I can't install OS 9 & OS 10 on my iMac

I have tried everything, I can't install OS 9 & OS 10 on my iMac G4/800 flat panel. I have all sorts of installation discs, I have OS X installed, but I can not get any of 4 different OS 9 discs to boot up, help!

If you already have 256 MBs installed inside, then the 1 GB module is installed in the base slot. If you want to upgrade to 2 GBs, then you must first remove the 256 MB module and replace it with another 1 GB module. Maximum RAM supported is 2 GBs.
If the kernel panic occurs when booting from an installer disc before the installer loads, then there's a hardware failure. Could be bad RAM but could also be a motherboard problem. It's possible it's a hard drive but that isn't as likely if the panic is nearly immediately after the computer starts.
If you have the Apple Hardware Test CD that came with the computer you can run the hardware tests to see if anything pops up. If it does you will have an error code reported. Note what that is so you can tell the service tech about it.

  • Hi, can I install windows XP with bootcamp on my iMac which is now on Maverick? Please help.

Hello all, can I install windows XP with bootcamp on my iMac which is now on Maverick? Please advise. Thank you.

Install 7. Don't bother with applying drivers and such, just reboot again from DVD and install again, it will see the existing system and this time activation will be possible.
Vista is mess, takes longer etc. Hope you have SP1 version of 7. And for Vista, only SP2+ are even supported now, by MS.

  • Can't install Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 onto my iMac from CD

I can't install Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 onto my iMac I just purchased. The software is brand new, the CD appears to read fine. The instillation "on-screen" instructions are not popping up. I have had the software a minute, purchased it new but was waiting till I could afford an iMac. Any suggestions?

How are you using a CD with a new imac? They haven't had disc drives in years.
Try downloading from here and use the serial number from your boxed version:
    Download Photoshop Elements products | 9, 8, 7
However, there are a couple of other things to try. First of all, PSE 9 has both mac and windows discs. If the disc doesn't mount on the desktop, then you've got the wrong one. Go get the other one and when it appears on the desktop, double click it.  Then double click Adobe Photoshop Elements 9, double click Install/Setup (can't remember which it was for PSE 9, sorry). There is no automatic install for PSE for mac, since macs have no autoplay function for security reasons, and there isn't any window with instructions, either. You just keep double clicking till it installs.

  • Can I install Tiger in my NEW 21.5" iMac ?

Can I install Tiger on my NEW 21.5" iMac ?
Machine bought new - Nov. '09.
While I do like some of the features in Snow Leopard... almost all my existing software plus the Sims 2
games will apparently NOT run (or run well).

Rosetta does exactly that. It was created to run MacOS X programs that only ran on PPC macs to run on intel processors. Rosetta would translate PPC machine instructions into intel instrucions on-the fly.
Classic Mode was a whole separate operating system. Rosetta merely translates PPC to intel so it is generally invisible to the user.
I have used Quicken '05, iMovie HD, AppleWorks and Microsoft Office under Rosetta with no issues. Photoshop 7 was the only program I have that choked and would not run. I would guess that the Sims program would be most likely to not run. They might have an intel update available, I know that Zoo tycoon 2 had a patch to allow for intel processers, The Sims might, too.
Some programs have "fat binaries" with both versions. If you are curious, you can see whether you are running intel or PPC-translated by using the activity monitor.
You don't need to run Rosetta separately, if it is needed it turns itself on, so the programs install normally. In fact, some programs needed Rosetta just to run the installer, the actual software ran on the intels.
I think I have the same machine as you, I just bought my new 21.5" iMac last month. I love it by they way, a DVD that would have taken all night to burn was done in a little over an hour!

I can't install latest version of flashplayer on my imac.  It keeps asking me to shut Safari.  I do but then each time it still asks me to shut Safari

you may be lucky, but you should expect problems if you do that.
you should properly install your adobe software using the adobe installation files.

  • Help, can't install OS 10.2 on my 2003 Imac G4

    Hello Lads,
I picked up a 2003 IMac flat panel at a college auctio, and it's hard drive is wiped. I tried to install 10.2 retail disc, and the mac does not recognize the disc. I know the computer is OK, as my 10.5 disk is recognizes on the boot up, can't install of course, but it goes to the install page. The 10.2 does nothing, no disc icon on any of the boot up options?
The tech at Mac said 10.2 would be fine, but isn't any suggestions? do I actually need 10.3?
    Thanks to anyone who answers.
    Donald Bowman

The original OS X version that came with the earliest 2003 iMac was 10.2.3. The last 2003 model required 10.2.7. So depending on which exact 2003 model you have you would need either the original discs that came with the computer or a retail copy of Jaguar at least one sub-version greater than the one originally installed - 10.2.4 or 10.2.8 - or you need any version of Panther or Leopard. Of course the machine's RAM configuration must meet the minimum requirements of 256 or 512 MBs, respectively, and to use Leopard the computer must have an 867 MHz or faster CPU.

  • Can't install OS 10.4.6 on my imac 5.1 with the install dvd.

