I can't Install Mac OS X on external drive!

hi all,
i got an external drive that i hoped to use for emergeny disk repair. When i try installing Mac OS X on it, it says that Mac OS X cant be installed on it. does anyone know why this is and how i can install Mac OS X on it?

Sure - depends on how you prep the drive. I went through the same agony, until I found the solution. Simple, actually.
Two things -
1. use a Firewire drive only. USB will not work to boot from.
2. When partitioning, use the GUID partition scheme option to prep the drive.
I've got one here I do it with all the time. When it's connected and I boot, hold down Option and it's there as another bootable drive. Takes longer, since it's not internal, but can save your butt from time to time.

  • Can I install on MainStage 2 on external drive?

    Hello,
I have a 2010 MacBook Air running Lion. I have little room left on the internal drive, but I've been able to run other apps and files from my external drive.
Is there any way I can download and install MainStage 2 to my external drive? There is not enough room on the internal drive to even do the basic 4G download of MainStage 2 and essential content.
    Thanks,

  • Can I install Windows Applications on an External Drive?

I would like to install Windows apps on an external drive. Is this possible?
Windows Vista will of course reside on the internal drive. (on a 2009 Mac Mini)

    Is this possible?
Only if the application is explicitly designated as being portable. It may work for other applications, but isn't guaranteed to succeed, as most Windows applications modify the registry when installed and/or use system components.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You may be able if your computer meets some requirements and if you don't mind putting your PC in risk, but it's not legal to install OS X on non-Mac computers. See the OS X Terms of Use > http://www.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/OSX109.pdf

  • Can I install XP in a (partitioned) external drive and run it on my Macbook

I just bought a Macbook (late '08), but for work I need to use Windows XP. I have a 500 MB external drive, too.
Could I partition my external drive, install XP there and run it on my Macbook from there?
How would the external drive be affected as far as storing content from both OS's?
    Thanks.

    Hi Sergio,
Thanks. What if I partitioned my macbook's hard drive (I see everybody is talking of boot camp, but I haven't looked it up yet), say 70% mac and 30% xp, then I could run xp no problem, right?
Yes, that should work out. XP itself needs about 10GB of HD space to run perfectly and add to that the amount of space you need for your Windows applications.
BootCamp is part of OSX Leopard, see here: http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
And could I save my content from both OS in the ext drive without distinction and be able to fish it out, or should I partition my drive too?
If 'save' = backup, then you can use WinClone http://twocanoes.com/winclone/ to make an image file of your Windows partition and for OSX backup you can use TimeMachine (part of OSX) or SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner which can make a bootable backup of your OSX partition onto your external HD.
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
If you simply want to save your files onto your external HD and have no single files that are bigger than 4GB you can make one partition on your external HD nd use the FAT32 file system (called MS-DOS in OSX Disk Utility).

  • I'm trying to install Mac OSX on an external drive with my Mac Mini

A few days ago, I picked up my new Mac Mini. I'm using the install disk included with the Mini in an attempt to install Mac OSX 10.4.5 onto my external hard drive - a LaCie d2 200GB.
The installer knows the LaCie is there - but it won't let me install it there. I had no problem doing this with my last Mac (Power Mac G4). Does anyone have any suggestions?
Mac Mini Duo Core 1.66Mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   LaCie d2 Firewire Hard Drive 200GB

If you are using an Intel mac mini you need to change the partition scheme. Without doing this the Intel Macs cannot boot from the drive.
To do this you need to open Disk Utility, select your drive (not the partition), then select the Partition tab. In there you'll see an Options… button. Click on it and change the partition scheme to GUID Partition Table. Click OK and then apply the reparitioning.
Please be aware that by making this change you will be able to boot your Intel Mac from the drive although a PowerPC drive will no longer be able to use the drive as a boot drive.

  • Can i install os lion on an external drive

Is it possible to install OS Lion on an external Hard Drive and use that to boot up a laptop computer?

    RN,
    Thanks for the link.
Regarding "homework", I am not sure what qualifies in your world but I had done a fair bit of searching for instruction upfront, installed the program, and again searched the apple database (presumably not the right keywords) when it didn't work.
Really appreciate you taking time to help.

  • Installing mac os x from external drive

I would like to upgrade and older macbook, which is running Mac OS Tiger, to Mac OS X Snow Leopard. My problem is that the DVD drive of the laptop is broken. I shared the DVD drive on my new macbook but for installation to start the old macbook needs to restart. When restarted the installation doesn't begin because the laptop needs to be restart from the installation DVD. Also made an installation (.cdr) copy of the installation DVD and placed it on the old laptop.
Restarting the laptop causes the same issue as the external DVD drive.
Is there a way to bypass the restarting for installation to start or is there any other way to upgrade my older Macbook?
    Danny

You can't use Remote Disc to install an OS; you need to use an external optical drive, or target disk mode, or if you have a computer running Mac OS X Server, NetInstall.

