  • Can't install itunes, PLEASE Help

Hello! first of all thanks for clicking on this and having a look at my issue.
I have a problem with downloading itunes, it goes all through the installation gets to the end and comes up with this nonsense error message anyone know what this is about? please help, thanks!

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it, which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

First off, I'm probably one of the least tech-savvy people in this forum. This issue has been plaguing me for the past week with no end in sight. I hunted around the net trying to find a straight answer and finally I came across something that worked.
NOTE: I'm running Windows XP so I can only speak for my success in that regard.
    1) Click the Windows Start button.
    2) Select "Run". (A drop down entry box will appear.)
    3) Type "regedit" (DISCLAIMER: Proceed at your own risk. Editing the registry can be dangerous and cause even more problems to your operating system if you don't know what your doing, like me. That being said this solution still seemed fairly low risk to me, I took a chance and it worked beautifully.
    4) You will now see the "Registry Editor" window pop open with a directory of folders. In the menu along the top click: Edit\Find...
    5) In the "Find What" box enter the name of the drive that was giving you the error message. In my case it was "F:\" but it could be different on yours. (Example: "G:\" or "L:\", whatever the letter is of your "Invalid Drive" message.
    6) Click the "Find Next" button.
    7) Results will appear in the window to the right if there are any hits.
    8) Read each result carefully and decide if it seems like it should be there. If it's obviously obsolete or does not belong then select it and delete it.
    a) In my case I found about a half dozen items. Two of them were outdated folder directories that no longer existed (I had changed the path name a long time ago), while the remaining hits were all "WDSynch" items (Western Digital external hard drive application. "Passport" or some nonsense.)
NOTE: I am very suspicious of external hard drives as one of the culprits of the iTunes installation problem (Invalid Drive *:\, particularly Western Digital's "WDSynch" application. Almost every post I've read the person mentioned something about their external hard drive so I'd consider that possibility first.
I had tried using this bloated, non-user friendly "WDSynch" and "Passport" application when I first bought my WD external hard drive and discovered that I hated it. Don't get me wrong, the drive itself is great but just avoid the synch app nonsense unless you want deal with constant stress and headaches (Yes, it's a very jaded and biased view so take it or leave it).
After discarding the unfriendly-ware I wound up reformatting the drive anyway from FAT32 to NTFS and I now just use a simple drag-and-drop system for file transfers and copying. (You can leave it at FAT32 if you want, I just didn't like the partition restrictions.)
    9) Do multiple searches to make sure you find every last little bugger (F3 will find the next one) so on and so forth until all evidence of that drive letter is gone.
    10 Exit the Registry Edit.
    11) Reboot your machine.
    12) Try running the iTunes install again and it should work!
Disclaimer: This is my own experience with this problem so don't blame me if you mess up your computer. I was at my wits end and had nothing to lose so I took a chance and it paid off.
I wish all of you success. Good luck!

  • Error won't let me install iTunes - please help !

When I have tried to download the latest version of iTunes so that I can update my iPhone the software won't install correctly. I even un-installed iTunes and tried from scratch.
I get so far then get the error message "Could not write value to key \software\classics\itunes.m4r verify that you have sufficient access to that key or contact your support personnal".
I'm using Vista and had turned off the spyware software and have administration rights.
Can anyone help please, at the moment I have no iTunes !!!!
    Thanks

Could you confirm the full error message and is it identical when you try to install and uninstall?
These permission issues can be tricky.
To start you need to download the iTunes installer from:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
And save it on your PC. ( You may already have done that.)
Try running it with "Run as Administrator". (You can access this by right clicking on the installer.
You can also try running the installer from another administration account.
Failing that, find the key mentioned in the error message using Regedit. I assume it is HKEYLOCALMACHINE\Software\Classes\iTunes.m4r
Right click on it an select permission then advanced. Apart from some other permissions, you should have Administrators and SYSTEM with full control, inherited from ...software\classes and it should apply to this key and sub-keys.
    Is that what you have?

  • Can not open itunes please help!!!

Is any one getting this error message, " Quicktime failed to initialize ( Error-2096) Quicktime is required to run itunes. Please uninstall itunes, then install itunes agian)
Now mind you Quick time starts up fine, I have no issues with that, but when I click on the itunes tab that error comes up. I have done everything I know but still can not get itunes to work, I have uninstalled quicktime and itunes and reinstalled it and still nothing, I am running windows XP Media Center Edition, service pack 3. Please some one help me, thank you.

Even though the following article is about the -2096 when launching the QuickTime Player, I'd start with it for your iTunes as well:
[Error -2096 message when opening QuickTime for Windows in Compatibility Mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1875]
(If you do end up having to check the iTunes.exe compatibility mode tab too, be sure that no boxes in that tab are checked, not just the compatibility mode tab itself.)

  • Suddenly Cannot Uninstall/Install iTunes :( please help!