I borrowed the install disk from a friend and tried to format the HD and start up from the new OS but it doesn't work. Is the disk specific to my friend's computer or is my computer too old to support the new OS? How can I format and start up my computer without having to use my older OS version install dvds?

I just wanted to start it from Leopard again instead of my Tiger disks, but I no longer have the retail Leopard dvd.
Well, what was really confusing about your post was its title (Can't install OS 10.4.6...) where you implied you wanted to (re)install a version of Tiger!
I was going to question you why you wanted to do that but I figured you knew what you wanted.  If you don't have your original installer disks then you need to acquire the retail installer.

  • Can not install OEM Windows 7 64 bit on iMac 24"

I have a late 2006 iMac 24" white. I have installed Lion with Boot camp 4.0. I am attempting to install Windows 7 64 bit OEM. At Step 3 "Install Windows" of the Installation and Setup Guide the system does not start the Windows 7 installer. Please Help!

I found another thread about running Windows 7 64 Bit on systems other than in a list provided by Apple. I ran the suggested Terminal Command with the following result:
    george-halls-imac:~ georgehall$ ioreg -l -p IODeviceTree | grep firmware-abi
        | |   "firmware-abi" = <"EFI32">
Does this mean that I can not run 64 Bit Windows 7 on my system? Do I need to upgrade the firmware? Can I change this parameter and get the system to boot the Windows 7 install disk?
My System is an iMac 24" white (late 2006), 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4 GB mem. NVIVIA GeForce 7600 GT
    Boot ROM version IM61.0093.B07
    SMC Version (system) 1.10f2

  • Can I install a 2gb Sata3 HDD in my IMac G5 20" ALS?

I currently have a WD 2gb Sata2 HDD drive in my machine which is probably going to crash soon due to a node error I get when running disc verify in disk utility. The machine was running very slow recently which prompted the verify disc. I have 2gb of RAM running also.
The local shops only seem to sell Sata3. Can I install this drive or do I have to source a Sata2?
    Many thanks
    Mdn

Node issues can be fixed with booting from the 10.5 retail installer and running Disk Utility from the installer's Utilities menu to Repair Disk.  If that can't repair it, backup your data, and purchase Alsoft Disk Warrior.   If that can't repair it, yes replace the hard drive.   Faster SATA hard drives can be put in, if they either have a jumper than slows to 1.5 Gbps, or are designed to automatically downstep to that speed.  Check with the manufacturer if that's a possibility for the model you are looking for.

Yes. Recommended in pairs. So 2x2GB + 2x4GB SO DIMMS for a total of 12 would be fine.

  • Can i install 800MHz memory on my mid 2007 imac?

I'd like to upgrade the memory on my imac: 24 inc mid 2007 (iMac7,1).
It currenlty have a 1GB stick and a 2GB stick.  Both 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM.  Can I install 2x2GB DDR2 of 800MHz?  and if so, would that be an performance improvement?
    Specs:
    24in iMac7,1
    Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz
    Bus Peed 800 MHz
Memory: 3GB (as above both 667MHz)
    Thanks

You are welcome. That is the same machine as mine (20" version). Although Apple rates it as accepting 4gB, outside vendors have tested it with 6gB. This happens quite often with quoted RAM quantities.
Maximum Memory     6.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots     2 - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM

  • Can we install system 10.3 on my old iMac?

Hi, we have an older iMac G3 that has only system 9.2.2 on it. It's really struggling since the software is not internet compatible anymore. Can we install my system 10.3 on it? These are problems I forsee:
    1. My install disk would install both systems 10.3 AND system 9.2.2 onto the iMac. There is no way I can install only one system from what I've been able to tell.
    2. The disk space for the iMac is only 9.5 gigs.
Is that enough space for system 10.3 PLUS 9.2.2 or is there a way to install only system 10.3 onto that computer?
    Thank you!

    IMac G3   Mac OS 9.2.x

    Hi Martha,
Unfortunately you do not give us any information
about your system. Please fill in your computer
details in "My Settings" in the right sidebar of this
page. We need to now as much as possible about your
system (Exact Mac type, processor type, MHz, RAM,
current system version, etc.) in order to help!
Ok, ok, well I have two computers so it's kind of confusing. My old iMac is a G3 400, I have 576 megs of ran, my processor is a PowerPC G3, and the hard drive is 9.5 gigs.
Whether your iMac is compatible with Panther depends
on the data I asked above.
Next you have to use the retail full install disks.
You CANNOT use grays hardware specific install disks
that shipped with another computer! The retail disks
do NOT contain OS 9, therefore the disks you own are
    obviously hardware specific install&restore disks
that cannot be used (besides that it would also be
    illegal).
Right, I know that and I already found out that if we want to do this, we can get Panther from the college bookstore for $49.00. I do understand that this disk ONLY has system 10.3 on it and not system 9.2.2.
Presuming your iMac is compatible with Panther (see
above) and you use the retail install CDs you can
simply install Panther alongside OS 9 without any
problems. Just make sure you install the firmware
    upgrade first: Firmware Upgrades.
Great and thanks for that information!!