  • How can i install Mac OS on toshiba intel celeron satellite  L450-9P

can i install Mac OS on in Windows 7? for dual-boot purpose

But you can install Windows on a Mac via Bootcamp for dual boot.
For the purposes of Windows®, a Mac is just a generic piece of PC hardware, so installing on to it is permitted by Microsoft's EULA.  On the other hand, Apple have explicitly stated in the EULA for OS X "Mountain Lion" that it should only be installed and run on Apple-branded hardware.  Section 2, Paragraph B, Sub-section 1:
you are granted a limited, non-transferable, non-exclusive license […] to download, install, use and run for personal, non-commercial use, one (1) copy of the Apple Software directly on each Apple-branded computer…
    (emphasis mine)
    Section 2, Paragraph H:
The grants set forth in this License do not permit you to, and you agree not to, install, use or run the Apple Software on any non-Apple-branded computer, or to enable others to do so.
Also, discussion of how to run OS X on non-Apple branded hardware is against these forums' Use Agreement, Section 2 Paragraph 8, including Sub-section 1:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.

  • Can i install mac osx 10.5.4 on my ibookg4

I'm trying to install a retail version of Leopard that i purchased
and i get a Kernel Panic Screen every time the install is reaching about 45%, and sometimes i even get it during the DVD Check before the installation starts.
the only time i finally witnessed the process reach more than 90% i got an error log and that the installation was not successful.
knowing that prior to this the ibook had Tiger installed and running smooth which is bad since i selected erase and install option and i don't have the installation discs that came with the machine.
    and my questions are:
1- can i install it from a portable dvd drive?
2- can i install it through my home network knowing that i don't have Mac Server?
3- it's really not worth it to try fixing this old machine since i know i will be paying a minimum of 500$ is there any hope for this to work somehow or should i abandon hope and look for a new machine?
here is my iBook G4's Configs:
    Processor Name: PowerPc G4 (3.3)
    Processor Speed: 1 GHz
    # of CPUs: 1
    Memory: 1.12 GB
    Bus Speed: 133 MHz
    Boot ROM Ver: 4.7.7f0
    Hard drive space: 55.9 GB
Graphics Info: ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 with 32 MB VRAM Total
both "Hardware" and "Power On" test passed and i did verify both hard drive and it's permissions and they both passed.
looking forward to read a solution
    thank you in advance

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
can i install it from a portable dvd drive?
By a portable DVD drive do you mean an external firewire DVD drive, or something else?
Why would you consider either an external drive or a network? Does that mean that the internal optical drive does not work?
the ibook had Tiger installed and running smooth which is bad since i selected erase and install option and i don't have the installation discs that came with the machine.
You really need to have possession of install disks for the OS you are running.
In terms of the kernel panics, it is difficult to know exactly where the issue lies without being able to boot the computer. little shoulders has suggested checking the RAM, and that would be a place to start. You might also want to remove the Airport Extreme card, as that is often a cause of KPs. Finally, I would try the install disk in another computer to be sure that the disk itself is not in some way implicated. Please make sure that the installer you are using is indeed a Full Retail Version, as computer specific installers not specific to you computer can be troublesome.

  • I have two hard drives on my mac 10.5.8 power pc and hear the clickking sounds of the first hard drive and think that it may be dying, can I install everything on the other hard drive also and wait for the first drvie to die before i use the other drives

I have two hard drives on my mac 10.5.8 power pc and hear the clickking sounds of the first hard drive and think that it may be dying, can I install everything on the other hard drive also and wait for the first drive to die before i use the other drives? Or, what is the best way to handle this?

I do not know what you are waiting for.
I'd make a backup of your important stuff before cloning the entire disk.
Carbon Copy Cloner will copy your startup drive to an external  firewire drive.  You can boot from the external drive to verify that you have a good clone. When you upgrade your existing startup drive, you can at any time boot from your external drive and go back to your existing system.

SuperDuper is the wildly acclaimed program that makes recovery painless, because it makes creating a fully bootable backup painless. Its incredibly clear, friendly interface is understandable, easy to use, and SuperDuper's built-in scheduler makes it trivial to back up automatically. And it runs beautifully on both Intel and Power PC Macs!

A PowerBook G4 can't run Snow Leopard OS 10.6, however, it can run Leopard OS 10.5. But you must use a retail (black) Leopard install DVD.
What does the selling of your MacBook have to do with installing Leopard on your PowerBook?
