apple troubleshooting page related to Powerbooks and Mac OS 10.3. It stated than, when Superdrive cannot accept disc, you can open iTunes and press the dedicated Eject button. Et voilà, I heard a "click" and it finally accepted a dvd disc.
I don't know why drutil tray eject via Terminal.app didn't work and iTunes did...

  • Can't insert a disc in my imac 11,3 inter core i7

was burning dvds and after successfully completing one - I suddenly was unable to burn the next - I can't insert the disc - it just gets stuck halfway and the computer won't "grab" it.   I've tried rebooting, software updates, different discs etc but nothing is working.  Thanks for the help.

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.

  • I can not save any data to external hard drive from my mac pro. Is there anyone can help me in this regard?( note, when i first plug my ext. drive to mac i chose option to backup later)

I can not save any data to external hard drive from my mac pro. Is there anyone can help me in this regard?( note, when i first plug my ext. drive to mac i chose option to backup later)

The device may be formatted for Windows, as NTFS. The format is readable, but not natively writable on a Mac. To write to the device, you must either reformat it (erasing all the contents) or install third-party software to enable write access to NTFS.

No, sorry. it won't work with the 2007 MBP. You can replace the optical drive yourself - just go shopping at OWC.

  • My iMac's DVD Rom Stuck! I can't insert any Disk.

My iMac's DVD rom is not accepting any disk.
If I try to insert a Disk, it only goes half way. Something is BLOCKING the disk from going in.
The last time I used the DVD rom was last week, it ejected the disk so hard, the DVD Disk actually fell on the floor...after that, It's been stuck until now.
    Is the DVD rom broken?
My iMac is Core 2 Duo 2.4 [2007-2008 model]
    Thanks.

Yes, your DVD drive is busted.
Contact your Local Apple Service Provider and make an appointment to have is serviced.
    http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/
It will be covered if you have Apple Care, if not call around and get some estimates.

  • Can't insert CD or DVD into the drive

I am wondering if my CD/DVD drive has gone bad.   Mine seems like something is stuck inside. I can insert a CD or DVD halfway, and then it feels like it's hitting something, but there is no CD icon in finder or in disk utility. I have tried all the typical things to eject a disk in case one is indeed stuck (like holding down the mouse button upon restart, using the drutil command in terminal, holding the eject button for 15 seconds, resetting the PRAM, etc.) Nothing has worked. Ideas? This iMac is 3.5 year old, so it's long out of warranty.

Is it saying "System X" or "OSX"? The precise working for an issue can make a difference.
Are you using a retail installer DVD (black) of Leopard or a DVD that came with another machine (gray)? Only retail installer versions will install on any computer. Machine-specific versions only work with that particular computer.
I cannot force a startup from any CD or DVD
Again, precise wording is critical. What CD are you trying to start from? No OSX operating system (except a few issued with utilities) for Intel Macs has been released on CD. This suggests to me that you are trying to install from an old version that will not boot your computer anyway, unless you didn't mean CD. What other DVDs have you tried?
In general I am trying to determine if you are even using versions that should boot your computer. If you are sure you are then you can try restarting by inserting a DVD (say, your Tiger DVD that came with your computer which should work) and holding down the option key.
Do you mean "Repair Privileges" or "repair permissions"?
You can only repair a disc from which you are not booted. You need to boot from your original DVD that came with your Mac and run Disk Utility from that in order to repair your internal hard drive.

  • Just upgraded to 10.8.3 - Can no longer use disc drive

    Well this made my weekend.
Updated to 10.8.3 and my disc drive has been rendered useless.
After I boot up, I can if I am lucky use the drive once, but more often than not the disc whirs and then spits the disc back out.
CD's with data I had written on to (and was using the morning before I upgraded) can no longer be read.
I have seen various comments re this but cant see any solution anywhere?
    Can anyone help?

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.

  • Can't burn any discs on iTunes

should i fix it myself? 1 year a/s was gone before 1 years.......
    anyway................................ help!