After a recent necessary restore, I went to the iTunes shortcut on my desktop to open the application and I receive the error message "that action is only available for products that are currently installed". So I attempted to re-download iTunes, however I am receiving the error message "older version of iTunes cannot be removed. Contact technical support group." (which I assume is this discussion board because I cannot find help anywhere else on the iTunes site.) When installing it attempts to uninstall the previous application, and the message reads "the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. iTunes.msi cannot be found."
Please advise and help, thank you!

  • Can't Install iTunes or Quicktime Error Code 2356

    Hi!
I cannot for the life of me install either Quicktime or iTunes. I haven't been able to for a long time, which was never a problem, until I got a new iPod and iTunes wouldn't let me sync the two them until I installed a newer version. I have read many posts + looked all over the internet and can't seem to solve the problem. I have run a registry cleaner. I have removed iTunes, Quicktime, and anything related. I have tried to download quicktime as a stand along program. Everytime I try to install these programs I get a message about an error code 2356. Has anyone ever had a problem like this or have any ideas how to fix this? Thanks ahead of time for your help.

Thanks for taking the time to try and help me. I have tried that. The program will actually not even download on my computer (Windows Installer Cleanup). I get this error message...
    Windows Script Host
    Script: C:\DOCUEME~1\User\LOCALS~1\Temp\IXP000.TMP\StartMsi.vbs
    Line: 1
    Char: 1
Error: ActiveX component can't create object: 'Scripting.FileSystemObject'
    Code: 800A01AD
    Source: Microsoft VBScript runtime error
I am sure the problems are connected.... or maybe not. I do not know. I have looked online about this problem and see a few different solutions, but didn't want to try anything, because I do not want to make things worse on my computer. Do you know what this means or how to fix it?

  • Can't install itunes! HELP ME

When I try to install itunes this happens, please help me!

These ones are typically caused by underlying problems on the PC that also often cause Windows Updates to fail to install. If we can fix the Windows Update trouble, we can usually get the iTunes trouble cleaned up en passant.
Go into your Windows update and try to check for new updates. If updates install, stock up on the ones you're behind on, restarting the PC if requested to do so. After the restart, try installing iTunes again. Does it go through this time for you?
If windows updates fail to install, go into your Update History and doubleclick the failures. What alphanumeric codes appear for you? Are they also 80073712, or some other number? (If they're another number, what number are you getting?)

Hi Fariha I have the exact opposite of what you are experiencing.Mine is in a stopped state and refuses to start. lol. Its in the link below.

I might be able to piggy back on your thread. First of all have you triedd stopping the service though task manager? Do that and see if there is an error message. I hope someone can suggest a registry hack that may solve this IPOD service issue.

  • Can't Install Itunes 7.0x-Error!

I can install Itunes 7.0x perfectly fine on my compaq, but on my Gateway I get this error:
    http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/5641/ierrorez7.jpg

okay, let's try working through the general troubleshooting advice from this document (that you haven't already tried at this stage):
Trouble installing iTunes or QuickTime software in Windows
... but if still no joy with that, let's get an itunes 7 installer log to the Apple engineers so they can have a look at it.
    1. Open a command prompt window. (Start menu -> Run. Type in "cmd". Hit return.)
    2. Drag and drop iTunesSetup.exe onto the window so that the full pathname of the file is at the command line prompt.
    3. Type in a space, then the following line:
    /l*v C:\log.txt
    4. Hit return.
    5. The installer will create a log file:
    C:\log.txt
Find that file and send it as an attachment to this email address.
in the email to Roy, be sure to include the following information:
    - A link to the thread on Apple Discussions where the issue is being discussed
    - The username you are using in the thread
    - The version of iTunes you are using or trying to use
    - the version of Windows you are using (mention service packs)
    - A concise description of the issue you are seeing
    - The exact text of the error message you are seeing

  • Can't install iTunes, gives two errors

Whenever I try to install iTunes, it gives me two error messages:
Error 1325.iPodService.Resources is not a valid short file name.
    and
Error: -1603 Fatal Error during Installation.
Does anyone know what's up? I used to use iTunes, but uninstalled it after some problems with my computer, now I can't install it to use my iPod.

Try installing the Quicktime standalone. Find it here:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html
Those errors are usually due to a broken Quicktime, which iTunes needs to have in order to run. TURN OFF all your security software, because programs like Norton will interfere with the successful download and install. Also, save it to your harddrive and install it from there instead of running it over the internet.
    Good Luck,
    Rachyl

  • Can't install itunes 7, HELP!!

I go to the page to download itunes 7. I click to download it, and it takes me to the page that says thank you for downloading itunes 7. but it doesn't download, no instructions pop up, no nothing. I searched my computer, it's not on there. I deleted the old version, still doesn't download. HELP!!!!!!!

OK, if you have successfully saved the iTunes installer on your PC (you shouldn't run it over the internet) then you should take a look at this Apple help on trouble installing Itunes:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976
Ask again if that doesn't help. An exact desctiption of what happens with any error messages helps.