Sorry to hear about your issues. In terms of returning it, if possible, I would bring it to an apple store rather than send it in to Apple.
My original Macbook pro had its fans blowing fulltime/full power so I brought it to the store and they said "2 days old, go get this guy a new machine" and that new machine has been perfect.
I know not everyone lives near an apple store, but my sense is that if you can get to one (bring your receipt with you) that they will be able to handle this issue quickly for you. I know I would be pretty upset if I had to mail my new computer back to apple for who knows how long.
I also agree with what one of the previous posters said about the RAM. Sometimes that can cause issues.
Hope this helps and hope you are able to get to an apple store. If you are within the 14 days I think they will just swap it out for you. Bring the box with you as well. They asked me to go home and get my box and bring it back so that the computer's serial number would match the S/N on the box.
Best of luck and sorry to hear about your issues.
When/if it does get fixed I think you will find that this is an amazing computer, but the number of issues people are having is troubling to say the least.

  • Can't perform any functions on my new drive from Raid admin?

I had a drive go bad in my Raid, (amber light) raid admin stated that the array was degraded and the drive was unknown.
I ordered a new drive (same type of drive) inserted new drive and a red light was above disk slot and the data would not rebuild automatically. In Raid admin it stated that the drive was not installed but that the disk was online in the events log. (that seemed conflicting to me)
I placed the old disk back in just for giggles to see if I could do anything with rebuilding parity data and none of the functions in the utility will let me do anything, Raid admin only shows that I have 3 disks in my array. It will not include the 4disk as part of the array. It says alredy belongs to ma raid set but will not let it be included with raid 1
If I have another disk go bad I am sunk.
I am fairly new at messing with raid set ups. I know we are set up with a RAID 5 with 4 disks.
I am just nervous to do anything with the data I already have thinking I am gonna wipe something out.
    Any suggestions would be great.

  • I can't view any Quicktime movies from a drive that was uploaded by a Mac

I have a drive with approx 250 GBs of Quicktime movies that I need to edit. The movies were uploaded onto the drive by a Mac running Quicktime 7.1.3 Pro. This is the same version of Quicktime I am running. When I try to view the movies or import them in AVID Liquid or Express Pro, I can hear the audio, but the screen remains black. I have tried to convert the files in AVIs, MPEGs, and AVID files to no avail. Does anyone have any idea what is going on? What seems so strange to me is that I can't even view them.
BYW: I am able to access the contents of the drive because I am running Mac Drive.

Pick one of the files and open it using QuickTime Player. Open the Movie Info window (Control-i) and note the video codec used.
Not all codecs are compatible with Mac's and PC's. If it was rendered using a Mac only video codec you'll need to have the Mac export the files again using a cross platform codec.

  • I can't move any file in the hard drive of my time capsule

    Hi all !
I have my time capsule change by a new one because a problem on the main power (warranty), when i received the new one they made a backup of all of my files inside a new "data" name folder, the class i see in the finder for that new folder is "sharepoint"... but i can't move or create any file or folder diferent than the "Data" folder because finder don't let me do that... i think it a permissions problem but i don't know how to change it.
    Could anyone help me ?
    Thank u !
    Regards.

I have found the solution to my problem, I just needed to shut down and restart my iPad and now I can see the email text in the text field.

  • Can't burn any DVDs on external firewire drive

Since I installed OS 10.4.9, neither DVDSP or toast titanium will recognize a "stable connection" to my external firewire lacie recorder... the message I get from toast is:
    1. Interface Error: -50
    The connection is not stable
    2. The drive reported an error:
    SENSE KEY = Illegal request
    SENSE CODE = 0x30, 0x50
    CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM, INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT
And I've been using the same media for years, without a problem.
But if I connect this device to another laptop or desktop, it'll work fine.
It still can burn CDs, and read every format. But just can't burn DVDs.
DVDSP gives me the same problem. I can use my internal burner but it's slower than using my external drive.
    Ideas?
    Thanks.
